Reading some of the comments has made me want to contribute here as well. Lots of people are annoyed and outraged at the outdated ideas about weight, but as someone who grew up during the 70s, I can attest that IT WAS THIS WAY. People were OBSESSED with dieting and it became a big business. It's also a time when eating disorders first became known to the general public. Also, a few things about this movie..it is NOT a Lifetime or cable movie. This was shown on actual network TV, on ABC. I remember watching it first run and enjoying it very much. I loved Patty Duke's defiance against the shallow people around her, her sarcasm and humor. She lost weight for herself and learned about herself in the process. Conchatta Farrell was fantastic. The movie is really satire, a black comedy and a huge jab at the ridiculous obsession with weight and the shame people put on you.

I'm a healthy 67 year old woman. I remember the 70's well, that was only a few years after "Twiggy" the model from Great Britain. I never thought even back then that she looked healthy. No young person. male or female should be ridiculed for their weight, teeth, glasses, pimples etc by so called "adults." Back then, adults said whatever the hell they wanted, no matter how hurtful. I don't hear crap like that much anymore, and when I do, I will call that person out, with no mercy! I will NOT stand by and listen to garbage like that.

I wonder where some men bought their "magic mirror" ya know, the one that reflects a handsome, in shape man, the direct opposite of the way they look! I've been on some dating sites, and I've come across quite a few profiles where there's an out of shape man, with the bushy un-kempt beard that states how he wants a woman "that's in shape!" To be fair, there's probably some women that do the same.

@@mumvictoria2757 That's what a mean, nasty, controling, weak little man-child does. Boys learn very young that a girls worth is measured by her "looks." That's the first thing some "men" do is to tear down a wife, girlfriend by her "looks." Pay attention at the next family gathering, and listen to the way little girls are spoken to compared to boys. No one ever says to boys, "oh, you're so beautiful." I put a stop to that CRAP in my family!

I became anorexic, lost my periods, and basically almost wrecked my own health. It took about 3 years, and my own strength of will, to overcome it. It was long before anorexia became a household word. Karen Carpenter's death was the real catalyst I needed to make me realize.

I was that Iowa Farm Wife that was forced to make a sweet everyday. My husband told me I had to learn to make pie like his mom,so I had to go to her farm house and watch how she did it. l could never mK a perfect pie ,inorder to make him happy and he d be sweet to me. I saw my daughter become obese then when she turned 15 she told me she hated herself.I one day saw he losing weight as I weighed 120#s at 5'6"" tall. She wanted to be like me.Id make pie ,but didn t eat it. I found her losing and then when she turned 16,she was voted onto the cheerleading squad. She teamed with gals and was very happy with her appearance. She was happy and worked as an assistant store manager in Family Foods Grocery Store. She worked for her own new skinny clothes and bought her own new car. She was so sure of herself, but soon I saw a very frail daughter, say I asked her about losing too much weight. Her dad was heavy set on the farm . I couldn t under stand how he lost so much weight in a short amount of time. She wasn t eating and just working. To make a long story short, she d been throwing up het food and like a movie she saw was storing her puke in her clasey in jars. She s 53 years old and realized what I talked to her about. My conversation went sour until she saw how I kept weight off. I eat one small dessert and can quit. She saw her siblings gain and be obese. I climbed all over my three sons of whom the youngest is 47;years old and was Always trim, for my kids were athletes like me and not like their dad. I saw they d pick thin girls to be with when all of a sudden my Daughter-in-law s were getting plump then with big butts! Each time we had a holiday they d make wonderful desserts. I mentioned their weight problem, only to meet up with defiance. They all attacked me,so I thought I d show them how d I look if I carried more weight,so I ate their desserts and lots of turkey and mashed potatoes they d make. When we had the next holiday meal they commented on my weight gain. They re pleased in how hey look, obese! I don t feel good as I got sluggish and sat around crocheting, sewing and knitting slot. I looked in the mirror and like what I saw namely an obese woman. I couldn t fit in my skinny jeans,so I ve cut out my chocolate cake and fudge brownies. It s going to be a long road to be back on track again. I weighed 191#s and now I m down to 161#s. The only time I was that weight is when I was pregnant with my third child. My OBGYN told me if I didn t lose that weight my husband had a right to throw me into the street! Did he ever get the message to me! I lost all that weight after Kevin was born.! He weighed at birth:9#9oz.He was my biggest baby out of five children I carried. I felt so good about myself once again. I m fitting into my skinny jeans again. The cute is cut back on sweets and chocolate bars and eat fruit veggies and meat. I ll get there in my weight as I eat rice and cooked chicken in water and cook veggies in water. It takes alot of will power to eat a few potato chips when I watch these movies on UTUBE and I ran out of seed popcorn as I pop my own using Sunflower oil to cook it in. Popcorn makes me skinny. I need to find more.

