I've gotten so many requests to build Natsu Dragneel from the anime Fairy Tail, that it really became hard to avoid. He's definitely a character that would fit pretty well in Dungeons & Dragons especially with the book Fizban Treasury of Dragons helping to add a bit. I would love to build more characters from the Fairy Tail guild, and this was definitely a fun character creation to make.

Not gonna lie when I first got into D&D one of the first subclasses I learned about was the Dragonic Bloodline Sorcerer and I immediately thought of Natsu to the point where I thought dragon sorcerers got the breath weapon for the color they chose (turns out the video I watched was for a Dragonborn Dragonic Bloodline Sorcerer) but my DM after correcting me was like "Its fucking badass we're doing it" I love Fairy Tail definitely a favorite of mine
I still need to finish the show, but I was definitely excited that this was requested so much because it was fun to make.
@@dndbuilds Glad you like could you do Kumoko from So I'm a Spider so What
@@Scalesthelizardwizard3399 been getting the request a bit lately, I may need to dive in
@@dndbuilds I'd recommend you do it's a good story
Ascendant Dragon screams Natsu as well.
Elemental Adept actually has a prerequisite of “The ability to cast at least one spell.” So for this build, you can’t actually choose it for your level one variant feat unless your first level is taken in sorcerer. Other than that, it sounds like a fun concept
Yeah this is true, but there is possibility to tweak it a bit with Variant human feat to choose Fey Touched (yes, the feat does not fit that well by description, but changing the flavour of it for draconic should not pose problem) getting a misty step that can help with Natsu's leaps into air and taking enchantment compelled duel. Then one ASI dump into elemental adept and we should be good to go. This would result in probably less stats at the end, yet it can help either with +1 to WIS or CHA.
I didn't think about that as much... so there may be a need to take 1 level of sorcerer to start, then jump back to monk. It would mostly effect the skills, otherwise it should be pretty similar.
But good call out
Skills change but your AC goes from 13 to 15 at level 1 so not a terrible trade off taking sorcerer first.
You are correct, however one can simply start with Sorcerer for a level, jump over to Monk and then finish off with Sorcerer. The build itself is still valid, and powerful. You just have to adapt it a little. It IS amusing that this youtuber made that oversight.
@@Cen2050so very few feats have prerequisites that it’s not uncommon to see and not notice them.
Someday Shalltear will get one
Someday😔
Dampir Conquest Paladin?
Someday maybe, but it is definitely a little difficult because there's very limited clips of her
She is basically a dnd monster so just look at her wiki for her state blocks and u can make it 😊😊😊
@@kdiab23 True but its hard to make a character that's level 40
Great video but I was wondering if you would consider doing Gray, he is my favorite character from the show and wanted to do a build for him but there aren't any vids about him.
always love me some character building stuff. Of note, the 6th level Dragon Monk's "wings" are mostly a spectral thing, and given that AND its temporary, its essentially a big anime jump, which is already very on-brand for Natsu :P
I really liked this build, I've seen Natsu Dragneel builds that only took 1 level in Monk and the rest in Sorcerer which weren't bad however that 1 level of Monk becomes relatively useless at later levels so this build so far is the best Natsu Dragneel build I've seen without homebrew
A single level monk dip is usually not awesome... I'm glad you like the build, I usually enjoy making builds with the limitations of not having homebrew to use, that way it's still allowed at most DnD tables
@@dndbuilds Yeah it definitely is a smart way to go about it and I like how you use point buy instead of standard array as standard array sucks in my opinion as there is less customization and optimization that can be done. I generally prefer to roll stats for my characters however I do understand why in a video you would use point buy over rolling as point buy keeps the stats relatively balanced and there isn't a risk of terrible stats since you're the one controlling them and if they're bad you only have yourself to blame.
I definitely liked how you prioritised dexterity over strength as yes Natsu has great feats of strength I think he has always been a bit more acrobatic than athletic in the anime, at least in my opinion. Natsu definitely isn't the sharpest tool in the shed so making intelligence a dump stat was the right call. I love the choice of Monk subclass as that way you don't need to waste another level in monk and going into dragon soul sorcerer after developing your martial arts foundation does make sense mechanically and also flavour wise as Natsu's training first started with his physical body and then his magical prowess as Igneel didn't want him to be weak in either which was definitely the right decision.
Overall I like pretty much everything about your build and there isn't much I would really change except adding two 1st level spells that being Chromatic Orb and Shield. A reactionary +5 AC is definitely good especially considering how low your builds AC is and Chromatic Orb is 3d8 damage ranged spell attack instead of AoE and Chromatic Orb can swap it's damage type between, acid, cold, fire, lightning, poison, or thunder. Basically it is a fire spell with it's own built in Transmuted spell metamagic so it allows for a bit more flexibility and I would personally take it before Burning Hands.
