  • Hi, in this video, I'll try to repair a Citizen Challenge Timer a.k.a. Bullhead or Tsuno Chrono in Japan. I have wanted to restore a mechanical chronograph. The time has come.
    This is indeed one of the best-looking vintage wristwatches. This watch became famous as Brad Pitt wore it in the movie "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood". I'm not a big fan of gold watches, but this watch is exceptional, should be gold. I like the vintage look. I didn't polish the case and didn't change any original parts.
    The movement was non-working, dirty, and needed cleaning and small repairs. I managed to fully disassemble, clean, lubricate, and re-assemble. However, this still has some chronograph problems. I'll do it all over and try to make this better later soon. I appreciate your comments and advice on chronograph problems.
    This is a kind of "part1" of the video series. I'll post another video of this watch in the future. If you liked this video, like, comment, and subscribe to my channel!

    These little bullheads are fantastic watches, I have one with a silver case and original silver dial and I wear it on an orange waffle. The day quick change struggles to work, I'll deal with that when I service the watch, I think this video will be useful to me then, so thanks for posting!

    I've become a bit of a citizen 8110a fanatic-i have 4 bullheads and 2 monacos (all of which require some restoration work). I just dig these particular movements, and the styling on them ain't too bad.

    A broken watch is still accurate to the second, as it will tell the correct time once every day! So yes, take care of those busted old time-pieces!

      I'm struggling yet. I did it over and over and over again last month. I recently found an informative tweet in Japanese and a potential issue on the small part of my watch. I ordered a replacement and waiting for it!

    Hello, great video I saw it only now because I just overhauled one (I'm a hobbyist). The watch was non-functional and now after repair everything is working except the reset/Flyback of the chronograph. The button can be pressed and you can also hear the sound of the column wheel snapping a tooth, but the chronograph seconds hand stop for as long as I hold down and then start again from the same position without resetting. Do you have an idea of how to try to solve this issue? THX

    • @vintagewatchtinkerer
      @vintagewatchtinkerer  8 місяців тому

      It sounds like an uncommon problem. The reset hammer resets both the second recording hand and the minute recording hand. If the reset/flyback of the minute recording hand doesn't have any problem, the reset/flyback mechanism itself will be okay. The heart cam of the seconds wheel might have a problem.

      Sorry, actually it is not a good winder so I don't recommend it that is a Chinese $100 one. I am looking for another. Meanwhile I buy a replacement spring or just rewind by hand.

      They are bead containers. I bought at a local handcraft shop near my home.

    It's easier to remove the pallet fork and that way you don't damage anything when trying to unwind. Or maybe I'm just lazy :D

    I have one citizen bull head steel bodied chronograph. The time with day and date is running but the other two horns is not functioning. The original crown is missing. Probably it needs overhauling. What to do? How it costs? Please advice.

      The cost of overhauling will vary depending on your watch condition. My one is fortunately all parts are still functioning so it runs again after cleaning and lubricating. If some parts were missing or broken, it would cost more. The parts are difficult to find since this is an almost 50-year-old watch. Even if we can find one, every single part will cost tens of dollars. The best of luck to you.

      If the parts are rusted, they will be difficult to repair. In that case, we need to buy replacement parts and sometimes it can be expensive. Wishes you can repair your one.

    'Panning' for dust and rust at one point... excellent recording. Those Citizen watches are extraordinarily complex.

    Congrats for the video. Recently bought one of these magnificent pieces, which needs to be serviced due to a one pusher malfunction and a very damaged crystal. In my previous research, before buying it, I didn’t learn of an issue that really worries me: the possibility that this model is radioactive because of the use of promethium in the dial.
    Before posting this, I’ve read articles, forums and papers about this matter. Apparently, the models that may contain the radioactive substance are those with the designation ‘P JAPAN P 8110’ on the dial; and the watches with de designation ‘JAPAN 8110’ would be free of this material. But I havent’t been able to confirm it by any source. My watch is into the last category (‘JAPAN 8110’).
    Please, could you help me? I need to know if this information is correct. If it is, I will keep and service my fantastic watch. if it is radioactive, I will get rid of it as soon as possible.
    Could you help me? Thanks!

      In fact, Citizen had used promethium until 1998, I think it may contain.

    I have the same exact watch I inherited from my father. he passed away last October. I am looking for a traditional watch repair specialist who might take an interest in repairing my father's watch. I already tried Citizen and what they charge to service this timepiece is prohibitely exorbitant. More, much more than what this watch is worth. do you know of anyone who can service this watch? or do you take customers?

    • @vintagewatchtinkerer
      @vintagewatchtinkerer  7 місяців тому

      sorry. I don't know, and it's just my hobby, so I don't take customers. Yours is definitely worth much more than mine. I hope you can find a genuine watch maker to repair your heritage.

    To fix the chronograph hand reset location, pull the crown out then press the upper right button (maybe upper left but I think right) many times and the chronograph hand will move one minute with each click. Once you get it back to 12, push the crown down. That's how you reset it back to zero.

      @@vintagewatchtinkerer That's because that proceure is for quartz chronographs. The sweep hand on this 8110 has a D profile, so align the hand with this profile or else the hand tube will crack.
