I used to have a sony 5 disk DVD player, i like it because i had a large selection of video CD's which were usually spanning 2 or more disks. it played great for many years.
Just paid $150 for the top of the line version CDP-CX555ES . Its literally brand new , bought it off a 65 year old man that literally used it a handful of times and been in storage for 10 years .....score!!!!
Help...Just bought a used CDP-CX and had a problem with the spindle not spinning. Fixed that, but I have another issue. The display that tells me the disc#, track# and so on is very dull. I can hardly read it. I noticed in this video your display is quite bright and easy to read. Can you help me with this?
what a score you really lucked out with this unit . enjoy and I am sure that you are thank you for posting this and sharing it all the best have a great weekend
Yes and it was brand new. The guy that bought it, a local realtor (still here too) bought it new from the shop I worked at. When I was doing some work for him, he was complaining about how hard it was to use to find a specific disk. (I guess he never thought to catalog the disks he loaded) and said how he wished he had a 5 disk carousel unit. I said, hey I have a 5 disk ES model that I recently rebuilt, new laser and spindle motor. He said want to trade, I said hell yes.
I have the same unit but a slightly lower end one without an external DAC. I was a little disappointed about that but the thing sounds very decent anyway and mine is pretty much in new condition. i like the way these use a very common CD mechanism as well so easily fixed. nicely engineered unit :-)
the IR replacement really helped me, my vcr remote had a really short distance as in right up to the unit I just thought it was a crap remote, so replaced the Ir from an old remote and its 10 times better now, never thought it could be the IR thats duff.
Funny to find you here Dave! Just picked up one of these units today and was looking for info on cleaning it as it is skipping a bit and found this vid. Kath wants to load all of her hundreds of 80's cds and will not get rid of them! haha. Good info on your channel. Hope all is well. If you know what may be causing the skip, pls let us know. Thx Scott . Class of 81 SDSS.
Skipping is usually caused by either a bad spindle motor or weak laser. Also check the little white gear on the sled motor for a crack. That is very common and it causes the sled motor to stick. Eventually the motor overcomes the sticking tooth and shoots forward causing the laser to overshoot and skip forward.
@@12voltvids if those two components are the issue , can the parts be sourced still? Does lubricating the sled help at all and what type of lube should be used? Thx
@@scoleman7862 lithium grease for the sled. Laser block are available as are the spindle motors. Check kpcomponents as they carry those hard to source parts. The gear may have to be salvaged or perhaps 3d printed.
@@scoleman7862 a stuck sled is a very common cause of skipping. When it gets stuck the motor works harder to move the laser and then the stuck grease breaks free and the laser jumps forward. So yes gummed up mechanism causes at least 50% problems.
Hey it is very cool I have the 400 disk one, my question is do sony make another version that can play more than 400 CD? And can I connect two of these together in sequence so I can have them play after one player is done the next one will start?
I have a Sanyo 24 disc machine that had the ability to be able to me moved whilst loaded. I used to run a mobile disco & had the top chart CD's loaded into the appropriate slots on the machine. If someone asked if I could play the current no 1 (or whatever), I just pressed '1' & it played. The carousel is shrouded so as not to spill in transit. Pioneer did a 25 disc machine with a straight rack & Kenwood did a 200 disc carousel similar to the Sony being demonstrated. Richard (UK)
@@jlatala4655 In my experience (owning several 300's), they age very well. As expected, the rubber belts eventually wear out but are not a huge deal to replace (the front door belt requires a bit more work).
Reminds me of many years ago when I was in the children's hospital and on the TV in the ward, not only did they have the Freeview channels, but they had one channel which was playing episodes of Bob the builder and Barney. After every few episodes, there would be a blue screen which would show like a representation of a container with a large stack of discs in the hundreds of so, which disc it was going to play and sometimes, a blank screen with the "Philips" name, all on a blue background(its OSD appeared to be generated by a character generator). I believe that was a rare Philips VCD changer, which the hospital also used with the TVs in some of their outpatient clinics as well. I never seen the unit itself though.
You are a great teacher. Thanks! I’ve been able to keep my Sony cdp400 going with the info you’ve provided. Unfortunately, a new challenge has happened- the shuffle all discs feature isn’t working. The player will shuffle, pick and play the first disc and track, but then stops when the song is finished. Everything else(shuffle 1 disc, continuous play) works fine, and the belts have been replaced. Any ideas what needs to be adjusted to fix that?
I think that is software issue. Maybe you can factory reset device in service mode or something like that. If you have discs in the player and it recognizes them and can so play them all, shuffle should be working then. So check this factory reset option.
