God bless the independent editors of UA-cam for bringing to life the cinematic might-have-beens that got rubbed out by dopey committees at the highest levels of big-money filmmaking. This, for me, is now the official opening sequence for Tomorrow Never Dies. This k.d. lang/David Arnold song is one of the greats.
Why KD Langs song didn't get the intro here is inexplicable - it's a million times better than Sheryl Crow; in fact, she's almost like Shirley Bassey in her delivery & power - a proper Bond theme tune
David Arnold had scored the ENTIRE picture using this song as the basis, then was informed last minute that the producers wanted Sheryl Crow to do the theme, so they had to quickly cobble something together for her. This, the planned theme, would have been SOOO much better. And I agree, it totally does sound like a bond theme.
I think this should have been the bond song KD Lang is such an excellent singer and this song works so much better but because a pretty face is more marketable than an excellent voice we have this song tagged on the end of the film when it should really be at the front!
A perfect Bond-song has to have certain ingredience. It has to: * Have an classic orchestra backing up with brass and trumpets * Be BOMBASTIC! * Have a singer with a POWERFUL voice * Have the classic Bond-theme integrated in the song and this song has all of these ingredience! It's FANTASTIC!
I like the Sheryl Crow song but I do remember watching the movie in theaters and when this song came on during the end credits, I was blown away at how BOND it sounded and I also realized that this song’s melody was all throughout the movie which again, sounds so much like a classic Bond song.
At least the song they choose for the opening credits by Sheryl Crow was also very good. Unlike the Bond movie Spectre, where they replaced Radiohead’s version of the opening song with a generic pop song.
This song was supposed to be at the beginning, and titled "Surrender." Crow's was titled "Until The Day." Then A&M marketing got involved, and the front and back songs and titles were swapped. Huge mistake. This is one of the all-time best of the entire series. Epic.
This is what the main title should have been. Sheryl Crow is good, but she was owned by K.D. Lang. This song was the very definition of a classic Bond song.
Lyrically speaking, Sheryl Crow’s song is a beautiful tragedy, like No Time to Die. This kd lang song is like a Disney song written in the same vein as “You’re a mean one, Mr. Grinch.” Surrender is a song about the villain, Elliot Carver. There have only been two Bond themes written about the villain: Goldfinger, and the Man with the Golden Gun. What’s worse about Surrender is it’s written in first person. This is Elliot Carver singing. That’s appropriate for a James Bond musical, maybe, but not a James Bond opening credit theme song. Every other Bond theme is about James Bond (ex: Thunderball, License to Kill, You Know My Name (Casino Royale)), or written purely as a love song (Nobody Does it Better, For Your Eyes Only, All Time High, etc.). Sheryl Crow’s song is a tragedy written from the point of view of Bond’s ex-lover, Paris Carver, pining over her love of James Bond. It’s based on the hotel scenes we have with her and James Bond. Sheryl Crow’s song is a MUCH MORE prototypical James Bond theme song, and more emotionally resonant. In the first stanza, she’s dead, murdered in James’ hotel room. >Darling I'm killed >I'm in a puddle on the floor >Waiting for you to return In the 2nd stanza, Paris laments James Bond’s life as a spy. >Darling, you won >It's no fun >Martinis, girls, and guns >It's murder on our love affair That line, “it’s murder on our love affair” is a paraphrase from her dialogue in the film. It’s the last thing Paris says to James Bond before she dies. ((Actual dialogue: This job of yours... it’s murder on relationships.”)). Musically, it’s debatable which one sounds better. I might agree that kd Lang’s music works better in the opening credits than Sheryl Crow’s song. But certainly not lyrically, and not overall. Musically, I’d rather listen to Sheryl Crow’s song in the car or in my workout. It’s a catchier tune. kd lang’s song is lyrically like a Disney song or a show tune. I like the song, but I could only enjoy it watching the end credits of Tomorrow Never Dies.
@@ohroonoko I agree with some of what you wrote, except the part about it being a better opening song AND the part about it being rare to be a POV LYRICALLY from the villain’s point of view. Goldeneye being a distinct POV song for the villain. Also Die Another Day is arguably a duet. And then there like another ten bond themes to dissect.
