DIY Sliding Van Sofa Bed: More Space, Comfort + Storage
Вставка
- Опубліковано 1 жов 2024
- We build a sliding double van sofa bed that functions as a sofa by day and a bed by night; it's very easy to convert, is comfy and has loads of accessible storage.
The design allows for two large under bed drawers, as well as an additional hinged door that covers our utility area. This could quite easily be another drawer if you've nothing underneath the bed. Likewise you could easily adapt this design to be a full length bed straight off the bat. We really like how it has turned out; especially as we made it from wood left over from other projects on our bus conversion.
This bed is great for all vans as the design can be tweaked to work to different sizes; we needed this because we wanted the sofa to be shorter than a double bed but still have the ability to extend to become have a longer sleeping area.
We adapted the design from several others we had seen on UA-cam and on forums. The key differences is we added more dividers, supports and locking drawer runners to keep the bed in position when in sofa mode or bed mode - it is solid.
Another consideration we had was the futon cushion itself, we didn't want to buy a custom set of cushions so opted for a futon mattress that had enough flex in it to make allow it to bend, whilst still being comfortable enough to sit and sleep on.

We'd love to know if you've built something similar, or any questions, suggestions or general comments would be amazing to hear. Thanks so much for watching, we really appreciate it.

Our Mercedes Vario now has enough space for 5 people (technically), or is at least flexible enough for us to adapt how we use the van. We are really pleased with how it came out, and this might just be our most favourite addition to our van build so far.

Thanks again.
Ongelofelijk, hier is weer over nagedacht
bedankt jongens, veel denken in deze.
Loving that fabric hinge 😎
Great solution 👍
Can't beat a turtles cover 😁 after all they are heroes in a half shell 😎
Lol. They totally are. Thanks - we were half tempted to try the piano hinge there, but it wouldn’t have worked. B&Q (or a ratchet strap) to the rescue 🚐🚐🚐
Genius
Thank you 😊
Ahhh wow thats so cool. What a great use of space too :) Fantastic skills as always .
Thanks guys. Very kind of you to say. Hope you’re doing well 🚐🚐🚐
... Again fixing the piano hinges the wrong way ... should be screwed to the slim face of the plywood so that only the small hinge portion is to be seen ... (find this nearly at every DIY build done wrong)
Thanks Tom. It would have been impossible to do this as the leafed section had to go on last. We are please with it either way, and it means we can remove them easily in the future should the need arise. Cheers for your feedback 🚐🚐🚐
Brilliant, love it! One question, did you just leave a hole in the face plate for your fingers to get to the locking drawer runners? I am mulling over a similar conundrum of what to do with mine at the moment 😁
Thank you. Yes we drilled out two 22mm holes and then joined them so we could access the locking tabs. We didn’t want to cut the face plate short and have found it easy to access this way (it’s definitely easier with two people but doable on your own). We’ve been using it a week now and so far so good but will keep you posted 🚐🚐🚐
@@WanderbusAdventures Yeah I had similar thoughts, don’t really want the locking tabs to be on display as they are a bit ugly, so was either thinking of doing a magnetic flip down front plate or holes as you have done 😁 glad it is working out. Love your project!
Ours is actually hinged too, and it does have a magnet on the back. We didn't show that very well, but it means better access and no need for little l brackets or another 'permanent' way of fixing the face plate. Thanks for your kind words, you are lovely :-)
Great ideas and great skills to match. You’re both a pleasure to watch (and a Greg Virgoe in the making, I reckon!).
Thank you for your kind words, we really appreciate it.
Glad it worked on trip
Thanks Dave. We did it 😀. Thanks for your help.
Morning Guys. Had to watch that one twice - there’s a lot to follow. My head hurt watching it, so I can only imagine how much thought went into it. Looking really good
Lol. We had to think each step out twice too 😂
Fantastic job did I miss last weeks episode and I hope you're all doing well
Thanks Mr. H. We are doing well. Kelly has a bit of a cold but on the mend. Hope you’re well 🚐🚐🚐
I have to admit that when I started watching your videos I thought you were a couple of fruitcakes naively buying a tatty old bus with the delusion you were going to be able to live in it and thought it would be interesting to watch why this is not a good idea!
But having watched the whole series I have been surprised to see that you are a couple of fruitcakes who are really resourceful and determined and have no idea about the meaning of giving up!
I am very impressed with the quality of your work and the way you have adapted to the steep learning curve of becoming a camper builder and hope you continue to post videos after this bus is complete :)
Hehe. Thanks so much polecat. You don’t have to be a fruitcake to build a van like this but it definitely helps 😂
Yes mate!! Genius! I love it!! There’s so many things in this that require so much thought and detail to make it work. Well done all! 😍😎👍🏻 Loving the puns too 😂😂
Lol thanks mate. We are pleased with how it’s gone. Was one of those where you weren’t sure if it would work until the bitter end.
Another excellent example of your joinery skills. Looks great 👍
Thanks Peter. Hope you’re enjoying the weekends show 🚐🚐
How do you attach the extension bit and where do you store it and the vision bit that fits on top. If love a side it system but it looks so complex to build
Slide Out Van Sofa Bed
Amazing work, this bus just gets better every week. Your detail to everything is just brilliant. Definitely a self build to be proud of.
Thanks David. This bit might just be our favourite thing so far on the build 🚐🚐🚐
Well thought out and a good use of existing off cuts makes it economical to build. 😎👍✅✅✅✅
Thank you Andrew. We were chuffed to use up what we had 🚐🚐🚐
looks great and comfy. do you have to clime over the bed to get to front of the bus.
Thanks Dean. You could just about squeeze down the side, but probably wouldn’t want to attempt it unless you were flat Stanley 😂
Your getting good at this..extra bed, seat and storage, looks great looks functional. Now be warned that you may at some point in the distant future find this your dog house..we all get one, eventually. 😂😂
Lol. Why do you think we need it Simon 😉.
@@WanderbusAdventures 😂
Fantastic ideas and great execution well done guy's.
Thank you 😊
This is great thank you just designing my sofa bed ❤
Ah brilliant. We can report it works really well.
Love the bed/ sofa. Great progress as always.
Thank you Martin. Appreciate your kind words. Take care 🚐🚐🚐
Brilliant rich just like a rock and roll bed but sideways on love it all the best donny
Thanks Donny. Yes it is! Hope you’re doing well 🚐🚐🚐
@@WanderbusAdventures brilliant thanks van nearly finished off on first trip week wed
Excellent stuff
Another great build guys
Struggled to hear you this week but only on the talk over
Keep up the good work
Oh no. We tinkered with the sound this time to try and improve it too 😂.
@@WanderbusAdventures no problem still enjoyed it
Thank you 😊
Thank you finally someone else who's main part isn't the length needed and add an additional piece like how I am doing. Except my ends I've got 4 smaller extensions that are going to fold up and down like arm rest to the bench when put up.
Ah no worries. That’s a great idea! Bet that works well.
Looks great..Well done x
Thank you 😊
Brilliant use of the space. Great build and video guys
Thanks so much Kev. Hope you’re doing well
@@WanderbusAdventures doing great….in the middle of insulting the floor of the van
Excellent stuff. Cracking on
Oh mate that's fantastic
Thanks Neil. Appreciate it 🚐🚐🚐
