    Most motion simulation platforms in the consumer market can't support the weight of triple monitor setups, but when the monitors aren't moving with the platform, you end up feeling like you're floating around inside the car.
    At worst, this leads to motion sickness for some people, but at best it takes away from the immersion that would otherwise be possible.
    So today we are going to experiment with a TrackIR5 system to see if we can make our own DIY Motion Tracking system which compensates for the movement of the platform and provides a more immersive sim racing experience!

      I like the headcam more, but it's always tilted to the left because when you move your head to the left the arm on the gopro will extend the radius and it will look further to the left. maybe fiddle with a camera that's fixed and points at the main monitor? :)

    the over the shoulder cam deffo looks really good, I can tell you are moving in the rig because of the screen bezel is moving if I let my eyes watch them, but if I watch the track framed by the roll cage with your shoulder in shot then it certainly looks as if you are one with the car, quite an achievement considering the screens are stationary. Well done

    Hello, great vid as usual. I think it would really be interesting if you could show us how to setup motion compensation for VR using the Reverb G2 which I know is needed the same way screen needs it. I know it might not be as relevant for us watching you drive with your screens, but it would be really helpful for us using VR (HP Reverb G2, inside out tracking) and some sort of motion platform. In my case, I have the G2 in combo with D-Box actuators. I am currently inquiring about this problem as well on my side.
    Thanks for your always amazing and very professional content.

    These are great videos and I appreciate all the work you are putting into this! Part of the issue of the movement mismatch is that the head tracker is positioned behind where your in-game camera is located. I would suggest adjusting your seat position in Iracing to put the virtual camera close to the real life TrackIR position. That will make your TrackIR camera rotations pivot the in-game camera where it needs to instead of behind where you are viewing from. You will need to adjust your studio camera to compensate for the perspective change but it should be worth it. My other area of concern with your method is you are stacking up the latency from the motion platform on top of the TrackIR latency. While both are relatively low latency, added together they do introduce enough to reduce your immersion. Keep at it!

    Attach the screens to a roller system attached to the front of the front of the traction platform. You will have a lot of fun with this rig. I have had mine since late February. Try lots of different settings it will take some time. When driving formula cars in vr the reverb cannot compensate fast enough this still needs work on the traction plus. Motion compensation needs more software changes.

    Would the trackir have an easier time if it was fitted on the new (side) camera profile, the camera could be mounted under the left monitor so it's aligned. Whilst not obvious in the video I would guess the seat mover moving the trackir led's around is causing some of the movement(like the jump to light speed early in the video when you had Y enabled)

  • @mrp32gtr

    First, absolutly one hell of a setup, what an dream rig. Really cool, and thanks for all the great content you put out.
    One question or more some thoughts around my own setup...
    I have limited space for my rig. Only using one single 27" screen ATM. Probably gonna get a bigger screen soon but not sure how big, dont think i can fit much bigger the 49"
    How would a head tracking work on smaller single screen, is it worth it?
    Don't feel like VR is ab option, want to see the wheel and my hands.

    • @boostedmedia
      @boostedmedia  3 роки тому

      If space is an issue I’d definitely recommend at least trying Vr before investing in a bigger screen. You might love it. If you’re going to go with a single screen then really it comes down the the biggest one you can fit practically. Head tracking does work quite well for smaller screens when set up right. Eye tracking is an option too.

    • @boostedmedia
      @boostedmedia  3 роки тому

      I totally agree. I really hope they add a software solution. I think what you see as latency here in the finished result is more just a slight mismatch in the adjustment. Still some fine tuning to do yet to get it perfect.

  • @MikkoRantalainen
    @MikkoRantalainen 3 роки тому

    24:10 It looks like the yaw effect is a bit too much but the latency and directions of the movement seems to be surprisingly good. I would have assumed that correct mapping would have looked like a very wide V with sides of V straight lines (instead of default curves + dead zone) and the middle at the origin.
    The close the camera is your head, the more realistic the movement looks. I think that if you want to priorize the view that camera can see, you should put the trackir stuff as close to the camera as possible. That way the rig movement is corrected for the camera view.
    And I think you should enable tracking all dimensions and just keep adjusting the mapping until it looks good.

  • @SergejGrabun
    @SergejGrabun 3 роки тому +1

    The right side camera looks best to me. I'd say more of it should be on screen (nothing wrong with how you look Will :D).
    I still think your brake pedal setup is too hard for you. You'll never be consistent with braking PCup in corners when you need so much force from whole body to press it.

      @boostedmedia  3 роки тому

      Doesn’t seem to work well like that for motion. As I’m physically moving relative to the screen no additional movement is necessary to add that element. Plus it looks weird on camera to have the cars cabin moving differently to me in the cabin.

      The hydro pedals ceased again so we had to switch back to the ultimates for now while we wait for a solution from Racewerk. Once we have it figured out I’ll do a follow up video.

    huh, so 2020 wasn't a complete bust. real nice content about a real nice rig. while on the rally cross course, would have liked to see more of the main camera angle through the corners as that is where TrackIR really shines. but the camera kept cutting away to the left side angle view. anyways, hope you and yours have a happy new year, and am looking forward to seeing more from down under.

