Hi everyone, at 27:00 there is an error where the images are labeled wrong. The blurry image on the left is DJI O3 and the other image on the right is Avatar Moonlight. This is a miss in the edit and please accept my apology’s.
Is there another mistake at 31:00 where you show the Avatar footage at sunset? It says 4K but certainly looks as pixelated and aliased as the 1080p footage from earlier. It really doesn't look like 4k at all.
It’s nice to have competition in this area…finally starting to see more and more advances in our video systems. Great breakdown as always, much appreciated! Cheers.
Interesting times indeed. Caddx’s “V2” system. O4 near the end of the year. HDZero is developing their V2 system. And a couple of open source groups are working on hardware. Definitely a bunch of interesting video systems stuff happening this year!
Hello from America, Ian . Do you think that there is some kind of pre editing going on and can it be converted to a naked version? Thank you and God bless you and your family
It's nice to see the pace of innovation in FPV video lately. Hopefully this system will continue to evolve and expand to the point where it approaches feature parity and provides some legitimate competition for DJI. If they can hit that mark and offer the system for a more competitive price, that's a win IMO.
At 12:50 you mention recording at different frame rate (60fps) while transmitting 100fps. But all then previous Walksnail VTXs allow the same (record 1080p60 while sending 720p100). I always thought it was strange that noone mentioned frame-dropping or something which would also be inconsistent because there is no way to do it smoothly like 720p120 - 1080p60. How can a sensor run at 100fps and record 60?! Without stuttering. Unless it a as running at 300fps 5 and 3 divisors...?
Excellent review so far (because it is all you can do). Thanks for the impeccably honest reviews especially with Caddx releases these days. Love the way you handle it, and you are one of the very few I can trust 100% of the time. As such, one of the channels I watch for product reviews. Thank you for putting honesty and the FPV community before anything else. You can count on my support. Love the work THANKS THANKS
I'm new to fpv and I've been watching a lot of reviewers lately for what I want to buy. You are a breath of fresh air with your truly honest review and also specifying that you received it for free to review the items. I've noticed other reviewers making there reviews so vague if they like something or not that you wonder if you can trust them or not. thanks and you have a new subscriber :)
Thank you for emphasizing that it is a beta product. Caddx needs to stop rushing these products out. I had to send my Goggles X back because they completely died after 5 packs. Didn't experience the overheating they just never turned on again. I am currently waiting for my replacements that somehow have been lost in the mail. This whole release has been a disaster.
Still doesn't have usb c built in. I don't understand why they refuse to put usb c on the vtx. They just Keel insisting on putting garbage plugs. It's stupid
So glad they will release the DVR board as a stand alone product. Hopefully with the camera too. I have a spare v1 vtx and a lot invested in the v1 sets.
This just highlights how hard it is to recommend new pilots jump on Avatar. With all the excitement of new products launching and then getting stuff that was hustled out the door before it is near final just leaves a sour taste in customers minds. Love the potential, hate the execution, but pulling for Caddx because they system offers so much!
Great video, thank you for that. I noticed some flickering at the slower shots. For example at 30:42 you see some flickering in the sky. Is UA-cam’s compression doing that or is it also noticeable in the raw DVR files?
Hmmm, I wasn't expecting Caddx to nail a perfect 03 competitor out of the box. This does look pretty intregueing, but wow that sharpening is a dealbreaker for me if they can't release a firmware that allows it to be dialed in to taste. The colors look pretty good though!
I don't see any testing info regarding GPS interference. The V2 VTXs are great in this regard but I think that has a lot to do with their external cases. Curious as to how this setup performs. also. the standalone DVR board is super interesting to me - particularly for use in large fixed-wing craft. Being able to shift the VTX and antennas further away from the camera should open up some equipment placement options.
Does it look good through the cam and can it perform in the ballpark of an o3? I like my o3’s, but caddx is figuring it out well. Looks like for the money, its a less expensive good alternative. Looks like the aggressive Auto White Balance is going nuts at the end. Will they ever do a vista 2??
will they have a version without that huge FOV. O3 130° is quite good and that means we can use frames that were optimised for O3 FOV like speedybee master 5 v2
