Welcome back to Scary Bear Attacks! Today’s episode takes us to the woods of Alberta, Canada, to a place aptly nicknamed Crying Canyon. It is located on the eastern slope of the Canadian Rockies and the alpine zone is guarded by granite peaks reaching almost nine thousand feet in elevation. Beneath the granite peaks are thick forests of pine, fir, and spruce trees growing so close together that they look like a beautiful green carpet when you look across the valleys. There seem to be more white-tailed deer here than humans in nearby Calgary and moose are plentiful too. If you look closely toward the mountain tops you might see mountain goats as well as Canadian Bighorn Sheep as they perform their gravity-defying ballet along the cliffs. There are cougar, black bears, and wolves here, but the grizzly bears present the most danger of all.
Thirty-two-year-old Jeremy Evans was raised in Calgary which is only a stone's throw away. He was a meat packer and an avid outdoorsman. He had been hunting and fishing nearly his entire life and spent about two months of each year in the mountains pursuing his passion. He most enjoyed bowhunting but this year he hoped to bag a big ole ram, and that is best done with a hunting rifle.
Jeremy was married to the love of his life, Joyce and they had recently welcomed their first child into their family. She was his first girlfriend and he was her first boyfriend. They had been with each other ever since they began dating in high school and were custom-made for each other. Joyce was a bonified marine biologist and well-educated. She was a city girl, mostly, and Jeremy, her perfect compliment by contrast. Joyce was still on maternity leave but passed her time while volunteering at a local non-profit when she wasn’t busy taking care of the baby and Jeremy.
Jeremy had planned on a dream sheep hunt for this fall and had put the time into researching locations and strategies to be successful. His meticulous planning for his hunts bordered on obsession, but his wife humored and supported him. Jeremy’s sheep hunt was coming up soon, and he had planned a quick scouting trip to find out just how much success awaited him in those dark forests and granite peaks.
At three AM on August seventeenth of twenty seventeen, Jeremy hopped into his pickup truck and pulled out of his driveway. He had carefully loaded his backpack and all the supplies he would need for what he planned to be a three-day back-country scouting trip for a trophy ram. Hiking into where he wanted to go would take any ordinary hunter a few days, so Jeremy sped this process up a bit by riding his mountain bike, which he placed in the bed of his truck.
Jeremy knew from prior seasons that day hunters would hit the areas nearest the roads early in the morning and that pressure would drive the sheep back to where he planned to hunt. He had planned to set up base camp about 8 miles back up the trail, hoping that the headstart on the day hunters would bring him success in his ram hunt.
After driving for three hours to the trailhead, Jeremy slipped his backpack over his shoulders and pedaled up the hill. The foliage blurred by as the excitement of fulfilling the plans and goals he had been working on started to take shape. His legs churned like pistons driving him up and down each slope of the trail.
Jeremy was so familiar with this area that he knew where the usuals would camp. He knew about 4 miles into his journey he would pass a sheepherders tent with an older gentleman sipping coffee out front, but this time the old man was missing.
Jeremy energetically zipped past a couple of men, possibly hikers, but maybe hunters doing some scouting as well. They were on foot and were taken aback a bit by seeing someone riding a mountain bike in this area. They stared at him as he passed but simply focused on finding the turn in the trail leading him to the more remote part of the canyon.
This part of the canyon is so steep and rugged that few people make it back this far. That is part of what drew Jeremy here. The ruggedness and solitude were exactly what he wanted.
He had brought along his binoculars in his backpack, as well as his bear spray and high-powered hunting rifle. He carefully navigated the crumbling slopes of a few drainages and emerged to the open face of the mountain. The trees stopped suddenly creating a panoramic view of the hillside.
Jeremy picked his way slowly around the hill, glassing for sheep as he went. It wasn’t long before his hard work paid off as a small herd of sheep appeared on the hillside opposite of him.
Jeremy leaned up on his handlebars and used them as a steady rest to get a good look at the herd.

This has to be one of the gnarliest survival stories I’ve ever heard, this man is a living legend & deserves his own movie! Knowing this was a sow & she obviously didn’t posses testicles, can anyone confirm what exactly he was grabbing onto & how that maneuver was obviously so effective!? Whatever he did sounds like it hurt far more than a couple smashed acorns, but most of all was effective twice somehow!?!?

I'm 62 and grew up in the Smokies. The "old folks" always said that if a bear (black bear) attacks you, jam your hand as far as possible down it's throat, grabbing it's tongue because (black) bears don't like being choked (who would?!) I always laughed at that "old granny's tale" before listening to this video. So glad he lived.❤

If snatched by an alligator, reach in and break the seal at the back of the throat. They breathe air just like we do, and would drown if they didn't release you. Otherwise they'll have no exploitable weakness underwater.

I learned all kinds of survival skills and my body was like nails in the Army. I had a lot of drive and determination, I could push myself past where most people could tolerate but even I wonder even in my prime, if I could pull off what Jeremy did with this attack. I believe I could probably fight off the bear, maybe, but that journey back to his car, and the fact he tried to fish while waiting for rescue is on another level from even what I was trained for. This guy was driven by a higher power or something.