@@nicholastruman1273 You may be right about Goldeneye lyrics being 006’s POV (I assume that’s what you mean), but I’m not sure how Die Another Day is lyrically a duet?
One of the greatest Bond movie themes of all time. Even after all these years I am still angry that it is not played over the opening titles. Thank you for allowing me to see what should have been.
Same! Tomorrow Never Dies is a very underrated fun bond adventure! And this song would make me want to watch the film more often. Love KD Lang's cover of the song!
A million times better than the Crow Song. This song was co-written by David Arnold and he used different instrumentation versions of it during the whole film. The main reason the great John Barry quit the series was because he wanted to co- compose the music of the title song. But many song writers and singers were beginning to object to that and wanted complete control. The Crow song is a perfect example of what happens when you select an artist based on popularity and give them complete control. The KD Lang song is a perfect example of what happens when you select an artist on the basis of their voice and song fitting the movie and having the composer co write it. David Arnold basically did what John Barry would have done if he had been in charge. And the results are Sublime. Its mind blowing how this song was bumped to the end credits.
Same thing happened with Shirley Bassey and Quantum of Solace. Her song "No Good About Goodbye" she obviously worked with David Arnold to make it cause it uses the underlining theme from the movie. I'm pretty sure that the reason you stated above about John Barry leaving is the same reason Arnold did too if I'm not mistaken.
Well the main reason why David Arnold was not involved in the last 2 Bond films is because Sam Mendes the director of both films likes to work with composer Thomas Newman regularly, so it was at his request that he composed the films. Now with Mendes gone, we may very well see Arnold back again whom I believe has been the best for the job since the great John Barry.
I could have swore I read somewhere that he left for that same reason. Maybe it was something else I read and am getting them confused. I do agree that he has been the best since Barry. Although not gonna lie I do like Goldeneye's score by Eric Serra. I think cause it's different and that's why I like it
Sorry but I hated the Goldeneye soundtrack. Serra did not even implement the James Bond theme in any of the film and was overruled, when the Studio and the producers brought in another composer to re-do the Tank chase scene to include the Bond theme. And the song he composed and sang for the ending credits is the absolute worst song in the entire series. Thank god he was never invited back.
Yeah the end song not much a fan of myself and yeah I knew they brought someone else in for the tank chase. Again I'm weird and like the original tank music. Not with the movie but just as a piece itself. It had to grow on me lol but hey to each their own :)
So let's see. Tomorrow Never Dies rejected Surrender as the main theme. Quantum of Solace rejected No Good About Goodbye by Shirley Bassey. Probably because they wanted a more "hip" person, instead of what matched the movie and sounded the best.
+leftcoaster67 Actually "No Good About Goodbye" was finished after they already filmed. I read that the music was rejected and the writer then met up with Shirley Bassey and produced the far superior Bond-esque theme. It is a shame it wasn't used for Skyfall or something. It is a perfect Bond theme.
+Musicfan1020 It's an awesome Bond theme but it would have been a terrible idea to save it for Skyfall. The strings section references the Quantum of Solace score. The song would never received the same sort of radio airplay Adele's Skyfall did. And it most definitely would never have won an Oscar and the prestige that came with it.
What I hate is that when I was growing up watching this film, I never stuck around to watch the credits because I didn't realize at the time there was a far superior theme playing over it. Sure, I heard the first few seconds of the song, but who watches the credits anyway. I'm glad I rediscovered it many years later.
This fits so much more, and a superior vocal performance. It's clear that MGM chose the Sheryl Crow submission because of her being trendy at the time.
Tomorrow never dies is one of the underrated gems of the Bond franchise and it is fitting that it this also this movie that has a hidden gem of a theme song in existence.
This song is so much better than the opening song about a Bond Girl dying in her own blood puddle. This song is about the media and the news controlling the people through controlling the narrative. The Lyrics are brilliant and thematically perfect. K.D Lang's voice is as fine as wine. This song should have been the main song.
You can hear hints of this movie in the movies actually score. Clearly this was intended to he theme and someone decided to change it at thr last minute.
This song was the original theme actually. Crow's version was recorded just days before print after an exec thought Lang's was too "Bondy" and they were trying to get younger people who weren't classic Bond fans to watch. Lang didn't find out she'd been bumped until she saw it. She was still payed every dime. I, personally wish they'd kept this one. Its my 3rd favorite bond theme after Garbage's theme for The World is Not Enough and Chris Cornell's theme for Casino Royale.
