That's a few votes for a more detailed tutorial - maybe for the time being I can cover some of this during the livestreams, but I'll also think about how I can make a more in-depth tutorial 😁

@@moltenbolt As an overview, this was absolutely fantastic! I'm already having ideas for things I could try. Being what it is, Blender absolutely destroys every VTT out there in terms of immersion and setting the tone, and you're also not constrained to working within limitations (such as in Tabletop Simulator).
So dude, any tips at all you could share on how to use an awesome setup like this would be most welcome!

If you want you can just set the measurements to imperial in the world settings and get your 5-foot cubes that way.

I feel pretty dumb for not thinking of this back when I had a game going. Not going to stop me from using this trick though!
Seriously thank you. I feel this will be something to help me get better at so many things while building up some encounters, dungeon, and other such map things for either D&D or other VTT things. Animation aside, this is just good to practice while making something you like.
I'm currently looking into using Geo Nodes to have things snap to the middle of the 6x6 square grid holes. I'll let you know if I uncover anything but right now I'm just hoping for things to snap into midpoints to allow easier moving of the pieces while keeping the feeling of being on a board. (Also stretching my geo-node learning.)
While I'd love a FULL tutorial on this, I know that will be highly draining. And while your Ucupaint Tutorial drew me to your channel, I do not want to burn you out on things like that.
Deuces and all that, I'm just happy to see someone being just serious enough with blender to teach some neat things without trying to make it seem like the next big meal ticket. Hobbies can be fun without money income. (That said, if your work is great or awesome don't just give it away unless you feel the need to. But also do it for fun before money.)
Sorry, rant aside, thank you again for all this. It was so much fun to watch and learn from ya on this and the other subjects. ^^

    • @moltenbolt
      @moltenbolt  10 місяців тому +1

Hey, thank you for your kind words! Yes, for sure let me know if you get a nice Geo Nodes snapping going, that would be awesome 😁 I have also spent some time learning Geo Nodes but they are not intuitive for me - they are satisfying though. A full tutorial will probably follow at some point - I am considering covering absolute Blender basics for the next little bit heheh.
I try to keep my videos as concise as possible, while doing my best to remember the stumbling blocks I encountered while I was learning. I make these videos because I love creative things. Also people have the wildest creative ideas and I want to see them! I am entirely convinced that Blender is the best tool for unlocking someone's creative potential, with the barrier to entry being relatively low.
No worries about a rant hahah, it's my pleasure. If you want to chat some more, pop in my discord, I'm usually bootin' around somewhere: discord.gg/Pb8tzkqu

@@moltenboltI found a lot of things on Geo Nodes that can help with this idea of using Blender as a VTT. Though, if I'm honest, not in the way I was hoping but also in ways I didn't really think of until finding them.
Firstly, to address what I was aiming to do. Well, Geo Nodes can't help with that easily. BUT there is an easy way to do it.
If you turn on the Snapping tool to incremental, and when you move an object you press [SHIFT]+[Z] you'll have that object only move on the X and Y axis, now, if you wanna go a little above and beyond, and your map isn't going to have the tokens moving up and over things, you can just go into the above view to make sure the figure doesn't move on the Z axis. You can also go into the [N] menu under [Item] to lock the Z location, buuut this makes moving things not feel right as it doesn't make the object move like you pressed [SHIFT] + [Z] instead it just makes any movement you do not include the Z axis. It is weird, but that's one reason I love Blender. XD
If you want the videos that I found that could help a ton with making a blender DnD setting both in the encounter and a full-on dungeon you make on the fly. Please let me know, and I'll be happy to hop onto Discord to share them with you. ^^
After all, I'm a person who gets a little too deep into a subject. With two of the things I love, blender and VTTs, I've found some things that sound awesome with a bit of prep work, but when I stop and look over the full aim of your video... well I realize that it is a lot of work and if it is for just a one-off thing, it might not be that useful to do all that extra work.
You did say it best, the players will be happy to just see a battle mat, figures, and the scene so you don't have to make it a grand epic when it might just be a mid-boss they're up against. XD
