Agreed for Tintin! Loved that as a kid and I still have the comics today. I also sometimes look at old episodes on the animated series on UA-cam.
I've sometimes thought about what he could cover for it. I go back and forth on Destination: Moon/Explorers on the Moon from the TV show ... but than I wonder if I should include King Ottokar's Sceptre for backstory on the villain in Explorers. It's a tough choice!
I also loved the Wallace and Gromit reference! VERY hyped for the movie later this year! Wouldn't mind seeing him review one of the movies someday :)
Appropriate that you did a review of a Moomins movie on Pride Month. Tove Jansson was a bisexual author who was in a long-term relationship with a woman for the rest of her life.

@@Carlos-bz5oo Snufkin is based on the ex-fiancee, Moomin is based on herself, the girlfrend mentioned, Tuulikki Pietilä, is the inspiration for Too-ticky. The character Vifslan (apparently called Bob in English) is also based on her then girlfriend Vivica Bandler. Vifslan's partner? Tofslan (Thingumy in English) is also based on herself (get it, Tove = Tofslan, Vivica = Vifslan). The Groke is also based on herself.

The Lord of the rings references are fitting because the Moomin author, Tove Jansson, illustrated an edition of The hobbit.
The original book was written in the 40’s and was very much an a-bomb allegory. Which sort of explains the weird tone.
There is an anime movie adaptation of the book made in the 90’s (released with an anime series covering all of the books and some comics) which while less one to one adaptation than the Polish version works better as an independent film

It was also inspired by an eruption of Mount Vesuv and a growing fear of bombing planes - Finnland had switched its loyalties back and forth during World War II after Russia had invaded it earlier in their *cough-cough* "interest of security".

Also, it's weird how "troll" has becomes so many completely unrelated creatures in pop culture and mythology. You got the British giants that turn to stone, the Norwegian giants that already are stone, faerie hippos apparently, green dudes that regenerate wounds, little creatures with wild hair, jerks on the internet, gray-skinned aliens with candy corn horns, etc...
He even reviewed some of the latter. Or at least, the comic they're from, he hasn't gotten to Act 5 yet.
Part of that is because Troll was kind of a catch all term for mystical creatures in Scandinavia and the regions around it.
Basically, what Yokai is to Japan.
They weren't supposed to be one thing with a set of characteristics, but a bunch of nonhuman things humans could encounter.

Trolls are the most confusing of all the interpreted in different ways fantasy creatures.
These critiques are why I prefer the anime movie version of this story. It just brings more logic to the table.
Also this story was written when the fear of nuclear war was brand new and everyone expected the world to be destroyed. The comet being symbolic of the nuclear bombs.
Sure there's the chance of it happening, but as things have gone, the Comet in Moominvalley's prediction was right.

Also: I usually get the logic behind using it, but genuinely unsure deploying that gag was exactly fair here. Usually, it's something at least somewhat trying to be plausible and failing, but here, we're dealing with fairy tale logic.

I see Moomins, I click. Must admit I never saw any of the stop motion series, but I liked what I saw from this.
Strongly reccomend it. It in my opinion has a lot of definitive versions of characters, compering it with that lovely time when moomins got an Anime
I grew up with the 90s anime series, including the movie. Binge watched recorded episodes with my sister all the time, and still have nostalgic feelings towards them.
Funny you should mention The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings so often - Tove Jansson did an illustrated version of The Hobbit in 1960 that actually resulted in a minor rewrite by Tolkien so that it was clear that Gollum was supposed to be an emaciated, Hobbit sized creature rather than the grotesque giant monstrosity that Jansson came up with.
Found the pictures from the said book and Tove Jansson did a splendod job.

Linkara, you really should watch the 90s Moomin anime. It's 70ish episodes long, covers a lot of the lore and books, and has a streamlined cast.
It also has the Groake though, right? That thing from what little I saw was nightmare fuel.
It had two seasons, the first one of which received an English dub and was based largely on previously written stories, while the second season was largely original stories and wasn't dubbed into English.
And yes, this series is where the infamous Groke was at her scariest, if you ask me.

