I don't often comment on youtube videos but I have to let you know how much your art moved me. It made me feel so so good, this whole video is so relaxing and soothing. Thank you for inspiring me to do more of this kind of art.
Orla, I find your works tremendously exciting, energy pours out. At the same time I feel happy and peaceful when I look at them. Small beginnings produced a lovely body of work.
As a more tradtional landscape painter it is always interesting to see how abstract painters tackle the subject. I have tried abstract painting in the past but always give up after a few hours because I am not satisfied with where I am going with it. I think it is probably the hardest discipline in art because you have no reference points and everything is coming from the imagination, memory and feelings. I know you can reference photos, sketches etc of the actual landscape but they have to be converted into abstracted emotional imagery in order to not end up with a representational painting. I shall keep watching your videos and maybe I shall feel inspired to give it another go.
I was hesitant about the possibility of those bright pinks and yellows turning into something that looks like a feeling I have when I’m in nature but you absolutely captured those feelings in such an inviting way. I feel like I could look at these and meditate back on so many pleasant voyages.
This was wonderful to watch while I ponder what I will paint today in my studio. You paint with such freedom and fearlessness. I love your positive vibe and dedication to follow your dream. Thank you for sharing!
Oh my goodness, SO much inspiration here! Your process, your techniques, your layers and textures...loved it all, so juicy lol. Thank you for such a valuable video, it was a pleasure to watch and listen to you work. :)
The colors, the compositions, the textures...everything is so beautiful. This really inspired me tonight to draw as well, thank you! ✨ (and shoutout to the cats I couldn't resist to look at, when the videos started)
Hey Orla, Thank you so much. I am struggling with my creativity for years now due to the overthinking and expectations in my head. Yesterday have tried to create based on process similar to yours, and it gave me such relief. It was as if I finally listened to myself. Magic. I really appreciate you sharing your ways. Wonderful work ❤
Hey Orla, I just Found your channel! I love the bold colors and „seeing behind the scenes“ by you showing how much thought and structure goes into a project/art piece. Thank you for sharing.
Weird, I only got 10 seconds in and I already decided that I liked this video so gave it a thumbs up. It may have been the cat? Or it may have been the fact you were on the floor and seeing someone on the floor doing art makes it feel more accessible to me therefore I relate? I relate even though I don't do art, I want to, the joy of looking at art, watching videos or people doing art (here I am now) gives me joy and I want to be able to give myself that joy, that thing I can do on my own, at my home (which I pay ridiculous amount in rent) but no art studio. I think this video spoke to the anxious part of me who doesn't know how to do art but has some supplies. and for that I thank you. I didn't do any while watching this video but I imaged where I could do art while watching this video :D.
Haha the cats are pretty magic 🪄 if you have a corner you can make a mess in and just play, absolutely go for it! A wall, a kitchen table, a floor, doesn’t really matter :) it’s just about getting started, and that doesn’t need to look any certain way to get stuck in and have some fun! ☀️
Hi Orla, I have never seen anyone paint on the floor, it must give you a different perspective, I'm going to give it a try for sure. It was so interesting and inspiring to hear about your thought processes, and I love the alphabet exercise you've used, I'm definitely going to try that too. Thanks for sharing so much background information and for taking the time to make the video. Oh and I love your cats got a bit of air time! 😅
I love it ☀️ Mostly because it lets me move around when I’m working, and it’s great for pouring paint, and shifting the papers or canvases. Helen Frankenthaler inspired the floor working! Thank you; the alphabet idea has come from a great teacher Tom Froese, it’s a really great way to guide a project. Haha its impossible to keep the cats out of the frame, so they get their moment to shine 🐈🐈⬛
Orla! New* subscriber here. I stumbled upon this video and got inspired trying out new things and materials on my paintings to create textures. I often get frustrated whenever I paint something and it always feels flat. This made me realize that I should be more explorative and use anything I have on hand, so thank you. Excited to see more of your work.
