  • Waking up to a magnificent campsite in the Baviaanskloof, we take a slow morning to get ourselves ready for an epic adventure Overlanding through some incredible scenery. I get behind the wheel of a Landcruiser 79 Series for the first time as we meander through theh Baviaans, stopping for fresh roosterkoek at Vera's Restaurant and then making our way toward the Sewefontein farm where we walk through the wild fig tree forest and drink from one of them many clean mountain spring fountains. The landcruiser and Hiluxes bring us safely to our next campsite Doringkloof; where we might not be at a bushcamp, our afternoon doesnt suffer for a second, we have a lovely braai during sunset and enjoy the milkyway over us!

    Well done on this episode. A pleasing showcase on remarkable places to visit in Sth Africa. When on tarmac, and unless towing a heavy trailer, the Hilux is the more comfortable and less tiring vehicle to be in. It's quiter, has supportive seats and more modern inside. It's when the road finishes, and the track starts that the 70 Series shines. Give it a real off-road challenge and it'll show it's a class above and conquer.

    We also slept over at Doringkloof, in one of the chalets, that same night. We arrived late afternoon and apparently missed all the mountain bikers 😁
    I also over landed the kloof from Willowmore to Patensie with a Hilux GD6 2.4, stock standard. I’ve just upgraded the tyres and I love it.
    Great episode and adventure!

    This series is making me want more than I already do, to do an overland trip in Sth Africa. Some superb locations you've shown so far. Looking forward to the next episode. IMO, when on bitumen, the Hilux is the better vehicle to be in. But when doing challenging off-road tracks, the 79 Series Land Cruiser is several cuts above. Plus it has a cool old school look, that it seems never gets old (ironically).

      Brakes (incl. handbrakes) is widely know as Toyota 4WDs Achilles heal. I have an 80 Series Land Cruiser, and the very first mod I did when I got it in 2018 was to upgrade the brakes with straight swap high performance heavy duty dba rotors and Bendix pads. And the improvements where immediately felt.

      Hahah noted! I try and just let the story tell itself and let it be as long as the content I have for a given time. It's always difficult to strike a balance between a comfortable duration thats entertaining and something that is a bit too long and boring. One of my favourite things to do is watch the series again once all the episodes are out, its fun to relive the experience :D

    I just don't see the appeal of the Land Cruiser for the average overlander, they are uncomfortable and overpriced. Far better all round vehicles out there for a ton less money that don't need any modifications.
    Keep up the great work!

    • @RoamOverlanding
      @RoamOverlanding  2 роки тому +2

      I agree with the cruiser, it’s definitely a niche vehicle that you have to be very well financed to make good. But when it’s good, it’s the great 👌🏻

    Hi Adrian, another UA-cam channel I follow, Tread the Globe, are travelling round the World in a camper van. They are currently in their 3rd or 4th year and have had to change routes a number of times due to covid and politics. This week they announced their new route, currently they are doing States,. Canada and Mexico, next will be Australia then Asia then finally Southern Africa. Maybe you could show them a little of the area when they arrive in a couple of years time. They would not be able to follow you to your more interesting destinations as their camper van is an 18.5 year old Fiat Iveco.

    • @RoamOverlanding

      It should be fine in the dry season, and I think quite tricky/dangerous if it’s very wet! So just keep in touch with the local farms and campsites to find out about water levels

    Do you see yourself owning Cruiser in the future,after testing its raw power.?

    • @RoamOverlanding
      @RoamOverlanding  2 роки тому +1

      I love the power; but I think there are many other factors holding me back from a cruiser; a big one is not having an automatic gearbox; then its down to how much work has to go into it to make it a comfortable driving experience.

    Landcruisers are over rated, heavy and over priced, yes, they will last a lifetime (and beyond), i`d rather have a 4x4 Hilux or a Fortuner!

    • @RoamOverlanding

    • @jimbojims
      @jimbojims 2 роки тому +4

      They’re not overrated, they’re just built to handle far more demanding situations than what you’re using them for. No disrespect but a Subaru could have done that trip. There wasn’t really any 4x4ing that I saw. Landcruisers are built for an overland of the African continent or the Russian Arctic etc. Not necessarily what the average overlander needs but that’s their design and durability intent.
