+BrandonA RealNigga Did the republicans re elect a former Klansman 16 times? Did the Republicans block passage of the Civil Rights Act? Do Republicans want to prevent black kids from getting out of crappy schools and go to better schools? Do the republicans actively keep -blacks- their voting stock poor and dependant on government? Do Republicans think that black people are so pathetic that they can't even get a job without the government's help? Why do democrats only care about you when it's close to election day?
+BrandonA RealNigga So do democrats....what is your point. Voting for a man just because he is black is just as racist as voting against a man because he is black. Truth.
Elizabeth was right...for once. If Harry was a non-racist republican, people would have come out in droves demanding his resignation. But I agree with Whoopi that nothing he said should be taken as offensive. In 2018/2019, this would be headline news about racism, and says so much about how obnoxiously sensitive we have gotten in the last 10 years.
Lol your a funny one......Look at the whole picture. I dont agree with how she does some things but she loves those women she sits with. If she was truly raised with hate she wouldnt be sittin there with them
It's because Sherri is the dumbest person at that table & doesn't know what to defend or defend it unless it pertains to being black or being Christian. Whoopi & Barbara are the only level-headed people at that table & Joy is too liberal & a try-hard & do I even need to go into Elizabeth?..
The same statement made from different sides means different things. Since it came from a man who supported Barack Obama, the statement is more of a critique on society. He is recognizing the fact that since Obama doesn't fit the negative Black stereotype, he is more likely to become president than a darker man with a "black dialect" (whatever that is). If it came from a Republican that does not support Obama the statement is more of a diss saying that Obama is not that black to be considered below a white man. It means very different things depending on the side its coming from people.
Even though Hasselbeck was (and is, despite no longer being on the show) an idiot, I do have to agree with her on this. She was correct in saying that when a Democrat says such a comment, it is "easily forgiven", whereas when a Republican says it, there is a great uproar and demand for resignation. Both parties should be held equally responsible.
Ogisito Why is it that the Internet contains so many fools? Everyone is ready to insult everyone else who does not agree with them. I must assume you are a Republican, for only Republicans would be deluded in such a manner.
Larry Young LOL. You started the insult and now you are whining if someone returns the favor. No I am not a Republican. Although seeing how the Democrat party have been hijacked by the left, it is tempting.
Well I'd hate to say it but they wanted the first black president, so his race does play a big role in it. It was only awhile before this on the view that all of them said that neither he, nor Hillary, not anyone in that race was qualified to be president, and on this one she's acting like he was. Lets make it clear, they were pushing for him to be president because he would have been the first black president, or Hillary , because she'd have been the first woman president. The MEDIA particularly were pushing for election on these premise, THEM included, and ESPECIALLY Oprah.
most likely no...even though technically they are not pure... It is all opinions, but I think of anyone mixed whom would have two biracial parents or two parents of different races...I also think appearance has significance in determining who fits the "mixed" profile.
Can we look at the table please ladies and gentlemen, it’s small, imagine the Coronavirus came that time as well, they all squashed up, we didn’t they bring a big table that time, look silly, I’m just saying guys, lol 😂😈
My thing is why do white people get to set the standard for what is considered proper dialect, because I have heard some white, twangy dialect from some that is not attractice at all! Lol
True. But that's only because of our recent American history and what was considered the "norm" or common. In 50 years it wont matter as much. You wont hear that phase anymore.
Stereotypes leave such huge barriers. Black people seemed to be threatening and less desirable because of stereotypes and its really sad and domineering. But its getting better. One day perhaps this way of thinking will cease to exist.
Am I missing something? To classify 'slang' is to separate usage, whether one is formal, informal, derogatory, etc. Now it gets WORSE; if U put an ethnicity or race in front of the term 'slang,' do U reject it as being an inference or implication of superiority or inferiority? Regardless on how one is defined in appearance, do U use a race / an ethnicity in conjunction w/ slang to get a point across? And by doing so, do U not intend on displaying a superiority complex? "..doesn't sound black..?"
A lot of what Elizabeth says is emotional and she doesn't think it through because she feels her voice doesn't get heard on the show and she has to try to fire back immediately and it doesn't end well. In this case she had the research in front of her to be able to make a statement without having to get emotional, and notice that it was then Whoopi who took things out of context and ran on emotions etc. People just need to calm down and stay cool and we could debate a lot easier and factually.