Pains me that this isn't the MAIN theme of the movie. Crow's feels like an ending theme, where as this feels way way more like an opening theme to keep you excited for the other awesome music ahead. If this was the main theme, I would have it in my top 3 easily. But as it stands with Crow's version, it's only ranked at #19. I think Crow's version is OK. But nothing compared to Lang's surrender. This easily would've been the best Brosnan bond theme, and one of the best themes period. But sadly, we have Crow's, and it just doesn't really do justice. A real shame. Because I love this film
Remember at the time of watching the film that I thought Sheryl Crow’s song was quite weak compared to Goldeneye. Without knowing the whole story instantly loved KD Langs song at the end. Now I know why just a baffling decision to be honest. Surrender just has that motif that identifies it to themes from the 70’s Bond films. The music should be as recognisable as the character.
I have always thought this was the song most appropriate to the film for the title theme. I do like the Sheryl Crow version however I feel that it should have been on the end credits.
One of THE best Bond themes that never got its real day in the sun. Way better than the chosed theme for this film!! A reall Bond sounding Bond theme!!
it’s such a shame that one of the best Bond songs ever, one that captures the 007 vibe so perfectly didn’t make it to the opening title sequence and was relegated to the ending credits !
some folk in charge don't have a clue...so much better than the otheras in most franchises these days the execs forget the fans who like continuity in most aspects and will always pay to see their idols....dont keep forgetting that
I do like the Sheryl Crow song, but god K.D wipes the floor with her, so should have been the main song, and not stuck on at the end, when everyone was leaving the cinema., total travesty.
+upfrontbear74 I agree. Lang's song fits the theme of the movie better. Sheryl Crow's is from the perspective of the Bond girl killed part way through the film. Not bad, but certainly not opening title worthy.
Quite right! This IS the song for Tomorrow Never Dies! I sat in the theatre, I listened to Sheryl Crow try to hit the high notes (she does, but oh, how she struggles!) and then at the end came THIS! Picking Crow over THIS?!?!? It's called a crime against humanity!
Awesome i always wondered after hearing the lyrics why this wasn't the title song they just relate so much better to the film's story and the soundtrack as a whole!
I think this Bond title sequence and movie in general doesn't get enough praise and attention when it comes to visuals The visuals are absolutely BEAUTIFUL here, and so is the cinematography in the movie too.
It is amazing how much better this fits in the opening and even matches the editing better. ALso has much more of that grand Bond opening sound. Thanks for this and bow ties are cool.
Thank you so much for making this available. k d lang is a wonderful choice for this song, and boy does t bury the Sheryl Crow version. Makes me want to edit by DVD and slap this version on for the title sequence. Too many of the Bond films went with the wrong choice. Shirley Bassey should have done Quantum of Solace theme. I'd have no problem with bringing Adele back for the next film as I thought she was perfect for Skyfall. Dionne Warwick would have worked for Thunderball too.
What's irksome, is that, as you say, this song relates so much better to the film's story and the soundtrack as a whole. And overlaid on the opening credits, it totally works. Pity, such a sadly missed opportunity. It makes me glad that when I first saw the movie in theaters back in 1997, that I sat through the end credits and was treated to this song for the first time!
Not to parrot everyone else, but this works so much better that it hurts. Wouldn't be surprised if Surrender was intended to be the opener. It is obviously worked into the actual themes of the movie if you listen closely.
The same thing happened with Quantum of Solace. They had a great Shirley Bassey song that David Arnold built the score around, only to have it rejected for that White/Keys monstrosity.
When my kids are old enough to watch Bond movies, I'll have 'Surrender' on standby. Down will go the movie volume, and KD Lang will take her rightful place for the duration of the title sequence. Seriously, replacing this with the Sheryl Crow song was like having Q open up that massive shipping crate to reveal a Sinclair C5 instead of the BMW 750.
I have been a Bond fan since the very early 70s and in my opinion this is one of the very best Bond songs of the entire series! Powerful energetic and beautifully done,,, why was this not the opening theme????
