Great idea, I really like the concept! It would be awesome if there was a version available for the EU market as well - I think it could expand opportunities and attract more users. Do you have any plans for a European expansion?
this is actually a smart idea, in guitars/instruments we have reverb that people sell gear....the only problem is that you have to walk that fine line of being able to find the gear vs dealing with the "i know what i have" crowd so youll never really get a good deal on those sites unless theres something wrong and they point it out
Thank you! Great concept, especially for a fixed income hobbyist, but I imagine collectors and professionals will find great use of the platform. Same for the folks looking to scale down their shop and sell tools they use infrequently, but may be a gem for a buyer.
The biggest issue buying hand tools online especially hand planes is that their size and mass make them prohibitively expensive to ship. Both of my vintage planes (Stanley 4 and 5 which I love by the way thank you Rex) cost more to ship than the plane itself. Being Canadian you tack on duty to that and they are approaching the cost of a new Veritas plane that comes brand new with a warranty etc. i would love to go to a swap meet at a show but talking the wife into using our vacation time to go to a Woodworking event is a tough sell.
Tools of the trade show in pickering twice a year if your in Ontario. Its on the weekend so no time off. Its just tools. Ya shipping can be a pain but I found even with duty and shipping a new veritas is still way more unless your getting something real big or real special
Couple ways to help that. 1) break down the plane to fit in a more compact box and actually helps decrease chance of breaking. 2) flat rate when buying more than 1 plane works great. Theres a 2nd size of medium box most dont know about and often i have to order from usps website when i need it. 3) use a shipping site, i often save from 30 to sometimes 70% off the standard cost of shipping when i use pirate ship. There are quite a few reputable sites out there these days so if u ship regularly, def find one u like. 4) canada will always get u 😂 sorry no help about that one.
I, also being Canadian, found the only opportunities to buy vintage tools at reasonable prices are buying them local. If no good ones available locally, I would rather buy a new Veritas without hesitation. I think they are truly innovating in hand woodworking tools and should be rewarded for doing that.
This is a relay good idea. What I miss, as a non-American, is the information to which countries the seller is willing to ship the goods. And perhaps the item location (country and state). That would make your site interesting for other countries.
The bad news is that international shipping for Americans is annoying. I personally wouldn't be interested in doing international shipping, is just not worth the hassle.
Thank you, thank you. As someone who has purchased planes, auger bits, old braces, etc ... on eBay based on your videos, I found it a long and painstaking process to identify decent examples of each that were useable without massive restoration. Especially as the market exploded during the pandemic and people started trying to make big bucks with any old stuff they found in Grandpa's garage. I hope this becomes a resounding success.
Thank you Rex! I have very few sources in my region (west Texas) for good restorable tools and have wasted countless hours on eBay and with a few resellers I trust. This is a welcome addition to find those odd tools I need.
I have bought lots of hand tools via eBay and it is very true what you said … the photos and descriptions of tools shows that they that don’t care / don’t know about the function, use, design, etc of tool itself at all.
I asked right at the end of the live about how you were going to get enough people into this to get it started? Apparently I need more caffeine because I somehow forgot that you had a reach of 430k people. I hope that in the next week you have 20 times the tools posted by people jumping in.
Great job! I am going to look here first when I need tools. Thank you for improving the community. I bet it took a lot of hard work and a small amount of frustration.
This is awesome Rex, I can tell you're passionate about it and I've definitely been fed up with eBay, I had a dispute resolution go sour and I swore off them a couple years ago.
Sounds like a great idea! Best wishes for its future. I'm not a woodworker, I just like Rex's knowledgeable videos. eBay has turned into a place for ppl who drop ship large volumes of inexpensive whatevers. I only use it now when I need a national market's reach. And then I curse eBay b/c their fees are based on my shipping costs.
I'm thankful for every mistaken purchase I've made. Fact is, although what you _want_ is the correct tool in good order, doing something wrong at first and getting it right later gives you much better insight than getting lucky on your first shot.
Thanks Rex. What a great service to the community. I bought a tool, but didn't see the place to enter the startnow code (could be user error on my part). I am still satisfied with the purchase without the code.
Still prefer tool sales at my local tool preservation society, but sounds like a great idea. Shipping to Australia and NZ will mean little uptake from Aussies and Kiwis.
