- I'm working on evolution simulation game The Sapling, my solo indie game project. It's a game where you can basically do two types of things: on the one hand, there are a number of scenarios tasking you to design an ecosystem that meets specific requirements, on the other there is a sandbox where you can build your own plants and animals, turn on 'random mutations', and see how they evolve.
In this video I explain various new features related to seeds spreading over bodies of water.

Suggestion: add a feature where plants can emit an aroma that animals can smell even if plant out of normal sight range
I feel like that would be hard to visualize i mean its a good idea but you cant really see smell

@@nightman706 a sphere centered on the plant emitting an aroma with a voulume shader that produces some kind of pollen/aroma particle within the volume. shape and colour of the particles could be altered based on species. i would imagine aroma per fruit would be quite complex and not provide much benefit versus just making an aroma producing plant smell. if a plant has been stripped of fruit its aroma is removes, if you wanted to give a faux simulation of each fruit producing a scent, you might increase the distance the aroma spreads based on the amount of fruits the plant currently has on it.

Problem is that now that there will be a fruit editor, I don't see why there shouldn't be a leaf editor too, taking away the system we already have for leaves, because presumably the different shapes and features you can give your fruits will affect their traits and stats, therefore having such a system for leaves that can be manipulated by evolution would make for even more random and unique plants!
Maybe there should be editor for all parts.

Suggestion: all animals are currently bilateral, and slower or immobile radial animals would be cool. The game is awesome anyway :)

If you see well. It is not possible for an animal to be immune to Toxin A and Toxin C at the same time. instead of a slider, add multiple choice buttons like in ABC plant toxin, or add a slider in ABCA order. The first option, in my opinion, gives you more freedom to expand

Well spotted! I actually tried to avoid having a rock-paper-scissors system and instead have one immunity that is slightly 'better' (B, because immunity to A and C can relatively quickly be added/evolved), but as a result of this would also be the first target for plants.
I think it would be cool if there would be seasons where the water levels rise making in land lakes connect with the ocean allowing sea creatures to migrate into the lakes

Yes I will also be checking in on this game again, the game could REALLY use some optimization (I fully populated planet literally runs at 10-20 fps for me right now 💀)
@@squaremantis Me too i usally have a full ocean and some small land animals but instead i have a windows with not that good specs and i get 10 too 12 fps (Other games run up too 30)
@@gamesforgames1727 I literally have a 2060 that can run no mans sky at high settings 75 fps yet this one can't even scratch 20.... The worst part is that it BARELY uses any of my computer's GPU or CPU, its at 20-30% usage at 10 fps half the time. While I absolutely commend the developer of this game for creating such an elaborate evolution system as a one man dev, this certainly needs a lot more optimization...
@@squaremantis It will only get worse as new features & mechanics are added, I hope he takes the time to really buff out the major hiccups I've noticed so far; literally every time I play it ends with a crash.
@@squaremantis It's a bit like cities skylines how it uses lower power but gets very low fps.
the gas fruits are so cool!! i think delaying/offsetting the the swaying animation on the gas fruit will make it look even more like they are loose from the tree🤩
That's really smart just offset the current animation by like 1/4 of a cycle behind the rest of the plant and it will definitely look like it's floating (if the animation system accommodates that)
Yeah totally agreed, the to do list item 'improve gas fruit animation with delays' was only postponed to somewhere after the update because it took too much dev time to get right

Watching the game change is almost as fascinating as seeing the chaos of letting the sim run. Getting to experience a taste of how things came to be is just so cool.

A good way to fix this is starting with one major continent. That eventually breaks up into multible, causing plants to adapt to tempatures and becoming semi unique to their region, whilst retaining some similar traits. 0:42

Yeah, I’m sorry but there are multiple problems with that.
1: it would completely render part of the world creation useless, because then there would be no reason for a mountain height option.
2: Mr. Stoop may have problems coding it, due to it being extremely complicated, and
3: every computer that runs the game with this feature will imitate a jet engine and blow up.
I see your thought process, though.