I hope they do release dvr separately or add second camera input. If cameras get good why do we need a GoPro? I get two FPV cameras one on top one Normal. It would be super light and you can set different camera settings for flying recording.
Did an order as soon as i saw the news about it. Despite the fact that it is again needs some job on the firmware (and hw maybe), i wish to support them for development of such a product
this camera pulls some stunning video in 4k, but i noticed the same issue in both 4k and 1080p - why does it feel like the left and right edges are blurred/noisey? definitely more noticable on the left side. I really like the color pallet of this over the O3. O3 looks like much cooler temp tones and caddx seems to have a bit more depth. I am hoping by march we have heard about whatever new tech dji has coming and i can decide if i go dji or walksnail (still on analog).
Looks like it will be up next for my cinewhoop, haven't looked but hope there is a flat color profile for better color grading, also yes that fisheye is quite a lot hopefully gyroflow can take care of it
So the footage is all default settings, and noise removal turned off? I feel like they should have put more time into the default presets then, but also unfortunate you didn't have more time to explore the available settings Hopefully they can fix a lot of the issues with a software update
Looking at specs it Looks like it’s a modified caddx polar cam to work with the avatar system. I’m not knocking the cam. I liked the polar. I just hate the fov and how it slightly fisheyes around the edges. In this one it seems caddx has fixed that issue.
For this first firmware version I think that a 40dollars less price tag is really promising, but either o3 or moonlight will not give the image of a good action camera.
i thought this cam would work with the old vtx ´s ? then what is the kernel update for ? just longer dvrs ? and why moonlight ? is there some special night view capabillity ?
If they are able to get this down to $150 its game over for DJI. Walksnail is now the best all-round Digital system no matter if you fly whoops or full size quads
Walksnail friends, I have the VRX and with my current goggles I can only get 720p. I did this to try hd fpv over analog. Would you continue down this path and get the goggles or do you wish you switched to DJI/HDZero and why.
Dji continues to stay a step ahead. The big things they are lacking now is low light performance, and no options for 1S. Walksnail has already covered those weaknesses, and now has squarely aimed at the 03, with DJI just months away from release
Man. On one hand getting back into fpv last fall it kinda made sense to go walksnail but now it seems so half baked. My goggles x go to a black screen between battery packs about 30% of the time, is this a known issue? They have to be rebooted to recover. My real concern is it’s a caddx exclusive. They decide to dump it, go under, etc it would heavily impact the products. I can deal with bugs and software issues I’m just concerned how aggressively caddx is updating the hardware they are clearly putting out beta hardware as well and just releasing “v2” and “v3” you have to buy. I don’t want to do that for my $450 goggles. For analog I still use my original ancient fatshark hd’s because they work. On the other hand I have absolutely loved flying my meteor75 around inside with it while recording 1080p60 and just put together a 3.5in 2fiddy and diy rekon35 that are the first “modern” drones I’ve put together in 7 years.
It does look like they've had a go... but it seems like a budget version of the O3... which after a year of the O3.... well I'll just take and O3 fir $20 more lol. TBH DJI is untouchable... even just the ability to usb in pull footage and get straight back in the air. I just pray the O4 unit is compatible with the V2s
Seems a bit sloppy, 2 USB ports, 2 plug headers, and you gotta link em together to do updates...seem like they cheaped out on integration and duct taped a couple boards into one box
I think the unit that KremerFPV got is retail, and his footage looks far less over-sharpened. ua-cam.com/video/nvo8FP2a2e4/v-deo.html It's still not quite O3 quality but damn if it isn't clearly the best non-DJI VTX on the market! DJI is significantly ahead, and no one is keeping up. I find it senseless to invest money in another ecosystem. O3 was released a year ago and is better, and soon O4 will be released.
DJI might be significantly ahead but all manufacturers need to get with the program and come up with a way that we can still support their goggles and vtx eco system, while also giving people the flexibility of still using analog systems with a plug in module without using a shit avin jack. To keep price and weight down with micro whoops and toothpicks I like to use analog.
Hay I record all my studio footage in 30fps, it’s matched to that. There is plenty of raw footage around if you want that. I’m not really providing that.
Sorry but this camera system looks really bad (my opinion) Too sharp, too laggy and wait too fish eyed. Flying with this would make me nauseous, I think.

