Seems like WS going for the Middle between Action cam and Pure FPV. Also it seems like that the Recording board hardware splits the MIPI CSI stream and record it separately(smart). Thats my guess anyway.
I'm new to fpv and ordered my 1st set of goggles today. You helped me make up my mind. Having to learn Betaflight, Edge tx and build my drone I already I didn't want to have to deal with the software and cable deal with the walksnail as well. I just want my video to work. I ordered the dji goggles 2
Walksnail will work without soldering the rx and tx .it only needs the red and black battery wires hooked up . Take it off standby mode to use higher transmit power . Walksnail heats up if just sitting on the table plugged in .
Finally this video from you. I was wondering why you haven't posted it yet. Also, do you know when this will actually be available to ship? All I am seeing is "preorder now!"

Fantastic flying and review, Joshua! 😃 That thing in the lights during the night is just lens flare. It happens because of the characteristics of the lens itself, how it's built and so on... But something similar happens even in pictures from the Hubble, for example. (In pictures from the JWST as well, but for different reasons.) Anyway, stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
smearing is not lens flare. lens flare is a very specifi type of optical fault that occur due to internal reflecton, is it lights repeating or even mirroring one or mulitple times in the picture, sometimes with a star or glow. smearing is from bad coating on the one or more lenses. possibly fogging, but unlikely on such a small lens.
Yeah I got the moonlight and when I did the update I was so confused but I got it working. The camera in low light is crazy. I like my caddex go film 20
Interesting. It will be interesting to see what if anything DJI releases this year. I'm all analog still, but leaning toward Walksnail and from what I am seeing in this video walksnail is still looking good.
So Walksnail can do 4k. Walksnail can do the 1s avatar mini. It has decent options in between these two. It's not best in field but it's not bad either and it's actively improving (in general). If you want to do both larger cruising, videography/photography and also whoops within a single HD system it's a very compelling choice especially for those new to the hobby who don't have analog drone's they still like to take for a spin. Headset could definitely havebetter integration people's existing analog drones though.

I have DJI (not O3) and HDzero ans Walksnail. Walksnail my fav now. DJI doesn't care about backward compatibility really. HDzero 1s board is great image isn't bad. Voltage goes down to 2.78v vs walksnail shuts off 3.06v but outside 1s whoop walksnail has better image more vtx and camera choices.
Onboard DVR 4K is cool and all, but I want 4K in the goggles! Its really cool for keeping the craft under 250g and that may be the reasoning for a system like this
I think an important detail I would've considered in the "should you buy it" section is that you can only use 4k with 60 fps. I think this is a pretty big deal breaker for a lot of people that just can't/don't want to deal with the latency at that frame rate.

I’ve always considered O3 to be too damn expensive as a system for a hobbyist, but WS is scoring some decent points here! Variable latency throws me off a bit when I’m flying, but overall performance is making an argument for including it in my fleet anyway…! Funny that the Pro is this good, while the ‘moonlight’ sounds like a starlight camera, but gets blown out of the water by the Pro in low light.
CIVIL TWILIGHT…This is when the Sun's centre is 6° below the horizon, roughly equivalent to Lighting-up time. In the UK, it is between 30 and 60 minutes after sunset. (Google makes me smart 🤪)
@@JoshuaBardwell make sure to mention the LOS rule. A spotter standing next to you while you are wearing fpv goggles is required at all times. You should have mentioned your “camera man” that was present at all times and watching the drone while you were flying.
@Joshua Bardwell I noticed in the goggles UI there is an option for Record on Take off. Is there any way that you know of to set the WS to record as soon as they are powered on rather than on take off? Failing a setting could you trick them to think take-off has occured when they're powered on ?
Thanks for comparison with other cameras, but why you not push iso on O3 to 25600??? With manual settings It can record 4x brighter than you show! It seems that you use auto iso which is 6400 maximum...