Its not too bad that he said that. The guy is white and hes from an older generation. He has respect, he apologized. I can totally understand why someone would be offended. Lol I was thinking negro dialect he meant ghetto. Which is a huge stereotype and if obama was dark skin it would be different. Which is stupid but true. Its like the lighter a black person is, the less threatening they are. WOW.
Ok, I have been in debates before on the issue of racism and an odd subject came up that initially threw me off guard. Whoopi said that Barack is not considered 'light skinned' when in fact, a very large group of black people who argued that all whites are inherently racist also argued that light skinned black people weren't really black. I thought..what in the world??
The best thing for Americans to do is NOT watch this show. Most of these folks are smart enough to have a show......IGNORE them....Elizabeth made the point that a Republican could not get away with it, and she was poo poo'd.....SHE WAS ABSOLUTELY RIGHT, and Whoopie and Sherri know it........end of story......DO NOT WATCH THIS SHOW......
That's so true we can or do use it when we want to but publicly if you listened to me speak you would never hear it. There's a time & place for everything.
Considering how just about every ethnic group here has had a DIRECT impact/influence on American culture, I don't see any inconsistency with identifying with said ethnic group (or groups) while still asserting one's American identity. To say nothing of the fact that race, ethnicity, and nationality are separate entities anyway.
Meesta kevin I disagree with you, Brown is still light skin. I consider beyonce, halle, barack, and mariah carey as light skin. Whereas people on the other end of the spectrum are like Wesley snipes, or Lupita N'yongo who are dark, and their are folks in-between.
If they really wanted to disassociate themselves from being American, then wouldn't it make more sense to drop the "American" part altogether? You really seem to have the idea that you can only be one thing at a time. We aren't in the days of Ellis Island anymore. Most of us have long since realized that you don't have to lose one identity to gain another, that simultaneously adopting both an American and non-American identity is not a contradiction of any kind.
So what about when two siblings come from the same parents and one is light and the other is dark. They have the same genetic makeup. You consider one of them mixed and the other one not mixed?
Whoopi is always so apologetic to racism. That was a SUPER IGNORANT comment. I don't think it means he would have needed to step down but we can call a spade a spade.
She wasn't being apologetic, she was being rational. And disdainful of knee jerk reactions. Like yours. The term 'negro' used to be politically correct and was used by blacks and whites alike. Reid was alive during that time which suggests that it was an innocuous use of an anachronism, not a slur. I mean, it's not called the United *African-American* College fund. As far as his referring to Obama as light-skinned? An honest mistake. What he was basically saying is that he wasn't dark-skinned. And one cannot nod sagely when someone says a darker-skinned black man would have a harder time getting elected and then burn Reid in effigy for making the same observation. Oh, and the technical term for 'negro dialect' is African-American Vernacular English. Which is a real thing and many black scholars with doctorates use with pride. And a lot of people mistakenly see it as a sign of poor education. Kinda like how a lot people assume those with certain southern accents lack sophistication. Reid was making a comment on the state of our society and nothing more. If you can't see that it's because your trying not to.
America is f*cked up, I’m not from America, I was born and live in London, but I’ve been to America and that is the truth, the “ HISTORY” is bad and painful even Traumatising, using that word gets on my nerves and his remark about the skin complex, it’s stupid and sad, I’m glad Obama became the President, but I wish he done more.
@Hotlips4000isback i assume you are talking about "if harry reid was republican" statement. I would say that i would not completely disagree with her. Some people think that Republicans are racist (the whole immigration debate), homophobic (gay marriage thing), and capitalist (health care reform cost too much but a war in iraq does not?) so if a republican were to make any race related comments i would believe the media would demand for the man to step down rather than understand his comment.
This video hits on 2 things no one ever brought up: 1st: Colorism with the whole (light skinned etc.) which is dangerous 2nd: Code Switching/ Ebonics No big deal here. I do think someone probably should have taken ol dude aside and explained this to him.
OMG!!!!! Exactly! I'm sitting here watching like is NO ONE going to talk about what's really at play here? What's really the important part? This was such a superficial conversation about absolutely nothing that Harry Reid actually presented. I was disgusted with both black people on the panel.
The term 'negro' used to be politically correct and was used by blacks and whites alike. Reid was alive during that time which suggests that it was an innocuous use of an anachronism, not a slur. I am white and I will leave this to the African Americans to say whether or not they were offended. I find his choice of words "odd" and wonder if the person quoting him didn't try to use the least sensitive words in doing so. Either way...I would vote for the darkest skinned guy if he was a conservative who defended the Constitution. I am going to do so in my district when Charles Lollar takes on Steny Hoyer.