P.S. I only watched the video so I don't know the full spell list you put so just incase you did put Chromatic Orb and Shield in your spell list please don't berate me too much
Thanks, I really liked it! It would be very interesting to me to see how you build Lucy from Fairy Tail, it can be a good challange 😊
Yeah I've been wanting to make characters similar to Lucy, so she might be a good reason to use a couple builds I've had in my mind
Especially as zodiacs could be familiars or patrons
LV 1-20 Lore Bard could work. Just use Magical Secrets to pick up all the summon spells.
What personally I would've picked up the 2nd Level spell Dragon Breathe, and the 7th lv Dragonic Transformation.
Will you make a Ulquiorra Cifer dnd build? Or maybe a Aizen Sosuke build. Much appreciated and I love your content.
Gasp! My boy! Thank you for this wonderful offering
This was another solid build.
What about Hellboy? I feel you'd have a good time building him.
I know the race, but figuring out the fist of doom with a massive hand cannon while staying true to his stats will be a slight challenge (I don't see him having a ton of intelligence so going without artificer can be a challenge) but definitely a build I would like to do.
@@dndbuilds Warlock reflavoring Eldritch Blast as his hand cannon? As for the Fist, maybe a single Guantlet of Ogre Power?
@@phillipreel1774 yeah but I also kind of don't feel like he's super charismatic, in some situations he's fairly charismatic and other situations not so much, so I guess it depends on what I'm using as the source of truth, definitely one I'd have to think about a bit
HELL YEAH! I've been waiting for this build for so long and I'm loving it
Glad you enjoyed it so much!
YEEEESSS THANK YOU IVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS
Glad I could make it for you 😁
Omg! Thank you so much for making this one. I just started making this chara ter in a current campaign. Looks like we had the same idea on almost everything. I went with the magic background from Dragonlance and I have been going back and forth on monks level to decide how much I cared about evasion. But still glad to see i was pretty on point with your thinking. Thank you so much for this awesome build!
it's great and worth the wait
Glad I could live up to the expectations
Absolutely love Natsu Dragneel so this is an awesome concept.
Fun, balanced and fun to play. Wanna see Alucard from Helsing
That's one that's been requested plenty, but I think I need to actually watch more of the show before I make the build
I would had picked in 7th spell level draconic transformation from Fizban's Treasury of Dragons, it would have granted a faster flight speed and the ability breathe force attack breaths with big radius and blindsight (1 minute concentration though). Also would had taken quickened spell instead heighten spell metamagic so can mix a spellcasting with actually punching someone, but disadvantage is good debuf.
I think that's a solid spell choice I was just trying to stick so much to the fire stuff that kind of overlooked it probably, but I definitely agree that quicken spell might have been a better choice overall and I'm really regretting not going that route
@@dndbuilds not to dog on you man, i love your videos, but quicken spell feels too good for Natsu, Quicken a fireball or other big spell and then run in and fiery punch some dudes in the face 🤣. but still great video man
Thanks.
You're welcome
Great video and build, Fairy Tail was one of the first anime i watched and it's still one of my favorites, hope to see other Fairy Tail characters show up at some point in the future too.
It seems like video is getting a lot of love, so I would probably make a couple other characters from it in the future
I actually made a homebrew Monk subclass inspired by characters like Natsu Dragneel, Portgas D Ace and the FireBenders from Avatar: The Last Airbender. It's called Way of the Fire Fist and it is as follows:
Monastic Tradition: Way of the Fire Fist
Flame Arts: When you choose this tradition at 3rd level, your unarmed strikes deal an additional 1d4 fire damage that scales with your martial arts. Also, as a free action, you can create a torchlight from your hand and extinguish it at any time. In addition, you can spend one ki point to perform one of the following special attacks as an action and/or bonus action on your turn:
Fire Bolt - You hurl a mote of fire at a creature or object within 120 foot range. Make a ranged spell attack against the target. On a hit, the target takes 1d10 fire damage. A flammable object hit by this spell ignites if it isn't being worn or carried. Spend additional ki points up to half your Monk level to increase the damage by 1d10 each.
Flamethrower - Exhale fire in a 15-foot cone. Each creature in that area must make a Dexterity saving throw against your spell save DC, taking 2d8 fire damage on a failed save or half as much damage on a successful one. The fire ignites any flammable objects in the area that aren't being worn or carried. Spend additional ki points up to half your Monk level to increase the damage by 1d8 each.
