I can’t believe Lyle Chipperson isn’t in the hall of fame

"You get stupider by the minute" lol I miss Mike... Like him or not... there is nobody like him...

You don't mess with Mike's hero.
Mickey Mantle and Jerry West.
billny33 I read a Hank Aaron interview where he said Mantle would have been the first to 700 homer's if he had stayed healthy not counting Ruth of course Whitey Ford claimed that Mantle hit at least 100 plus balls over 420 feet or so that were snagged for outs in center and left center at The Stadium.
@M fighting is the only sport that matters.
🤣🤣, so true! 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Mike is overrated.
Saying Mantle wasnt much of a power hitter is like saying Steph Curry cant shoot.
Truly, one of the dumbest callers imaginable...
As I recall most of the parks back in the day were larger than most of the modern ballparks..
@@PapaEli-pz8ff true, and they weren’t using juiced balls, and they weren’t on steroids
Nah. Currys the best shooter of all time Mantle wasn't the best home run hitter. Bad reach.

Mantle was incredible. I grew up watching the Mick. Hurt most of '63 but still great through '64. The caller is ignorant.
I concur.
He’s clearly trying to rile mike up.
What else do you expect from these new generation fans
Any person to suggest that Mickey Mantle was "overrated," isn't worth talking to.
If you ever saw Mickey play in person you would never forget it. His drag bunt to first base was the best I've ever seen. When he batted lefty his home runs were towering flies. From the right side, they were laser beams.
Mickey at his best may have well been the best ever.
@@garymorris1856 I saw Mickey hit four home runs at one time or another, all at Yankee Stadium. The first was in 1956. Needless to say, at nine I thought he walked on water. Turned out that wasn’t true, but still…
@@bird401 i envy you. I just saw him play once in Anaheim, late in his career. He was playing first base by then. He hit a double off the center field wall and drove in the only run of the game> he also threw an Angels runner out at the plate.
@@garymorris1856 Funny thing, the very first game I saw was against the White Sox, with Whitey Ford pitching against a righty named Dick Donovan. For years and years, before the Internet, I remembered the game, remembered that Mickey hit a home run, and that the Yankees had lost. That much I could confirm on the Internet because I remembered almost the exact date. What I’ve never been able to confirm is that the home run that Mickey hit was to left field, batting left handed. That’s what I see in my memory, but I don’t fully trust it because he hit relatively few homers to the opposite field batting lefty. So of course it’s possible, but it’s also possible that I’m turning it around in my memory. I saw him hit at least one home run to right field batting righty; he did that a lot. Another one was batting lefty into the right field bleachers late in the game. And I’m pretty sure I saw a fourth, but that memory is a bit fuzzy. I think it was in 61, when of course he and Maris had their race. No homer from Maris that day, but he did rob a guy of a home run.
@@bird401 You have some great baseball memories. Thanks for sharing them. I never got to see Whitey Ford pitch, but he is my favorite pitcher of all time.
Mickey was once in a lifetime
Just to give some perspective on how crazy that caller is, Mickey Mantle retired with 536 home runs. At the time, that placed him 3rd all-time in home runs. Behind Ruth and Willie Mays, the two greatest players in baseball history.
Mantle wasn't that big of a power hitter hahaha. There's no way that could be for real.
Mickey Mantle was the best switch hitter in the history of baseball.
Caller lives in mommys basement,
runs 12 fantasy baseball teams and thinks if you don't steal bases you aren't that good.
He probably had the most talent of any player ever. Injuries hurt him. If he had today's medical and training no telling what he would have done. Elston Howard said if Mantle ever had a totally healthy season he would hit 70 home runs. NO one ever could hit a baseball as far as Mantle.
Lol you are brainwashed…
Actually, Ruth hit more documented monster home runs. That said, Mantle ranks second. And they both top the steroid boys
Lies
Where do you think tape measure hr's comes from, Mickey Mantle that is who.
Thought this was a prank call when I saw the title but the guy's actually for real. Mike did well to keep his calm here.
Calling MICKEY MANTLE overrated is like saying that Thomas Edison really didn't do anything!!!
He didn't he ripped off Tesla and others.
This man loves Mickey Mantle. I will admit it’s crazy how well Mickey performed despite being an alcoholic
And never took care of his body.
Yeah he was a degenerate
I miss Mike. The best ever.
The caller is pure KNUCKLHEAD
Mick hit 18 World Series home runs. He won three MVPs even though his top competition for the award was Yogi, who also won three.