@@de-zo6ex I think, we will not get something like this. The game is about PLANT EVOLVING. That mean that, grass would be something like really small plants REALLY CLOSE together. And this just cant our computers handle. But by the VISUAL side, there is chance to get it. Method like: !surface coloring" would be best solution for it. (Something like in the game Equilinox) :D
I’d love to see you add armor, shells and more to the game. Armor like the ones used by Armadillos, Pangolins, Ankylosaurs, Etc. Shells like the ones on Turtles, Cephalopods, Snails, etc. and more types of clawed limbs and horns

Have you ever considered adding a ground cover editor? This could include small shrubs, grass, and maybe even microsopic organisms down the line. The ground cover would provide cover for pray, drain nutrients from larger plants and even fertalise certain areas of soil. This would be incredibly interesting and a fun addition.
This is a list of things that I would like to see in the next update. I know this is a lot but I really think this could improve the game so much and make it so much more interactive and fun to look at.
general:
Bigger maps
Better camera movement
Natural rock formations
Plants can’ grow inside rocks
Waterfalls and streams can generate
Caves can be added but there are only like 2 or 3 in a world so there’s not too many
Caverns underground where plants and animals could live in
Mountains have custom rocks that can fall and cause an avalanche (same with snow)
Stuff like mud or sand could form on wetter or dryer spots forming various terrain difficulties
Plants:
Plants can be smaller
Multiple layers of plants can form like big trees and smaller bushes/undergrowth in between them
Moss can be added by changing the texture and color of the ground
A new type of plant branch where you can make vines or plants without roots
Another new branch that introduces mushrooms of all kinds that can act like the other plants do
Plants/ mostly mushrooms that could make their own energy without sunlight for underground ecosystems
Animals:
Animals can be smaller
New skin type that's like an exoskeleton that can protect animals from attack
Animals can work together like carnivores hunting in packs or herbivores in herds (i know this one’s a stretch and that it would be hard to implement into the game but it would be soooooo cool)
A new type of legs that let animals hop like frogs or grasshoppers
Insect like wings that can only be used by smaller animals
Swinging arms like monkeys would be so cool and could set the game up for a future update adding sentience
New body parts that could animals could use in underground ecosystems

Add new scenarios to introduce people to the new features like say, you need to create a plant species that spreads to a certain island but you can’t plant plants on that certain island

i just I've been following the game's development for the last year and its amazing how much progress it already made! I just have so much fun playing it and seeing the ecosystem, even sometimes it can lag. But i think it would be nice if in the next updates could have an option to happen kind of events on the planet, like in scenarios wich have the coming of a meteor, and a ice path created in the sea with the changes of the weather, just an ideia

With what you said in the last video and what you have shown in this one, i expect the full name of the next update to be "the food and fungi" update.
I thought it would be fruits and roots because that was the only item in a update I needed..
fungi? did i miss something? the major things i see in this updates are tons of plant customization, poison, instinct overhaul, and new mouthparts.

I believe you could take some of the features from the plants and implement them into the animals, such as venom and shells! This could open up "striker" and "tank" niches (like a snake and a turtle) along with adding various fang, stinger, etc, designs and various shells from things like armadillos, turtles, and ankylosauridae carapaces!

Suggestion: sun and shade.
Currently, the only interaction animals are having with plants is as food. I'm wondering if it would be possible to introduce shade. This could be in the form of decreasing available sunlight for smaller plants, and decreasing to nearby temperature.
I think this could make some plants act like habitats for hot blooded animals (fur), and something to be avoided for cool blooded animals (scales)

I'm so glad the instinct UI is changing. Just picked up this game the other day and got really frustrated trying to get it to work properly. This already looks more user friendly and flexible. Can't wait to try it out
suggestion: add an option to disable certain parts from ever evolving.
ex: if you dont want plants to take over, and want two completely different ecosystems, you turn off the coconut. if you dont want flying animals, turn off wings, etc
Hey, thanks for this suggestion! I've seen it suggested a few more times in the past, so (without making promises), it's definitely something I'm considering.
idea to expand eating evolution:
small animals or fruit can be grabbed by flying creatures or creatures with grabbing appendages (like elephant trunks) and moved to another place.
this consumes more energy but the creature have less chance of being eaten, less chance of it's food being stolen or it can even store food for future meals.
You mean food storage in nests, for example?
The poison feature also enables a temporary advantage to fruits, because any animal who eats them will die quicker, which will cause the seed to be planted. It’s only temporary though, because the animals will soon evolve to recognize and avoid those fruits.

I think you could potentially take the whole "eating in the air" idea even further. Maybe add a broad mouth, like that of a swallow, nightjar, bat or anurognathid pterosaur which makes feeding from flying fruits or prey caught mid flight more efficient. It'd be a great way to visualize the new lifestyle the creature decided to adapt
Agreed! I can't really find a common mouth shape that animals living this way often have though, any suggestions?
@@TheSapling Most of the animals that I can think of that feed while flying have rather wide mouths and usually short snouts/beaks. For example swallows, nightjars or anuroghnatid pterosaurs like Anurognathus or Jeholopterus. Bats would also be a good inspiration I think, since the frugivorous species and those that hunt small animals like mice tend to have a longer snout, whereas the ones that hunt/feed while flying tend to have shorter ones. Additionally some bats species hover simliar to hummingbirds in order lick nectar or eat pollen using a really long tongue.
I think mouths inspired by insect eating bats or anurognathids for predators and swallow or nightjar like ones for fruit could work well. Since the mouths of swallows look less dangerous then those of bats even though in reality both eat insects.
Another crazy and very speculative idea could be a mouth like that of a basking shark for flying fruits or specifically the seeds that spread through the air like dandelion seeds. Kind of like an aerial filterfeeder.

