- Christy Dignam performs the Eric Bogle classic, "And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" live at Gibneys of Malahide, Co. Dublin on 30th Nov 2017
Proper irish legend. RIP lad. What a chanter.
Rest in peace Christy😢
RIP
Just sensational. As an Australian Veteran, this song has always been a favourite. I have heard numerous versions from Eric Bogle, Liam Clancy to the Pogues. All these versions are fantastic but have some sort of musical accompaniment. Christy’s version is IMHO a class above as it is just his voice with no back up. I like it when he sings the full version with the last verse. Last point, there is just something special when this song is sung in an Irish accent. It to me just adds to the poignancy.
Confusing, for we of Irish extraction. We are neither Micks nor [Pods. We are Australians, too complicated.
Well said mate
Thank you, Christy Dingham, for your singing.
RIP Christy we love you it's just a shame I never got to see you live. My baby boy falls asleep ever night to your songs. God bless you Cristy and God bless 🙏💚your family & friends. What a legend
Always brings a tear to my eye.
Thanks, Christy.
I wish there was an album by Christy, Shane and Sinéad „songs of broken lives“: Green fields of France, The band played…, the old main drag, a pair of brown eyes, streets of London, … . It would be like bitter sweet tears on a string.
Christy owns this. He needs to cut a studio version of it and green fields asap.
Seconded!

I’ve been through hard times and Christy would give me inspiration to keep going. He was a beautiful soul and person. And his voice was one of a kind. RIP Christy and thank you
so bloody brilliant
What strength amazing
Now when I was a young man, I carried me pack
And I lived the free life of the rover
From the Murray's green basin to the dusty outback
Well, I waltzed my Matilda all over
Then in 1915, my country said "son
It's time you stopped rambling, there's work to be done"
So they gave me a tin hat, and they gave me a gun
And they marched me away to the war
And the band played Waltzing Matilda
As the ship pulled away from the quay
And amidst all the cheers, the flag-waving and tears
We sailed off for Gallipoli
And how well I remember that terrible day
How our blood stained the sand and the water
And of how in that hell that they called Suvla Bay
We were butchered like lambs at the slaughter
Johnny Turk, he was waiting, he'd primed himself well
He showered us with bullets and he rained us with shell
And in five minutes flat, he'd blown us all to hell
Nearly blew us right back to Australia
But the band played Waltzing Matilda
When we stopped to bury our slain
We buried ours, and the Turks buried theirs
Then we started all over again
And those that were left, well we tried to survive
In that mad world of blood, death and fire
And for ten weary weeks, I kept myself alive
Though around me the corpses piled higher
Then a big Turkish shell knocked me arse over head
And when I woke up in me hospital bed
And saw what it had done, well I wished I was dead
Never knew there was worse things than dyin'
For I'll go no more waltzing Matilda
All around the green bush far and free
To hump tent and pegs, a man needs both legs
No more waltzing Matilda for me
So they gathered the crippled, the wounded, the maimed
And they shipped us back home to Australia
The legless, the armless, the blind, the insane
Those proud wounded heroes of Suvla
And as our ship pulled into Circular Quay
I looked at the place where me legs used to be
And thanked Christ there was nobody waiting for me
To grieve, to mourn, and to pity
But the band played Waltzing Matilda
As they carried us down the gangway
But nobody cheered, they just stood and stared
Then they turned all their faces away
And so now every April, I sit on me porch
And I watch the parades pass before me
And I see my old comrades, how proudly they march
Reviving old dreams of past glories
And the old men march slowly, old bones stiff and sore
They're tired old heroes from a forgotten war
And the young people ask, "what are they marching for?"
And I ask myself the same question
But the band plays Waltzing Matilda
And the old men still answer the call
But as year follows year, more old men disappear
Someday no one will march there at all
Waltzing Matilda, Waltzing Matilda
Who'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me?
And their ghosts may be heard
As they march by that billabong
Who'll come a-waltzing Matilda with me
What a voice! Very emotive.
Christy, please record this and Green Fields in the studio!
may the Good Lord love Christy dignam
God the memories. I listened to him sing this every week at gigs for year's. Probably the only people to have been to more Aslan gigs than me were Aslan themselves.
Just amazing
Love Christy ✌
Brilliant, miss him every day, xx
Thank you 💯🥰🥰🥰
Ty for this cover, you respected the song and it was done well.
I love this, Christy nails it!
Lovely version
Sing it Christy
Perfect
What a voice i love him
Bravo!
Almost our national song! His quality and passion makes us forgive a few small mistakes. Not 1916 but 1915 & dusty outback not dirty outback. A fantastic version non the less!
RIP christy
Love ya xxx
love this
He's the pure drop.
Shot horizontally:)
Great song chronicalling Mr Churchills first of many disasters in 1917, he has 100's of 1000's of deaths on his hands of commonwealth citizens. He has 10's of 1000's of deaths on his hands in Erin. All his sins wiped away conveniently and swept under history's carpet. Never forget.
Best!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
God. Damn.
Isn’t so fabulous ❤
1915 mate Gallipoli. But you sang it well
Pretty damn good Mr Dignam.
My personal preference is for Liam Clancy's version (especially as he sings the full song) but damn good nevertheless.
Would have been more powerful on a lower key. Check out liam clancy's version. And I say this reluctantly because christy is terrific.
And the band played waltzing matilda
Billy tuohy the best ever
Hairs standing on my back
Not as good as the Liam clancy version but a close 2nd,christy is a legend
Have to have a pint and see, but your right it's close
Seht ihr das nicht ein Wunder an Musik!
Go maith
wal think thats enough said
only The Pogues for me
Shane's version is my favourite of all time , but this isn't far behind.
👆☝✋✊👋👏
wow...so very poignant
Written by a Scotsman with Irish DNA and sung by an Irishman unfortunately Christy will no longer waltz his Matilda
Rest well Christy ❤❤
Fuck sake he fairly murdered a brilliant ballad......
You could argue that😢
RIP christy