Wilt Chamberlain & Jim Brown are other classic examples with clowns like this caller. It’s unreal how the game now is all that matters Wilt was the most dominating hoops player.
Listen to your dad. 🤣 I was one of the lucky ones who got to see him play. No one got you up in your seat like Mantle
Anyone, anyone, who dogs Mickey Mantle it’s not worth paying attention to
1:00 From 1951 to 1962...Now let that register for a minute...PED's?? Maybe Amphetamines...Strength training?? Lol.
Mantle ran on incredible talent, and booze.
And mantle had a good season in 1964 too
the biggest question is how great would Mantle been had he lived his life like a church deacon, sober and on point?
The caller needs to look at the dimensions of the old Yankee Stadium and then get back to us.
You are so correct about this point. He made more 450 foot outs than anyone in history.
I'm not a Mike Francesa fan to put it mildly but he's SPOT ON with his remarks about Mantle in this clip--100% spot on!!
Mantle at his best was one of the ten best non pitchers who ever breathed.
Francis Albert yes
In no particular order imo Ted Williams, Willie Mays, Joe DiMaggio, Ruth, Stan Musial, Cobb, Mantle
I'd say top 7 at worst
Flanders Ted Williams ( after seeing Mantle play a couple of games) called Mickey the naturally talented ball player he'd ever seen. True story!
Francis, you might want to put your statement in quotation marks. You got that from Bob Costas. Costas was right.
Francis Albert top 5
He might be thinking about DiMaggio
Mantle's lifetime OPS is 978, higher than Mays or Aaron
He was Mickey Mantle and despite severe injuries which would've stopped another player, he is, was and always will be one of the greatest players in history and a Yankee Legend.
This kid's just a dumbhead.
"The idea is to get home...Check it out"
Mike’s right, he did it all with a 10:year hangover, what can you do with a hangover?
Mickey was a great hitter .... in addition, he was a nice guy ... and nice guys do win over the fans ... When you root for someone you develop an affection .... like Ernie Banks in Chicago and Sandy in LA ... and many others. Bottom line .... I liked him. Millions liked him.for a reason.
Makes me sad the greatest Cubs hitter never went to the playoffs!
Sammy Sosa is the greatest Cub hitter ever
The reason this kid thinks that about Mantle can be directly related to the steroid era coupled with modern day ballparks which are mostly bandboxes. Guys like Bonds, Sosa, McGwire & others made a mockery of home run record stats. Mantle played in bigger ballparks. He was never a dead pull hitter. He lost anywhere from 15 to 20 HR's a year hitting moonshots in death valley of Yankee stadium. The dimensions in center and left center were huge in the old stadium (461 feet and 457 feet respectively). When he retired he was third on the All-Time HR leaders. If this kid had a chance to see Mantle in his prime he'd realize how stupid his comment was.
Mantle in his prime was a prodigious run scorer on a team that always scored runs. He was only in the top 10 in RBIs three times in his prime (51-61) and only led MLB once. And while he put up HR numbers that ended up #3 historically when he retired, he only had only 70 extra base hits once in his career. As the caller said, he didn't steal many bases (138 I think). I think he changed his game on that fall afternoon in 1951 to maximize his power and OBP to a team that had others to get him in. He hit for average and had an extraordinary OBP. And even with a pedestrian last four years, hit nearly finished with a .300 career average. And he played nearly every day during his prime, and most of those in pain. The guy was supremely gifted physically and horse. Playing in NY made him a legend.
18 world series home runs.
@@kennethschaible2862 He benefitted from dominant Yankee teams. He played well during the many Series that the Yankees played in, but most of his numbers were slightly less/lower than his regular season numbers. His homer percentage was slightly higher.
13 walk off hrs. Nobody had more
@@kennethschaible2862 Impressive number, but Thome had 13, and many had 12.
If Mickey hadn’t torn up his knee he would of been one of the 5 greatest players ever. Still, he’s one of the greatest players ever.
Homerun's in the World Series all-time.
#1 Mickey Mantle - 18 hrs
#2 Babe Ruth - 15 hrs
#3 Who cares. That was the dumbest caller, ever. Mickey Mantle is the best.
