How Accurate are Garmin Heart Rate Zones?
We increasingly trust data from running watches to guide us in training and races, but how accurate are the Garmin heart rate zones? Jim heads to the lab to get heart rate zones based on lactate threshold. How different are these to the heart rate zones suggested by his Fenix 8?

    Really depends on what device was used for measuring vo2. not all are equal.

    Do you periodically reset your HR zones on your watch to keep it accurate? Frustratingly it does not reset automatically, but everytime you get a notification that your lactate threshold has changed, you need to reset the zones.

  • @JanUeberhang
    @JanUeberhang 5 днів тому

    For my understanding the lab test result shows threshhold is at 166BPM while Garmin says 169BPM (Upper Value Zone 4). Zone5 is considered above threshhold. When using your Garmin zones, you should be able to push into Zone 5 (above 166BPM) for the last 5km of your marathon. You may also consider to change the Garmin zone setup from MaxHR to Threshhold HR. This gave me much better Garmin-zones comparing to my lab test.

    i think my garmin heart rate zones are bs. this makes me want to get a heart rate monitor

  • @ArtOfMassDestruction
    @ArtOfMassDestruction 6 днів тому

    For most, if you take the time to do a max HR run, Garmin numbers are fine, when using a chest strap. However, as you progress you should do clinical testing. If you are running a local marathon or two, don't worry about it. If you are traveling to race and to podium, you should switch from HR zones to Lac.Threshhold zone training. These are things you will learn as you gain experience, knowledge. Andy Galpin, Peter Attia, Jason Koop and others all have put out data/ information that's easy to find, when you're ready for the next step. Still, if you just run for fun, don't complicate it, just have fun.

  • @atlosass
    @atlosass 7 днів тому

    That's really interesting. I wouldn't say I swear by what Garmin tells me, but I definitely keep an eye on those numbers. You've made me want to get some formal testing done!

  • @leescottdavis
    @leescottdavis 7 днів тому

    It's not that the Garmin is wrong. There are many different approaches to setting up zones (some have 6 or 7 zones) and you're trying to directly compare two differing philosophies and then discredit one. Of course, a lab will always be more accurate than a watch, but I think your Garmin results are pretty good. I expect to run a marathon in the mid-threshold zone but never exceed it. Garmin states that your threshold is 90% which equates to their 169. I've seen from several sources, that the ideal %MaxHR for marathon running is around 87-88%, just below the threshold. For you, that is around 164-165. Your lab test zone isn't giving you much wiggle room if 188 is correct, but their lactate testing should have factored all of this in. Good luck with your marathon! :)

      Probably, there's buses from Team Valley up to Gateshead town centre (where you could get on a Metro over to Newcastle), but on a Sunday morning they might not be too frequent. A taxi will be the stress free option.

    Thank you for this video, I think I've watched it a few times now. I've never been to Newcastle and I'm running this years event. There's a Travelodge in Gosforth, do you think that is a viable option, will there be transport from that way, or is it better to find a place in the city?

    • @racedayrunning
      @racedayrunning 4 місяці тому

      I’d imagine you’d be able to get a bus nearby as the Great North Road is a busy route into the city. Unfortunately that hotel isn’t near a Metro, the cities underground system, which is the easiest way into the city. If it's possible to cancel this hotel, I’d look at hotels near a Metro station instead or in the city. You’ll have a great time, it's a brilliant event! Good luck!

    I'm not sure it should be "controversial", it is just physics and common sense at the end of the day. I'm carrying 30+ excess pounds and in the best shape of my life for the marathon tomorrow but it'll still be a huge push to get close to 3:30/3:35 (if the stars align). Great video, to the point. I'll certainly be doing it for my next marathon as I'll be in the next age bracket so the BQ will be a bit more "in reach"..

    Had a question: As an overweight runner myself, how do you manage caloric intake for harder runs/races while maintaining a strict diet? For example, carb loading before longer runs, and post run nourishment--how does that fit in with the weight loss diet? What carbs retained their place in your weight loss journey.

    • @racedayrunning
      @racedayrunning 5 місяців тому

      Over winter I cut back my training a lot, mostly just easy runs and 5k’s so this wasn’t an issue and now I’m near my target weight I can be less strict around carbs. But it's all a case of trying stuff and finding the right balance. Good luck!

    I ran my very first marathon on Sunday in Chicago and I couldn’t have asked for a better first experience. I never hit the wall, I started fueling at mile 3. Didn’t drink Gatorade because I didn’t try it during my training. The whole time I kept drinking water. I was so tempted to eat the brownies and cookies spectators offered but I was afraid it would affect me so I only took bananas. I did slow down towards the end but I think that is understandable as your body is not used to this distance if it’s your first time. I will say that I wish I had done more strength training and hills but it was fine without because the course is mostly flat. I also tried tape during those long runs because i would always get blisters and thank goodness I did because it helped me so much on race day. I trained for a total of 20 weeks and it paid off for sure. I had a great time. It was a roller coaster of emotions! I finished after 6 hours and 2 minutes! Good luck to all of you who are training for a marathon!
