    THIS VIDEO HAS BEEN UPLOADED AGAIN DUE TO AN ERROR. Sorry to lose your great comments folks but my weight figure for the BMW Z4 M40i was way off. I somehow managed to find the gross weight rather than the curb weight. So the difference between the Z4 and the lighter Supra is 46 pounds, not 695. Which makes a lot more sense. My apologies.

    • @stephenhendricks103
      @stephenhendricks103 5 років тому

      Thanks for the clarification, Tom. Have to admit I was puzzled as to where Porsche was putting those two NFL linemen in the Z4. :) On the other hand, now I'm a bit puzzled how Porsche was able to build a roadster on the same platform that weighs only 46 lbs more than the Supra coupe.

    It's amusing to see the raft of complaints on multiple UA-cam sites from those whose concept of a Supra is based on video games and the Fast and Furious movie franchise. Just because two vehicles share a nameplate doesn't mean one is the ancestor of another. In fact, if one is looking for a spiritual ancestor of the new Supra it's the Toyota 2000GT from 1967, another curvy two seat sports car with an in-line six engine sourced from another manufacturer (Yamaha). As for the fourth generation Supra, it, too, traced its lineage to the 2000GT but even more so from the Toyota Celica, a coupe with a back seat suitable for bound and gagged children, much like the Mustang and Camaro.
    If anything, the new Supra is a purer spiritual successor to the 2000GT than the earlier Supra. And that extraordinary sports car was an unapologetic Japanese interpretation of a classic British sports car with design and engineering reminiscent of a Jaguar E-Type, a vehicle that Enzo Ferrari called "the most beautiful car ever made." (He wasn't wrong then and his comment still holds.) Tracing vehicle DNA is more complicated than looking at a nameplate.
    In short, the new Supra is not a 21st century version of a Japanese muscle car from the 1990's. Nor should it be. Ford, Chevy, and Dodge do that better than anyone. There's a reason that Toyota brought along an "86" to the Supra press party. It's a very different vehicle but it is more closely related to the new Supra than the vehicle that once bore the same name.

    33 years ago, my family took a trip from Nova Scotia to the DC area. Dad was driving on the I95 somewhere between Alexandria and Richmond. Speed limits were 55mph at the time, and Dad was doing 75. We got pulled over by a trooper. "Where y'all from?" "Canada sir." "Well in Virginia, we drive 55 in a 55, not 75 in a 55." He let Dad off with that warning. :D

    People would buy sports cars if they were priced reasonably. TOYOTA knew that very well and the reason for the partnership was to keep cost down to 50k. As said by Tada.

    • @enigmaPL
      @enigmaPL 5 років тому +1

      Toyota is literally one of the largest car companies, in the entire world. They could EASILY afford to make one themselves, at a low price, and sell at a loss AT FIRST. But given how desperate people were for a new Supra, and how desperate they were for Toyota to make something themselves, it would've paid off in the end by being a huge success like the R35 GT-R.
      Nissan was a company that has been close to bankruptcy several times, and STILL they invested money into making something special themselves, like the R35, and it paid off for them. Now they can sell basically the same car for three times the price. R35's were in the $50-60k range when they first released in 2008 or so. Now R35's, especially NISMO ones, cost nearly $150k from the dealer. Just think about how much money, the R35 alone has made for Nissan... all because Nissan put the effort in.
      Meanwhile, Toyota's philosophy to make money, was to cheap out and cost cut the most important model that everyone was waiting for.... I hope it comes back to bite them in the ass. The fact that they didn't think to include a manual transmission option for the launch of a Supra...... shows how little they cared.

    • @mrjjthor
      @mrjjthor 5 років тому

      @@enigmaPL Agreed. Toyota is getting cheap. Even their current cars have some of the cheapest interior materials which is one main reason I stopped supporting Toyota. I do like the new Supra, even though I consider it a Toyota M car, and might buy one used because I don't want to support Toyota by buying a new Supra. For $55k I'd rather spend a bit more and buy a new Camaro zl1 or slightly used Zl1 1le and wait for a supra in the used market if I still want one.

    I think this car will have it's niche following. I'm sure it is a blast to drive. And the tuning will be half the fun of owning it. I do however think the C8 Corvette changed the perception of value within the sports car industry. I think the supra will undoubtedly have a tough time convincing the mainstream crowd that it is the way to go.

    Great review and I agree there’s much more to like here than not. Even the transmission, if you have to have an auto, I’d be broad consensus among the best. I like the styling and proportions even though fake vents are a pet peeve- I guess you could consider them partially fu criminal as reserved for future use. One thing I don’t get though- is a little over 100hp/liter that impressive for a modern turbo sports car on premium fuel? It sound good and the torque figures good, but that seems a couple dozen horses light to me.

    The official German price for the A90 is 62,900 Euros, e.g. 71,173 USD at time of writing (2019jun11). I wonder why a car that is basically German and built in Austria is 30 percent more expensive in Germany than in the US. And imagine - in Austria, where the A90 is actually produced, the car costs 71,900 Euros, e.g. 81,353 USD.

    I absolutely love your videos, Tom, including this one, but I have to push back a bit on the notion that Toyota, the highest volume auto maker in the world (with expected operating profits of $23 billion this fiscal year), couldn't afford to develop their Supra successor in house. My sense is that they just wanted to keep that money for their execs and shareholders and let someone else do the development work. Sure, the performance is great and it sounds awesome, but there is no way in hell BMW reliability will hold up as well as a true Toyota's would in the long term. A few years and a bunch of miles down the road is when the realization will set in that this Supra is no Toyota.

    • @dlg5485
      @dlg5485 5 років тому +1

      @@MondernMan Again, I reject the idea that a massively profitable company can't afford to use a tiny portion of those profits to develop 1 or 2 low volume, performance oriented models that appeal to enthusiasts and show what the company is capable of. These kinds of niche products aren't about profits, they are about showing off the company's engineering and design prowess. Toyota knew it would lose money on every LFA it sold, but they made the investment anyway because the finished product showed the world what they could do, which earned them a lot of respect...and sales of their mainstream models went up. Given Toyota's stature in the industry, they are better positioned to do develop these kinds of products than most other brands.

    • @benschrader5797
      @benschrader5797 5 років тому +2

      D LG I’d like to point out that even the LF-A’s engine was outsourced to Yahama, and the car’s engineering required resources from Toyota’s F-1 team. What you and a lot of other people are asking for is Toyota to design a sports car from the ground up with resources they don’t already have, designed by personnel that don’t exist, to be built in factories that don’t have the tooling. At that point, it’s not a question of how much Toyota will lose in profits, but how much they’ll lose in shareholder confidence, and in turn the company’s market value, which are far more important than x-billions in profits.