"A typical Caddx release"
What more can be said.
you have it labeled and talking about them backwards when you were comparing the two zoomed in videos.

I’d really like to see how this does in low light vs the older low light camera.
Thank you for emphasizing that it is a beta product. Caddx needs to stop rushing these products out.
I had to send my Goggles X back because they completely died after 5 packs. Didn't experience the overheating they just never turned on again.

I'm definitely making the switch to walksnail system they're making a great progress on their new tech
Aren't the labels mismatched on the 3x zoomed comparison? Thanks for the honest video!
Yes. Sorry I have pinned a comment now.
Hmmm, I wasn't expecting Caddx to nail a perfect 03 competitor out of the box. This does look pretty intregueing, but wow that sharpening is a dealbreaker for me if they can't release a firmware that allows it to be dialed in to taste. The colors look pretty good though!
You can change the sharping settings . I do on all of WS vtx's.
Aren't the labels at 27:06 wrong? Your description of O3 being muddy doesn't match the video
Yes sorry that’s an error. I will post a pinned comment now.
At 27:09 did you mislabel them? Because DJI O3 4K looks sharper to me and more "yellowish"
I'm here for the "whilst"! Thank you for your work MT.
great video !!! What do you think could have been damaged by bad connection and reversed polarity I just fried my VTX. Stupid mistake 😔
Great that DJI has some competition.
The flickering would make it unusable in twilight.
They should add 25/50 fps modes for Europe.
Why add 25/50 fps modes? It’s a digital video so stop using Analog PAL/NTSC frame rates as a reference.
Great review as usual. What's the lowest voltage it will reliably work on? Thanks.

what is the length of the cable from the camera to the vtx?
This is awesome to see it's finally here I can't wait to one for myself may wait just a bit
Did an order as soon as i saw the news about it. Despite the fact that it is again needs some job on the firmware (and hw maybe), i wish to support them for development of such a product

I see you got Nick Burns review model. He lost that plate you pointed out
Wow, this is really interesting. It'll be cool to see if you can fix up the sharpness and noise by playing with the camera settings.
Yup…I’m ordering the 110 kit…PayPal account engaged…pulling the trigger.😂
Lol been there.. only live once my brother 👊🤪💪💪

Hello, what is that frame you have O3 in it? It looks super sick 👍👍

You're BEST! As always ;-) Hope CADDX will kill over-sharpness in next firmware.
Wow this Lens Nd filter is so cool
Looking at specs it Looks like it’s a modified caddx polar cam to work with the avatar system. I’m not knocking the cam. I liked the polar. I just hate the fov and how it slightly fisheyes around the edges. In this one it seems caddx has fixed that issue.
For this first firmware version I think that a 40dollars less price tag is really promising, but either o3 or moonlight will not give the image of a good action camera.
At the expense of additional weight..... Which in a world of ever increasing regulations is an important factor to consider.
Will love to know what the naked version weighs.
Yea more info soon
Beautiful footage over the sea👍
Thanks.
Looks pretty decent. My biggest issue would be the fish eye and extreme fov. I hate that
Yes it’s wide as hell
Can you not swap the lens with a standard m12 lens? It’d ruin the stabilization more than likely though…
i thought this cam would work with the old vtx ´s ? then what is the kernel update for ? just longer dvrs ? and why moonlight ? is there some special night view capabillity ?
It will. The kernel update gives you EXFAT for the DVR to stop if splitting the DVR up into 4gb chunks.
thanks mate! btw:can you say anything about the vtx´s with hdmi_in and control interface for cameras ?
You mentioned it had a manual mode, does it take still images? If so is there a enhancement of resolution and detail?
No still images
