  • Holacanthus ciliaris get their title from the speckled, blue-ringed black spot on their heads resembling a crown. With electric blue bodies, blazing yellow tails, and light purple and orange highlights, Queen Angels are the among the most striking of all reef fishes. Other common names include; blue angelfish, Golden angelfish, queen angel, and yellow angelfish. They are found near reefs in the warmer sections of the western Atlantic Ocean. Queen Angelfish reach up to 18 inches and 3.5 pounds. It is truly one of the most iconic species on reefs in the Caribbean Sea. It is not generally recommended for novice aquarists. In the wild it primarily feeds on sponges, however it will ingest algae, plankton, hydroids, tunicates and bryozoans. Often difficult to get to eat in the tank, aquarists train their queens to accept; shrimp, squid, opened shellfish, spirulina, and algae. Zucchini and spinach are often accepted. Enjoy...

Beautiful fish Bob. I had a large salt tank about 22 years ago. Never kept a Queen Angel, but I did have a French Angel and a Navarchus (Majestic) Angel. Thanks for sharing. 👍

And I'm heading to Chattanooga in a bit to see my sleep doctor, right after getting an epidural. Doc appts fill the calendar today. IF the airport coops, the Great Barrier Reef Store gets new fish this evening. The puffer is in the largest tank against the front wall. Plan is for me to get there EARLY one day, when I can stay home that day, and bring the puffer for a trial with the other fish it was with, and of course Mellon the Puffer. Its a big one, enjoy Ed.

ahhahaha holy Grail. This Angel fish looks awesome , how large will be the aquarium you will be keeping it? and do you have Corals in that aquarium, I know they love to peck on reef and stuff...Really nice share friend

This is a 125 gallon. At full size, a 150 is recommended. It's a couple years away from full size. It's only 6 inches or so now. It was selected as it does eat corals. This tank has none and will not have any. Those go into the 40 breeder with fish that are considered coral safe. This tank will have some Xinia and other soft nasty tasting corals, that he might try but will leave alone, hopefully, due to their toxicity and nasty taste. Those are growing rampant in the little ten gal i show frequently. Thanks Raleigh for the questions.

Are they the fish that need sponge in the diet? Great looking fish

    • @CaylorsReptilesAquatics

In the comments I covered that. In the wild they eat sponge. But a tank raised fish like this has already been trained to eat: Jumbo Mysis, Blood Worms, Spirulina Shrimp, and Jumbo Krill. All frozen. In addition he eats cooked spinach. He ate great at the store, and in this vid, also this am. They dont NEED sponge that's just what they eat in the wild primarily. They are also notorious coral eaters, which I don't have in this tank. Thanks Dave.