You're not alone. A lot of critics wondered the same thing. From what I understand, David Arnold, the film's composer had written the original song, "Tomorrow Never Dies", and produced it with k.d. Lang's vocals, and it was supposed to be the official song for the movie. Then, Sheryl Crow came into the picture, wrote HER version, and THAT was used instead! I don't know if it's ever been established what fool at Eon Productions made that decision (My guess? Michael G. Wilson, the producer).
The film starts with an exciting and action packed pre-title sequence, then the titles start and the theme song is heard. The kd lang version keeps the excitement and the momentum of the film going while the Sheryl Crow version seems to slow things down and cools down the atmosphere.
This is literally parts of this song in the soundtrack for the movie, especially the horns at the start of the song as u hear them throughout the film, so this was meant to be the original track
Surrender : Tomorrow Never Dies - K.D.Lang Your life is a story I`ve already written The news is that I am in control And I have the power To make you surrender Not only your body but your soul Tomorrow never dies, surrender Tomorrow will arrive on time I`ll tease and tantalize with every line Till you are mine Tomorrow never dies Whatever you`re after Trust me, I`ll deliver You`ll relish the world that I create Tomorrow never dies, surrender Tomorrow will arrive on time I`ll tease and tantalize with every line Till you are mine Tomorrow never dies The truth is now what I say I`ve taken care of yesterday Tomorrow never dies, surrender Tomorrow will arrive on time I`ll tease and tantalize with every line Till you are mine Tomorrow never dies Tomorrow never dies Tomorrow never dies
I would run back to the theater to see TND again just to see this remastered opening! Why they buried this gorgeous song in the end credits and put that awful watery Sheryl Crow dribble is beyond me!
Probably because Sheryl Crow was straight and KD Lang wasn't. Not the FIRST time that the "Brits" have had a problem with someone's life-style choices. The first reported time, was with FOR YOUR EYES ONLY over the matter of a female cast member being trans-sexual.
I think it is down to popularity at the time. Sheryl Crow was the big thing and kd wasn't. Even if kds song is the far better song. From a publicity point of view Sheryl Crows song will do better as a single and promotional video.
The intro of Tomorrow Never Dies has introduced many of us to the cutting edge of Technocrat which has been greatly manipulated by what we perceive as "media". I found it most fascinating for the era of Pierce bond. The intro song was quite augmented in term of technicolor, mood and tone, and the most important thing, the sense of modern time.
Oh man, I'm fighting it so hard because I really like the Sheryl Crow song but this keeps bugging me. It's such a damn good song in perfect harmonization between the song and what the themes are supposed to sound like.
thanks for setting order into a chaotic world KD Lang's TND: Surrender is more of a "true" bond song. it sets the proper tone for the movie and is so damn sultry.
This track is about as Bond as it gets. I might never fully grasped why the producers were skittish about going all the way in on this song. I guess they were uncertain what pop direction to go in, but when all else is uncertain, go with the classic sound.
Thanks for doing this! The melody of "Surrender" was even incorporated into the rest of the film's score by David Arnold, the composer - leading me to think that they ditched Lang's song for Crow's pretty late in post-production.
+PromusKaa David Arnold wrote this song for the movie. The studio thought that k.d. lang wasn't a big enough name to launch the title song so a couple of months before the movie David Arnold and Sheryl Crow wrote a new theme song and David Arnold didn't have time or money to rescore. Hence the soundtrack has the same thematic elements as Surrender but Tomorrow Never Dies doesn't share any musical similarity.
@@lazenbear Sheryl Crows version was cowritten with some jerkoff named Mitchell Froom and sounded like a really bad version of the PERRY MASON TV Theme.
And NO, it wasn't a matter of "Time or Money to Rescore" because David Arnolds soundtrack was already locked to picture. Try to do some research, in the future, before you go commenting.
first and foremost! shoutout to the Sálmonader 👋 that said, this song easily evaded for years that I second guessed myself. lastly, love the lyrics and voice (great job yankee Lang)....I feel a lesser known Bond classic...and thanks for your edit!!!
This is actually one of the best songs for any bond film; what IDIOT relegated it to the end credits so they could use Sheryl Crow's weak-assed croaking of a song that had absolutely no heart??