I'm a Finn so the moment this showed up on my feed I instantly had to see this; Moomins is pretty much ingrained in our culture.
Tove Jansson (a lesbian artist and writer) originally drew what would become the Moomins onto the wall of her family home's bathroom as a protest to something against her parents, intending it to be scary, but unwittingly made it look cute, and thus she'd later created the characters proper and write novels about them.
Her works often tackled very deep philosophical and existential conundrums through clever allegory, like the fact Tove Jansson was a lesbian living in a time where it was considered immoral even in Finland. In fact all the characters are inspired by people she knew, like Moominpappa and Moominmamma being inspired by her parents, Snufkin (my absolute favorite character) was based off her ex-boyfriend, at least two of the characters, like Thingummy and Bob and Tooticky were based off her girlfriends (Thingummy and Bob off herself and an earlier girlfriend and Tooticky after her life partner).
Comet in Moominvalley is very much an allegory for the Cold War and the mutually assured destruction scenario; the comet representing an end of the world nuclear holocaust brought on by the U.S. and U.S.S.R., something well beyond the control of a small country like Finland the same way astronomical phenomenon is beyond the world's control. The original novel also actually introduced Snufkin, Snorkmaiden and Snork.
Tove Jansson was also the illustrator for the first Finnish translation of J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit. Just a fun bit of trivia. I think her art style suited the book, though her depiction of Gollum is WEIRD. So suffice to say the Smaug jokes were spot-on.
All-in-all the Polish stop-motion series isn't that great, no disrespect for the people who worked on it. If one is interested in checking out the series outside of the books, I'd recommend the 90's anime adaptation Tanoshii Moomin Ikka, a very much beloved adaptation in Finland on account that it was an international collab between Finland, the Netherlands and Japan with Tove Jansson's brother Lars Jansson as creative consultant. They also did an adaptation of Comet in Moominvalley, though I believe that was never dubbed into English.
The world of the Moomins, while fantastical, is also pretty damn terrifying, seeing as they have giant flesh eating plants (the tree trying to eat Snorkmaiden), dragons (both flying and aquatic kind), the aforementioned Hattifatteners (weird plant-based creatures that are drawn to lightning and deliberately try to get struck by it), giant creatures like the lizard Sniff encountered in this, and an absolutely terrifying monster called the Groke that freezes everything around her and can seemingly teleport.
Also the Moomin Valley economy is WEIRD. They don't seem to believe in money, yet somehow Moominpappa and Moominmamma have a super cozy setup complete with a fully stocked kitchen, Moominpappa has an office with a ton of books (he's a writer constantly working on his autobiography it seems) and he even has a friggin' tobacco plantation in their backyard (in the books since no smoking allowed in cartoons).

Actually there was an english dub for the 1990s movie version. Though according to Wikipedia "An English dub of the film was released on the German DVD titled Die Mumins - Der Komet im Muminland." So it would probably be difficult to find. It also didn't include any of the original actors from the english dub of the series.
Also as far as I know, Tove wasn't lesbian, but bisexual.

Have to admit my experience with Moomins is just a recent extremly chill computer game where you combat the forces of gentrification.

Snufkin is some manner of anarcho-communist, so hearing someone call him a capitalist was bizarre.
Yeah. The context here is that Snufkin can "own" anything by leaving it where it is and just remembering it later.

I found the 90s moomin tv show a few years back through UA-cam compilations and i don't know what it says about me that i unironically like it and have watched more than a few episodes. I'm a grown man and don't have kids or anything. I only saw one episode that i swear i only half remembered while sick in elementary school or something as a kid (so it's not nostalgia) but my god, this show is just so painfully cute and pleasant. Like animal crossing on steroids.
It's definitely one of the best anime series.

....although, the polish version of the moomins, isnt exactly the one I though he was gonna review, but the 90's finno-japanese film, which is very standalone film & beautifully animated.
Fun fact also, in Finnish, the movies name is called Muumit ja pyrstötähti, which directly translates to moomins & the tailed star, which i think sounds cooler, but is essentially just finnish name for comet 😅
Fun fact: The English word “comet” ultimately derives from the Greek word “komētēs” (“with long hair”). I believe the full term was “aster kometes” (star with long hair).

Hell yeah, Moomins. This is one of those funny things how everyone in Finland (and other Nordic countries) is very familiar with them, and that there are in fact people in the world who don't know what the Moomins are :D I've watched Moomins TV- show (the good 90s one) ever since I was a little kid. I can heartily recommend the Tove & Lars Jansson comics, they are funny as all hell and kinda wild.
I had not actually seen this version of Comet in Moominvalley before but I am very familiar with the Dutch/Japanese coproduction movie (tied to the 90s TV show) which is gorgeous, one of the most beautiful animated movies I've seen. There are also some notions of nuclear fear in these later version - while the book was written before first use of nuclear weapons, Jansson has revised the book and the adaptations played up the apocalyptic feel of the comic.
There's a good reason why Moomin isn't much known outside of Europe and Japan. Tove Jansson was actually once approached by Walt Disney himself, who wanted to buy the Moomins, but Jansson refused. That's why Americans hardly know of this franchise.