Fire Eater: Starting at 6th level, you can absorb sources of open flame within 10 feet of you, such as torches, braziers, wall sconces, camp fires, bonfires and fire elemental creatures and use it to add damage to your next attack. Absorbing fire from 1 to 3 squares adds 1d6 fire damage to your next attack, 4 to 6 squares adds 2d6 and 7 to 10 squares (The maximum) adds 3d6.
Fire Eater Counter: Starting at 11th level, Whenever you and/or any creatures within 10 feet of you are targeted by a fire based attack or spell, you can use your reaction to absorb the attack, taking no damage and adding its damage to your next attack. (Whenever you use Fire Eater or Fire Eater Counter to absorb a large amount of fire or a powerful fire attack or spell, your body glows with a fiery aura, until you expel the excess energy)
FireBall: In addition, at 11th level, you can spend 3 ki points to perform the FireBall spell on your turn as an action and/or bonus action. A bright streak flashes from your pointing finger to a point you choose within range and then blossoms with a low roar into an explosion of flame. Each creature in a 20-foot-radius sphere centered on that point must make a Dexterity saving throw. A target takes 8d6 fire damage on a failed save, or half as much damage on a successful one. The fire spreads around corners. It ignites flammable objects in the area that aren't being worn or carried. Spend additional ki points up to half your Monk level to increase the damage by 1D6 each.
Living Flame: At 17th level, your mastery of your fiery ki is such that you can briefly transcend the physical and actually become your element. On your turn, you can transform your body into living flame for 3 rounds. While in this form, you are intangible, but can still perform physical attacks with double the fire damage, enemies that try to attack you with melee take 1d6 fire damage, your touch ignites anything flammable that isn’t worn or carried and you automatically absorb all incoming fire based attacks and spells. You also take double damage from water and ice magic and you take 2d8 water or ice damage from contact with any environmental form of moister while in this form. Once you use this ability, you can't use it again until after a long rest.
Ezra, Lily and Grey need to be next..
As pointed out at the start of the video, odd numbers don't really do much for you in 5e, so at Monk 4, I'd have bumped DEX to 16 & either WIS to 14 [better AC until Sorcerer levels & ki saves (including Stunning Strike, which went unmentioned in the video but would be good to cause auto-fails on DEX saves i.e. most fire spells)] or CHA to 16 [better Sorcerer casting when we get there]. Pretty solid build otherwise; besides not being able to pick up Elemental Adept at level 1 unless you start with a way to cast spells.
Obligatory day 5 kumoko
I do wish there was a straight up spider race to play as, but I think it's definitely possible, I might try to time it closer to when season 2 comes out
@@dndbuildsThere is a Drider. (They could also just be a Moon Druid constantly in their Giant Wolf Spider Wildshape.) Drider is basically what Kumoko evolves into. (When she has the human torso on top of her spider body.)
Thanks, I have been looking for a Natsu based build for a long-time it really helps. At first, I did a desert Storm Herald Barbarian up to sixth level to be resistant to fire damage and then later multiclass into Ascendant Dragon for the remainder of the campaign. But sadly, the DM stopped the campaign before I got too multiclass.
My table is new to d&d in general and they would love a campaign with that very distinct fairy tail flavor this build will help a lot thanks now for the rest of the guild 😅
You remind me of the guy who does the recesses cups commercials
I'd love to see a Jellal episode after this. I loved this show in high-school
I would love to see how you would do Mirajane! I’ve been wanting to try her in DnD so bad, but nothing really fits her build!
as an idea for Dragon force, tasha's otherworldly guise would work pretty well.
nvm draconic transformation exists
Nice build, pls do Tsuna from Hitman Rebor next pls
I rolled a nat 1 in all anime to know who this is, and a nat one on my will save to avoid the urge to now build human torch. I did roll a nat 20 in insight predicting sorcerer
That one thing that I did different with my character was I chose Beasthide Shifter instead of Variant Human and reflavored the shift as Dragon Force (Dragonhide).
I'd probably go fighter with Unarmed fighting (hopefully the dungeon master lets me have a glove for a spellcasting focus) and Draconic bloodline sorcerer.
IM IN THE VID! LES GO!
Hell yeah you are
you gotta do war from darksiders next
I have the Darksiders games, but I've still yet to have the chance to actually play them, and I feel like the second I played them I'm going to want to do some builds
Do Gajeel next please!
Now I need a Gajeel build!
