I got into Godzilla last year and was upset at how expensive this game was. I knew it wasn't received very well, but it still looked like fun even if it wasn't as good as the Pipeworks trilogy. I posted my disappointment about the pricing to Twitter where one of my friends saw it and was shocked cause he still had a sealed copy. However, instead of selling it for that nice cash, he sent it to me as a surprise gift. I was legit at a loss for words when I opened the package.
Despite being a huge Hansei Era fan, my four year old daughter and I played this when we were all sick with COVID-19. It was a challenging albeit special time especially with this game. Just recently I got the platinum award which was a lot of wasted time! SOOOOOO……. I just bought a sealed copy, still with the PS4 protection proof strip, for $400. I invest in other commodities but one of the rules in proper investing is to do so in something you know and you love. That way even if the asset does not go up you still enjoy it. This game has all of the attributes of a “true“ collectible and “true“ scarcity.

Fun fact: Apparently the North American copy of the PS4 game is not only super rare, but it’s the rarest physical PS4 game. I learned this after I got my sealed copy for like 15 bucks 3 years ago.
I can’t even joke about Balan Wonderworld at this point. It just makes me sad and mad at the same time. Yeah, it’s a game for kids but the concept, while not entirely original, was interesting. But while the ideas were paved with good intentions, the execution has been seen as disastrous ever since the demo. Only the pre-patch release had something no one expected.
Picked this game up for $20 in 2015 and loved it. It was a great little arcadey game with lots to unlock and tons of fun kaiju to play. And then I found out it was sold for $80 on release. Spending $20 was the right price for the game, $300 is insane.
Natsume isn't the "original company: behind Harvest Moon. They only gave it the name and localized them. Marvelous are the actual company. The last game Natsume published that was a real Harvest Moon game was A New Beginning on 3DS after that Natsume stole the name and have kept making fake HM games. The series is actually called Story of Seasons now.
This was the game that ultimately made me decide to make the switch from xbox 360 to ps4, there were other factors of course. When I played this game when it came out in the states I actually loved playing the game despite all its flaws. Thankfully I still have my physical copy and I'm really glad the developers actually made it out ok despite its overseas failure. Great episode on the game

I happen to be one of the few people that like this game, but I always enjoy watching these anyway because of their educational value. Hearing what goes on behind the scenes of good janky games often explains things aren't always cut and dry in development. Keep up the good work, Matt !
Fantastic video. Thanks for further feeding my current kaiju fever. I was shocked to find the active online player base a few years ago. Doubt I’ll ever get the platinum trophy, but it was cool to unlock those few multiplayer trophies in an hour or two anyway.
Seriously need a current Gen quality Godzilla game Series. Whether it's Pipeworks remaking their Trilogy with Bandai, or somebody new who's passionate about the franchise and deliver something special. There's so much potential for Godzilla games.

Great video overall, though I hate to be that guy but I have a correction on the mention of Natsume. They were only the publishers of the Bokujo Monogatari (Harvest Moon now Story of Seasons) games, Victor Interactive Software (they're owned by Marvelous now) developed the series. It's pretty easy to make the mistake though because after Marvelous decided they wanted to publish the series in house Natsume retained the series' name rights so they've been developing their own Harvest Moon games with the name.
First off I gotta say I love the Super Godzilla themes playing in the background. But also I actually like this game. Picked it up used at my local gamestop for like $15. Imagine my surprise 2 years later finding out its going for hundreds

But yeah, I don't think the either the game or the movie is suited for WH. Both are considered successes, as far as I know, didn't really have any developmental problems. And while being on 10 different formats, Ubisoft did the logical thing (unlike Cyberpunk or Mighty Number 9) where they had different studios split up, and handle each version, Glad you like the video though!