I recognized Peter Stormares voice and also heard other Swedish accents in the clips. Imdb informs me that most of the English dub is done by international Swedish actors (von Sydow, Stormare, Alexander and Stellan Skarsgård). And also Mads Mikkelsen, who is Danish but speaks Swedish as he studied dancing there.
Tove Jansson was a finswede and spent some years of her life in Sweden. A lot of Swedish dramatisations/dubs of her work are performed with a Finswedish accent as that is what she herself sounded like.
3:36 if you think that's weird wait till you hear about the anime which was made in japan, had help from the dutch and has been translated back to finnish, swedish and english, it's a beloved classic.

Interesting tidbit about this particular story.
Tove Jansson, the creator of Moomin actually put several elements from her own life into the story of Moomin but unlike many modern writers she did it with a lot of subtlety.
The comet making the sky red and Moomin and his friends hurrying home to their family to then hide in a shelter is actually a reference to her childhood growing up in Finland during the world war 2. The air bombing raids made the sky red with fire and it separated families when the men went to war and the women stayed home, not knowing if the other was okay or even alive and families would hide in the bombing shelters thinking they might die and hoping that the bombers would veer away before hitting their position.
I grew up with the Moomin TV series. The 1990 Dutch-Japanese-Finnish version.

My first viewing on Moomins as a kid and now is the 1990 animated show shown on CBBC 'Children's BBC' that takes me back.
I remember as a kid stumbling upon the Moomins books in my Grandad's house, back then I was somewhere around 6? Maybe 7? I had no idea that the series was quite as huge as it was; I thought it was one of those stories that did a few rounds around Europe and eventually hit the UK but I had no idea it was known all the way in America and even Japan (yup, there's a Moomins anime and I gotta say, Snufkin's design lends itself well to the anime style).

Infamously bad? Most people ive seen talk about it have praised the story. It's definitely one of my favorite avengers storylines.

I have seen a few Moomin episodes. The one I remember best is of a magic hat, which would transform anything in it into something else. For example egg shells turns into clouds, that anyone can sit on and drive.
The More i watch you, the more a sense of relief and reassurance. Since I'm someone who has such difficulty being honest with some people when it comes to fandoms. I like a lot of things (Marvel especially), and yet it often feels like i have to enjoy or at least embrace the fandoms of my friends in order to feel close to them, even though i rather focus with what works for me. Which are dinosaurs, cartoons, and Kaiju movies. I like Star Wars and other fandoms just fine, but i rather focus my time on. It's like that Thanksgiving episode from FRIENDS season one, where Monica tries to make a batch of mashed potatoes to please everyone, and it drive her crazy, it's not that she's not willing to do, but trying to make juggle all that to please everyone, is really unessary, especially when it's mashed potatoes, it doesn't matter how their made as long as their made good and edible. Just because i like something that may be of great quality, i much rather stick with what works for me, and i'm glad people like you are trying to let people like me be honest with themselves and their interests.

This has to be the most obscure content ever covered on this show. I grew up with Moomin and I've never even heard of this.
Linkara should have a look at how freaky yet fun the 90's moomins were when he has time.
Because several moments (atleast for the 90's generation of Finnish kids) traumatized people for decades.
I watched the Moomins cartoon show as a kid. I definitely remember enjoying it. I think I watched it around the same time as I was also watching Power Rangers. So even though I haven't seen *this* movie, it was still a nice nostalgia-adjacent feeling. A few references to things I remember mentioned in the show, things like that.

There was a first edition of Comet in Moominland. Then Tove Jansson made a comic about it, "Moomin and the end of the world", with a different story. Then there was a second edition of the novel. Then Tove used the story in the daily comic strip she drew, changing it again. Then the story was used in god knows how many animated variants, including this one. Then there was a new comic version drawn by somone else (I wanna say Mårdön Smed, but I'm not sure). Anyway, I think this is the Moon storyline with the most versions out there. (I can have mixed up the order of some of these). Tove loved disasters in the stories contrasted with everyday life, and this is perhaps the best realized one. Anyway, this as many of the others have changed things a lot. I haven't seen it before and it was fun to see your review of it.
Man, now I'm in the mood to rewatch LOTR.

Believe it or not, this was the first exposure I had of The Moomins - not this movie, but the original Polish stop-motion episodic series. It was shown sometime in the early-to-mid 80's on either ITV or the BBC - can't remember rightly.
I must say, when you did that "bark was worse than its bite" gag, I was half-expecting a whole chorus of boos followed by Brandon Tenold saying "Hey!! I do that gag, hat boy!!!"
Whenever something that’s supposedly good gets a lot of traffic, unfortunately for me what happens nearly every time is that they demand I check this thing out with their main reasoning being they think specific stuff I like is bad.

