What a great owner. He loved his teams, his players, football, and his RAIDERS… he lost his player evaluation skills later in his years. But he was in his 60 & 70’s.

I remember seeing this press conference years ago . Al Davis is not someone you wanted to cross . I love Al Davis although late in his career there were some signings draft picks that were less then desirable . Our Raider LB Kirk Morisson had an interesting story about Jamarcus Russell it was on the Rich Eisen podcast .The offence coordinator was getting ready for a game and handed Russell an apparent tape of a few offensive plays and he asked if Russell would take a look at it to see what plays he felt comfortable running , following day coordinator asked Russell if he viewed the tape, Russell said ya I’m good to run all of those plays well it turned out they gave him a blank tape . But Al Davis strived to place a competitive team on the field to his last days .👍🏴‍☠️

You gotta give Lane Kiffin credit for trying to stop AL Davis from drafting Jemarcus Russel who now hold the honor of being the biggest bust in NFL Draft history. That would of save years of heartache. If we did not take Jemarcus #1 in the 2007 draft, the Raiders could of had CALVIN JOHNSON who was taken # 2 by Detroit OR Adrian Peterson who was taken #7 . Imagine that. Al Davis was HORRIFIC in evaluating NFL Draft talent and making picks....especially in the 90s and 2000s.

@@TheWorldRenownedHistorian Belichick is more complex than you think. He understands the modern game (free agency and a hard salary cap), and realizes that in his GM hat, you cannot be sentimental about evaluating players, and projecting what a player is going to do going forward, not based on what they had done in the past. It’s brutal at times, but it was the players who wanted free agency. This, however, doesn’t mean that Belichick has no loyalty toward his players, and former players.
Al is from a very different era, without free agency and a hard salary cap. In that era, you could keep a player for his entire career, and for life. The landscape changed in the NFL in the early 1990’s, and there’s a reason why Belichick was able to adapt to a new way of doing things, and was successful, and I think Al really struggled with that new method of operation, which likely played a role in the decline of the Raiders.

There would be no pioneers like Robert Kraft or Jerry Jones, without Al Davis. He, like Jerry Jones, have done more for the NFL as a brand than anyone. To bad they could never compartmentalize their egos and allow football people to make football decisions. As an Owner you have to admit that the one common denominator in their years of ineptitude is their stubbornness that they are the most qualified to make the team better.

Al Davis was the reason the Raiders sucked. Same for Dallas Cowboys, Jerry Jones needs to get a GM that has good experience and same for a head coach and let them do their jobs and stay out of it. Same thing for my favorite team, Tennessee Titans, when Bud Adams was alive and running the Titans, we were horrible and then when he passed away his daughter took over and the whole Titans organization turned around for the better. We have a great GM and a badass Head Coach. We have made some bad moves like drafting Isaiah Wilson, not resigning Jack Conklin and not resigning Jonnu Smith to name a few. But we have done some very good moves like drafting Derrick Henry, seeing talent in Tannehill and getting him from the Dolphins, getting Bud Dupree, and giving Taylor Lewan a good contract that will hopefully keep him here for his entire career. #TITANUP #TITANSFAN #TITANS

Jamarcus russell was the single worst nfl draft pick in history and al Davis ruined that franchise with his antiquated football theories for 2 decades. It took his son to let Jon Gruden completely overhaul it as he saw fit to make them even a little competitive.

Gruden is an average coach, with an average record with both the Raiders and Bucs (who won the Super Bowl with a team built by Tony Dungy). Mark needs to get the projector out on Chucky and get a better coach, so we can finally win another Super Bowl.

    • @G360LIVE

Dungy would've won a Super Bowl with the Bucs the same year Gruden won it. That was Dungy's team. Remember, Dungy won a Super Bowl with the Colts. So yes, he was capable of doing it. Gruden, however, led the Bucs to a collapse and is now leading the Raiders to a collapse.
Also, the team the Bucs faced in the Super Bowl was a Raiders team that Al Davis built before the Raiders collapsed (due to age and injury), then Al began getting desperate to win another Super Bowl and began making key errors.

@@Shinobi33 that’s a very interesting way to look at it, as a raider fan I feel that Al Davis just had a chip on his shoulder the size of Mount Everest and was a very close minded person. In my opinion he just refused to adapt to what was around him and because of that the Raiders Organization and raider fans have suffered for a very very very very long time second only to the Browns. The old-school rough and tough way of being a raider was fading away and yes that really sucked but if you don’t adapt how can you succeed.
