How To Buy The BEST Quality Spices & Not Overpay For Them

  • Buying fresh, high quality spices is so important because they can deliver massive flavor to any recipe. Buy why would you overpay for spices in a glass jar that have been sitting on the shelf for goodness knows how long! Instead, buy 2-3 ounces of spices in the bulk section, or better yet, a spice shop in your city. Those spices turnover very quickly and much less expensive. I good shop will have fast turnover, so I would not worry about how long the spices have been there. Mad love..Bobby, Dessi, Rose, and Art! XOXO

The three main problems with spices are: air, heat, and light. The sealed small glass containers are sealed from air, whereas the large bulk containers allow more air to degrade the spices. The more times they are accessed, the more air gets in to degrade them. Also, who knows if the older spices get dumped before adding the newer/fresher ones. As to heat, most people don't grab the jars for any length of time, so that wouldn't be a huge problem. If the store got so hot as to cause a problem, then it wouldn't matter what container or for how long it stayed there. Again the larger containers would allow more light degradation than the smaller ones. While I agree with you in theory as to price, the cons are something to consider.

    • @boop4904
      @boop4904 2 роки тому +7

      Exactly.
      1. You don’t know how long the bulk spices have been sitting there either. Bulk doesn’t necessarily mean “gone fast.”
      2. The old spices are very likely to just be mixed into the new spices when they’re replenished.
      3. Air gets in every time someone opens a bin to get some, speeding up the degradation process.
      4. A lot of maskless people breathe and talk over those large open containers (like Bobby did) as they scoop.
      No thanks; I’ll pass.
Love Bobby, but his “buy bulk spice” reasoning doesn’t make sense (and has a bit of an ick factor) when you think about it.

Hi Bobby. Your work ethic has paid off and is still going. Thank you for grinding out so many videos and even shorter vids that mean lesser money. Truly are an inspiration to Rose when she gets older of a hard hard worker. I love that you continue to call us family and are so down to earth and take advice of videos and actually do them differently and so well to the last one you put out. So happy for you to be working with chipotle i go there almost as much as you maybe a little more ;) and so happy a company you love saw you for you and what amazing things you talk about. I know those mystery thumbnail art gets many viewers i think you should stick with that thumbnail more often ;) So happy those blow up and you’re getting more family members. Loved the live stream last night and so happy those are doing well too. Thank you for taking the time out to read this I really mean it. And everything i say 100x over. I hope selling your place is going good too. You deserve a better place to grow with Dessi and Rose. Can’t wait for all the new videos you come up with.

The real salt is very nice. I now use my Kosher Morton salt to clean my wonderful cast iron pans. Another benefit of buying from bulk is you can buy what you know you will use and won't have to toss it ($$ lost) as you said. Spice Houses have some nice blends but like you tell us READ THE LABEL.

If you ever buy spices at Penzey’s, they tell you that spice crops are harvested and packaged once a year, meaning that you can buy a full year’s supply at once (and Bobby’s tip doesn’t really make sense unless that’s last year’s crop in the jar).
The most important thing is to buy from a store that sells a lot, whether in the jars or bulk section.

This was exactly my thought. He mentioned that they probably do change out their items quickly, which is probably true. I do however agree with buying spices in bulk just because it is more cost effective; I just buy my own spice jars from Amazon to store them. I go to Mom’s Organics for all of my bulk items; the one by me definitely replenishes their spices often.

Believe it or not make ur own spices poweder from whole spices than buying the powder one as whole spices freshness last longer than the ground one. Coffee grinder is also works good to grind whole spices like cumin..coriander seeds..cloves...cardamon etc..dont put spices like the cinnamon or nutmeg etc. The freshness you will be getting from this is way better...try it.

My only gripe with this is simple.. we don't KNOW how long these bulk spices have been sitting around and we don't know how long the prepackaged ones have been sitting on shelves either. There really is no surefire way of knowing this. I mean Whole Foods is an amazing store and they PROBABLY don't sit long but honestly, how can we be entirely sure? I love this channel because the content is informative but I can't apply every single piece of advice to my family(not that we are expected to or anything). I would have to know for certain that bulk spices aren't sitting around for months for me to change entirely to them..and just saying "well it's in Whole Foods" isn't enough "proof " for me, if that makes sense. Loving the shorter videos Bobby!

I agree and you also don't know whose hands were in them or spoke over them like Bobby did. I buy my spices from Penzey's. You can buy a jar or bulk and the person who fills your order is named. In a supermarket you don't know what stock person took care of the spices or handled it. SORRY..

I'm gonna say this now. Skip the store spices. They sit in warehouses forever and then sit on the shelves forever as well. (As he says in the videos) this includes bulk btw. I highly recommend MountainRoseHerbs.com. I've never had better spices than what I get from them, and they are also extremely fairly prices on their spices. You can get all of them as full unground spices too if you want to grind your own spices (which you can't beat fresh ground spices). They do however take about a week to ship out.

Bulk spices never seem to sell where I shop. There’s all these little bags, twistee ties, lots of hands in the jars, scoops that are used on multiple spices... seems very unhygienic. honestly the jars are fine for just about everything except green herbs (exception is oregano). I will shop in the bulk aisle for things that I know are going to be hard to find or cost much more in the small jars such as poppy seeds, bulk chili peppers.

Even organic ground spices loose essential oils n flavour. Healthiest is buy organic whole spices, lightly dry roast on very low heat, cool n grind to not fine, store in clean dry glass bottles n store in fridge they'll keep fresh for an year.most important is buy freshest spices according to their season, some mature in summer, some in winter. Thank you again Bobby and Art for another great video! Unfortunately for me I can't find any stores that sell spices in bulk.

The bulk spice containers are always a big germ fest. Who knows how many fingers, and dirty fingers at that, have been across the opening. How do you use spices that are as long as 6 years old and I've never really been disappointed with the flavor, but I'm sure that fresh spices are better. I just focus on buying organic spices, and I'm satisfied enough with that.

I'm from new York( the bronx), a nutrition student , don't drive, the only shop around my area is shoprite and I work there as well. I don't see many of the products you talk about 🤧🤧

Thank you for your videos, Bobby and Art!!!! We have learned so much!!! My problem with purchasing in bulk is that my husband has Celiac Disease and cannot tolerate any tiniest of gluten particles. Do you have any suggestions? Thank you!

Love the shorts in Jan Bobby and Art. Will you feature the bulk section in one of your shorts?

Bobby, you didn't mention the Spice House. 1550 N Wells, in Old Town. I live close to the Coffee, Tea Exchange. I'll have to check it out. Great Video!

Good video. Didn't know that about salt. Will try raw salt. I'm paranoid about buying bulk items where anyone can stick their bare hands in. I'm not that trusting.

How long have those spices been sitting in the bulk section more exposed to air.