Hi JB! Thanks for your opinion, it certainly helps. What would have been interesting to me additionally, since you're mentioning the over-contrastiness of the DVR recording, is having contrast, saturation (and sharpness since we're at it) all the way down and see the effect it has on both the DVR recording and Goggle signal. It seems like the DVR board does some color corrections before storing the video which it does not pass on to the VTX. So maybe changing color settings on the Goggles has no effect on the DVR video but only on the transmitted signal. Which would be interesting in a way (to decouple DVR from Goggle video) but also disappointing because it would mean that the DVR recording is "as is" with no possibility to fix the unholy oversharpening and contrast.. Thanks a lot again and ofc even more if you have a go at this.
The walksail moonlight camera works in your front yard at night and you'll see the blue sky and it looks like daytime but when you fly up in the air and look down you'll see it turn grey and dark because when you're 25 ft away from stuff it's bright enough like daytime at night but when you go 100 feet up in the air and look down you're four times as far away so it's like 16 times darker from 100 feet awaythan 25 feet away . right ? So if you see a dark place it might light up into view if you fly into it .
I've learned so much from your videos but I dislike subscription model payments, even for good causes like supporting your channel. But luckily I can support your work at least with a tiny sum via this system so here you go, buy yourself few sets of props 😁
Great info. I didn't like DJI's lack of vrx and forcing pilots to be the antenna stalk. Walksnail is the solution for lowkey and stealth piloting. I always set the vrx aside concealed inconspicuously while piloting in public. I FPV my 250 gram helicopter in municipal parks, and when kids ask their parents how the craft knows where it is going, their parents explain and tell me they like it. My videos are in my channel.
The moonlight has artificial sharpening happening. It looks sharper, but at the expense of image quality. If you want that same look of sharpness you could definitely get it in post with the 03, but as with your contrast example, it’s always better to have the more natural image to start with.

But no, I will continue with Walksnail as my primary system. so it will be analog for 65 whoop, HDZero for 75 whoop, Walksnail for flywoo nano baby 1S FR16 and sizes above it up to 5", and DJI for my flying potato scout drone. lot of freakin' systems
You can fly at night. Even as a recreational pilot. Just put blinking collision marker lights that can be seen from 3 statute miles on your drone. Part 107 holder have to take an extra test I think.

Unfortunately, that's not what's going on. You can see when he rolls his quad that the smearing curves in the corners and is not just absolutely straight. You have the exact same effect when you wipe with your finger from left to right over your phone camera. The grease causes scattering, this is not what you call a lens flare due to bad optics or coating. I am quite certain that lens was clean, but still greasy... sorry JB
If caddx is using their normal m8 lenses they are far superior in sharpness and contrast to the lenses on 03. Caddx lenses are also usually f1.8 or even 1.2! The 03's are f2.4
Are there any small action cams, like the Runcam Thumb, Walksnail, or similar that can be moded to take bracketed stills for HDR photography while mounted on an FPV drone?
The front of your lens might have been clean, but what about the back part? Maybe that was causing the smearing. I broke the internal filter on one of my cameras and it looked like water flowing across the lens.
Did you by chance take the pre-installed ND filter off of the Moonlight Camera when you flew at night? Just curious as it could effect it's night vision i believe🤷🏻 Cheers Bud 🍻
Contrast,.. yeah, that choice is a film maker one. The Moonlight could seriously challenge the DJI if the contrast and sharpness of the camera could be adjusted in user settings.
@@JoshuaBardwell I got a Zohd Drift BNF kit as a 'my first wing', TX16S, and secondhand HD02's, and it's so much fun. There's a secondhand 1.2m Opterra sitting in a cuboard, I'm thinking Speedybee iNav FC, spare FrSky XM+, and then add the Walksnail VRx to the HD02's and Moonlight kit for the vision, then add MotionSic pan/tilt and Trinity headtracker. Being able to go back through older videos and check multiple reviews and points of view is a great resource to have access to. Thanks!!
Hello, I just bought this model of camera and it is getting extremely hot. It gets up to 90 degrees when it's on the table and shuts down. Does your camera get hot? How can I cool the camera?