I recently bought one of these at Goodwill. It skips badly so I opened it up and watched it try to play. The disc wobbles badly on the spindle. Should I just return this unit ($27), or try to fix it? I don’t know if it’s an easy or worthwhile fix.
If disk is wobbling the disk platter is probably out of adjustment so the clamp is not holding the disk correctly. They are usually pretty easy to adjust
I had one and don’t remember what happened to it, perhaps I gave it away. It was just too much for me. And I’d wind up losing all the jacket sleeves and covers to my CDs. But anyway, I would like to have installed a tiny camera inside with lights and connect the camera to my large screen TV so I can watch the disc play and load and unload on TV!! that would be the ultimate cd player jukebox visual ever!
@@12voltvids Yeah I’ve been thinking about that for years but I can’t afford to re-purchase a player, and I just don’t have the energy to do all that work. . But I hope you get to do it!👍 and I look forward to seeing it!
Great videos! I just purchased a 200 cd changer and hope to get it fixed soon. I can open the door but when i try to close it, it doesn't want to close. Sony cdp-cx210 is what i have. I also have a sony dvd 400 changer coming in the mail today!. It is going to be a very exciting! I purchased them not working of course. I cannot afford what they want it for working.
I threw this exact unit out a couple of years ago. I bought it at Circuit City for a pretty penny when it was current and new. Seeing the internal mechanisms makes me really wish I kept it.
yup they were expensive in the day, and quite collectible now. I traded a 5 disk changer for this because the guy that bought it was a dumb ass and didn't know how to work it. The 5 disk I traded for it I had been given. I won't be parting with this one.
i have a pioneer 100 disk version and i keep the lid off but thats because periodically it drops a disk and jams , but easy to sort out with the lid off all the time
Great video. After watching it I found one online and really like it so far. Is there a height adjustment on the chucking arm? When mine goes to chuck a disc, the spindle will sometimes not align with the center hole of the cd. Causes quite the mess if I don't catch it.
I have a CDP-CX250 and a CDP-CX300 I bought used. Unfortunately, the CX250 is missing some door parts (latching and unlatching parts) so the door mechanism doesn't work, I have to tape it shut but that is just a minor annoyance because when fully loaded disks are rarely changed. I just changed the belts in the CDP-CX300. I am trying to figure out how to use them to automate copying CDs to computer to use a computer as a jukebox instead.
With the assistance of your video about the 300 Disk CD Mega Changer skipping, I believe I was able to identify the skipping issue on my CDP-CX235 200 Disk changer - the gears (or at least one of them) had some damaged teeth that would sometimes not mesh. I was unable to obtain just the gear(s) that I needed, but was able to find a brand new laser transport sub-assembly for about $15. I installed it. But when I went to test it, my disc chuck would no longer grasp the discs properly, It fails to load the CD as it should. Now, thanks to THIS video, I will attempt to make the adjustment on the CD chuck. Are you able to provide any additional, valuable insight?
I have the Nakamichi rebadge of this, super cool player, got mine for 20 bucks fully working. One question, the internals and controls on my unit are identical to the sony, the buttons are all in the exact same place, I would think other than the front panel these units are identical. Would a remote for the Sony unit work on my Nakamichi you think? I'm having a hard time tracking down the Nakamichi remote.
I like to see the video on how you change the LED color on the unit do your cool White LEDs from its natural color I was hoping that you may have made a video on that is there any information that you could tell me about it
How do you fix spindle wheel noise ,plays fine to explain , a finger on top of wine glass wheel not broke I’ve tried numerous options still comes back if needs new wheel where do I get one can’t miss white wheel for disk ,certain temp related also 70 or better ,I love watching on inside to these were just coming out when I got this one didn’t see 400 disk till later the ones after even had text on it I can play it thru the stereo sounds even better use red white cable
There is a video on that project. I have another one of those x-y clock circuits that needs the d-a converter replaced that I will service once I source the parts.
LOL...I got a Sony DVP-CX850D 200 disc DVD changer at Goodwill for $40. Nothing wrong with it...works perfectly. It just needed a remote that I got off ebay. Only 200 discs, but if you use dual-layer discs and record 2 movies on each, you can double the capacity.
I have the 235. It looks pretty similar except the door slides to the side to open instead of dropping down. I bought it new probably 20 years ago and it's still going (knock on wood). Mine has the yellow light all the way in the back of the unit and it's still super bright.