World Series Win's
Mickey Mantle - 7 World Series victories
Babe Ruth - 4 World Series Victories
Mickey Mantle, IS the greatest player, on the greater team of all time, the stretch himself, and Yogi Berra were on it and in their prime's. You can talk Ty Cobb over average, and I'll say where's his ring's, I don't care what team he was on. Babe Ruth, sure, but he fell short to Mantle in World Series Homerun's, and victory's.
So either Yogi Berra is the greatest player of all time with (10) World Series victories. Or, the reason he has (10) is relative to the fact he got to a great team before Mantle, and Mantle ensured it's continued success upon his arrival. Mantle won the World Series, his rookie season. And for 14 season's from 51'-64' Mickey Mantle, was playing in the World Series every year except 2 year's, from 1951 to 1964.
And he did it all on one leg (most likely tore his ACL & MCL in 1951) and suffered multiple injuries throughout his career. Not to mention he didn't take care of himself off the field. If they had the doctors and technology they do today and if he took care of himself off the field, there is no telling how even more awesome he would have been. “Mantle had the greatest natural ability of any player that ever played.” ---Ted Williams. Furthermore, as Bob Costas once said, "There's something about Mantle that scream out...THE NATURAL! He's a God-made ball player...stirs the imagination."
Mantle would have about 700 Homers if it weren't for injuries
It drives me crazy when I hear about who has the most post season homers. No one talks about that when Mantle played it was a World Series or nothing. Players now have multiple series to get past BEFORE they make it to a a World Series.
Mickey Mantles record of 18 World Series home runs will last FOREVER.
Great point!!
This caller has ABSOLUTELY no clue!
Sorry, Mike, but his numbers fell apart after 64 when he hit 303 with 35 homers and 111 RBI. In 63 he played only 45 games but hit .314. He was the most amazing player I have ever seen as a Yankee fan since around 1947.
He played 65 games in '63, but had some great moments - the homerun off the facade of Yankee Stadium, dramatic pinch hit homeruns - and he played with incredible courage.
Omg , Mantle was hitting hrs on 2 bum knees .
I refuse to believe this isn’t a prank call.
DiMaggio said Mickey was the best he ever saw.
"There has never been a perfect ballplayer, but Willie Mays came the closest to perfection." - Joe DiMaggio.
Young kids who never saw an athlete play, think they can evaluate someone solely off a spreadsheet. The game has changed, priorities within the game have changed, the way the games is played has changed. When I look at athletes and how dominant they were, I compare the athlete to their contemporaries and his their numbers stacked up. Fist off, Mantle was not asked to steal bases, but computer analysis of him, suggest that prior to his knee injury, he was amongst the fastest men alive at that time. I am a sports Scientist/Exercise Physiologist and Sports Medicine Physician. I saw Mantle perform only in the later stages of his career, when he was past his prime. At 190-195 pounds, he hit balls where no man hit balls before or since, further than steroid enhanced 285 lb Mark McMwire, Jose Canseco, further than Pujols, Ramirez, Ortiz, Stanton, and even Aaron Judge. Yes mantle struck out, but not nearly as much as Judge or Stanton, and he also routinely batted .300+ in his prime, and won the Triple Crown. His OBP was astronomically high, in large part to his .300+ BA and 100+ walks per season.
You have to include 1964, he led the league in OPS OPS+ and OBP, not to mention 35 HR's and 111 RBI's in 465 AB's
Correct!
I read somewhere that Mays' "best" was never as good as Mantle's "best". This is not a knock on Willie, who was certainly great and had the longevity factor. But this guy is trying to compare a player from 50+ years ago to today's standards. You can't. Thanks, Mike, for standing up for our Mick.
I'd take either guy in a NY minute. We loved Willie in NY. Hate that he left.
@@TheBatugan77 He kind of had little choice.
Growing up in the 60’s, Mays was my guy. All my White friends, Micky was their guy. Those were the best summers growing up in Brooklyn.
Grew up in a National league city. I saw play live: Mays -Aaron -Mathews -Clemente -Musial even Robinson and Campanella once. Regret is -I never saw Mantle 😢
'Mantle is over rated'... says the nobody 🤣😂
There's a video of Mickey hitting a chopper to 2nd. He's hitting right handed and off balance as he leaves the batters box. The second baseman fields the ball and quickly... Yet the Mick beats it out. Mickey could fly when he was young.
Ichiro was faster
“Listen to your father more”
Anyone who thinks Mickey Mantle is overrated obviously never saw him play and needs to get a baseball reference book to learn about what he did. Mike is right with blowing out his knee he still won the triple crown and was one of the best hitters from 1951-1962 of all time.
