  • After more than a decade of marathon running there is one thing that I'm an expert on. Making marathon mistakes!
In this film I walk you through some of the biggest mistakes that I have made running marathons, from the classic "starting too fast" to more obscure race day disasters.
All these marathon mistakes are based on my own experience of running in some of the biggest races in the world over the past decade, from London to New York, Tokyo to Berlin.
Learn from my errors so you don't make these marathon mistakes yourself.

I ran my very first marathon on Sunday in Chicago and I couldn’t have asked for a better first experience. I never hit the wall, I started fueling at mile 3. Didn’t drink Gatorade because I didn’t try it during my training. The whole time I kept drinking water. I was so tempted to eat the brownies and cookies spectators offered but I was afraid it would affect me so I only took bananas. I did slow down towards the end but I think that is understandable as your body is not used to this distance if it’s your first time. I will say that I wish I had done more strength training and hills but it was fine without because the course is mostly flat. I also tried tape during those long runs because i would always get blisters and thank goodness I did because it helped me so much on race day. I trained for a total of 20 weeks and it paid off for sure. I had a great time. It was a roller coaster of emotions! I finished after 6 hours and 2 minutes! Good luck to all of you who are training for a marathon!

Congratulations 🎉 that is brilliant! So pleased you had a good race and that all your training paid off and thanks for sharing your experience.
Have you got a next race in mind?

mixed agreement on point one: you should race in the lead up, it is fantastic for conditioning, and a good chance to break some PBs using your marathon block fitness. Agree that tapering for each of these races would be detrimental to the goal marathon.

A weird mistake I made was starting out far too slow. I think it’s important to know what pace you’re capable of holding and knowing it by heart so that when the race starts you don’t get going to too fast or too slow

My first marathon mistake is not using any gels and I hit the wall at km40, my last 2km was terrible, and I ran like a zombie. Anyway I still achieved my goal time and very happy with that 😊😊😊

Excellent video. These mistakes resonate with me as, apart from the foot care one, I too am guilty. I started running when I turned 60 having played rugby as a younger man, until injury forced retirement when I was 25. Chicago, in a few weeks, will be my 7th marathon, and I'm now 67. I did Boston in April, and 100% went out too fast. The last 10 km were really tough. Training for Chicago has been truncated, so I have to discipline myself to be realistic in my expectations. As part of it, I'm running in the world age group championships, so getting two medals for one race will be nice!

Boston 🤩I’m jealous! That's on my bucket list.
Good luck with your final few weeks training for Chicago. See you on the start line… 🏅

@@racedayrunning I have no doubt you'll do it. When they say the first 16 miles are downhill they are right, but there are a couple of inclines in there too. The Newton Hills are not that bad, unless you've shredded your quads in the first 16 miles (I did!). They also don't tell you there are a couple of hills after the Newton Hills 🤣
The really entertaining thing about Boston is that you go by bus from Boston Common out to the start point. Travelling 42.2km on a bus really brings home to you how far you have to run to complete a marathon. See you in Chicago, and good luck. 👊

Don't eat the hot chicken wings the night before your half marathon (Pacific Crest). Don't eat your pre-race food THREE hours before the start of the race (NYC). Don't opt for a deep tissue massage for the first time at the expo (CIM).

I’ve made all these mistakes in both the marathon, but also during training runs and shorter races like the half. I’m not sure all these can be called “mistakes” because some are more like general lessons you learn or simply strategy or race plan execution errors. Yeah, they’re mistakes, lol. Thanks for sharing!

I can repeat how important it is to focus on one race. I had a good time on the half marathon in 2001, and I tried the marathon 4 weeks later which was worse than expected. I didn't run long enough for the marathon because of the half and I had to walk for a couple kilometres around 35.