We haven't even got into the bug stuff to much, how is this so good ALREADY!! The fruits are awesome. the instinct overhaul is awesome. the stooping is awesome. its all just so good! My only irritation is that i now have to wait a whole week. I also got so happy when i heard about the gas fruits. it shows your not just making an evolution sim with only earth parts, but also will delve into the speculative, which can easily provide amassing features we never could have seen coming. Amazing work man, keep it up. i would have super thanks by now but I'm too poor rn :(
To keep up my tradition of leaving something for you when i drop by, i will give a (somewhat) thought out idea for crests. i got the idea when i put a toucan beak on top of a creatures head (which could be considered a bug) crests could serve a multitude of purposes. they could aid in heat loss,be used to increase airspeed (pterosaur did it) or be used as a weapon / defence. They could hopefully have a great variety in shape too, and maybe there own colour slider (?)

@@dougrious_diswiggle one detail i chose to left out was that i was contemplating the crest to be involved in some kind of mating dance / display that would increase survival chance of the offspring and / or mother. i chose not to add it because that would be a whole thing of its own, crests would only be a small part of the complex clockwork that would inevitably add to the game.

Idea: Mimicry in animals. It be cool to see a plant/animal try to mimic a more dangerous one as a survival strategy.
Yeah I was kind of hoping this would evolve naturally, but I haven't seen it in practice... perhaps with the new range based visual instincts.

If you get to the point that you add scat and defecation; I learned recently that a lot of raptorial birds can track the UV reflections off of rodent urine on the paths that are traveled, and some rodents will actually constantly be peeing.

As what I hope would only take significant time to model, I'd love to see a set of parts which prevents an animal from swimming even when underwater. Maybe add a basic stump looking part that can evolve into the current kost basic fins, but is also capable of splitting off into a seperate series of arthropod-like legs?
If you also make it harder for crawling creatures to hunt swimming ones and create crawling legs which allow a dash once every N seconds, I think that could help seperate out niches a little bit.
Alternatively add a slider for how much plants compete for water/sun that adds energy requirements the same way a larger size does? Hopefully if "plant is bigger" and "plant can handle shade" use up a common resource you'll get seperate species specializing in each instead of creating massive AND shade tolerant plants.

This video is old so not sure you'll ever see this, but a trick to make the "gas bag" seeds look actually like loose floating objects attached by a rope, instead of attached rigidly, would be to just make the gas bag seeds follow the swaying animation on a delay. For example, plant sways slightly to the left, then the gas bag seed does, then plant sways back right, and gas bag follows a fraction of a second later. Would make them look independent, but like they're being dragged along. Idk if I'm explaining it as fully as I'm envisioning it in my head, but yea lol
With the possibility of eating during flight, we can now have birds that hunt fishes

I’m not sure if birds already do, because I’ve never seen a bird in any simulation but i think it’d be cool to see them migrate especially with birds in their fur or in them, so if they migrate to a place with no plants and die a plant in them is planted. I’m not sure how migration could work maybe it could work with seasons or in a later update or even be built in with disasters some how
The game has migration in a simple form (add seasons and an instinct to avoid cold/warm temperatures), but they also spread seeds if you let them fly around at random.

Some random things that u can add: thorns that hurt animals when they try to eat a plant or its fruit, more or less eggs like one animal can lay hundreds of eggs but one can only lay two, and uh thats it for now..

My suggestion for the poison system is this:
Arange poisons on a wheel, say from 0 to 360 deg.
Let an animal be resistant to a poison if it's between some upper bound and lower bound, say 0 to 50.
This animal would then be resistant to some level of poison within 0 to 50 deg, say 25.
if you switch the bounds to 50 to 0 you wouldn't be getting an invalid bound but instead every poison from 50 to 0 is resisted.
So this means poison 180 is resisted.
Poison strength and resistance strength are done as shown in video.
The broadness of the poison resistance is punished more heavily than strength in poison resistance
This would be neat because you could let the sim naturally differentiate species into types, so you don't have 3 definitive types but rather the sim defines itself what the broad types of fruit there are and may evolve as a system to add or remove types
This is an interesting idea. I have yet to investigate how this poison system will evolve over multiple runs, but if it turns out not that many interesting phenomena come from it, I'll definitely revisit this comment, thanks!