      Yep. Don’t worry. We’ll be using the other camera primarily for any proper driving content.

    The end result looks a lot better., the only thing I think would be better is the GoPro on top of head or hat peak than to one side ,

    • @boostedmedia
      @boostedmedia  3 роки тому +1

      We experimented with that but it was too high up snd ruined the immersion. Will keep trying to optimise the GoPro angle though. :)

    I just say it looks like it's reacting slower to the input of the steering wheel. Like a few milliseconds off. Like you turn in wait then the body turns in. So when you drift if looks little off but also seems off for apexing

    This is really interesting. I love my Pimax and I just got my motion compensation setup properly on my new SFX-100. It's a phenomenal experience and I'm having a great time but I use TrackIR for a lot of games that don't have VR and I love it for years. I even use it in FPS games for lean left/right! I do sometimes have friends over and we all have sim'd for years and as great as VR is - it can be a bit of a pain and it totally takes you out of the room. I was wondering if there was a motion compensation possible on flat panel using TrackIR & here it is!
    I've only used TrackIR with a single superwide before I got the motion platform, but found it really nicely bridged the gap for mechanical advantage and even a little depth perception; obviously you aren't getting visuals in stereo but you can still peer around A pillars, etc. Track IR hands you back some of that physicality in the game world, without cutting you off from the real one.
    I do feel like it probably gives much bigger gains on a single panel than triples?

    Looks pretty good. Although frankly I think the camera looked like a more realistic "on-board" with the flimsier mount. No on-board cam is as stable as this one is. Not sure if that's better or worse (maybe it gets annoying af after a while) but to me it was more realistic. Rest looks pretty good.

    looks 99.9% right.... But I was expecting you to come back to a "flat" line at 1 for Yaw, X and Y.... maybe there is a 'multiplier' in the fact that the TrackClipPro is positioned a distance behind Will's eyes ??

    Hey Will, I'm not sure if you can look at this video and edit the movement of the screen to line up exactly with the cockpit so it actually looks like your dash isnt moving at all. Basically your note at 23:50. You may be able to fix that with like 2 camera views, maybe one behind you? Or a gopro like Davecam does sometimes? not sure

      Looks like your shoulder cam later in the video was doing it for me, and honestly the porsche looked way better to me than the rally car

    • @boostedmedia

      Yeah I think there’s always going to be a bit of mismatch, but it’s o oh really noticeable with the side view camera, which in normal videos won’t be used much when the car is in motion anyway. Most of our racing content will be done with a fixed over shoulder view or POV head mounted like in this video.

    31:00 The final result looks nice! I think you should work a bit on the lighting of your setup. From this video it seems that the lights you need to have nice exposure of your face cause reflections from the screen causing the screens to have washed out look. Perhaps try having the lights from the direction of the screens more so that you have less light falloff towards the screens?
    I'd like to watch more that gopro view, perhaps with software stabilization to make the final video look less bouncy but still have at least some of the movement in the final video.

    I think the correct approach to tnuning this would be to turn the motion platform off and moving it manually to the extremes, setting the value in the curve and then adding some points in between. After that you can do the dynamic test for setting the dampening and speed factors

    I prefer the gopro view much over the side one bc you can actually see where you’re going. Maybe consider installing a wider angle objective on the side cam or even a wider format. Most of the smartphones today have a wider frame than 16:9 anyway.

    You can more easily spot the imperfections of the calibration after mounting the camera onto the rig. Before that, things looked pretty flush to my eyes

    if there was a way to "hide" the frames of the screens, this would probably be the best setup ever! I mean, probably is already, but that would make it GOD TIER xD

    hey Will, amazing video here. Looks like you have might some flex on the pole that holds the track IR. Have you considered mounting it on a extrusion connected to the back of the frame of the P1x? that way you will be truly compensating for the x and k axis. In this case the trackir is moving also in the x and k axis when the seat [nlr platform ]is moving.

    • @boostedmedia
      @boostedmedia  3 роки тому

      Yep we will definitely that pole with something more sturdy now we know the proof of concept works.

    Did you adjust the height of the screens once your rig was raised? If not -- do you think the new screen height is better or worse for your personal immersion? I'm thinking that you have wasted screen real estate for the front screen since the bottom of the screen is blocked by wheel and wheel mount etc, (but the side screens aren't affected as much). I'm wondering if losing screen at the top of your vision is worse in this case.

    • @boostedmedia
      @boostedmedia  3 роки тому

      We set the screens up originally at the height we thought we would want one traction was added and I’m happy with it. It gives a great sense of sitting in the car, especially with open wheelers.

    Waiting on g923 through best buy. got it for price of g29 so...yeah my last wheel was a serial "game port" wheel from the 90's with no feedback. hope to build up to similar to what ya got and pass along the g923.