The misinformed information comes from a user [whom I'm not going to name] that claims DLC was promised by Shunsuke Fujita during one of this games showcase. Fujita never stated any promised but simply avoided the question without saying that there will be any. This member is still spreading the idea that DLC was promised and was simply abandoned because of poor sales. In reality this Godzilla came is part of what is called the "Bandai budget title" which are simply games created with a small budget and made for a quick profit. Something I was glad you mentioned in your video. Bandai was never going to add any extra budget for DLC content for these type of budget game titles. If you want a good example of a Bandai Budget title, look at the Kamen Rider Climax Heroes games where they often reuse the same asset and charge full price for there release. These games are often programmed by newly hired graduates who are trying to get into the video game industry. Another thing that these Bandai Budget titles are also known for is their on disc DLC practice which if you own some of them [I am a collector of Tokusatsu games], you can clearly see them in their folder archive on the disc.
It really blows my mind the little, and I mean tiny fuckin me really went out at like 6 or 7 and watched every single kaiju movie you could think of. I’ll go through all the monster list and actually get excited when I see one I don’t recognize

Correction to your Natsume note: Natsume only localized Bokujou Monogatari as Harvest Moon in English, the company behind it is Marvellous. However, after some legal stuff, Natsume lost the rights to translate Bokujou Monogatari but they somehow kept the rights to the English name. So they only started making Harvest Moon games in the early 2010s, whereas Bokujou Monogatari would continue to release as Story of Seasons.

My friends gave me so much shot for being into this game. But I knew it was a game made for fans and it definitely managed to capture my childhood imagination. Very underrated game imho. Despite being a tad repetitive the unlocks are really cool. Getting his atomic breath that blasted him backwards put a goofy smile on my face
I honestly really feel bad for this game and after watching this, it made me love the game even more and I loved it already, seeing how much love and care and respect the developers had for Godzilla and kaiju. Trying to recreate the destruction sequences and making you feel like your a kaiju, you can tell this was made as a love letter to kaiju fans everywhere. I think people were way too hard on this game, and bashed on it too much and back then bashed on the people who love this game. While it may not be perfect, it sure as hell is not as bad as everyone made it out to be, I have been a fan of Godzilla way before the monsterverse even started which is a good few years before the release of Godzilla 2014 in the States, and when I picked this game up for my birthday during its release period, I fell in love with it. Feeling like I'm a Kaiju and causing destruction reminded me of my childhood, waking up in the morning to watch the Godzilla movies I owned and playing with my Godzilla figures that I still own to this day, this is like the game version of Kotm, it was meant for a selected audience as a Love Letter from Bandai, is it perfect? Of course not, the multiplayer could have been better with options so that beginners can fight other beginners and Advanced players can battle each other so its more fair than unfair, dying so many times to people with more abilities than you can be infuriating and take the joy out of Multiplayer, maybe some more levels and a little more kaiju would be nice. This is a game I play when I'm in a kaiju mood for a good 2hrs to 2 and a half hours and it breaks my heart seeing how much negativity this game got from people for what it was trying to be, a fun Godzilla game for hardcore fans of the classic Godzilla movies with great special effects to recapture the destruction seen in the films, not everyone likes this game and that's completely ok since everyone has different tastes in games, movies, music, etc. I just think that if mainstream audiences saw this game and realized that this game is meant for People who love Godzilla and giant monsters, I think they would have a change of heart towards it and be more understanding to it. I really appreciate what the Developers were able to do and the love they had for Godzilla really shows here.

It really just depends on the person, if your a huge hardcore or longtime fan that grew up on classic old school kaiju movies, yeah I can recommend it, but mainstream gamers and non kaiju fans? As a huge Godzilla fan I LOVE this game, it has so much kaiju content and it lets you feel like you're in a Godzilla movie It is a bit lacking in gameplay content and can be a bit janky at times, but man is it a great love letter to Big G and fans