Rex, I have not been here in fourteen months. Sorry but life happens.Want to tell that your thumbnails are stellar and it seems you have upgraded them all. Have you hired someone to do all your editing now?
great idea ... please provide competitive shipping for international customers. oh, and get your software people to improve the accessibility of the platform for screen reader users (don't use an overlay) as there are plenty of blind woodworkers out there who might benefit from this site. otherwise, well done and good luck!
Since I´m from Europe, buying tools there will never be a deal, since shipping from the USA is criminally expensive-($24.- for shipping a $7,50 CD......) How about setting up something like `Trade-Zones` (Europe, Canada, Asia, S America, Australia, and... what´sitsnameagain?....Oh right; USA ;-p) so peeps can search within their own zones and keep the shipping-costs in check? Methinks there´s plenty of trade in these `Zones` as well.
This arrived at the perfect time!!! I just finished building my first project workbench and need some quality hand tools to make use of it. Just bought a 22” plane and a rip saw 🤠
10% vig (plus fees!) is a little steep for sellers, but the niche market and specialized context is nice; will definitely check it out next time I need something.
you are overlooking one salient fact; Those people who don't know anything about tool. and thus have no business buying or selling tools on those platforms, is the reason we have the occasional good deal on a vintage tool. As a woodworker, you always want to buy from a non-woodworker, as another woodworker knows what they have and will always sell at a premium.
Not necessarily. Often guys at swap meets see a Stanley and say "this isn't any old handplane, it's a STANLEY! So they try to sell it a Type 20 number 4 for $100. I'd much rather buy a Type 10 with surface rust than a near perfect Type 20. I know my type 20 isn't as good as my type 10, and I would price them accordingly... if I ever sold them.
That's a good point. A few months ago, I bought a Sargent No 422 Type 2 jointer for $36 + shipping on eBay. I t was listed as "unbranded", because the stamp on the iron was obscured by a little surface rust, and the only other identifying mark was 422 cast into the bed. I bought a Keen Kutter KK6 for $15 at an antique mall. It was on a booth that sells tools, but very few woodworking tools. The iron was upside down, so he couldn't see the Keen Kutter logo, and he apparently didn't know what KK6 means. It said, "unbranded plane $15" on the price tag. Those guys are my favorite sellers.
What you describe is called, "a fish out of water" deal. See, you just learned something. Yes fish out of water deals can be sweet indeed. When you ask how much and they answer in the form of a question that's usually a good sign.
This is bs. 99% of consumers want to buy something that works well from someone who knows what they are selling. If you want an adventure just buy from the bargain bin at an estate sale. But I just want to buy a good hand plane and I literally can’t
@@astronemir I'm in the 1% that wants planes that don't work. I have plenty of planes that do work. So I get a cheap thrill repairing basket cases now. I've certainly managed to find some I can't get to work. But the percentage I can't get to work is pretty low. Most hand planes just need a clean up and an iron sharpening to get running. The basic concept of hand planes is too good to not work. 90% of the time it works 100% of the time. Then as you deal with beat planes you learn the problem spots. What makes one plane better than others or worse. So it's an education. Even in failure you're bound to learn something. I'd say the biggest thing is just knowing how to sharpen the iron right. Just sharp isn't enough. I used to think it was once. Then I learned differently.
Good luck dude, I'll see how you go. I'm not a hard over wood worker, more machininig, but I dabble. eBay screwed up their search focus long ago. I can put in a very accurate description, model number, etc, etc. And the results will be all over the place. eBay just can't let a search return a few relevant results. What I find especially aggravating is the relevant items will be way down in the 50-150 results!
I see all items for sale are in the U.S. but I have joined in the hope that it will catch on in Europe. I'm retired and in the U.K. so maybe I should start refurbishing hand tools. (I did a craft engineering apprenticeship when I started work)
great concept. bookmarked the site - will have a look when time permits, but in the meantime, very best of luck with this. It really sounds like an amazing venture.
Thanks Rex. I have bought more vintage tools than I need. For example, I don’t need 5 full sets of chisels. This sounds like the perfect place for me to sell them.
One thing you didn't cover was geography. Does that mean Continental US only? There are already plenty of platforms out there at scale with prices we'll never get close to in Australia. Having a browse it looks like there isn't really any region filter or thinking. The site sounds like a great idea, but I have a feeling browsing there may be too depressing as an outsider.
hey, as a service designer and a hobby woodworker based in Hong Kong: vintage European style tools are expensive, difficult to source and in demand in China. perhaps it's the same in other parts of Asia or even other parts of the world. I think there's a big opportunity in making international purchases as frictionless as possible. already signed up and hope to make my first purchase soon!