I recently bought a Sony 50 disk changer, similar to this unit. I usually have it playing at random when I have friends over. What kinda bothers me is the amount of time it takes to change a disk, between each song. I was wondering, have there ever been any CD changers that loaded 2 disks at once, so there would be no large pause between the songs?
You can take two Sony 300 or 400 players and hook them together with a built in connection that allows switching from one player to the other; with either fadeout/fade in, or no delay from song to song.
Yes I know. I Do that with a PC running Zara radio. It is radio station automation software, and it builds playlists, cross fades and everything. I have the 200 disk in my living room, but on my media center where all my music is I run Zara, or Kodi.
great video! i'm a fan of these as i have a huge cd collection, but had no joy with two Sony CDP-CX230: one skips wildly on all cd's, and the other the cd won't even spin. Your video shows it's possible to get to the bottom of the problem. I've had better luck with Pioneer PD-F models, other than sometimes not catching the disc properly they've been fairly reliable and sound fine. I also tried a Kenwood DP-J, that was almost fine except it had problems reading about 1-in-10 discs and also the carousel would randomly whirl about in a confused loop, to the point only powering down several times helped. I even had a JVC XL-MC100 but they're huge and fiddly. Fascinating but frustrating machines. Once you do bag a reliable one you'll rediscover musik in ways which are somehow more enjoyable than mp3-playlists or youtube-streaming. I guess the more involved physical nature helps you psychologically connect more, plus superior audio quality (CD is only matched by WAV in terms of digital audio).
It has an optical out, but that is an easy conversion. Speaking of that, you just gave me an idea for a future video. Adding a coaxial output. (not using a converter box, actually adding a physical output. )
I have one of these that just stopped working. It will not read the CD. It spins it a few seconds then puts it back. I have done all of the basics for this issue and have come to the conclusion it is either a bad lens or a potentiometer. My problem is that I can’t figure out how to get to it? One is visible and I did adjust it, but no change. The the other one I cannot find. Can you direct me please?
HELP NEEDED: I replaced the belts on my second CX355 changer (300cd) but it didn't solve the problem of not operating. Lights and digital reads , motor hums, door will not open, delays shutting down when switched off. Any ideas?
I got a gift of 25K INR in 2002 and my wife and I went straight to the Sony showroom. I quite liked one of their 190+ CD player but we thought we will buy later as the price quoted was higher than the money we had in our pocket. We never bought it somehow.
I have a friend who has a Pioneer 100 disc changer they were trying to sell me for $50 USD. But i'm leery of them and being a pita to work on. I have a Sony 5 disc changer/burner(RCD-W500C), it works on the single disc side but the changer is flaky! it'll play fine for a few mins then just starts randomly switching songs or discs. Ive taken it apart and lubed up the tracks, cleaned the lens, and it worked better for a couple days , then back to randomness. Its never worked right since brand new, wont even burn discs. Ive read the manual a dozen times, and talked to Sony tech support, absolutely no help. One day i'll tear it all apart and get to the bottom of its issues...could just be a damn ribbon cable loose? Thanks for sharing, Dave!
Great overview! I just got this exact CD changer off eBay in supposed good working condition, and it looks nice from the outside, with no damage during shipping, but when I picked it up I heard rattling inside, so I opened it up and found 5 CDs jammed in the back, as well as a piece inside the chassis that was not attached. It is the magnet-loaded white spindle clamp for spinning chucked CDs! I popped it back on its black grip (it's very loose and wobbly, though - that's not normal, is it?) and loaded a CD and attempted to play it, but every time it tries to chuck a CD, the CD gets tossed and overshoots a little and does not get properly clamped so it cannot play it, and then when it tries to send it back to the carousel, the CD falls and gets caught crooked and gets popped into the back of the player, scratching it in the process. Is there maybe another part missing that I'm not finding, like a plastic/teflon washer that goes between the white spindle and the black spindle holder? Thank you!
Yes the magnet disk clamp is relatively loose, so that when it clamps it centers and sticks to the spindle. If it is not chucking the disk correctly there are adjustments to align the chucking arm.
Thanks a lot for the well-made video! I've got a 50-cd charger which I bought new almost 20 years ago! I love it but it's been skipping tracks and having problems chucking discs. Will try cleaning the lens and having a look inside to check the other things you mentioned in your video (belt...). Wish me luck. Any suggestions are very welcomed!
+12voltvids Thanks. I'll focus on those 2 possibilities. I forgot to mention that it doesn't always skip and someone's it'll pick up a disc w/o problems while other times it'll just keep spinning back and forth, maybe eventually chucking a disc and maybe but, eventually stopping altogether. In short, the behavior seems radical, not consistent.