I get the criticisms for this game and it certainly had it's issues but one thing it did better than any of the pipeworks games is making you actually feel like a giant monster in one of the movies. Don't get me wrong, I love the pipeworks games, but they're essentially like a Godzilla version of Smash Bros. Using the bumpers to turn may feel clunky to some, but I felt it gave the monsters a sense of weight not being able to turn on a dime. The destruction was also much better as buildings were way easier to destroy and the animations for attacks were much more movie accurate. What I'd like is a game that combines the best aspects of both the ps4 version and the pipeworks trilogy. Something with the destruction and sense of weight from the ps4 game with many of the combat feature from the pipeworks games such as a guard and grab for every monster and expanded move sets. Oh and no more generators please.
I would love to see you tackle Colossal Kaiju Combat one of these days. So often I come across fans mistakingly believing that the game was “ruined” because certain characters originally came from the furry community. Not sure how that affects game development. From what I remember, the game’s lead developer, Simon Strange, tried to create a $300,000 budget game with only $100,000 by having his whole team work for free while he spent the money on game assets and merchandise like trading cards and cheap figurines. Once the development team was unavailable (or died like in one unfortunate case) he had already ran out of money at that point to hire a new team and continue the project. Strangely, he never officially cancelled CKC despite it being 5 years since it went on “hiatus.” Most of this information came from the now defunct CKC forums. You could interview Simon himself, but I’m certain all you’ll get are excuses from the man. In any case, I’d be interested in hearing your thoughts on the whole debacle. Until then, keep up the great work!

I just checked out Wha Happun? I wanted to say that I’m loving this series Matt. Such an awesome series about the backstory of disasters in gaming. To show my appreciation: I want to nominate Persona 5 Dancing Star Night for PS4 on Wha Happun? Known as the bottom of barrel for Persona, the game was made as a cheap cash in just to market on Persona 5’s success. Bundled with bad marketing, poor sales, and false advertising make this embarrassing dancing game a spot on Wha Happun?
I love this game. I really do. As a life long fan of Godzilla, it just makes me happy whenever I play it. I can feel the love poured into the game by the devs. Especially with the monster intro cutscenes. Like Jet Jaguar’s. Oh my god that one and the handshake scene where he’s with Godzilla. Yes there are plenty of issues. Like the human dialogue that isn’t from the soldiers fighting you gets incredibly annoying and the goals being the same every mission feels like finding the generators in Super Godzilla. But despite those issues I adore the game just as much as the Pipeworks games and the WayForward GBA game. If not slightly more since I’m crazy apparently for really loving this game.
Funny story: my dad and I got this game for $5 from the Target bargain bin. We ended up selling it for $100+ because the game's now a collector's item due to it being out of print.

But while the ideas were paved with good intentions, the execution has been seen as disastrous ever since the demo. Only the pre-patch release had something no one expected.

Picked this game up for $20 in 2015 and loved it. It was a great little arcadey game with lots to unlock and tons of fun kaiju to play. And then I found out it was sold for $80 on release. Spending $20 was the right price for the game, $300 is insane.
Natsume isn't the "original company: behind Harvest Moon. They only gave it the name and localized them. Marvelous are the actual company. The last game Natsume published that was a real Harvest Moon game was A New Beginning on 3DS after that Natsume stole the name and have kept making fake HM games. The series is actually called Story of Seasons now.

This was the game that ultimately made me decide to make the switch from xbox 360 to ps4, there were other factors of course. When I played this game when it came out in the states I actually loved playing the game despite all its flaws. Thankfully I still have my physical copy and I'm really glad the developers actually made it out ok despite its overseas failure. Great episode on the game

Fantastic video. Thanks for further feeding my current kaiju fever. I was shocked to find the active online player base a few years ago. Doubt I’ll ever get the platinum trophy, but it was cool to unlock those few multiplayer trophies in an hour or two anyway.
Seriously need a current Gen quality Godzilla game Series. Whether it's Pipeworks remaking their Trilogy with Bandai, or somebody new who's passionate about the franchise and deliver something special.
There's so much potential for Godzilla games.

Godzilla DLC just came out in Gigabash and I’ve been loving it so far. Feels great to play with them after having loved the pipeworks games as a kid.
The worst part is that I really want to play this game , but it's been pulled from everywhere.

