- It was around 2015 when Apple considered China one of the best markets for growth. And Apple actually hoped the Chinese market would one day be bigger than the US. Because at the time, the Chinese smartphone market was booming and because the Chinese population is so much larger than the US, it made sense that if Apple could become a leader in the Chinese smartphone market, they could potentially make more money from the country than any other. But since then, things haven’t exactly played out they way Apple would’ve liked. Because from 2015 to 2017, Apple’s sales to the Chinese market declined by about 23%. And that was the exact opposite of what Apple expected to happen. So the big question is: Why isn’t the iPhone selling well in China? And the answer is causing some major problems for Apple.

Also it isn't like apple is the most innovative so they could make the Iphone xs easily around 800 dollar. I live in China. I originally did not like Apple products, but the Chinese government censors almost everything Western. Apple is a very rare exception. I was forced to buy an Apple Phone because I needed a phone that worked well in China, and in 2013 Chinese phones were trash. It is now 2018, my Apple phone died and I replaced it with a Huawei phone. The camera is amazing and so was the price. There has been so much growth in the Chinese tech industry. It is true, WeChat is the main app for everything in China and if WeChat runs well on the phone, nothing else matters.

Apple is not a commodity. Their entire business thrives on charging hefty price in exchange for brand. Very capable phones are available in market for much less price. Economy and purchasing power are fluctuating. Apple had created big problem for themselves by growing fast. Stagnation will hit stocks very hard. It does not matter how big you have grown, But what are your long term plans. Apple has tried to solve profit issues b raising prices, good for short term, very bad for long term . Its not walmart where people actually need to buy products. Alot of my friends opted to try android because of pricey apple and are happy with what they have got. Apple has created problems for them selves by growing on weak structure. One big economy hit and company will go away like it never existed. Huge pile of cash won't help either.
Simple answer: Chinese built iphones, they know what and how much it cost. They dont want to get ripped. Chinese are smart in terms of money wise.

Apple spends huge amounts of money on software and their chip team and what people don't understand especially on software it doesn't cost any money to keep making copies of software and their chip team designs chips for fewer than five products. The next thing is everybody who pays attention to technology knows that it doesn't cost more to build a iPhone than it does to make a Android phone.

Erick G Almost, but you’re a little backwards. The phones are high quality and made well. They sell them for the same profit as Samsung’s do if you do your research. The maintenance part is where Apple screws you over for their own profit, as it encourages you to get a new one faster. Otherwise the high quality phone would backfire and people would very rarely get new ones. Not that I approve of it, but that’s why they do it
I mean it’s hard for outside companies to compete in China where almost all foreign companies have to have a Chinese stake in the foreign company in order for a company to sell or produce products in China. I don’t think this is the case for Apple but it’s why smaller smartphone brands aren’t entering China’s market and why only Chinese phone makers are now dominating in China.

I can help out. Companies can register as a WFOE which allows completely foreign owned companies to be established in China.
Apple contributed significantly to the fraudulent iphone issue by not allowing proper 3rd party repairs in the first place. This is a big issue considering that in many countries, something like a broken screen can take weeks to get fixed through apple (when not swapping out phone) but would only take about 1 hour through a 3rd party

Apple deserves to get screwed over. Iphones are actually made in china and get imported to the USA so the phones should be cheaper in China but they intentionally screw over the Chinese by raising the prices usually by a huge margin. I know because I've been to China several times. For example if a phone is 600 here it will be 950 or 1000 in china. And that's probably an older phone. If it's the latest phone it will be 1000 here and 1300 in china. I often get chinese friends who ask me to buy the phone in America and ship it to them. Even after they pay a heavy shipping fee they still save at least 200 dollars. Apple takes advantage of people in a big way.
Not only that. They employ slave labor and treat what's basically child slaves horribly.
Yeah maby the Chinese hate apple because they know people who actually work in their slave labour factories and know what they are like and that they are screwing people over, its not new they did the same with ipod and imacs awful company, theres other companies that have gone down badly in china like Microsoft, another slave labour user that's caused workers in its xbox plant to suffer respiratory disorders and even had an explosion that killed workers.
The Chinese are not stupid, I think they know people like foxconn are bullshitters, I think what really pisses them off is companies claiming they are not slave drivers paying people pennies a day to justify extremely over priced products, if something is made by slave drivers but they charge £50 you get what you pay for your choice.