Where's the offensive part?? It is the same as saying a person who is professional has a better chance[in most cases] of succeeding if they leave the street lingo and lazy bone at home on a work day. Naturally this becomes race based but it is a true statement for the most part.
I see no difference between referring to various subgroups of Americans by their ethnic background and referring to various subgroups of Americans according to what state or region they come from (that is to say, New Yorkers have their own culture, Washingtonians have their own culture, Atlanteans have their own culture, but it's all still American).
The problem is that label everyone based upon skin color. If you have a little bit of a "permanent tan" people place a label on it. I am about 75% European (white) and 25% Native american. . . . I am as white as white can get without being albino. There are a couple friends of mine that are very light skined Americans and are about 25% AfroAmerican. . . . it can happen. And our kids might just come out looking darker then us, but that is America. We just need to start accepting it as reality.
Oh please. There are PLENTY of Americans of Irish descent who refer to themselves as Irish-American. There are plenty of Americans of Italian descent who call themselves Italian-American. Plenty of people in the Upper Midwest are of German or Scandinavian descent and many of them express pride in where they came from. So why are you singling out African-Americans?
P.S. - I'm a liberal brown-skinned black woman who knows if Bush or any right-wingers would've made this comment, this would've been blown way out of proportion! Oh, and he is light-skinned, not an insult, just a fact.
So you are saying that even someone that is 99% black and 1% white should claim to be mixed? Most likely that person will claim to be black. And skin color has nothing to do with mixture. Sisters and brothers from the same parents vary in shades all the time. But ok. As I said before, I don't like arguing on pages. If you would like to continue this conversation you can inbox me.
@JehiahZechariah I agree she puts a point, yet at the same time, Republicans got the pass card recently with Weinergate. My Senator David Vitter has had a history of prostitution since he was a representative in 1999 yet nobody asked him ONCE to resign. Weiner has a cyber history and half the nation is picketing him to resign. This just proves to me that the two-party system has dipped to being as low as the dictatorships in the MidEast and in Russia, NK and China and we need reform of politics
One last note, light skin also represents shape of the nose, hair texture, and other facial features that form the whole picture of being light skinned. Trust me, I know first hand the difference(not that I agree with these stupid practices) but I have been treated very different from a dark skinned African American with Afro-centrix features!
No, hair texture and nose shape have nothing to do with light or dark. There are plenty of "lighter skinned" Black people with wide noses and kinky hair and "darker skinned" Black people with straight hair and narrow noses. Now all of these things do contribute to the idea of privilege in the Black community, but "light skinned" has nothing to do on its own with hair texture or nose shape.
@@samueltexeira2734 not true.... East Africans are mixed with Arabs . Did you know that? North Africans are not black they are berbers. You need to learn more about Africa.
@@PsychicMedium4747 lmfao! Feeling better about myself how? I've never described complexion as being associated with any race. You're literally making things up at this point because of some internalized self-hatred. I have simply said that "light skin" has nothing to do with features or hair texture lmfao. You can call it whatever you wanna call it, but your self-hatred is showing bro lmfao.
It was an honest mistake. What he was basically saying is that he wasn't dark-skinned. And one cannot nod sagely when someone says a darker-skinned black man would have a harder time getting elected and then burn Reid in effigy for making the same observation.
I strongly disagree with Whoppie. I find the comment to be offensive & subtly racist. He knew not to say that in public because it would have offended some. For a comment to derive from your mind & out of your mouth such as the one that was made, IMO, that comes from a racist place whether a subconcious place or not. There must have been a better way for him to articulate himself without it sounding so easy, ignorant and classless. SMDH...no let's move on to more important issues shall we?
true...i don't know if you're black or white but i can speak as a black guy and say that generally blacks would not consider him "light-skinned". He's medium.
mistreated??? I was referring to the differences between biracial people and black people..we are not the same...we have different experiences...that is what I was talking about. Again, blacks do not come in all shades...MIXED people come in all shades...get it right!
Just because you're mixed doesn't necessarily mean you are light skinned. And he's black AND white. That's what he is. Mixed isn't a race. He's black and white. He's not excluded from either one. But I don't like arguing on youtube. You can have your opinion and I have mine.
