  • On 05/22/2020 at approximately 2053 hours, I observed a motorcycle exceeding the speed limit on north on State Route 3 close to the Clayton County line. I began pacing behind the motorcycle in the northbound right lane to check his speed and paced the motorcycle at 80 miles per hour in a 55 miles per hour zone.
Once I activated my emergency lights to initiate a traffic stop, the driver looked over his left shoulder and began fleeing. During the pursuit, I observed the driver was driving at excessive speeds while actively fleeing. The driver drove in a reckless manner and placed the safety of the motoring public at risk. The driver failed to stop at the red light on State Route 3 and Lovejoy Road. The driver also ran the red light at State Route 3 at McDonough Road where he almost caused a traffic crash. The driver then stopped in the left turning lane north on State Route 3 at Tara Road behind a vehicle where I tried braking to turn around and block the driver path.
The pursuit traveled through Clayton County and into Fayette County. Troop D Communications notified Troop C Communications and advised them the pursuit has entered their territory. I continued to give pursuit of the driver on the motorcycle. The driver made a left onto the wrong side of the road off Tara Road onto Panhandle Road. The driver began passing vehicles on the wrong side of the road and overtaking vehicles as oncoming traffic approaches.
While pursuing the motorcycle, I improperly negotiated a curve and ran off the roadway striking a fire hydrant on Panhandle Road 0.2 miles south of Hampton Road (see crash #C000149773). I continued to give pursuit of the driver on the motorcycle. The driver turned right from Panhandle Road onto Woolsey Road. The pursuit entered Fayette County on Woolsey Road. Once the driver reached the end of Woolsey Road, I observed his taillight traveling south on State Route 92. I then lost visual of the motorcycle on State Route 92 at Chantilly Lane. I notified Troop D communications that I lost visual and experienced a left rear flat tire where I pulled over in a church parking lot.
The driver was found by a Fayette County Sheriff Deputy at 165 Chantilly Lane. TFC Pryor #531 and TFC2 Clarke #495 assisted Fayette County Sheriff Deputies apprehend the driver. The driver was later identified by his Georgia Driver’s License as Devin Cevan Pate with a date of birth of 06/07/1997. Mr. Pate was taken into custody by Fayette County Sheriff’s Deputies. Georgia State Trooper TFC Pryor #531 transported Mr. Pate to my location at Pine Grove Church with an address of 2479 State Route 92, Fayetteville, Georgia 30215. The Henry County Jail was contacted to see if they would take custody of Mr. Pate due to the COVID 19 Pandemic. The jail Jail refused to take Mr. Pate. All charges associated with this event will be handled by TPR Williams #819.