The caller has no clue.
Mickey Mantle hit 4 year 40 Hr in
.he hit tape measure HR 's that hit the Roof or facade, in Washington Mantle hit a ball out of the stadium they measured
556 some said 575 1st Hr to be measured, Tape measure long HR, 1 of 4 ever to clear as he hit HR over the right fence se said that ball hit about 656.greatest switch hitter of all time, leads 18 he's in world series that record may never be broken. He went to 14 world series and won 12.
No arguement about Mickeys greatness. However, he was 7-5 in WS appearances. Wins in '51,'52,'53,'56,'58,'61, and '62. Lost in '55,'57,'60,'63, and '64. From 1949 -64 the Yankees went to the WS 14 times.
MICKEY HIT 50 + TWICE.
As much as I can't stand Francessa, he is spot on here.
Mantle 1951 1952 1953 1956 1957 1958 1960 1961 1962 1963 1964. Played in World Series. Won 7 . Overrated? Mantle, Joe D. and Babe. That is quite an outfield. Yes, Mickey belongs in that group. 536 on bad wheels is Power. Triple Crown Winner, 3 MVP awards.
"You know what?Listen to your father..."
Hell, check out Berra sometime. Mickey was good enough to make everyone forget how good a 3 time MVP was on his own team.
Mike you were spot on!
Where did this caller come from unbelievable. When you think about baseball. Then you turn your thoughts to power your next thought is Mickey Mantle. Period
536 hrs and .296 career average. I wouldn’t put Mantle up there with Mays, Ruth, Aaron etc. but he was certainly no slouch.
Ny notoriously didn’t steal bags even tho everyone knew him n Mays were the fastest players in the league
Triple crown 1956
"Father knows best." Mantle probably had the most beautiful and powerful swing there ever was ... Just my opinion, of course.
51-64*
I was thinking that too. He didn't play much in '63 but had something like 15 HR in 63 games. Had a great year in '64.
I am probably older than most of these persons commenting and saw late Mantle live. Now first thing is this, this guy is not saying Mantle is not a HOF.He is saying he is not as good as people want him to be and he stats paint a different story he is not as good.
Now food for thought.
Never in my 65 years have I EVER heard that Ruth, Mays or Aaron are overated.
I have heard THOUGH this about Mantle from New Yorkers and others in the early 70's, 80's and so forth.
Also , when comparing Mantle to other superstars playing in the MLB; THINK ABOUT him playing in the NL.
Aaahhh. Not as bright a Star. A lot tougher league.
Note: Did you know that Duke Snider had more 40 HR years than Mantle.
It's been said by writers and others, he was injured.
That's life. Ted Williams did time in the service and missed years of prime baseball. Mays too. Jackie Robinson missed prime years because of the baseball ban on blacks. I think he got in at 26.
We can"t change the stats. Mantle great player, but for example :would take Musial any day. Yogi Berra said nobody can figure out Musial- (1955 All-star game pregame conference on how to pitch the NL batters )
Musial :7 battling titles, Hits galore. Etc etc Remember Mantle did well, but in a weaker league and on a great team. Let's be serious here. Mantle IS NOT A TOP TEN:
BONDS
MAYS
RUTH
AARON
GEHRIG
MUSIAL
AROD
WILLIAMS
JETER( CHECK THE NUMBERS)
PUJOLS
DiMaggio
Last note. Vin Scully and Ernie Harwell, many considered these two as the top Broadcasters in the last 60 years, never reversed Mantle. Now they did not say he is overrated, BUT never revered him.
Just food for thought.
Peace to all.
Regarding this caller... you can't fix stupid...
Pitch speed was way slower in Mickey Mantles day.
And those home runs were hit in the old Yankee stadium.
Look at the two HRs Mick hit at USC during his rookie spring training. Both 500+ feet, one from each side. The left-handed one landed in an adjacent football field, bouncing near USC Trojan Frank Gifford.
He didn’t get old he had a knee injury that he had to self medicate w alcohol still I’ve if the most legendary mythical powerful revered players ever graced by the Baseball Gods
I thought Mike handled it well better than I would have
Listen your father! Love it
Mantle is an all time great, but the thing that I hate is that people (Mike included here) think the term overrated means bad. It doesnt mean bad. You can still be good or great and still be overrated.
This is a good point. I still do not think Mantle is overrated but I would be willing to listen to somebody who did think so.
