Why I removed my K&N Cold Air intake from my 2023 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro

  • I will start this off by saying- I have used K&N systems on several vehicles over the years . I can say that they do have varying degrees of
“performance upgrades” depending on the vehicle .
Installing this 77 series caused my idol to fluctuate.
One variable may be that I now live remotely, and every time I leave the house , I have 12 kms of dusty dirt private roads to drive . Was it the factory oiling that caused the idle fluctuating, or was it dirt particles that got through the system and caused my mass air flow to be dirty??
Let me know your thoughts in the comments below !
I ended up replacing the system with the factory oem air box . I am considering the TRD CAI , let me know your thoughts on it !

When I installed it on my 2023 Tacoma Sport the same thing happened but it was because I had not placed a hose correctly and it was sucking air through there. I connected the hose well to make sure there were no leaks and the problem was fixed.

The difference I learned through the install was that the OEM set up is pulling cold air from the outside, whereas the K&N is pulling hot air from the engine bay.
Besides looking better and sounding better , the performance benefits are debateable…

the intake comes with a heat shield for that very reason, the intake still pulls air from the hole of the stock intake, you can literally hear it. @@mikealarie007

Thanks for the video. I had the same one in my 2020 Ram 1500 Hemi installed it under 1000 miles on the truck took it off after 37000 miles never had an issue. Interesting. I put a S&B CAI on my 3rd gen tacoma. I picked a paper filter for it. Before I installed it, I disconnected battery, then when I was done installing, I connected battery again and let the computer readjust to new flow. I haven't had any issues so far. My 2017 ltzs engine loses power and cuts off on me after installing my cold air intake, I’m assuming after some digging that the sensors can’t read or aren’t programmed to read that much air flow so it shuts the engine off

I had the engine come on mine, I told my mechanic about. He checked it out , took the air sensor out n cleaned it with just blowing air. Not a problem since then, he told me I sprayed to much oil. So every now n then I take the filter out n blow it out. I also put a dust cover on the filter to keep dust n water away, works like a charm.

Clean your Mass Air Flow sensor, and the throttle body with the appropriate spray cleaners. Make sure there isn't too much oil on the filter, clean it and lightly oil it. It might take the computer a little bit of time to adjust - let it idle for about 10 min after cleaning.
Worth a shot to avoid the stealership.

    • @mikealarie007
      @mikealarie007  Рік тому +3

Hi Tommy ! Ill say this , i am a long time customer of these . I like the look , sound and small hp gains .
That being said , each vehicle setup is different when we are talking oem .
Now , many vehicles just have a hole in the fender that feeds air into your filter…
But …. The stock oem system actually has a closed off unit meaning a pipe that feeds into the fender which pulls in only cold air from that engine hole. If you put in a k&n like this , you are pulling in just the air from the engine bay and that hole .
If you pop off the top of your stock airbox , you will see the pipe going into the fender pulling clean crisp air .
I believe my problem was a combination of k&n filter oil and dust on my sensor, as i do heavy driving regularly on dirt / sand roads .
I personally decided to go back stock , but will look at other options like the TRD intake which are pipe fed to the cold air hole . Just my 2 cents, cheers