Great video overall, though I hate to be that guy but I have a correction on the mention of Natsume. They were only the publishers of the Bokujo Monogatari (Harvest Moon now Story of Seasons) games, Victor Interactive Software (they're owned by Marvelous now) developed the series. It's pretty easy to make the mistake though because after Marvelous decided they wanted to publish the series in house Natsume retained the series' name rights so they've been developing their own Harvest Moon games with the name.
First off I gotta say I love the Super Godzilla themes playing in the background. But also I actually like this game. Picked it up used at my local gamestop for like $15. Imagine my surprise 2 years later finding out its going for hundreds

But yeah, I don't think the either the game or the movie is suited for WH. Both are considered successes, as far as I know, didn't really have any developmental problems. And while being on 10 different formats, Ubisoft did the logical thing (unlike Cyberpunk or Mighty Number 9) where they had different studios split up, and handle each version, Glad you like the video though!

The misinformed information comes from a user [whom I'm not going to name] that claims DLC was promised by Shunsuke Fujita during one of this games showcase. Fujita never stated any promised but simply avoided the question without saying that there will be any. This member is still spreading the idea that DLC was promised and was simply abandoned because of poor sales. In reality this Godzilla came is part of what is called the "Bandai budget title" which are simply games created with a small budget and made for a quick profit. Something I was glad you mentioned in your video. Bandai was never going to add any extra budget for DLC content for these type of budget game titles.
If you want a good example of a Bandai Budget title, look at the Kamen Rider Climax Heroes games where they often reuse the same asset and charge full price for there release. These games are often programmed by newly hired graduates who are trying to get into the video game industry. Another thing that these Bandai Budget titles are also known for is their on disc DLC practice which if you own some of them [I am a collector of Tokusatsu games], you can clearly see them in their folder archive on the disc.
It really blows my mind the little, and I mean tiny fuckin me really went out at like 6 or 7 and watched every single kaiju movie you could think of. I’ll go through all the monster list and actually get excited when I see one I don’t recognize

Correction to your Natsume note: Natsume only localized Bokujou Monogatari as Harvest Moon in English, the company behind it is Marvellous. However, after some legal stuff, Natsume lost the rights to translate Bokujou Monogatari but they somehow kept the rights to the English name. So they only started making Harvest Moon games in the early 2010s, whereas Bokujou Monogatari would continue to release as Story of Seasons.
Might make an interesting what happened? episode actually. Many still don't know that.

My friends gave me so much shot for being into this game. But I knew it was a game made for fans and it definitely managed to capture my childhood imagination. Very underrated game imho. Despite being a tad repetitive the unlocks are really cool. Getting his atomic breath that blasted him backwards put a goofy smile on my face

Fantastic video, I thought I was the only one that appreciated this game for what it was. A love letter to the old films.
I honestly really feel bad for this game and after watching this, it made me love the game even more and I loved it already, seeing how much love and care and respect the developers had for Godzilla and kaiju. Trying to recreate the destruction sequences and making you feel like your a kaiju, you can tell this was made as a love letter to kaiju fans everywhere. I think people were way too hard on this game, and bashed on it too much and back then bashed on the people who love this game. While it may not be perfect, it sure as hell is not as bad as everyone made it out to be, I have been a fan of Godzilla way before the monsterverse even started which is a good few years before the release of Godzilla 2014 in the States, and when I picked this game up for my birthday during its release period, I fell in love with it. Feeling like I'm a Kaiju and causing destruction reminded me of my childhood, waking up in the morning to watch the Godzilla movies I owned and playing with my Godzilla figures that I still own to this day, this is like the game version of Kotm, it was meant for a selected audience as a Love Letter from Bandai, is it perfect? Of course not, the multiplayer could have been better with options so that beginners can fight other beginners and Advanced players can battle each other so its more fair than unfair, dying so many times to people with more abilities than you can be infuriating and take the joy out of Multiplayer, maybe some more levels and a little more kaiju would be nice. This is a game I play when I'm in a kaiju mood for a good 2hrs to 2 and a half hours and it breaks my heart seeing how much negativity this game got from people for what it was trying to be, a fun Godzilla game for hardcore fans of the classic Godzilla movies with great special effects to recapture the destruction seen in the films, not everyone likes this game and that's completely ok since everyone has different tastes in games, movies, music, etc. I just think that if mainstream audiences saw this game and realized that this game is meant for People who love Godzilla and giant monsters, I think they would have a change of heart towards it and be more understanding to it. I really appreciate what the Developers were able to do and the love they had for Godzilla really shows here.