KTen@@pinkrose5796 you mention Karen Carpenter and I cry, because I loved her singing and how her brother Richard Carpenter and her were so in time with each other. He wrote it and both played instruments She loved to drum a d she was my incentive to keep thin and beautiful,so I when I heard she died I wept for a whole bunch of time! Her song "look at the Two of Us" and "Songbird" were two of my favorites. When she sang I watched her very fervently! I too miss her. There will never be another singer like her.I through my teenage years admonished her beautiful soft voice. There ll never be another like Karen forever to come as she was one of a kind... 💝😭❤️. 💝. Will anybody ever admit one can have a mentor like The Carpenters? Karen was petite and sweet plus a cutie pie. There I m talking pie again. The last piece of pie I ate was last week when I babysat for my little grandson Arik, who is three almost four in June 2022. He is small boned and yet strong. I wrestle with all four of my little grandsons and are they ever strong muscular guys. The eldest is seven and what a wrestler he is! jayce is five soon to be six and is highly intelligent besides being tall for his age and muscular. Jareth asjked his mom,my youngest daughter if I can come over to their house. They live to all pile on top of me! Wrestle is what they want to do. I love to put them in headlocks and play the game I made up "Upside Down Clown!".When I say that they jump into the air allover me! We have fun without hurting each other. ..

Even when this TV movie first aired, I thought patty wasn’t heavy enough in the films first half. Even so ,I think the message was important. Showing the obsession to be “skinny” as illustrated by the best friend character, and the dangers of it. Eating unhealthy foods due to low self esteem ( the glove compartment candy wrappers scene). Patty is always enjoyable to watch.

This could have been a powerful tool for sending a message to all who struggle with eating disorders and weight issues. It started out in the right direction. There came an artist who finally appreciated her body as it was. Except that it was only when she lost enough weight that they finally made love. It should have been while she was heavy! Then to make it worse going forward, it was when she lost weight that she began to have control of her life, became happy and finally even got her husband back. Yes, weight loss gives confidence but acceptance and peace with your body is a better first step - don't you think? The movie didn't transmit that. Though she said she lost weight for herself, the picture was still of how happy she finally became when she was thin and "beautiful". Though her heavier friend sent some powerful messages about how great good it is to accept your bigger body, that message paled into the background while the star became successfully thin. So we STILL end up feeling there is more to be gained losing weight than being satisfied with the body we have.

The pressures for us men are at work and to make sure our families survive. Even good-looking women will leave us if the money starts to get thin and lean and lose weight. But these days the pressures on us are to be as well built as possible. Women these days complain about having overweight husbands and won't consider dating overweight guys.

I`ve worn so many discs out in my back ,and ,after scans xrays etc at 31 ,i was told my spine and joints were like that of a 60 yrold.Social media ,the media in general make us do these things to our bodies. We lose sight of what`s actually important ,lose any shred of confidence we may have had.I hope things change ,and there won`t be so much stigma about how we look/what we weigh etc.I doubt it though. The celebrities who`ve had so much plastic surgery they don`t even resemble themselves anymore. All down to pressure from their fellow peers ,the media and the public. Why do we all do this to ourselves?

Every person is forced to compete on something. Whether it was appearance or something else, women will compete with women and men will compete with men. Nowadays women will compete with men on other factors.
Appearance is only one type of competition which favours "good looking" women. But suppose it changed and women had to compete on fitness and capability. Different women would succeed. Yet the competition would remain. Just as vicious.

