  • Tesla's new Model S looks much the same as before, but with 370 miles of real-world range and an entirely new suspension, this thing might as well be a new car. Read the full review - roadshow.co/cDQ8mV

    The hallmark feature of the new 2019 Tesla Model S Long Range is, of course, its range. 370 miles puts it well ahead of the competition, going nearly twice as far as some of the new crop of luxo-EVs from Audi and Mercedes-Benz and the like. I won't get into the debate of how much range people actually need, because that's a complicated one, but suffice to say that 370 miles is enough to banish range fears from the minds of even the most anxious of drivers.
    The truly fascinating thing is that 370 miles -- 35 more than before -- is delivered by exactly the same 100 kilowatt-hour battery pack. Where'd Tesla find that extra range, then? It required a series of tweaks, some subtle, some more substantial.

    Is the infotainment system good enough, or does it need improvement?

      Apple CarPlay would be nice. But after 8 months without it, you grow to like the integrated functionality without the added phone integration. That being said, I would still like apps such as Waze up on the big screen somehow.

    • @DroppinDaMike

      I am a fan of Tesla (and particularly of Model S) precisely because of the infotainment system in Model S.
      I can support you in the fact that infotainment needs some improvements, but it depends on what does improvements need to bring:
      - the speed and smoothness ? Absolutely - with the most recent MCU they did a lot of work, but I am still not satisfied with smoothness. Then again, I would have to see the most recent MCU in real world, and not rely on videos and opinions of others;
      - functionality ? Not so much. The big screen already covers the most of the car's functionality, that is usually handled by countless of buttons;
      - you said that big screen is from 2012, and needs some refresh - I agree partially, there were some concern about yellow tint, but I am not sure how widely spread it is; otherwise I would stay away from high refresh rate displays and so on - Tesla should focus on functionality, and let bells and whistles to other automakers;
      - what I would welcome, is a 2nd display just for the passenger in the front, either vertical (so basically that iPad mirrored), or horizontal (like the cluster in front of the driver);

      Think TIMELESS. Now public accepts EVs maybe an aerodynamic tweet or 2. Basic reason why ICE automakers change is so they and their customers can best the Joneses. And otherwise how could you tell which was more recent/ better? As in this also Tesla has been a disruptor! Progressive improvement. Hence all the interest in year and even month of manufacture. So the outside is generally great, continuous improvement in mechanics and electrics is the go, and every so often an improvement in creature comforts. So very 2-4 weeks there’s something better. You buy it as it is then, with OTA updates. You buy it and accept that with anticipation and pleasure, or look elsewhere and buy a “horse”.

    Sorry but Tesla is already years ahead of its competition. They already update what's important in their cars over the air unlike every other car manufacturer out there. It doesn't need a refresh every 2 years because people do not need a new car every 2 years.
    Also, reviews should not be based on personal opinions about design. As they say, beauty is indeed in the eye of the beholder. You might be used to seeing a new car every couple of days, but most of us aren't. Just because the Germans refresh their cars by adding extra trim every couple of years, that doesn't mean that it's the right thing to do.

  • @doubleclutchonline5811

    Thank god Tesla doesn't follow other automakers and modify their designs every four years. I'm over all the fake go-fast plastic on Audis and BMWs. Or the New Jersey Nightclub style of MB interiors. I will agree that this particular woodgrain shown is not great. Piano black or lighter woodgrain is much better. Tesla design is timeless and the car itself is lightyears beyond what any other automaker is doing right now.

    • @sergioserramusic
      @sergioserramusic 5 років тому +1

      Rudolph Xu I like Teslas, but they come together slowly and not perfectly. The model 3 has had a ton of issues with panels alignment, imperfections in the paint and the repair costs and waiting time for simple incidents (like a fender bender) are way beyond comprehension.
      The thing that separates Teslas by other manufacturers is that they do stuff that comes together nicely and lasts. Think about old and new Volvos: the design has always been great but with durability; same with BMW and Audis (Merc is way too plasticky lately).
      I think that in the next years we will see much more competition from the well established brands when they come out with their full electric cars.

