In this new episode of the Dog Training rEvolution Logan and his girlfriend Beverly asked for some help with their dog, Mona Lisa. She has dangerous habit of running out of the front door when it’s open. Mona Lisa and I were put to the test when cats, dogs and pedestrians attempted to derail our training session. This is honestly a life saving skill that EVERY dog needs to know. Please take the time to watch this video to make sure that you know how to teach your dog to stay when the door is open. There is nothing more important than keeping your dog out of harm’s way.

Dogs get new concepts so quickly, I used to do a similar exercise with my dog, but with an exit of fence, not the door. He understood it quickly, but he also noticed if it was an exercise or a walk and when it's a walk he gets super excited.

I’m so glad I found this video. I’m 75 and just rescued an 8 year old Pekingese Terrier cross. Totally been allowed to ruin free and disciplined with a rolled up newspaper. I’m trying reward for good behaviour. He’s a nice dog but just yesterday I chased him 2 blocks before someone stopped to help.

I have trained many dogs...had some EXPENSIVE training (for me) but puppies? We just got 2 puppies, males and they were only 5 weeks old. They are now 7 weeks old. My goodness how easy to train at this age! You don't have to un-train first! The crate is probably the best tool other than toys and their harness/leash. Crossing a threshold is easy to address starting with 'stay back' drawing the line at their crate door. No bolting. We get the leash connected and back up and they wait so well until I say 'come'...this is being translated to the front door! Truly how much fun to 'train' a puppy!! I gotta relax and stay with basics and not get too excited. We've got 'stay back, sit, look at me and come'...no way is this hard wired yet but what fun!!
My question is how do you transition from treats to asking and praise? Treats, THEY KNOW when you don't have treats and I don't ever trick them. But if I don't have treats and believe me I hide the fact when I do have treats. They are so treat oriented and I don't want them thinking food is the only 'reward'...I do not use clickers, ugh. Enough to think about without adding more confusion (mostly for me)! Love your stuff, Zak!

This video is fantastic! When I was training my dog this, he managed to get out the door before I could stop him because of a neighbours dog barking distracted him, but I got his attention before he could take more than a few steps and had him sitting and looking at me, all because of taking small steps and positive reinforcement inside next to the door. I was really pleased and surprised that he instantly stopped and paid attention to me, I gave him an extra big treat as reward :) Thank you so much for your amazing videos, they really do help!

I know I am posting quite a bit after this video came out, but wanted to comment. You mentioned adding a harness when doing this training to be sure Mona didn't break and possibly get free of her collar. I have a Golden retriever who is an escape artist when it comes to getting out of her collar, But I found a great solution - a soft nylon Martingale collar. Don't
see this mentioned very often, but feel that more folks should at least know about this option in humane collars
Keep up the great work, you videos are much appreciated
    John

Amazing! having just retrieved my beautiful little 7 month old dog from a busy road, having to stop the traffic and get the neighbours to help get him back yesterday, and having had a row with my partner for leaving the gate open, which he only did for 2 seconds, I ended up an emotional wreck, and still feel like crying when I think what could have happened to him! These are awesome videos and thanks for all you do putting them together. It gives owners the tools they need to have a well behaved dog which hopefully will help to have less of them end up in shelters. I rescued a dog who was very neglected and is scared by humans. I am having a heck of a time because she is so hyper-vigilant when outside and inside she only feels relaxed on the bed, that is her safe place. I would love to see more videos on dealing with dogs who have been abused or neglected. My Bella, they think, is ~2. I have had her 3.5 months and just 2 weeks ago I was able to get her out the door on her own and walking on a leash, she has taken to it well. Prior to that she spent her first week under my bed, the next 6 learning to trust me, the first day she got excited when I came home I was in tears, then a week or two later got her into a stroller, had to carry her still wouldn't walk on her own, to see the outside world and then gradually to walking on her own. Prior to being outside the only time she left her bed was to use the potty pads and eat which she would only do when no one was home. I should could use your help! I will never give up on her as long as it takes however some good advice from you would help.