Being skinny started with the model Twiggy. In my day no one was heavy or fat, which is stored energy, every person seemed happy with themselves. My mom cooked our meals, never did she discuss weight gain. Being happy children was what Mom aim for us. Non of us were fat of her 9 children . Now, everyone is obsessed, men and women and sad to say even children. Why? Because everyone has an opinion on the subject and most crazy time period we live in. People dress sloppy today with a few exceptions. Just saying.

We’re all eating genetically modified food from meat to potatoes, vegetables, fruit etc. “Organic?” If you say so. This stuff just never fills ya up or keeps ya satiated. We’re dressing “sloppy” because clothes are made to fit tiny oriental women and the clothing made overseas-which is basically all of it-is sloppily made from cheap, trash fabric. I can no longer find a plain, short sleeve, crew neck T-shirt in white that isn’t translucent in ANY price range. At 5’ 5”, 130 lbs. finding clothing that fits and is opaque has become futile.

And so was everyone else. I kind of chortle when people say how much fat-shaming goes on now. No fat-shaming goes on now until you're well over 200 pounds. Bradford Dillman portrays a cad of a husband here, but he did some brilliant work as an actor. He was married for forty years to the gorgeous Suzy Parker, who was a super model before the term was even coined in the 1980's. Rosemary Murphy as the gas lighting mother was a versatile actress. From portraying the refined Southern neighbor Maudie in 1962 's To Kill A Mockingbird to the evil madam Callie in the 1972 film Walking Tall.

And it goes back to childhood, let’s celebrate with cake/cookies/ice cream/ pizza and so good= food bad no food kind of thing. I have struggled with this for almost my entire life. I’m embarrassed to say what I weigh, but I still have my hair stand up when I gain 2-3 lbs. “ Thin” has become such a norm, I wish “ healthy” was what was promoted more…….

Wow, that was probably one of the first roles Cathy Bates ever played. It is good to watch what you eat and exercise, but you don't want to get like her friend was and develop a disorder over it. I had a friend so obsessed with being thin she couldn't stop running. Eventually, she wound up having knee surgery. You don't have to starve and run marathons every day to be healthy. Just a few healthy choices here and there every day can make enough of a difference.

I love Patty Duke's acting. I was disappointed in the movie though as it starts out hailing we need to be happy, love and accept ourselves regardless of our weight. I thought, this is a good, inspirational movie. Then, after losing weight, ( smaller than at college) while on the island with the man and taking pictures and saying to her friend, I can't find clothes small enough here. I'm a size 4, I've never been so happy. Then at the reception, asks a stranger if she makes him drool. Totally changed perspective. Now that she's thin, she's found herself, happiness and a new outlook. To me that just re-enforced societies outlook

I have an eating disorder rooted in 2 different issues. The primary root cause seemed from being abused by an older sister, she was born fat and I wasn't- jealousy fuels her contempt towards me - but - we are talking about the 60s, I dont think anyone knew of such things....so that line at the end that Patty said her weight was something she could control it was all hers.....so was mine but the opposite, I repelled food, stopped eating, because majority of the abuse I received was over food, the constant belittling, berating, or the mental anguish, and on occasion physical beating from my sister, the dinner table was where we came together the most, so in my child mind I thought if I dont eat food then she would not have any cause to use it against me however the abuse was everywhere and it lasted until I was 45 years old to her 48 and her perv husband sexually assaulted me right in front of her and she blamed me, that was when I finally accepted who she was and I severed the relationship with her. But the psychological damage was there until 2014 when I am having a severe health crisis did this disorder come to light, be recognized and I had to make changes
The 2nd issue is at 27 I had my jaw surgically broken and realigned, the orthodontist made a huge mistake with teeth placement and the only way I could bite fully down was to yank the right jaw out of its joint, yes very painful, I had to turn to liquid type foods like soup, which combined with the other half of the disorder I just completely stopped eating alltogether....
It took me years to overcome both of them....always a work in progress
