I have scared my elephant all these years and it now hides behind a wall and wouldn't go out of it. Instead has developed maladaptive behaviours. I'm a 34 year old voluntarily jobless and socially isolated. This elephant and the rider analogy is so good, explains why despite my knowing and wanting a better life I'm still headed in a completely unknown and uncontrolled way. Used to call it a downward spiral believed it was the shadow, which felt kind of a dark mystical knowledge about the self. But this analogy is lighter and brighter makes things more discernable in a better way. Thank you Dr for sharing this useful and well presented video.
Switch sent me to Jonathan Haidt’s work and subsequently the incredibly helpful analogy “The Elephant and the Rider.” You wouldn’t happened to have come across the origin of the analogy, would you? I’ve occasionally seen it referred to in other places but haven’t pursued its origin.