I imagine a lot of the dragon slayers could be made pretty similarly just by substituting the damage type you want to focus on, with the exception of Wendy focusing more on healing/support spells.
You should do a zenitsu build with nine levels in wizard bladesinger nine levels in rogue scout and two levels in sorcerer draconic blood line with a feat for meta magic initiate it’s an amazing build and I want to see you make a video on it
Dunno if this has already been requested, but another Fairy Tail build I'd be very interested in seeing is Gray Fullbuster.
Love fairy tail
Seems like there's definitely a lot of love for the show, I'm happy I got to make a build based off of it, I'm sure I'll make a couple more based off the characters from the show in the future
@@dndbuilds love to see more of anything from you! Keep up your great work
@@zomboy9458 thanks!!!
3.5 natsu build is bomb
Now’ve you done Natsu, Need Grey Please
I'm probably going to be doing a few more fairy tail builds in the future for sure
i hope we can see a acnologia build down the line
Acnologia is a bbeg along with zeref
i love fairy tail but love to see gray the ice maker & ice demon slayer plz
Please do Shadow from Emmience of Shadow!
‘Sweet Tooth’ from Twisted Metal please!
I'd still love a kinshin himura build or a gabimaru the hollow build
I’ve got a “Natsu” character I play and also a “mystogan” one
Any similarities in the build to this one? Or did you take a completely different route?
@@dndbuilds my Natsu character is currently only level 5 in the campaign, I’ve gone straight monk up until this point but I like what you did with the build so I may do something similar
I went to a store, rolled a Nat 20 on my persuasion check to renegotiate the price and got a "fair retail."
ASTV is quite a popular and successful movie and a great addition to the trilogy and given its recency I was wondering if you could make a set for a character from that? I don't mind which one because I'm pretty sure they could all make for great sets such as The Spot, Miguel, the Spider-Gang members also all seem to be very diverse in their powers as far as Spider-Totems go and while the Spider-Society are relatively the same there are of course unique stand out members such as Web Slinger and Peter Parkedcar.
Oh god, I can make this build busted in the dnd server I'm in, especially if I get the arm and leg wraps of dragon's flame which makes you immune to fire and makes your unarmed attack do an extra 2d6 fire damage, then slap the Red Dragon Mask on top of it which gives Damage Absorption, so if you're immune to fire, you heal for half of any fire damage you take, whenever you damage something with fire, it is set on fire and takes 1d6 fire damage per round until it uses a action to douse the fire, and you add your charisma mod to your ac, these are both official legendary items
Edit: cause I got to excited I forgot to mention the funniest part, low on health? Fireball, Wall of Fire, or anything like that centered on yourself, boom, lots of fire heals
I am loving these anime builds. Im wondering if you could do Goblin Slayer?
I know exactly how I plan to build him, just gotta figure out when lol
Oh, what about his demon heritage can you add something to do the demon part?
I know it’s not DnD but I’ve been trying to make Mereoleona in Diablo 4 haha
Can you pls do a build for Erza Scarlet and Wendy Marvel from Fairy Tail too? 🙏🏻
Could you do Gajeel next? He’s my fav! :)
I actually started researching how to build him, he is definitely going to be difficult, but I do want to make him in the future
Think Saber (Arturia Pendragon) from Fate/Stay Night could make a fun build.
I play a thunder cleric/ scribe wizard. Medium armor. And he was raised by a dragon....I never realized I made a lightning version of natsu....
That is actually a pretty solid variation to make a thunder/ lightning version of him
@@dndbuilds variant human, for my feat I took elemental adept(lightning) to ignore resistances. Blue dragon scale armor for lightning resistance.
Still wanting Pegasus Seiya from Knights of the Zodiac.
Death from darksiders or any of the 4 horsemen
I really need to play Darksiders, it's totally my type of game, and I own them, but I just need to take the time to play them, and I'm sure once I do I'll get obsessed (like I do with everything) and immediately build one of the horsemen.
*Inhales*
I CAST FIREBALL!!!
Can you make Shunsui Kyōraku plz
Gojo please!
Everybody wants to be the cool anime character but no one wants to play as a monk… very good video I just always play monks
I have so many monk characters that I've built, because they just happen to fit so many characters. And I love playing as a monk, they have less flashy stuff, but it leaves so much more room for role playing badass martial arts moments
I think it’s a very fun build! Although if I was able to get to max level, I would go at least level 17 In sorcerer for meteor swarm or wish. Wish is the ULTIMATE protagonist spell. Lol. 😂
What about the ability to eat fire and later on lightning which would not only heal but restore magic. Is there an ability to do that in dnd
Can we get a Neptune from Neptunia build, please?