This may just be my fave Bond song ever, I actually sat in the cinema till the end just to listen to this, still think it should have been released here in the UK as a single.
The main titles for “Tomorrow Never Dies” as David Arnold and the person that designed them intended. Just the sound of the glass breaking in the transition in sync with its opening bars says it all. Artists should be free to create art.
Oh, what could have and definitely should have been. Seeing it with the opening credits where it belongs definitely blows Sheryl Crow's droning theme out of the water.
👏👏This is awesome!!! One of the biggest mistakes in this movie was not using this song as main theme and not casting Monica Bellucci as Paris Carver 😭!!!

Much Much Much Better.. this is a great Bond song... K.D. Lang rocks!
🌟 0:06 That BOND Sound !
Loud And Brassy
Absolutely! This always should have been the title theme song!
WOW! Yes she is in control, and does she deliver! . It's powerful, beautiful and tantalizing.
Absolutely love this vs original mess !
Like THIS it's how this GREAT BOND MOVIE MUST BEGIN, period. THANK YOU!
I strongly agree with you.
She has such a beautiful voice, great job K.D.!!!!
This is far superior than the Sheryl crow attempt, this is totally awesome, powerful and fabulous, proper Bond theme ❤️😊
They picked the official song over this?!??!? Now this is a Bond Theme!!!!
No question...absolutely no question about that at all!
it’s such a shame that one of the best Bond songs ever, one that captures the 007 vibe so perfectly didn’t make it to the opening title sequence and was relegated to the ending credits !
some folk in charge don't have a clue...so much better than the otheras in most franchises these days the execs forget the fans who like continuity in most aspects and will always pay to see their idols....dont keep forgetting that
THIS is the title song they should have used! Perfection!
Hats off to k d lang and the musicians.. I like this song too much.
I do like the Sheryl Crow song, but god K.D wipes the floor with her, so should have been the main song, and not stuck on at the end, when everyone was leaving the cinema., total travesty.
I think Sheryl Crow song is better, this Lang's song, is a standar song, i heard 10000 songs like this.
Should have been FIRST and LAST. I would have remained seated until the last one finished...
caesarmtnmama Listen to k.d.'s with headphones. HELL YEAH!
It's called a crime against humanity!
k.d.lang is 56 years old! Happy Birthday, k.d.! 11.02.17
Awesome i always wondered after hearing the lyrics why this wasn't the title song they just relate so much better to the film's story and the soundtrack as a whole!
That’s A Bond Theme Opening!!!!!!!!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
It makes me glad that when I first saw the movie in theaters back in 1997, that I sat through the end credits and was treated to this song for the first time!
excellent, simply excellent
SO MUCH BETTER!!!!
This song always should have been the title song.
Not to parrot everyone else, but this works so much better that it hurts. Wouldn't be surprised if Surrender was intended to be the opener. It is obviously worked into the actual themes of the movie if you listen closely.
David Arnold wanted Surrender to be the title track. The production company shut him down.
That brass intro! Boom
This song is more of a "James Bond" song than Sheryl Crow's song. 'Nuff said.
I strongly agree with you.
It's also just a better song.
Sheryl Crow's is better
Absolutely.
They changed it at the last minute, when this song can actually be heard through out the movie in the score. Shame.
The same thing happened with Quantum of Solace. They had a great Shirley Bassey song that David Arnold built the score around, only to have it rejected for that White/Keys monstrosity.
Greg David Believe it or not, the Bassey song was actually done after QoS but utilised those elements from the score.
Lol
I have been a Bond fan since the very early 70s and in my opinion this is one of the very best Bond songs of the entire series! Powerful energetic and beautifully done,,, why was this not the opening theme????
Idiots at the top! D.A. had to fight to even have surrender as the End Title.
Thank you bowties, for the justice in your post!
I’ve bought entire James Bond compilations in search of this song... It is So good ! So happy to have found this video 💖
Love this why is this not the main bond theme for the opening?
You're not alone. A lot of critics wondered the same thing. From what I understand, David Arnold, the film's composer had written the original song, "Tomorrow Never Dies", and produced it with k.d. Lang's vocals, and it was supposed to be the official song for the movie. Then, Sheryl Crow came into the picture, wrote HER version, and THAT was used instead! I don't know if it's ever been established what fool at Eon Productions made that decision (My guess? Michael G. Wilson, the producer).
