- The HBC Heritage Trail is a newly restored route crossing the Cascade Mountains in British Columbia, 74 km from Hope to Tulameen. Our plan was to fastpack the trail over two days, spending a night at one of the many free campsites along the way.
The HBC Heritage Trail, also called the Brigade Trail, was a route originally used by First Nations for hunting and trade. It then played an important role in the European fur trade in British Columbia between 1849 to 1860, after the Hudson's Bay Company adopted the route. The wilderness trail reopened in 2015, allowing us to once again cross the Cascade Mountains by horseback or by foot.
Filmed within the traditional and unceded territories of the Stó:lō, Nlaka'pamux and Syilx/Okanagan Nations.

Hey Jeff. Well done. We were the 3 peeps there two weeks before you as mentioned at the logbook. Just wanted to mention that you unfortunately missed the best scenery by far at the Conglomerate (nicest) Camp just to the left of the junction where you turn right to Palmers Pond. We spent a glorious night under the stars there. You definitely need to make a return trip someday to enjoy it in it's splendor sometime even if only for a night there. Also can climb Davis Peak and another slightly lower peak right there from camp to make it more interesting and for the fantastic 360 above. We never saw a soul our entire trip as well. Except for a few curious free range cows along the Whipsaw Road that were entertaining. Take care.
Sure, rub it in, rub it in...to us Ontarians (and rest of the world probably). Another superb trail from super natural BC! Kudos to those who have had the initiative to restore and enhance it! 👏👏👏

I just backpacked the trail in 5 days. There was another couple that were fastpacking over 2 days when we started in Hope. I couldn't imagine running the trail, but then again my pack weighed over 45 lbs :)

It took me eight days but I could have done it in seven. I went west to east. I can't even remotely imagine doing it in two days.
Glad you enjoyed the trail. I spent a lot of time with fellow volunteers from the Hope Mountain Centre working on the trails. Many great memories of the weekend work trips.

Excellent video buddy... you got the same weather as me each of the 3 times I've done the trail. Let's go back for an adventure next year... "perfect weather dependent". Haha. BTW, the 50 mile race adds 3k at the start... which is from the firehall in Tulameen. Cheers
Ah that makes sense that they’d start right in town for the race. You’re the one who gave me the idea for this route, so sorry we didn’t manage to get together on it! Let’s do something together soon.

Nice video, Jeff. You definitely have your own style among the run vloggers. I see you didn't bother with the X2 for this one. I guess weight is always at a premium when fastpacking. I like to keep my pack around 5Kg. What was yours?

The trail wasn't built by the HBT. They learned about it from Stuwix people (indigenous) who used it before HBT to travel across the Cascades to trade with other indigenous on the coastal side, and to get chert from the Cascades for arrowheads, etc.

That’s true! I rematched it recently, so recognizable.
Quite a bit shorter (~15-20km with some additional unmarked side trails if you want to go farther) but if you're looking for another underused trail in the interior, check out the Hornaday Pass Trail between Elk Valley Hwy and Bull River FSR. I dragged a bike through it in 2018 and would love to return without a bike! The trail was named after William Hornaday who spent a month there in 1905 (and wrote about in in a book called Campfires in the Canadian Rockies, which can be found online for free). Beautiful views, natural springs, interesting history.

Wonderful! I am hiking this trail later this year! Thankyou for the wonderful intro to it and a look at the campsites! Quick question, was there any bad surfaces for dog pads? Dog feet? It looked mostly dirt and forest from your video but I’m planning on taking my two Aussie Shepard’s with their packs too and worry about sharp/bad trail for their feet..should I bring their boots? Thank-you so much and it was a very awesome video! ( second time watching it now lol! )
Thanks! It was mostly dirt, but there was a bit of rockier terrain from time to time. I don’t think it would be a problem though. Enjoy!
