  • A trip through the wood to retrieve saw logs. How to hook them up with a chain choker and skid them to a landing. Getting the logs situated behind the winch before locking them in place. This also covers rolling a log with the winch, make up of a chain choker and how to get your choker unstuck from under a log.

I'm thrilled to see someone mention using a rolling hitch to clear an obstacle like a stump. So many you tubers just resort to a complete new angle of pull or a time consuming reposition of tractor. Also that you mention turning the opening of the hook away from the direction of pull. That's another thing rarely seen, and I've recently actually seen the exact opposite. You'll get away with it often, but it's a simple thing to switch the way you point that hook. Keep up the good old skills my friend.

    Thanks for taking us along.
Suggest doing the playback at normal speeds and the video will be easier to watch. Fewer jerky motions.
We can always speed it up if we enjoy it better that way. (yes, we can slow it down too, but when already edited at different speeds, hard to keep up).
    Nice rig for logging.

Interesting, I was told my previous videos where to long and I should do some time lapse to keep them from getting boring. I guess I will have to see what the consensus is or try for a middle ground. If the camera is on a tripod the sped-up version works well, when moving on the tractor not so much. I need a really good gimble.

After using tractor with FEL for 16 years getting out wood, it would drive nuts without one now...

THE ROD ON THE END OF THE CHAIN IS CALLED A "WEASEL" AFTER THE ANIMAL.

I'm deciding between a case 1490 and an oliver 1365 both 4wd. Do you ever feel like the oliver is under powered for small scale logging?

As with most things - it depends. I have no problem with power with that tractor. I can pull two 24" diameter 25' long logs of hard maple with it. This is more than the 3pt hitch can pick up with including the weight of the winch. And I can pull them going uphill. The depends part is how fast do you want to go. I am in rough hilly terrain; I don't want to go fast. I usually pull logs in 4th gear low range. I will shift down going up a steep section. I also have a 70 hp tractor but prefer to log with the Oliver. It is much more maneuverable and has better visibility.
I think one of the big considerations for any tractor to be used in the wood is having low gearing. I would not buy one that does not have a low range. I don't know anything about the case, but I really like my Oliver 1365. I do wish it had 4 wheel drive. My Ideal tractor for logging would be something in that 60 to 70 hp range, 4 wheel drive, and a loader with good lift capacity. I am still looking for that in a price I can afford.

BTW - You want lots of weight on the front, I am running about 300 lbs and don't think it is close to too much.