..and that the fact of the matter was only blacks with strong features and dark brown to nearly black skin were considerable. Everyone else was 'light skinned' black person. These people are Alicia Keys, Beyonce, Barack, Halle Berry, and even Whoopi would be considered 'light-skinned'. It was weird and shocking to hear this but, as just an observer of a few of these debates, I really wanted to share....
harry reid was simply making a commentary on the state of american perception of african americans. so i dont understand why he should be admonished. the perception by a large portion of the population is what needs to be changed or critiqued.
Dialect: "A regional or social VARIETY of a language distinguished by pronunciation, grammar, or vocabulary, especially a variety of speech DIFFERING from the STANDARD literary language or speech pattern of the culture in which it exists." Slang: "an informal NONSTANDARD vocabulary composed typically of coinages, arbitrarily changed words, & extravagant, forced, or facetious figures of speech" SYN: "argot, cant, DIALECT, jargon, jive, language, lingo, patois, patter, shop, shoptalk, terminology"
But I think that the ability to articulate the language (be it English, French, German or whatever country you are running for pres.) is more important to whites and blacks (prejudice or not) for the country you reside in more than their skin tone. Sidney Poitier is an example. I don't care if he's dark or light black. Just the fact he's a good speaker and is smart.
0:05 Barbara didn't want to say Negro so she asked Whoopi to take lead and Whoopi's just like "No, you go ahead." Lmao
Lol, stupid, lol 🤪😂😈
I remember getting "You are so articulate though" when I was a teenager as a First Nations person.
If John McCain had said the same thing, this would have been a completely different conversation.
+frogsoda Nooooooooooo. Whoopi would understand just like with good ole Harry. ;)
+frogsoda that because republicans have racist voters

Whoopi Goldberg never disappoints. She and Charles Barkley need to have a kid.

So you can say stuff like this in private and hold a high level government office, but you can't own an NBA team.
Sherri is quick to say something when someone mentions anything about being black or anything like it.
It is because she is ignorant and was raised to hate and get revenge on other races.

Negro isn’t a bad word Whoopi? Imagine Trump said Negro.
Context counts for a lot. People seem to have forgotten that.
whats a european accent?...
im in europe , live here, and im curious to know wat a european accent is?
"...had the qualification..."
LOL LOL LOL
The term 'negro' used to be politically correct and was used by blacks and whites alike. Reid was alive during that time which suggests that it was an innocuous use of an anachronism, not a slur. I mean, it's not called the United African-American College fund.
Sherri never gets it
That one time Whoopi was spot on and the rest of that table were in la la la land..,except for Joy who was listening quietly to Whoopi.
I see no difference between referring to various subgroups of Americans by their ethnic background and referring to various subgroups of Americans according to what state or region they come from (that is to say, New Yorkers have their own culture, Washingtonians have their own culture, Atlanteans have their own culture, but it's all still American).
Put an (R) in front of Harry Reid, and Whoopi would be singing a different tune. Case closed.
What if a republican had said this.........
Did she just say: negro is not a bad word
sherri shepard needs to be quiet. what do the others have to say. the disrespect towards her boss on air, insubordinate.
@@samueltexeira2734 light skin is NOT a black trait. Light skin is a mixed race trait. Stop being in denial to feel better about yourself.
@@samueltexeira2734 Africa is a huge ass continent abundant east and North Africans are not black people. West African Bantu are black people.
Barack is not light skinned. I'm light skinned. We are both mixed but you can come out any color when you are mixed. The ignorance is killing me.
Thank you
true...i don't know if you're black or white but i can speak as a black guy and say that generally blacks would not consider him "light-skinned". He's medium.
I love how society says that we can't say "negro" but we can say "caucasian"
Black people are part of the "negroid" race.
i hate the censorship
So they can say the word nigga and give bro hugs.
mistreated???
Dialect: "A regional or social VARIETY of a language distinguished by pronunciation, grammar, or vocabulary, especially a variety of speech DIFFERING from the STANDARD literary language or speech pattern of the culture in which it exists." Slang: "an informal NONSTANDARD vocabulary composed typically of coinages, arbitrarily changed words, & extravagant, forced, or facetious figures of speech" SYN: "argot, cant, DIALECT, jargon, jive, language, lingo, patois, patter, shop, shoptalk, terminology"
im black and im not offended ,,he was stateing his opionon.. it wasnt like calling someone a the n word