@@JoshuaBardwell ok but you say that the problem is the same when using gyro flow. This is why I'm surprised. (I don't intend to use eis but record gyro data for gyro flow)
I haven't personally tested that with gyroflow. It's just speculation based on the built-in EIS result. Maybe gyroflow will have better results. But personally, just from the experience of flying the Moonlight, I don't believe it has wider FOV than the O3. When the O3 is set to ultra-wide, it's ridiculously wide and I always fly at Wide instead. I didn't have that experience with the Moonlight at all.
CAUTION, the image at 14:42 has the link cable fitted incorrectly, the white wires should be pointing towards the middle of case, where the white spot is. Fortunately it does not seem to cause damage if powered up in this wrong orientation.

I’m thinking of getting DJI for a small, long range airplane I’m building, if Caddx can figure out how to increase range and penetration to that of DJI, well, there’s no more competition. But who knows? DJI O3 and Goggles are on super sale now, so maybe we’ll see DJI O4 air units soon.
Isn't there a HDR mode? Isaw a color setting in the recording menu ??? 4k video 10bit as far as I know is HDR LITERALLY what you said about the shadows is only true with NON HDR video, the higher dynamic range gives you both way more shadow detail AND way more contrast AND way more color detail in the bright colors , then you can do ANYTHING to it in post or just see how it looks 50TIMES better (less film like true) but so much detail in darks and brights than non HDR IF the camera IS actually true HDR 10bit capable it will blow your mind the difference but it ALL has to be actual HDR and 10bit
Smearing on your camera lens is dirty.. i tried tge glowing in light.. i tried to wipe sideway and vertical it will follow the wipe print.. and wipe it it with eyeglass cloth its gone and clean..
Caddx the epitome of quantity over quality. They keep releasing new stuff but it seems none of it is any better than they original stuff they released. The V1 goggles are better than the goggle x The V1 vtx has better range than the new VTX's. The firmwares introduce as many problems as they solve and in order to use new VTX's your forced to update. Honestly I wont be probably building more than 2 long range drones with this system as I need something reliable and the V1 equipment with fw 31 1080p60 sharpening down to 3 exposure +0.3 1200mw is as good an image you can expect from a tiny lens like that. 5km out still holding 11mbits on standard antennas both ends with this v1 setup.
The ease of use of the DJI O3 just blows it out of the water... While Caddx are trying..... producing a sub-par product vs a year plus old product.... keeping to their usual style I guess.
I'm gonna have to disagree. You hook up a walksnail product, hit bind, and fly. There's no registering, activation, etc. Like you have to do with the o3 before you can fly.

It’s super hard to decide when you’re starting out. After the goggles x debacle, for me, walksnail is at the bottom of the list. I have DJI and am extremely happy with that decision. I feel like DJI is the most accessible and it’s just gonna work. I think I will end up also getting into HDzero for whoops and low latency. But it seems like the supply for all parts of hdzero are tough to come by. If that was someone’s only system, I think that also needs to be factored in. It would really suck to be grounded due to not being able to purchase a vtx anywhere. Just my 2 cents.

And, most importantly, if you're flying at civil twilight, then you're not flying at night, and all the FAA restrictions don't trigger.
It also applies in the morning before sunrise.

There is probably an optimal setting for saturation/whitebalance/noisereduction etc... To get that good DVR that you can play with in post!
This is the best low light camera on the market. Hands down. I'd love to see suggestions for best low light/ daytime light settings

How are you getting the hovering so smooth? I’m still on a simulator. So I’m new.

The front of your lens might have been clean, but what about the back part? Maybe that was causing the smearing. I broke the internal filter on one of my cameras and it looked like water flowing across the lens.
How does it differ if you unplug it or if you run out of battery?

Yeah it's 8 bit. Only DJI O3 currently has 10 bit.
Did you by chance take the pre-installed ND filter off of the Moonlight Camera when you flew at night? Just curious as it could effect it's night vision i believe🤷🏻 Cheers Bud 🍻

I wanted WS to win here, but tbh it reminds me more of the first DJI digital fpv system.
since the fpv view isnt 4k it each pixel is the light of 4 or even more pixels . therefore the fpv view is brighter and less noisy
Contrast,.. yeah, that choice is a film maker one. The Moonlight could seriously challenge the DJI if the contrast and sharpness of the camera could be adjusted in user settings.