First you have to pay for training, then the permitting and fees and then the purchase of the actual gun is costlier than in the US. And if you have any criminal history, forget it.

I spent many years on Kodiak Island and in Alaska's Brooks Range guiding big game hunters. I have a lot of respect for brown and grizzly bear and I assure you I've had my close calls. People seem to think "it can't happen to me". I have read so many accounts where people are attacked and their bear spray is in their pack. When I go into the wilderness I certainly don't want to kill a grizzly sow with cubs but I'm not going to let one eat me ! I keep my bear spray and my rifle handy, most times you will only have seconds to react. My best advice to anyone spending time in bear country, buy a PLB or sat-phone. Many things can and will happen, heart attack, broken ankle or bear attack, you name it.

I’ve had two encounters with grizzly bears and too many black bear encounters to remember. There was no bear spray in those times. And even though there is bear spray now days. I still haven’t gone back into grizzly country. One of the numerous black bears was with a big sow with cubs. I was harvesting firewood from out of the woods. She seemed to take issue with my chainsaw. I had a rifle but it wasn’t really very near to me. And I wouldn’t have wanted to go there anyway. So I fired up the saw and told her that this would not end well for anyone including her. Or something to that effect. And she only bluffed a charge a few times. But I’ve also had to give many black bears a good loud and stern “HEY BEAR “ which has worked every time. But a few times the same bear would come back and force another HEY BEAR. To the best of my knowledge HEY BEAR doesn’t work with grizzly’s. I think about buying some bear spray and going back into the Bob Marshal wilderness. I know that I should face the fear of another grizzly encounter. Maybe a good HEY BEAR would do the trick if I had a encounter. I live in black bear county but I use to visit grizzly county at least once a year. Or close to that. I would attach little bells to my boots. And whistle a lot. And yell HEY BEAR a bunch. But the last grizzly encounter I had really scared the crap out of me. Jeremy is very brave to go straight back out into Grizzly territory.

A testament to Jeremy's love for his wife and children! I don't know you but I am proud of you for your tenacity and willingness to survive and never give up! It's hard to say what a man would do in your situation... or be ABLE to do. Your strength and conditioning prior to the attack played a major role in your ability to survive this brutal attack but nonetheless, it should be noted that basic common sense and preparation of going into "bear country" were ignored. The Boy Scout motto, "ALWAYS be prepared" could have assisted greatly in reducing the severity of his attack and this basic rule should be instinctual to anyone venturing into the wilderness! Thank GOD you survived Jeremy... He has a plan for you and your life. You are able to share this experience and will prove to be inspirational to anyone following in your footsteps!

Why just stand there looking for a few seconds, time you hear a noise start shooting in that direction, and make sure you're gun clip holds any where 15, or more ammunition with bullets penetrating through elephant hide. Also have at least 2 knives with a blade at least 6,or 7 inches long. I would have 3 clips with 15 or more rounds, but as for me I would not have been in the wilderness because I know bears 🐻🐨, and other wild animals are in the wilderness. Why people don't think too stab a bear 🐨 are any other wild animals in their eyes,or their ears damage them in their sensitive areas. Always have a plan, and stay in survival mode. Geez! Horrific! Thank you for sharing Jeremys' story. He must be an extremely strong man, both physically and mentally.
Amazing after only 2 days out of the hospital he returned to the scene. Must have helped him to do so.
I don't know if sow couldn't find her cub or what. (Sows don't have testicles. What was Jeremy grabbing onto?) I don't know that I would have thought to put my hand in the mouth of a bear to a grab the tongue-I think not.
Jeremy must have been in absolutely perfect physical shape & condition. (I say this due to you pointing out his size & weight while wrapped around the tree. Yet the bear pulled him out with such force he was thrown 6 feet.)
I don't actually like "baby shark" but appreciate that it made Jeremy think of his daughter & want to live. (I have 10 grandchildren -5 months to 18 years-& have heard "baby shark" for several years in my defense of not liking it, anymore.)
Jeremy was positive the bear that attacked him was a sow and mother to the cub he saw running, not a boar chasing a cub as prey? It was only seconds after seeing the cub that he was attacked. Attack happened very quickly. (I am trying to understand what Jeremy was squeezing as he thought it was testicles.)
I wouldn't dare look at pictures on your patreon link-actually closed my eyes and even gasped while you described in vivid detail what happened to Jeremy.
I rather expect this will flash through my thoughts for several days. Jeremy is a remarkable and exceptional man.

Jeremy is the real beast here… I’m a lifelong hunter and outdoorsman and there’s a 0% chance I would be here today if faced with that situation. Truly amazing.

Riveting story! I almost cried listening to you describing Jeremy's bear attack and struggle to survive. God bless Jeremy and his family.

What part of a sow is that sensitive, or are they implying that it was the testicles of a boar that he was grabbing?