There was a fake-out, that the comet steered away :D and polish "soft moomins" aren't something I have watched, more familiar with 90s anime and its movie of the comet in moominland so this was nice ☺️

My first college philosophy class was "Modern Philosophy" and Spinoza was the second one we studied right after Descartes. I liked the proposition format of "Ethics..." but dear lord did I find him insufferable and... well, wrong so much. XD
The original story was first made in 1946, and I kinda suspect the whole story kinda deals with anxiety about nuclear weapons. The story was originally released in Ny Tid, a political newspaper, and Tove was generally anti-war.

Awww, i was hoping for the 1954-1975 Moomin comics.
Something that was such an integral part of my childhood being someone elses completely unknowable thing is amusing, if nothing else. Seeing how what is just ingrained as normal becomes something that someone else has to wrestle with is bemusing, though in this instance he really found something even I don't know where it came from. I grew up on the books, the 90's Japanese animation, and the comic books being drawn at the time (anyone out there who remembers the journey to Misanthropolis?), but this Polish stop-motion was very new to me. Interesting, but not the version I prefer. The Snork with a jaunty hat instead of his twink-hair and glasses just feels... wrong.
The book is a classic. I remember my mother reading it to me when I was a kid.
If you ever decide to have kids, I recommend the books so much. They're perfect when you're a small kid, and pretty enjoyable for adults.
That thing you said about an apocalyptic wasteland made me envision Mad Moomin: Fury Road
One of my childhood trauma memories is an episode of the Moomins where some sort of Snow Queen rocks up and turns a squirrel into ice.
I actually have this on DVD. It's nice to put on as some background noise when I'm working on the computer.

I always feel like one of the few Americans with any significant familiarity with the Moomin franchise. I already knew about the cartoon from the 90s. but I've become way more aware of it since becoming friends with some Swedes. There's Moomin stuff all over the place there.

Comet is actually allegory to war in Moomin stories. There are many versions of the story but mostly it tells the story of desperation during wartime, when as a family you can't do much about to solve the situation other than wait or hide or...you get the point.

I love the Moomins, when I was a kid I watched the 90's animated series.
I actually love that you admit somethings just aren't your thing but still being willing to give it a try with these reviews and be open minded and fair with them. No one can or should like everything but people should be willing to give it a chance when they can. You never know what will be the next thing you didn't expect to like but end up loving. Also it gives your reviews an interesting breadth of scope for both content and reoccurring jokes.

The Jansson family has kept the rights of the Moomins so I think that the characters aren't owned by ABC studios.
I go by the copyright info on the DVD, which this particular movie's rights might be owned by them while the Moomins themselves are owned by the Jansson family.
Rights issues are bullcrap.

I have only a passing knowledge of the franchise from seeing a few episodes of the 90s show.
Learning from the comments that this story is war allegory is oddly funny as one of my rpg crew once tried to convince me that the Giff (militaristic hippo-folk) in d&d were moomins who had been exposed to the horrors of war.

MOOMIN YESS. FINNS ASSEMBLE!!!!! Also, reminder in these dark times where fascists are getting rowdy again, that not only did Tove buzz off from society to live the rest of her days alone on an island with her female partner, but she was also a staunch anti-fascist. Apparently she literally made satirical cartoons about the threat of nazis in the 1930s so yeah, no doubt about it. You can also definitely see the themes of personal freedom, disobedience of unnecessarily strict rules in society and the mocking of overly strict controlling people all in Moomin. In other words; Tove Jansson was a very Based queer anti-fascist. Make 'er proud, fellow Finns (and everyone else)

The very first version of the Moomins did look more "troll"-ish with there huge noses. Later on however, the design evolved, most notibly the huge noses terning into the characteristic hippo like snaut

Snufkin is just the English "translation" of Mumrik. I think you are thinking of Joxter/Joxaren/Juksu which is what his father was.

This might be something that was lost over the multiple layers of translation going on here, or was cut for the sake of the joke, but what Snufkin means when he is talking about that he don't believe in private ownership of nature and as such everything "belongs to him" as much as it belongs to anyone else, and he don't need to hoard private objects to have nice stuff he can just go out and look at it and then leave it for others to look at. This is contrasted with Sniff who wants to grab the gems before anyone else does. Moomin is neutral on the issue but leans more towards agreeing with Snufkin because -he has a massive crush on him- they are extra good friends.

Interesting. I've only ever seen the anime movie version of the story. In comparison it puts more money into atmosphere and a snappier pace.
