Craig is, in my mind, the best Bond of all-time. His portrayal of a vulnerable, tortured, mess of a person who is bound by honor, yet is striving for a time where he can find the missing piece of himself, and live in peace somewhere. It’s absolutely brilliant, and comes closest to what the book version by Ian Fleming wanted to portray.

Daniel Craig's iteration of Bond is the only one which showed James Bond's development as a human being and a character. From the brash, raw recruit in Casino Royale who was vulnerable and emotional and fell in love with Vesper and was hell bent on revenge through QoS, learning to leave his emotions behind, until they were stoked in through M's murder in Skyfall, was such a progression in character development. The people who couldn't take a 'crying James Bond' in Casino Royale just didn't understand that with Daniel Craig it wasn't carrying on where Pierce Brosnan left off. It was re-creating and building the character for a new generation, stripping away the flaws, the weaknesses, adding the charm, the humour, the arrogance and coldness, movie by movie, to ultimately become the typical Bond of yesteryear.

Good point, I think Daniel Craig’s bond was the closest thing to what Ian Fleming wrote about in his books. Constant internal conflict with his emotions and carrying out cold acts for his work showed really well in this iteration of James Bond. The cold and almost lifeless at times character showed love and emotion and had to deal with losing that. All the previous bonds kind of felt like he was an untouchable badass always saving the world.

    • @epiphany55
      @epiphany55 2 роки тому +8

@@NB-xh3ic Right. For me it made me root for him as a character more genuinely because we were given those glimpses into his emotional turmoil. Even giving significant screen time to his alcohol dependency in a more sombre light was enough to relate to him more honestly than any of the previous Bonds.

One of the most memorable scenes for me was in Skyfall, with Daniel and Judi…
_Bond, standing in front of the DB5, staring into the foggy valley and the highlands beyond of Scotland. M gets out of the car, adjusts her coat, and walks over to him._
M: Is this where you grew up?
    Bond (looking ahead): Mmm.
M: How old were you when they died?
Bond (softly): You know the answer to that. You know the whole story.
    _long pause_
M: Orphans always make the best recruits.
Bond (smiles slightly, turns to M): Storm’s coming.
Bond’s human side was rarely more displayed than during the Daniel Craig era. I hope this last outing befits his legacy.

It seemed to me that the Bond character was rather "cartoonish" even though as appealing as it may be, I think that Craig's great achievement was providing depth and humanity to the character and showing the audience that Bond is not a superhero who never gets hurt (both physically and emotionally), instead we've got a man who does the best he can with what he's got which is pretty much what most people do everyday regardless of betrayal, heartache and/or pain. Things that we all can relate to.

    • @ADAPTATION7

The pinnacle of cartoonish actually was during the Roger Moore era who never took himself too seriously in his role as James Bond. Let's not pretend they did something really special. They ripped off another franchise and made Bond a generic action hero. No gadgets, no larger than life villains, a super serious Bond. His Bond was no different from any other action hero like Liam Neeson in Taken for example. Just a guy running around with machineguns.

A LONG time ago they should have written a script where they brought back some of the former Bonds out of "retirement" to work with whomever the current Bond was and did a film where they were all chasing down several different "villains". They could have just said they were former agents and given them different numbers or if Bond number 7 is just handed down from a previous agent, they could have all been 007's. A good script and it could have made billions.

What I adore about the Craig films is the fact that not only was he as tough as nails but with that, he was also really vulnerable. The betrayal he felt in Casino Royale when Eva Greene seemingly betrayed him but his face when M points out that she sold out to save his life. Plus clearly having the brain power to make lightening fast decisions. He has much more dimension than the earlier Bonds. Casino Royale is the best showing how he got started and that Parkour segment … amazing. But also Skyfall which traces his roots, gets the Aston Martin out of mothballs, includes Albert Finley in his last role as the trusty family retainer and Judi Dench’s death as M followed by Bond’s obvious upset as a result. … you can’t fault this! This interview was a really nice view of Craig’s take on his epoch as Bond.

I think his gritty Bond completed the dimensions we have seen through the years of actors. Craig is the zenith of Bond, so to speak. I used to believe that Brosnan was the best until I realised that he too had added a significant dimension to the character, and with Rose tinted glasses, he still is a crucial figure in the 007 enterprise. With all the facets of Bond now complete in my view, the only thing I believe we can expect to see from a new Bond, is actually a new character - a new type of Bond.

Just saw Casino Royale in the theater again last night. Brought back memories of watching the movie on release day back in 2006 in an almost empty theater. I remember how much flak Craig got post his selection as the next Bond; all major tabloids ran stories on how this was a terrible choice and a mistake (blond bond?), actresses refused to work in the film, etc. But I had faith in Daniel Craig, and when that iconic gunbarrel shot hit of him shooting one of his two kills to become a “double O” followed by You Know My Name (still my favorite Bond song), I was transfixed that day in the theater. It’s one of my favorite movies of all time and I have seen it countless times, including last night (again, in an almost empty theater).

The amazing chase scenes he performed along with the talented professional climber, the insights into his childhood and relationship with M , the technology and gadgets and revamped classic bond car from previous Bond movies , the new Q and great female leads along side Bond all raised the Bar Higher than ever before. Plus the actors they chose to play the villains could hold their own and deliver a strong performance with a few surprises for the audience. Craig’s Bond showed the cocky , confident spy we all enjoy but also the vulnerable , traumatized spy. If they never made another Bond movie again , I wouldn’t be too disappointed. Maybe it’s time to explore other , diverse storylines now.

There is an argument to be made about who was Fleming’s Bond between Craig, Dalton and Connery for me.
But in terms of a cinematic Bond that encapsulates everything that makes the character great for every generation, Craig has made it his own.
Will miss him in the role very much, but on another hand, I’m happy to see him bow out now, and not get into the Roger Moore trap of doing a Bond film at too old an age.
That didn’t work once, it shouldn’t work again.

I like Moore's & Brosnan's Bond most of all & will continue to rewatch it. But I believe that's because the scenario is better & cinematography technology is matured enough.
That being said, I believe the true Bond is still Connery. That's because the actor is most believe able, because irl the actor can defeat all other Bond.
At any age for both the competitor. Meaning when Connery & (for example) Moore at the same age.
I believe Craig is good but he can't shine because the scenario. That's understandable because all the good one is already made.