@@JoshuaBardwell I got a Zohd Drift BNF kit as a 'my first wing', TX16S, and secondhand HD02's, and it's so much fun. There's a secondhand 1.2m Opterra sitting in a cuboard, I'm thinking Speedybee iNav FC, spare FrSky XM+, and then add the Walksnail VRx to the HD02's and Moonlight kit for the vision, then add MotionSic pan/tilt and Trinity headtracker. Being able to go back through older videos and check multiple reviews and points of view is a great resource to have access to. Thanks!!

Hello, I just bought this model of camera and it is getting extremely hot. It gets up to 90 degrees when it's on the table and shuts down. Does your camera get hot? How can I cool the camera?

Strange that you indicate a wider fov on the O3 as it got 155 degrés compared to 160dgres annonces by caddx on the Moonlight
Maybe caddx is zooming in more when EIS is on.
@@JoshuaBardwell ok but you say that the problem is the same when using gyro flow. This is why I'm surprised. (I don't intend to use eis but record gyro data for gyro flow)
I haven't personally tested that with gyroflow. It's just speculation based on the built-in EIS result. Maybe gyroflow will have better results. But personally, just from the experience of flying the Moonlight, I don't believe it has wider FOV than the O3. When the O3 is set to ultra-wide, it's ridiculously wide and I always fly at Wide instead. I didn't have that experience with the Moonlight at all.
CAUTION, the image at 14:42 has the link cable fitted incorrectly, the white wires should be pointing towards the middle of case, where the white spot is. Fortunately it does not seem to cause damage if powered up in this wrong orientation.
If I'm flying night I still prefer my analog runcam night eagles. 🤫

I’m thinking of getting DJI for a small, long range airplane I’m building, if Caddx can figure out how to increase range and penetration to that of DJI, well, there’s no more competition. But who knows? DJI O3 and Goggles are on super sale now, so maybe we’ll see DJI O4 air units soon.
Isn't there a HDR mode? Isaw a color setting in the recording menu ??? 4k video 10bit as far as I know is HDR LITERALLY what you said about the shadows is only true with NON HDR video, the higher dynamic range gives you both way more shadow detail AND way more contrast AND way more color detail in the bright colors , then you can do ANYTHING to it in post or just see how it looks 50TIMES better (less film like true) but so much detail in darks and brights than non HDR IF the camera IS actually true HDR 10bit capable it will blow your mind the difference but it ALL has to be actual HDR and 10bit
Smearing on your camera lens is dirty.. i tried tge glowing in light.. i tried to wipe sideway and vertical it will follow the wipe print.. and wipe it it with eyeglass cloth its gone and clean..

They keep releasing new stuff but it seems none of it is any better than they original stuff they released.
The V1 goggles are better than the goggle x
The V1 vtx has better range than the new VTX's.
The firmwares introduce as many problems as they solve and in order to use new VTX's your forced to update.
Honestly I wont be probably building more than 2 long range drones with this system as I need something reliable and the V1 equipment with fw 31 1080p60 sharpening down to 3 exposure +0.3 1200mw is as good an image you can expect from a tiny lens like that.
5km out still holding 11mbits on standard antennas both ends with this v1 setup.
You should have showed the 03 in lit parking @ night like you did with the others, the 03 in a lit parking like that is actually really nice

I'm gonna have to disagree. You hook up a walksnail product, hit bind, and fly. There's no registering, activation, etc. Like you have to do with the o3 before you can fly.

Because they were paying attention to the video... He clearly stated the jello was the quad and apologized.

It’s super hard to decide when you’re starting out. After the goggles x debacle, for me, walksnail is at the bottom of the list. I have DJI and am extremely happy with that decision. I feel like DJI is the most accessible and it’s just gonna work. I think I will end up also getting into HDzero for whoops and low latency. But it seems like the supply for all parts of hdzero are tough to come by. If that was someone’s only system, I think that also needs to be factored in. It would really suck to be grounded due to not being able to purchase a vtx anywhere. Just my 2 cents.