    It's amazing this late in 2019 still to see so many latest 2019 and 2020 Model S videos in UA-cam. It's not because these reviewers/owners are late to the game, but to note that this Tesla Model S is still an awesome car that attracts so many views and that people are still buying and sharing their experiences, including your review Mr. "R" So... it is not dated! Just as many comments in here, if it ain't broken, don't fix it. Model S is still by far the best looking car anywhere you are on the road, stop lights, parking lot. If you own and drive a Model S, you still do get heads turn and people coming closer to look at it. The exterior of the Model S is as handsome, modern yet clean design; the interior still is minimalist yet comes with full function. Who needs those extra pockets, cup holders and, file cabinets in a car? The infotainment, it can display miles of streets and highways around you on the map with that 17" screen, name one 'competitor' who can actually do that? Lastly, the range, in any of the Model S is far greater than others. With the latest numbers of Tesla Superchargers, that anxiety is pretty much far forgotten. I have a white Model S just like the tester in this video, and am proud to be its owner. I often find excuses just to go out to the garage to take another peek at it, it never once let me down.

    quote: "But in a segment that prioritizes freshness, visually, the Model S is anything but."
    Have you *looked* at those other refreshed cars competing in this segment? Most of them are from ultra-stodgy German companies, and they have all the style and character of a cinder block.
    quote: "This touch screen that was once hyper-futuristic back in 2012? Well, now it's starting to look a little bit dated."
    Oh?? Dated compared to what, I wonder? Is somebody else shipping cars now with a bigger screen? Let me know, because I haven't seen that.

    This car is beautiful. Its not a dated design. it still looks like it was released today. No other manufacturer has such a beautiful design philosophy. Teslas simply look beautiful. They are well proportioned and have subtle character lines to distinguish themselves by looking unique. Only the Germans do such design (by keeping it simple but timeless for instance the VW and Audi cars). Tesla as a brand have imbibed the best qualities of the European auto industry, Asian Industry and Silicon Valley. Their total vertical integration is similar to Toyota. Their design philosophy is similar to German VW group and their constant iterative updates is a trait of them being a computer on wheels. This is an aspirational car for many. Truly revolutionary product.

    It's an ignorant reviewer who confuses styling with design. It's the same kind of ignorance that believes upgrading a radio that's integrated with an ECM and a tablet is an advacement in automotive technology.

    The Model S launched as rear wheel drive, they then released dual motor version, then a 90 kWh pack upgrade, then new self driving technology developed by themselves and a 100 kWh battery, then a self driving chip developed by them instead of nVidia and now a new motor, inverter and cooling upgrades for both the battery pack and the motors. From how you describe it an outsider would think they barely touched the car in the meantime and I didn't even mention the endless software updates and minor tweaks.

    Doesn’t continually changing and updating an interior and exterior with new plastic moulded parts and trashing the old ones go against the entire eco friendly movement with Tesla? The car interior and exterior should stay the same and utopian so the design and mould costs go to zero over time due to amortization and become fully recyclable. If the eco friendly model means anything we should forget about needing new fake looks every year.

    Chasing perfection is always a driving force for man. I understand the updates the presenter pointed out for the Tesla Model S. This is my thoughts on the car based on my experience as an owner.
    I purchased a 2017 Tesla Model S 60D (218 mile range) in January 2017 which included unlimited free supercharging. Options purchased were dual motor AWD, air suspension, metal roof, upgraded seats, white paint. Several months later I paid $2,000 discounted price for software to unlock battery pack to full 75kWh (259 mile range) and uncorked 0-60mph acceleration from 5.4 to 4.5 seconds. I have driven over 48,000 miles with my biggest expense being replacing the Goodyear tires with Michelin tires a couple of months ago. I love this car, it’s the best I’ve ever owned in 47 years of driving.
    Now I look at the 2020 Tesla Model S Long Range Plus. It’s dual motor AWD with a 100kWh (391 mile range with 0-60mph acceleration in 3.7 seconds) and all of the options I paid for in my car included in the price. Also included are HEPA filtration and the cold weather package (no metal roof option).
    Now for the most impressive statistic of all, the price. The price including tax and license for the 2020 Tesla Model S Long Range Plus is only about $1,000 more then what I paid for my 2017 Tesla S 75D (Note: I did get the $7,500 tax credit for my 2017 which is no longer available). For that you get better range, better acceleration, more options then a similar car just three years earlier.
    Personally, I think Tesla has made a good choice in keeping the body style for a few more years while they introduce new EV models to ween the public off of ICE cars. Money well spent!

The exterior of the model S after the facelift in my opinion looks better than a mclaren or lambo. The futuristic styling in the headlights for example is beautiful. And if you move to the interior it gets better. A 17” touchscreen that is as good as an iPad? Who the hell can say that is dated? Not a single car manufacturer after the 7 years this car has been out has managed to make a screen even close. Case closed

    I think this car needs a new interior (horizontally oriented screen would be really nice, because it offers a better layout for content and all that stuff), new rear lights (because current ones simply don't match the front end and those single LEDs there just look cheap), new tech (heads-up display is a must-have IMO - try it once and you will never want a car without it; and 360 cameras system - maybe not as fancy as new BMWs have but at least cheap yet useful Infinity kinda thing), leave the front end untouched and please leave an option for carbon fiber interior elements for non-performance models - and there you have it - a perfect car