The pricing in China is actually tax. Just so you know.... even if it’s made in China, it is still taxed because it’s an foreign manufacture’s product.

Actually everyone in india loves apple brand but its so much costlier here. The thing is in india there are not carrier related schemes. You have to buy the phone by paying full amount. Now consider this, Iphone Xs which is supposed to be $1000, ends up beings $1400. Dont even ask for full jacked up Xs max crossing over $2200. So its just people dont want to spend that much. The note 9 which should cost $1000, retails for $800-$900 here that too with bundled with goodies like earbuds, wireless charger, full year insurances and much more. Also declining rate is because iphones tend to last longer than android counterparts so a person who has spent full money to buy iphone, is potentially not a customer for next year’s upgrade.
And also people import it from dubai and other countries by asking friends n family. Coz it costs almost a return ticket from dubai, a 2-3 day decent stay plus the phone itself for the retail price here in india.
Everyone wants a real iPhone, but not everyone can afford it.

Simple, China's late to tech, they are not attached to the Apple brand nearly as much as the west, who many grew up with Apple products.
You can argue about features and pricing point all you want, but most iphone users would buy iphones regardless of how much is costs or if it lacks feature that android phones already have.
And there's just not enough of those loyal Apple fans in China, not nearly as much as the west for the reason I mentioned.

As someone who lives in China, I think Apple's main problem is about the price, how do you sell an iPhone for about $1800 in a country where it's manufactured and expect sales whiles there are dozens of options out there for consumers and very cheap compared to the prices iPhone offers. Secondly, since most of the foreign URLs have been blocked, you only use whechat and some few apps and I personally don't think the price is worth it.
well apple doesnt care, they know there are other phones. And they know a lot of people will still buy their expensive phones. So why get upset? (Not trying to be a dick its just, its a specific market. Like the XR, which is so expensive, and pretty much only the internals are great, while the screen has the same resolution as the iphone 4s)

I’m pretty sure China charges apple a very heavy import duty and tax fee that drives up the price. Their goal is to make some money and encourage locals to buy local brands.

Now I got adjusted to the Samsung but I will still buy an iPhone X or 8+ and use both Android and iOS for a while.. and probably end up selling the Samsung once I put my hands on the iPhone lol
It’s been awhile since I’ve been on android. I got tired of waiting for updates and when it got them, they slowed down my phone so much. At least with iOS it’s better, but who knows , maybe I’ll go back some day.

China's consumers are much smarter than U.S.A consumers. The exact same reason China consumers don't buy the iPhone are the same reason that U.S.A shouldn't buy the iPhone. iPhone's don't have the features of Android but are more expensive. The U.S.A consumers for some reason like iMessage and Facetime. The two worst messaging apps. Android has 80% of the worlds market share that means those apps don't work with 80% of the worlds smartphones. Who the heck uses a communication app that doesn't work with the most smartphone. Not so bright U.S.A Apple users. Every single other communication app works perfectly with 100% of smartphones.
I can't I have an Android phone. iMessage doesn't work well communicating with Android phones. That means it doesn't communicate well with 80% of phones well. So a communication app that doesn't communicate well is worthless. There is no reason to use iMessage. It is broken at its core. If you have gotten a message from an Android late or not at all. If a group message is broken up because of an Android user. It isn't Android fault it is 100% iMessage. If you use any other messaging app the all work perfectly between iPhone and Android. iMessage is the only messaging app that doesn't. It is the most broken messaging app. Stop using it. It doesn't work with most phones

For US I know that Apple has the biggest market share compared to all other regions in the world. And Samsung is popular in many regions in the world, but not in China. With the huge profit margin earned by Apple from its iPhones, I think the company can reduce the price of its smartphones. However, I am sure that the shareholders will block such attempt. Sigh!

I have always and will continue to use Android, because a close ecosystem is unacceptable to me. (And I wouldn't even buy any Android phone unless it were rootable.) That being said, on the occasions that I have used friends iPhones, I have noticed how consistently silky smooth and responsive the experience is - something Android can not match (especially after the phone has been in use for awhile). Also, you did not talk at all about cameras, which is a major differentiator between a high and mid level phones.

its just the price......thats all there is to it , since huawei mate 20 pro sells around 700-800 dollars in China which competes directly to iphone xs max which 256 gb version cost 1400 , so you see....its just not worth the price.
Huawei mate 10 pro was and still is one of the most beautiful phones ever especially the blue one.