How on earth does having knowledge or not, mean someone should not sell an old tool they have? It is when people who are into something market it, that the price sky rockets. When a rusty old plane is "just" a rusty old plane and of no value to the seller, then they put a price on it that anyone can afford. At that point it is a tool available to everyone, and potential buyers can choose to buy or not, to restore it or not and to use it or not. But the second that rusty plane lands on a site, where only the knowledgeable are allowed, where only plane geeks will be, the price will be collector priced. Hardly an advantage to most.
I love this idea! Joined immediately after watching the video!! I hope more options end up being available for the platform - like adding tool descriptions and explanations, I would really come for that part - and contribute what I know :)
eBay used to be amazing, fair fees and the whole site was geared towards the 2nd hand market. Sadly it is now for selling new, mostly cheap junk. I've tried to sell used items in the last few years, but the fees are just ridiculous.
biggest issue with eBay, is that sellers think everything is worth $1,000,000 and overprice everything. Hopefully this will work, and there will be lots of tools to sell
Dude, this is going to make you a very wealthy man. The best products solve problems and from what I’m seeing, this solves a big one in a pretty brilliant way.
Just checked out the site. Although small, nice start in the selection of tools, and SIMPLE to navigate. Definately a place to return to for used tools. How about getting a few of your woodworking compadres to donate logo stamped hand saws for auction? Do a guest appearance in their shop, collect the saw, and do a build together while promoting your site. Yeah, simple for me to say.
This is a great thing, Rex! I have been restoring axes (and other tools) for quite some time but don’t have FB and haven’t really wanted to sell on EBay. Think you should make an app for this new marketplace for sure!
One of the great things about the USA is its large population and unified domestic market, which make it easier to scale e-commerce. In Europe, it's much more challenging due to the many languages across countries.
Ebay has ruined many areas of collecting. I have been on there since 1998 buying and selling. someone sees an item go for a lot of money and they think theirs is worth that much. First, they never actually check the realized price in the completed auctions. Secondly, they fail to truly understand the differences in condition and such. I also deal with Ebay UK and Ebay Germany and you can usually find better deals on some items there including shipping. Avoid Italy and Spain as there are many scams there. I was caught up in a bad deal in Germany and the Polizei got involved. I got my money back and several months later, the Polizei sent me the item anyway.
Very cool. I hope this works out, and you are able to get a good volume of sellers, while weeding out the garage sale pickers who have no idea what is going on. Best of luck! I do kind of want a router plane, so maybe this is the time to start researching/shopping!
Buy a router plane kit and make one. It's not rocket science. I made my own blade out of an Allen key. I wouldn't recommend that route. But making the plane body was pretty easy. If I had to do it all over again I'd buy the blade. Using tools you made yourself is a thrill too.
Ebay is the only place I can but the knife I been carrying since just before going into Iraq in '09 cause they quit producing that model of sog....!o snap just got to you unveiling your platform, GOOD SHOW OLD BOY!
Great idea, I really like the concept! It would be awesome if there was a version available for the EU market as well - I think it could expand opportunities and attract more users. Do you have any plans for a European expansion?
Excellent idea! Unfortunately I live in South Africa - shipping costs from what to me is the other side of the planet (literally) is likely to be prohibitive . . .
This sounds good, Rex - except that I am in England. So unless it is something really special I will want to buy tools from elsewhere in the United Kingdom. I did buy a book on woodworking from an American once - buy I bought it from Amazon UK and it took about seven months to arrive. I buy a tool, I want to try using it, or at least start restoring it within a few days and I do not want the hassle of import duties. The book was by somebody called Krueger - I wonder what happened to him!
I thnk the idea is great but mainly for those living in the US and possibly Canada because postage outside the countgrz is a killer and, of course import tax. I bought all my older tools on Ebay and they all came from the UK. Then the UK dropped out of the EU so the Ebay thing became significantly more expensive. I could go on but you all get the idea.
Wrapping and taping thick cardboard around the blade is one option. Or do something comparable with thin plywood/hardboard. You could add a length of scrap wood to reinforce it further. It doesn't need to look pretty.
Another obstacle to finding and buying good woodworking tools are 'tool collectors' that don't use vintage woodworking tools. They buy, sell at inflated prices, and hoard massive piles of every tool imaginable, not for their own use, but for flipping at gouge prices. I rarely, if ever buy a premium new tool from a celebrity marketer like Lee Valley or Woodpecker. I also never buy from Harbor Freight or other Asian importer. On rare occasion, I encounter a vintage American made tool like Stanley or Pexto. I use them as they were intended.
