Even if we just had a moonbase, it would still be further away than anything on Earth.
Given that the distance from Earth to Luna is about 363,100 to 405,700 kilometres.
(But yeah, the Earth to Mars distance severely outclasses even that, which varies between about 54,600,000 to 401,000,000 km.)

It's amazing to me that nearly all land is opposite water. Obviously our planet is covered more by water than by land, but the idea that the continents are nearly perfect cutouts to stick into oceans on the opposite side of the planet is crazy.

The sad thing is, a lot of flat earthers also believe no one has ever been to space. They say it's due to the firmament or other layers of atmosphere that nothing can penetrate. But technically only on the flat side they live on. So dig, flat earthers, dig. Then we'll really be able to go to space.

I love how you mentioned Auckland and Madrid being the most separated cities on the planet but failed to factor in Wellington, New Zealand's capital city which is almost the exact antipode of Madrid, seriously. For anyone curious it’s actually not that hard to find the exact point most opposite from your location. All you have to do is add/subtract 180 degrees from both the latitude and longitude. You’ll have to mess with the numbers a bit as coordinates are a bit funky with how they start over in places but not super hard.

I'm from Colombia and my house hits Java Indonesia. I live in Java right now and to know the time back home I just have to switch DAY to NIGHT and vice versa.
Also studied Film in Buenos Aires Argentina but got tired and wanted to learn from a totally different culture so decided to finish studying at Beijing Film Academy which is also exactly opposite of Buenos Aires.
Whatsapp calls have a bit more noticeable delay, plane tickets are expensive but since is the furthest I can choose different routes on the way back and visit new places.
Earth is wider at the Ecuadorian line so our countries are as far as it gets.
Ecuador also hits some parts of Indonesia and Malaysia but I have yet to meet a couple like that.

Twenty years ago, I made a pilgrimage to Santiago de Compostela in Galicia. One of the people I met along the way was a guy from New Zealand. He had looked up the point in New Zealand that is exactly opposite of Santiago and started from there. That guy has made the single longest pilgrimage _ever_ , from one end of the planet to the other.
(Of course he didn't _walk_ all the way: he flew from NZ to Spain. But the point still stands)

The closest-to-farthest-away place for the northeastern quadrant of the USA is typically Perth, Australia. For San Juan, Puerto Rico the closest such point would be Karratha, Western Australia.
If you think northern Montana has nasty weather and you are looking for a get-away, then the Kerguelen Islands is not only terribly difficult to get to... it is even more miserable. You might expect that at a latitude of 49 in the ocean that it might be comparatively mild like Vancouver or Dunkirk -- but it is heavily glaciated and it never warms much above freezing even in favored places.

The "dig until you end up in China" is true, but *not* from North America, that's from *South* America. BTW I'm Chilean and yeah it's curious that it's the opposite in terms of both time of the day and season of the year. In twitter many comments about this is about "send me warmth" or "send me coolness" depending on the season (sorry for not being a native english speaker, didn't find a better phrase to describe "coolness" and "warmth").
Currently it's summer here about 20:00 so have some warmth from here people currently in winter.

For what it's worth (not much), I searched how long it would take to fly between two of the large antipodal cities they mentioned, Taipei, Taiwan and Asuncion, Paraguay on a random day, September 16th, 2021.
Shortest trip duration leaving Taipei that day is 35 hours, 21 minutes. Taipei to Los Angeles, LA, to Panana City, Panama, then Panama City to Asuncion. Cost $3265 USD.
But if you want to go cheaper you can do it for only $676 USD. But it has more stops (Taipei to Tokyo to Dallas to Sao Paulo to Asuncion) and takes 37 hours and 10 minutes. Only 1:49 longer than the fastest route and saves you $2500 USD.

Being Canadian and growing up in the west makes me giggle at your full pronunciations of Alberta and Saskatchewan. It's kinda hard to put it into text but we pronounce them like "alberda" and sis-catch-wan. Another example is Calgary, which most people from the area pronounce it "calgry" which is missing a syllable in the "Gary" part.

What about the poles? What time zone are they in? [I'm being serious]. At the exact poles you would be in every time zone. This is like "what direction is north of the North Pole?" The answer is "The question doesn't make sense." This is actually a very important idea because people occasionally ask questions that seem to have no answer, but the question doesn't actually make sense.

    • @JonathonV

I was thinking the same thing. It would be twelve hours off if people still set their time by the sun, but in practice no country has done that since Standard Time was broadly implemented over a century ago. Plus, there are countries like China who are massive and have one time zone, and there are many countries who observe Daylight Saving Time and many who don't (and of those who do, different dates at which they change). These days I'd say you're just as likely to be 12 hours off as not.
