Love your videos. Bentonite is a swelling clay. It can absorb up to 8 times its own volume in water. So as it expands it seals up any cracks or crevices. So long as it remains saturated with water it will seal the pond keeping the water in which leads to happy bass and other aquatic life.

One thing my family did to counteract those hot Texas summers at our farm pond was drill a well next to the pond and add a windmill. It provides a nice steady flow of oxygenated water when we hit these dry spells like this summer. It is obviously all wind power so no extra costs included after its installed and pretty low maintenance unlike some sort of electric well pump system.

Fish are very versatile they have an adaptation that allows them to survive being frozen, there was a case in Japan where a guy got hundreds of supposed "dead" carp and froze them into an ice rink. Obviously, no one liked it and he melted it when he did many of the fish were still alive so he was charged with animal abuse but it shows how tough fish are.

jon, you still got a lot to learn about a body of water that size. If you can see the fish in more than 24 inches of water that means your algae bloom wont hit, which means no food for the baitfish, which means no spawn of any kind, which means you need to fertilize the water. crystal clear water for a fishing pond is a big no no. also, if you dont dig a well to supplement the water level in summer months, you will be right back where you are now in three years. the pond WILL turn without an additional source of water, and even an acre is not big enough in texas.

Seems shallow. May just be the angle idk but I learned the hard way. When your able to build from scratch like this you should be at 30/70 on depths for a healthy trophy lake. Florida strain need security and overall freedom which can only be gained with deeper water to feel safe and stress free. They will be stunted if this doesn’t occur. Especially in such a small tank.
Also throw about 2-300 lbs of oak leaves in two times in the fall/winter and watch what takes place .
    Good luck with the project.

If you have to drain your pond (not a totally bad idea as it will just about guarantee a sealed bottom) is there a company in your area or even state that hires out 10 or 20 thousand gallon holding tanks? I know there's any number that will SELL you one (not a terrible idea), but not sure on rentals. Maybe hiring one or two of those for a few months to drain and fix the pond then have the water on hand to start filling back up.
I've seen a LOT of pond builds over the years and there are TWO options. FAST or RIGHT. The two are usually mutually exclusive.

Hmm, you live in flat lands. I live in hill country. If that was my land, 8 acres I think you said, I would have 'landscaped' several hills on the property. Depending on the soil, it may not have been high quality, but you could enrich it fairly easily. Any hills built would settle for years to come unless you used one of those sheep's foot things to properly compact it. Add trees and shrubs, maybe make a mini golf course or disc golf course.... Unless you are planning crops.

I wonder if that monster sized green sunfish is still in there, the one you found when you first bought the place. If there is a leak then two solutions, when BamaBass built his lake the damn was leaking, he poured some kind of non toxic sealant in and it fills in the cracks and expands, fixed his leaking damn. There is also always the well drilling options to refill it. I hope you stock your Maine pond again with an aerator this time.

Jon B go watch Bama Bass pond build. He had a leak in multiple spots and didn't have to drain his pond. It's a two part process that you just pour out in the water around the pond and it finds the leak sealing it