I asked once before for you to show how a complete novice can use a plane to square a surface of a piece of wood. You have posted videos of squaring pieces of wood but those of us who are newbies, can spend hours trying to square a face with a plane. If I cannot hold a plane square to a surface, how can I square a surface?
great, I just wish we had something like this for the European market. It's almost impossible to find reasonable deals on vintage woodworking in mainland Europe as far as I can tell.
This made me think about an old parody on Star Trek, 2 quotes.... "Captain! Captain! The Stars all went out!" "Turn on your viewing screen dummy! "There is intelligent life here, but we are only visiting!" I will check it out. I used to be on Sawmill Creek, both for turning and flat work, and they went way down hill....
At the moment I see two possible issues. 1. By letting guest accounts purchase from there you take a chance on scammer payments. 2. What about warranty or guarantee even for a small of a thing as what it's described as? Meaning does the site have warranty or only what the seller says?

How about getting a few of your woodworking compadres to donate logo stamped hand saws for auction? Do a guest appearance in their shop, collect the saw, and do a build together while promoting your site. Yeah, simple for me to say.
This is a great thing, Rex! I have been restoring axes (and other tools) for quite some time but don’t have FB and haven’t really wanted to sell on EBay. Think you should make an app for this new marketplace for sure!
International Sales?
We're working on that very hard!
@@RexKrueger I am waiting patiently for it then! (from Chile, in my case c:)
Awesome, Rex! I really hope it succeeds!!! 😃
And I hope someday it gets to Brazil as well. 😬
Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Ebay is the only place I can but the knife I been carrying since just before going into Iraq in '09 cause they quit producing that model of sog....!o snap just got to you unveiling your platform, GOOD SHOW OLD BOY!
This is super cool, I'm really excited for it
Great idea, I really like the concept! It would be awesome if there was a version available for the EU market as well - I think it could expand opportunities and attract more users. Do you have any plans for a European expansion?
Great idea Rex! Best of luck!
Hey Rex is this worldwide?
US and Canada today. Tomorrow, the world!!
Amazing, Rex; thank you!
Channelling Doug Demuro here Rex. Love it! Why not call it Tools and Bids?
Excellent idea!
Unfortunately I live in South Africa - shipping costs from what to me is the other side of the planet (literally) is likely to be prohibitive . . .
Just signed up! Looking forward to buying some starter hobbyist tools
Signed up, I am excited!
Bold. Wish you luck with this!
Genius, thanks for making this happen!
Great idea. I'm already signed up!
Congrats on a great idea
Dayum dude, where was this 20-30 years ago when I was actively collecting vintage tools, especially planes?!?
Good luck with your new endeavor. But I am a power tool guy.🙂🙂
This. Is. Amazing.
This is really cool. I need a rabbet plane if anyone has one on there. I saw one, but it was missing the fence.
Are you going to have suggestions on how to ship saws, planes and other weird sharp things? I have no idea how to wrap a hand saw.
Wrapping and taping thick cardboard around the blade is one option. Or do something comparable with thin plywood/hardboard. You could add a length of scrap wood to reinforce it further. It doesn't need to look pretty.
It's too bad people don't learn what you try to teach. I like the way I buy older tools. Good luck.
Sounds good. Exciting even. What will your business mechanisms be to protect participants (both sides of a transaction) from fraud and bad actors?
LOVE the idea!
Exciting news!
Just for you to think about… Is this just for woodworkers or do you intend it to be for all sorts tools?
USA only. I wish he would have made that clear at the start
Rex, i dont see any stanley #45 combinplane and spare parts there ! Happy to see where all this goes, will logon tonite to see more.
"There is intelligent life here, but we are only visiting!"
I will check it out. I used to be on Sawmill Creek, both for turning and flat work, and they went way down hill....
Oof, this is a good idea. This has big potential me thinks.
Love this Rex! 🎉 Hope will this work for us Canadians up north with regards to shipping and USD conversions? eBay is a nightmare for us 😢
You had me right up until fees, ebay is completely free now
This is so great!
Cool. I'm in!
Thank you!!!
ROUTER PLANE TIME HERE WE GO
At the moment I see two possible issues.
1. By letting guest accounts purchase from there you take a chance on scammer payments.
2. What about warranty or guarantee even for a small of a thing as what it's described as? Meaning does the site have warranty or only what the seller says?