Hello! Lovely to have you here :) no worries at all, and good luck with the texture building! It's so fun once you start using anything as a paintbrush! I'm actually releasing a free tutorial all about texture this week on my Patreon, which might be up your street :)
Hi Orla, fellow Scot here🌈 how do you know what to set yourself in terms of projects, I am trying to get more into my abstract art and I find myself just faffing around and not having structure to my sessions, which are very short as I have two kids and work also. Your videos are great and nice to see your process.❤
Hello hello! ☀️ Thanks so much :) I usually try keep lists in my phone or notebook of things I'd like to try out - I'll keep one for materials/processes experiments, and another for more concept/ideas, so that I can easily pull one idea out for a session. Even if that's just prep for it! I also love using timers on my phone when I'm short on time - great for exercises / just getting started / when I'm in a muddle and just need to do something 🌿
Beautiful! Thank you for this video, it really inspires me to reconnect with painting and to play and try. i´m happy i have found this channel and i am curious to discover more of your art work and showing your processes:)
This is so inspiring, especially the theme/ title idea. Haven’t heard of this before, but you really made me want to try this for a series. Also love your work and your process! I’m so glad I found your channel 😄
Hello! Jeannine, I love your channel too: I've been a quiet admirer of both your art and presentation of work and words. Go for it, it'd be so interesting to see how you translate it in your style! 😊
You have such creativity. Im trying and im not doing that good with it. I just started to get into my art for approximately 3 yrs now. I wasted many years not using my gift. But i never could draw off the too of my head. I have to be copying a picture. So the same goes for now. I dont know how to get into my right side of brain and i cant come up with any creativity of my own. But anyways you are a true artist.
Hello 👋 that’s great to hear you’ve been practicing, and thank you for the kind words 😊 I’m sorry to hear your struggling to find your feet - something I like to try when I’m feeling stuck is to start with copying a picture, or working from a reference photo. Then I’ll hide the original reference photo and use my own drawing or painting I just made as a reference to make a new work, and then I’ll use that new one as a reference to paint a new one again - sometimes that step by step away from the original can help ease me into something that’s more my own, and is a great practice exercise x
Hi I am new here. This is my second video of yours that am watching. Lovely! Seeing your style I felt that if you use your paintings for dress designs it will be splendid. Just a suggestion that came to my mind. Maybe tote bags as well.
Hello, and welcome! Thanks for watching 😊 funny you say that; I actually trained in textiles & surface design - creating patterns for fabrics has been right on my mind when making these paintings. Who knows, maybe I’ll get round to translating them over to fabrics one day! ☀️
The paintings came out lovely. Can you do a video about writing your briefs. I like to try this as sometimes when I make art I get lost in the middle or I lack direction. Congratulations on reaching 1000 subscribers, that’s fantastic 🎊 🎉
Good idea! Maybe a separate video on that mid point structure would be good as well? For me I find the getting back on track at the mid point is a different process to the original project brief. I’ll get something planned 😊
@@OrlaStevens Thanks Orla, That is something I will keep in mind. I think because I work full-time, there can be long periods between painting points and then it can be hard to know where it is going. Thank you again for responding and that tip is something I will consider. Thanks again.
Thank you so much, Orla. I would absolutely love to know which other artists (if any) have inspired your work or your approach, and also any books on art, process, technique, or creativity you might recommend (again, if any), please. I would have loved to join your patreon, but can’t afford to as a solo mum. I’m just getting back into art after a 14-year break, and I love your work and these videos. Thank you so much! Cheers from rural Australia. (PS - my g grandparents came from the Isle of Skye; it looks sooo beautiful there! So much natural inspiration in such a dramatic landscape! You’re so lucky to live near such a special part of the world!) Thanks again, Orla xx
Hey! haha great question; 99% of the time they just know not to - plus keeping a cardboard box or cushion close, as it seems to be their preference anyways :)

Orla, I find your works tremendously exciting, energy pours out. At the same time I feel happy and peaceful when I look at them. Small beginnings produced a lovely body of work.
That is so kind, thank you! I’m always looking that balance between excitement & calm in my work so it’s great it is translating 😊

Inspiring - your process. Wondering what kind of pastels you're using? Chalk? Dipped in water?
Thank you! Yes, they’re soft pastels - these ones are Windsor and newton and make a rich almost painterly mark when you dip them in water first :)
What is the title of the first song? Thank you! Love your channel.
Lovely work! What is the rug you’re painting on?
thank you! It's one I picked up from Ikea last year :)
Hi! Can I ask what brand is your sweater?
of course, it's a collab between satu maaranen & petit bateau🌊
Please could you tell me what the liquid is that you are dipping your pastels in? Thank you! xx
Of course! It’s just my paint water (which I probably should have changed quicker…)