I’m little late on the party but could you try do gajeel redfox metal dragon slayer
Hmhm, i've never seen Fairytale apart from the aleged One Piece Rip offs, but thats a good build, nice job man.
But speaking of OP, do you have more of them coming up? I'd be hyped
I've gotten a few requests, but no one character has been standing out as far as requests go, at least not yet. So I'm waiting to see if there's one character that people want to see more than others
How bout gokedera or Yamamoto from reborn!
I feel like Natsu would probably be fighter oriented rather than monk, take the unarmed fighting style Do you immediately go to a D8 for your punches. For feats I would definitely go elemental adept but I think you’re tough could also work if you go mostly sorcerer. Decks would definitely be something important but I think strength would be something that would fit him as well to level because this man can punch people through buildings. Intelligence would probably be his dump stat. But that’s just my opinion
Cid Kagenou/Shadow from The Eminence in Shadow please!
Fun fact: Natsu is actually a demon throughout most of the series. He becomes human towards the end of the series
ERZA PLEASE!
Please do krieg from borderlands
Is it possible to make Generator Rex?
Shiki Granbell from Eden's zero in D&D pleas
I wonder how you make gajeel
Sukuna from jujutsu kaisen would be interesting.
can anyone tel me whats the maximum dagame can this build do
My second ever character was Natsu inspired but it was 4 years ago, and I tried with a four elements monk. Not nearly as great as this build!
I feel like Ascendant Dragon was just WOTC realizing Four Elements wasn't all that great, and finding a way to upgrade it
@@dndbuilds and sadly while the subclass flavor is cool, it's still not as good as it could've been. like why limit the spectral wings like they did? spellcasters can cast fly at 5th level and it can go for a while! maybe flying punch guy is a bit OP idk
What if I want ice, what spell stuff would you recommend, cantrips specifically?
There's only 2 decent ice cantrips and they're ray of frost & frostbite otherwise you need to use "transmuted spell" to change an element to ice
@@dndbuilds I was afraid of that, I was hoping I just wasn't looking hard enough:p
9:57; but wait, couldn't you combine the ability of dragon bloodline and unarmored defense? After all, they have 2 different names, so shouldn't it be 13+Dex mod+Wis mod?
Unfortunately not, they have a rule about getting an armor class from only one main source, so it usually doesn't stack. It's on page 14 of the players handbook, but that would be crazy overpowered if you could
Odd. I would have thought "Guild Mage" straight from the Handbook would have been the prime background pick, for obvious reasons. Skill choices aside it comes with guild backing and a paycheck as well as a trustworthy way to offload loot, find hirelings and acquire new jobs. I do however think that it's a tad bit sad that 5E doesn't have anything like the Scaled Fist monk variant (scales with charisma instead of wisdom for class abilities) in Pathfinder or the OG Dragon Disciple prestige class from older editions (where it wasn't too difficult to crank your strength in human form all the way to 30 or higher, assuming you started with 18, picked up the four extra from dragon disciple, invested all your level up bonuses to str and a half decent strength boosting item.) Starting monk then picking up enough levels of sorc to get dragon disciple used to be my favorite way to build Natsu, or any elemental martial arts character really.
I'm curious what is the ac? I don't know if i math it correctly but I got 16 to 19
With draconic bloodline you wind up with 18 ac
I do wonder what natsus race would be in D'n'D. Spoilers for the show up coming
In the show he was a human who died, got turned into a demon, gott reborn and with his magic he got a dragon seed inside of him which would one day turn him into a dragon. If I don't remember wrong he destroyed his demon seed and dragon seed. Would this just make him a Reborn human?
What about unarmored fighting style
Unarmored Defense just isn't used once you get that second class, because it's better Armor Class than Unarmored Defense, but you still gain the other Monk benefits of not wearing armor
@@dndbuilds not the unarmored defense I meant the unarmored fighting style that lets you specialize in punching with fists and let’s you attack with a D8 dmg if you took fighting initiate.
@@joelcaples6022 yeah but considering how much fire stuff we have I felt like elemental adept would help us out more than an extra possible two more damage on the dice than we already get
@@dndbuilds that’s fair

Watch the film SISU, then *please* do a build for Korpi from the film.
That might be a tough one, but possible... maybe...
I have to disagree with the race choice. I know you chose Human for visual reasons, but Dragonborn is the choice here hands down. Just roleplay it as a repressed transformation(Which is true, Dragon Slayers are being transformed into dragons by their magic through the Dragon Seed they have in them, which is repressed in the characters in the show by the Dragons who gave it to them.)