@@ilikepie19921 To listen to someone who thinks Mickey Mantle is overrated is time wasted you can never get back.
@@terrywilliams9924 mantle will tell you his career was a failure. Casey Stengel didn't even pick mantle for his all time Yankee lineup
@@t206kid It doesn't surprise me that Mantle would say that. After his career was over, Mickey realized how much his life style hurt his career. Casey tried to get Mickey to be a "smarter" ball player, so I'm not surprised Casey let him off. I still stand by my reply above. Enjoy
@@terrywilliams9924 100%, again though being overrated doesnt mean they were bad. Mantle had a lot of things that held him back, the injuries (not his doing, esp the injury in the 1951 WS) but his drinking esp. There was always the talk about Willie, Mickey and the Duke. Out of the group Duke was underrated, Mickey was overrated, and Willie was rated correctly
This jerk had the balls to call about that? Lol
I believe that Approximately 268 right hand at bats and 268 from the left side says it all. You don’t even have say what the 268 is if you follow baseball.

Mike almost had a heart attack. 😄😄😄
Talent wise there were probably few more skilled than mickey
Mickey was my hero growing up as a kid but some of mantles greatness is folklore due to mantle groupies like Mike francesa. He only drove in a hundred runs 4 times in his career and he stockpiled home run numbers in a short period of time. His batting average wasn't great and he only had around 2400 hits . Sure his numbers are good but not to put him in the class of Ruth and Ted Williams and mays and Aaron and musial etc . Its well documented that mick was a heavy drinker and I'm quite sure that hurt his career a lot . From a talent standpoint mick wasn't overrated but from a statistical element I think he was
If you weren't alive to actually see someone play, then you don't get to put your two cents in by reading off a stat line..basball nerd stuff, your eyes will tell you if someone can play
They came up w the tape measure homerun cuz of him
Mike is The GOAT!!!

"Lissen to yo fawtha moar"
The one instance I actually agree with Mike
Mickey Mantle wouldnt even sniff the bigs these days. Guys in the 60's were topping out at 84mph
Guys in the 60s were throwing in the 90s...not topping out at 84. C'mon. And if the average speed of a fastball is maybe 3 or 4mph higher now, you don't think Mivkey Mantle could have easily made that adjustment?
😂😂😂
Omg i just people never heard of Feller Gibson etc etc. Remember again 461 to center 457 and 407 alleys at old Yankee Stadium. Wake up you have no idea what you are talking about. Get a life.
You don't know what your talking about.
@@chriisdangelo1886 delusion runs deep
At the time he was playing, Mantle got most of the attention from the baseball media and fans. Aaron and Mays didn't get as big a share as they should have, especially Aaron. In that sense Mickey was overrated. By the seventies with Aaron chasing Ruth's record, the pendulum swung the other way and Mantle went to a back burner. It's only within the last two decades that Mantle has become appreciated again. Was he as good as Mays and Aaron? For a few years he was. Neither Mays nor Aaron won a Triple Crown, nor batted .353 and .365. But over a whole career? I would have to go with Mays and Aaron. Aaron beat Ruth's HR record without ever hitting 50 home runs in any season. We all know the what ifs with Mantle. He could have been much higher on the list. But he is high on the list.
Do not dare insult the Mick.
Please consider the three major impediments to Mantle's achievements: his alcoholism; his myriad injuries; the enormity of most of the outfield in Yankee Stadium. (He even admitted on TV one day that if he had not played in Yankee Stadium for half his games, he would have hit more than 600 home runs. That is a given.
Think about all those great right handed power hitters in the old Yankee Stadium like Joe D. How many 400 ft outs did he have?
@@donnie450
Mantle said that in his 1951 rookie season (6 weeks in the minors) he saw Dimaggio hit at least twenty 430 foot drives that were caught in left center field.
Actually - Mickey Mantle was significantly better than his career stats. Even his worst year, 1968, when he hit .237, the league average was .229 for that year. And his on base % was similar to that of an all star today. He was still a very good player in 1968. I think he is the most underrated player in history
I love how the guy says he wasn't a real power hitter. Only 17 men in the entire history of the game have more homeruns than Mantle and at least 7 of them were on steroids and even the ones that weren't had way more at bats/plate appearances. Only 5 men in the entire history of the game can match Mickey's HR total AND his career BA. And only 3 of those did it without steroids. Ruth, Aaron, Mays. That's it.
He drew 102 walks in his last season. They still feared him.