Hi again, I finally found and ordered the optical drive for my CD changer but have a question I'm hoping you can answer: Is it necessary to remove the solder on the two contact points of the circuit board before installing it (the solder is supposed to protect from electrical static discharge)? Thanks!
that was nuts back then. i always wanted one, but i ended up ripping all my cd's to flac and just run a randomized playlist. figured it was easier than trying to find a single song on 300 discs worth of music. i dumped all my songs onto a 512GB microsd card and put it in my phone, and just stream raw uncompressed audio wirelessly via airplay/wifi to my apple airport express router that has an optical SPDIF out to my home theater. no way am i going back to mechanical drives.
I have all my stuff on a microSD as well. Stream it from an old phone to my arlic DAC plugged into my full tube amp driving my big sb7000 speakers. Sounds fantastic. I still have the 200 changer connected but i just stream from the phone as the sound is great and all the songs crossfade.
The same way the old wurlitzer jukebox. You print out a card with the cd number listing the cd that is in it. Higher end units accepted a keyboard and you could enter the name

Is there any info on replacing the optical pickup?
Looks like a giant coloered slinky inside 😎
Love this portable jukebox CD player .
It’s good
great vid
Help...Just bought a used CDP-CX and had a problem with the spindle not spinning. Fixed that, but I have another issue. The display that tells me the disc#, track# and so on is very dull. I can hardly read it. I noticed in this video your display is quite bright and easy to read. Can you help me with this?
Those indicator tubes do wear out. If the voltages are correct then its the tube
Thanks, are they replaceable? @@12voltvids
@@tomcampbell2642 if you can find them.
what a score you really lucked out with this unit . enjoy and I am sure that you are thank you for posting this and sharing it all the best have a great weekend
I've got a Sony mega200 and a Sony mega400 disc players linked together! Great way to keep 600 discs in a 'small' space!
How did you link them??? IS theer any special connector?
the IR replacement really helped me, my vcr remote had a really short distance as in right up to the unit I just thought it was a crap remote, so replaced the Ir from an old remote and its 10 times better now, never thought it could be the IR thats duff.
@@12voltvids Thx Dave . In your experience will greasing the sled first solve the issue or is it more likely the laser and spindle?
@@scoleman7862 a stuck sled is a very common cause of skipping. When it gets stuck the motor works harder to move the laser and then the stuck grease breaks free and the laser jumps forward. So yes gummed up mechanism causes at least 50% problems.
Hey it is very cool I have the 400 disk one, my question is do sony make another version that can play more than 400 CD? And can I connect two of these together in sequence so I can have them play after one player is done the next one will start?
The 400 was the highest capacity and yes you could connect 2 together. System would cue up second track and then cross fade between the tracks.
This is a really cool system..., but I'll stay with a 5 disc max system...
I love it. Would never trade for a 5 disk. Oh wait, I did. That's how I got it. Traded a 5 disk for it.
@@12voltvidsHow do this machines age? I mean, not just laser and belts, but arms and load disc mechanism.
There were DVD changers. Sony even had a 400 disk DVD changer at one time.
12voltvids wow! nice!
Would you recommend those Kodak Ultima CD-R 80's? Are those the Silver+Gold's or just Gold's? Great video!
No idea.
I think that is software issue. Maybe you can factory reset device in service mode or something like that. If you have discs in the player and it recognizes them and can so play them all, shuffle should be working then. So check this factory reset option.
at 4:08 why is the white Cd player wheel wobbling as its playing the cd ?? is that normal?
Aparanyly so
I recently bought one of these at Goodwill.
Great idea and i have such a camera i could put i to do just that.
@@12voltvids Yeah I’ve been thinking about that for years but I can’t afford to re-purchase a player, and I just don’t have the energy to do all that work. . But I hope you get to do it!👍 and I look forward to seeing it!
On the CDP-CX270 they put a plastic piece around the discs to keep them in place.
Can you please add a video how to replace the optical pickup?
Help i need new belts for a sony CDP CX225.Can't find where to order them form?
Dave I found and watched it. I love the machine !
This Sony 200-disc CD changer was originally intended as a background music system, right?
No
I threw this exact unit out a couple of years ago.
I won't be parting with this one.
i have a pioneer 100 disk version and i keep the lid off but thats because periodically it drops a disk and jams , but easy to sort out with the lid off all the time
I love my JVC 200 disc CD changer. The CD jacks easier to take out of the carousel.