The better song by far. So memorable and K.D has an amazing voice.
The film starts with an exciting and action packed pre-title sequence, then the titles start and the theme song is heard. The kd lang version keeps the excitement and the momentum of the film going while the Sheryl Crow version seems to slow things down and cools down the atmosphere.
Amen brother!
This is literally parts of this song in the soundtrack for the movie, especially the horns at the start of the song as u hear them throughout the film, so this was meant to be the original track
Thanks so much for making this. I've always wondered how it would have looked. The timing is perfect!
I was just thinking about this! Great execution.
You, whoever you are, have just made my day. Always wondered how this would have looked. Although I woild have started the song a few seconds later.
Surrender : Tomorrow Never Dies - K.D.Lang
Your life is a story
I`ve already written
The news is that I am in control
And I have the power
To make you surrender
Not only your body but your soul
Tomorrow never dies, surrender
Tomorrow will arrive on time
I`ll tease and tantalize with every line
Till you are mine
Tomorrow never dies
Whatever you`re after
Trust me, I`ll deliver
You`ll relish the world that I create
Tomorrow never dies, surrender
Tomorrow will arrive on time
I`ll tease and tantalize with every line
Till you are mine
Tomorrow never dies
The truth is now what I say
I`ve taken care of yesterday
Tomorrow never dies, surrender
Tomorrow will arrive on time
I`ll tease and tantalize with every line
Till you are mine
Tomorrow never dies
Tomorrow never dies
Tomorrow never dies
It's such a damn good song in perfect harmonization between the song and what the themes are supposed to sound like.
this is where this song belongs, at the beginning of the movie
thanks for setting order into a chaotic world KD Lang's TND: Surrender is more of a "true" bond song. it sets the proper tone for the movie and is so damn sultry.
Saw TND at the cinema and remember saying something to my dad like "Holy shit, listen to this..."
The damn thing is even used in the arms bazaar while 007 is blowing everything away in the jet
This track is about as Bond as it gets. I might never fully grasped why the producers were skittish about going all the way in on this song. I guess they were uncertain what pop direction to go in, but when all else is uncertain, go with the classic sound.
superior song!!
That's exactly what happened.
@@lazenbear No, the producers objected to KD Lang's sexual leanings.....
Now makes much more sense.
first and foremost! shoutout to the Sálmonader 👋 that said, this song easily evaded for years that I second guessed myself. lastly, love the lyrics and voice (great job yankee Lang)....I feel a lesser known Bond classic...and thanks for your edit!!!
This should of been the main theme song 😍🤩😍
This is actually one of the best songs for any bond film; what IDIOT relegated it to the end credits so they could use Sheryl Crow's weak-assed croaking of a song that had absolutely no heart??
Well said, I couldn't have put it better myself. Me & my mate have always said that this should have been the opening song.
+varanid9 Uuntil the DAAAzzzz. That's how boring it is.
+Giradox I'm sure that made sense to you, if nobody else.
varanid9 Yes.
+Giradox OK, I lied, it makes sense to me, too :)
This was definitely the opening that this movie deserved.
To me, this song is the best among all bond theme!
Unfortunately it became post squence theme song!
william WIN T. N. This theme was better then the hot garbage theme by Sheryl crow
I can’t pick just one, but it is one of the best for sure.
Also Spectre by Radiohead was amazing
I get so excited watching this. It almost feels like we're about to see a brand new Bond film.
Oh, what could have and definitely should have been. Seeing it with the opening credits where it belongs definitely blows Sheryl Crow's droning theme out of the water.
If there's a release of this film with this song instead, I'll definitely buy it.
The BETTER of the two songs IMO. I LOVE this song.
👏👏This is awesome!!! One of the biggest mistakes in this movie was not using this song as main theme and not casting Monica Bellucci as Paris Carver 😭!!!
I thought the original idea was to bring back Carey Lowell reprising her character from License To Kill.
Classic Bond sound.
Well done. I wondered why you started it early then it all fell into place. Good job.
I LOVE THIS SONG!!!!!!!
This song totally matches the intro. Why the producers suddenly switched it at the last second, I'll never understand.