I am definitely going to try this! Would you ever do a video on how to stop your dog from digging in the garbage? It seems like every time we aren't looking our dogs sneak into the kitchen and tear everything out of our garbage. Also, we have a dog that likes to lift his leg and pee on things in the house. He is a 3 year old puggle and he is fixed. He also barks like crazy every time someone comes in the house or walks by or anything really. He has extreme energy and is quite territorial. Any tips on these things would be awesome! Thanks!

    • @janelhagen89
      @janelhagen89 9 років тому

He definitely needs training. I just don't know where to start. It has been very cold where I live lately (about negative 20 degrees) so we really cant take him out for walks. There is no where to bring him around here to get exercise either as we live in a small rural town. In the summer he gets plenty of exercise but it doesn't seem to make a difference with his behavior. As far as his own place goes he is allowed to go in all the rooms of the house. We have been putting up gates lately to keep him out of the areas that he goes to hide and pee on things in though. The one who digs in the garbage is our 1.5 year old Irish Wolfhound. Our puggle will do that too but only if he sees our wolfhound doing it.

These are great tips. I know some stuff from the maintainence obedience stuff they taught me to do with my guide dog when I got my first guide from Guide Dog's for the Blind and I've been able to translate that into some training stuff for the dog we took in recently, but the things I know are more for maintaining an already trained dog, so it's nice to sort of fill in the gaps to help actually train him properly. :)

We have two large breed dogs that have each learned how to let themselves out. They also bolt out when we come home if the door is open. It is so frustrating, but this training method should help a lot. At least I am hopeful that it will. Thanks!!!

+Juan Coffaro I am going to look at a puppy this Wednesday, and I am SO excited about it! She would be my first dog as well, in the sense that she will be mine, and not my parents and mine as the dog we had when I was a child, so... I can't wait!
Have you gotten a dog by now, and if so what kind of dog did you end up with, what age is it, and how has it been?

Woo 991 I bought the puppy, and couldn't be more excited about it! She is a mix between a Golden Retriever and an English Bulldog and I am taking her home March 18th. She is absolutely adorable, and I chose to call her Bailey

Love this video! Stay is sort of a boring command to teach, but it's so important! I work on it all the time with my shiba (they're bolters).
I love positive reinforcement training, but I have a question about how you train your dog to not steal things off the floor (like shoes and socks). My dog does it to play and get attention and then he'll drop it because he knows that will get him a treat. I don't want to stop reinforcing the "drop it" behavior, but at the same time I think he's stealing things more and more often because he knows eventually he can give it up and get a reward. I've tried practicing "leave it" with socks and it works during training sessions, but if I'm not in the bedroom with him to say "leave it" whenever he sees a sock, he will definitely steal it.
In the meantime, we control his environment by closing doors to bedrooms and fencing off the shoes in the hallway, but one day, I would really like to be able to leave the bedroom doors open in the apartment and not have to worry about him going in and stealing all the socks.

Some of the changes seem to take a long time to become ingrained. Maybe if you did the shoe and sock training daily for a year they'd become less interesting to him?

OK, so I have a rescue dog who is 9 months old...we have been working on potty training & he's coming along nicely. I'd like to see some videos on training a dog that needs socialized...since his reaction to a lot of things is fear. Thanks!

Karen Edwards your encouragement can help a lot when socializing your dog with other dogs! Start with a friend's dog that you know is good with others and kneel down with them while they sniff and tell them they're good dogs!

Hopefully this works with my two golden doodles. I just finished chasing them across the street and dodging cars. This happens far too often and i always run out of breath and have a huge asthma attack, so this is starting to get really difficult to deal with.

Zak George you should come down and work with some of our deaf dogs it would be a great episode for your show and your the one who always says other trainers don't think outside the box this is way outside the box! anyhow we would love that have you and could probably come up with some funds to get you here!

hi zac I'm mark from Glasgow Scotland. I have a 9 week old golden Labrador puppy and I use your videos and share your enthusiasm for training my dog. she is called Nala and she is amazing to work with and she actually in about 20 minutes mastered sit, down, sit, and stand she does this with and without treats I cant believe it to be honest I would like to know how fast to take things with her as she seems to love every second with me and I her, i would like a little help with her training as I would like her to stay and when people come I would like her to sit and stay is this too soon ? She is still treated like a puppy she plays and chews etc. But that's what puppy's do. All your help is great and your videos are amazing thank you 😊🐶