Love these home juke noes
Great video. After watching it I found one online and really like it so far. Is there a height adjustment on the chucking arm? When mine goes to chuck a disc, the spindle will sometimes not align with the center hole of the cd. Causes quite the mess if I don't catch it.
How do you change belts on this machine? Is there a tutorial anywhere
I love my 400 CD/DVD sony player, purchased it 6 years ago from a guy that could never figure out the remote for the unit. and love it .....

Man, I want one of these units! Trying to build a 2-400 cd disc collection!
Is there a Blu-ray version of this?? What would the model number be and (shudder to ask!!) the price??
I have the Nakamichi rebadge of this, super cool player, got mine for 20 bucks fully working. One question, the internals and controls on my unit are identical to the sony, the buttons are all in the exact same place, I would think other than the front panel these units are identical. Would a remote for the Sony unit work on my Nakamichi you think? I'm having a hard time tracking down the Nakamichi remote.
I like to see the video on how you change the LED color on the unit do your cool White LEDs from its natural color I was hoping that you may have made a video on that is there any information that you could tell me about it
This definitely needs a clear case!
Just got this for $30 at a thrift today. Its awesome!

Where do you get speakers, for my 50+1
great videos!! How did you get the clock on your old scope?
There is a video on that project. I have another one of those x-y clock circuits that needs the d-a converter replaced that I will service once I source the parts.
I have this disk changer. Do you know who services them? It stopped working.
What kind of bulb is inside? Or what type of LED did you use?
hello nice video where can I find the led?
I recently bought a Sony 50 disk changer, similar to this unit. I usually have it playing at random when I have friends over. What kinda bothers me is the amount of time it takes to change a disk, between each song. I was wondering, have there ever been any CD changers that loaded 2 disks at once, so there would be no large pause between the songs?
You can take two Sony 300 or 400 players and hook them together with a built in connection that allows switching from one player to the other; with either
fadeout/fade in, or no delay from song to song.
Yes I know. I Do that with a PC running Zara radio. It is radio station automation software, and it builds playlists, cross fades and everything. I have the 200 disk in my living room, but on my media center where all my music is I run Zara, or Kodi.
are the pioneer versions similar?
great video! i'm a fan of these as i have a huge cd collection, but had no joy with two Sony CDP-CX230: one skips wildly on all cd's, and the other the cd won't even spin.
I guess the more involved physical nature helps you psychologically connect more, plus superior audio quality (CD is only matched by WAV in terms of digital audio).
so much like the old juke boxes playing 45's that they had in the pubs back when
Muito engenhoso! Amo tecnologia antiga! Um grande abraço do Brasil! ☺👏👏👏👏👏
Nice !! Doe's it Have a Coaxial Output For An External Dac ?.
It has an optical out, but that is an easy conversion. Speaking of that, you just gave me an idea for a future video. Adding a coaxial output. (not using a converter box, actually adding a physical output. )
Very Cool Idea !!
Will this play mini discs? I think they’re about three inches?
No regular cd only

Belts?
i got the same variant only its a Pioneer Pdf still got it to this day
HELP NEEDED: I replaced the belts on my second CX355 changer (300cd) but it didn't solve the problem of not operating. Lights and digital reads , motor hums, door will not open, delays shutting down when switched off. Any ideas?
how did you change the lights i have a 400 disk cd player that i wold like to change the lights because the light is bunt out
Hi D, I have just obtained another 200 CD unit and was wondering if you know what are the differences between the CDP CX200 and 225 are? Thx SC
I use to have a Sony CD player that held 50 discs. But it was overkill for my uses.
I got a gift of 25K INR in 2002 and my wife and I went straight to the Sony showroom. I quite liked one of their 190+ CD player but we thought we will buy later as the price quoted was higher than the money we had in our pocket. We never bought it somehow.
How did you change the lights ?
Opened the cabinet and put new ones in.
Skipping. Is usually the spindle motor, or a weak laser
Thanks!
Unsolder the short pads after you connect the opu to the main board
Thanks for posting
that was nuts back then. i always wanted one, but i ended up ripping all my cd's to flac and just run a randomized playlist. figured it was easier than trying to find a single song on 300 discs worth of music. i dumped all my songs onto a 512GB microsd card and put it in my phone, and just stream raw uncompressed audio wirelessly via airplay/wifi to my apple airport express router that has an optical SPDIF out to my home theater. no way am i going back to mechanical drives.
How does one identify each CD once it's loaded into the unit?
The same way the old wurlitzer jukebox. You print out a card with the cd number listing the cd that is in it. Higher end units accepted a keyboard and you could enter the name
cool! could make network data storages based on them, for example, a library🤔