It really just depends on the person, if your a huge hardcore or longtime fan that grew up on classic old school kaiju movies, yeah I can recommend it, but mainstream gamers and non kaiju fans? Definitely not.

Despite being a huge Hansei Era fan, my four year old daughter and I played this when we were all sick with COVID-19. It was a challenging albeit special time especially with this game. Just recently I got the platinum award which was a lot of wasted time! SOOOOOO…….
I just bought a sealed copy, still with the PS4 protection proof strip, for $400. I invest in other commodities but one of the rules in proper investing is to do so in something you know and you love. That way even if the asset does not go up you still enjoy it. This game has all of the attributes of a “true“ collectible and “true“ scarcity.

As a huge Godzilla fan I LOVE this game, it has so much kaiju content and it lets you feel like you're in a Godzilla movie
It is a bit lacking in gameplay content and can be a bit janky at times, but man is it a great love letter to Big G and fans

It captures the destruction of buildings, but it does that for many of the levels. It was a lot of just whatever levels that didn't excite. Its fine if everyone is slow and hits take forever, but the missions didnt make over coming that curve feel good

I get the criticisms for this game and it certainly had it's issues but one thing it did better than any of the pipeworks games is making you actually feel like a giant monster in one of the movies. Don't get me wrong, I love the pipeworks games, but they're essentially like a Godzilla version of Smash Bros. Using the bumpers to turn may feel clunky to some, but I felt it gave the monsters a sense of weight not being able to turn on a dime. The destruction was also much better as buildings were way easier to destroy and the animations for attacks were much more movie accurate. What I'd like is a game that combines the best aspects of both the ps4 version and the pipeworks trilogy. Something with the destruction and sense of weight from the ps4 game with many of the combat feature from the pipeworks games such as a guard and grab for every monster and expanded move sets. Oh and no more generators please.
I would love to see you tackle Colossal Kaiju Combat one of these days. So often I come across fans mistakingly believing that the game was “ruined” because certain characters originally came from the furry community. Not sure how that affects game development. From what I remember, the game’s lead developer, Simon Strange, tried to create a $300,000 budget game with only $100,000 by having his whole team work for free while he spent the money on game assets and merchandise like trading cards and cheap figurines. Once the development team was unavailable (or died like in one unfortunate case) he had already ran out of money at that point to hire a new team and continue the project. Strangely, he never officially cancelled CKC despite it being 5 years since it went on “hiatus.” Most of this information came from the now defunct CKC forums. You could interview Simon himself, but I’m certain all you’ll get are excuses from the man. In any case, I’d be interested in hearing your thoughts on the whole debacle. Until then, keep up the great work!

I love this game. I really do. As a life long fan of Godzilla, it just makes me happy whenever I play it. I can feel the love poured into the game by the devs. Especially with the monster intro cutscenes. Like Jet Jaguar’s. Oh my god that one and the handshake scene where he’s with Godzilla.
Yes there are plenty of issues. Like the human dialogue that isn’t from the soldiers fighting you gets incredibly annoying and the goals being the same every mission feels like finding the generators in Super Godzilla.
But despite those issues I adore the game just as much as the Pipeworks games and the WayForward GBA game. If not slightly more since I’m crazy apparently for really loving this game.
