Quick and dirty DIY dog guard

  • I'm going to participate in a dog training camp next weekend and so I needed to dog proof my car before that. I have previously built a tailgate guard ( • Building a tailgate do... ) so that I can keep the tailgate open when my dog is in the car. However, I would like to keep the dog in the boot area so I also needed a dog guard to keep the area separated from the rest of the car.
I happened to have a piece of wire mesh with almost the right size. So a bit of cutting and grinding with the angle grinder and some wire bending was all that was required in this build. Pieces are held together with zip ties. Not the prettiest solution, but it will do and didn't cost anything.

I've been making dog barriers for decades!! Easy / Cheap ?? Okay, $? Pegboard, $2 each for 2 deck spindles, $5 for 4 eye bolts from Lowes, $8 package of 4 Cargo straps, $6 hardware bolt kit from H Freight!! No bungee cords .. Barrier/s stay in position by cargo straps connected to vehicle's metal D rings tie down spots .. maybe 🤔 hour of my time !! 😁

OK. Nice. Now how about let's find some type of small rubber cap that could be put on end of each wire so they ain't so gall dang sharp???

That is one possibility. The factory edges were actually not that sharp and the other edges can also easily be rounded with a few file strokes. Rubber dips that are meant for tool handles is also a good solution. you could easily dip all of the edges and create durable and attached rubber end which doesn't fall off. If you have a 3d printer you could also easily print the end caps. But then I suggest adding a drop of glue to prevent them from falling off.

I first tried 3d printing some attaching blocks. But after a few failed prints, I just used zip ties.

What’s it called please. I just left Home Depot and all we could find was what looked like 1/8” rebar cage that’s only sold as 4’ x 8’ sheets or 100’ rolls for upwards of $300. Slightly out of my price range.

I just got chicken wire to use in my Honda CRV. I was going to put duct tape on sharp ends. I am driving across the US and will make one back area for the dog and one in the back seat for cats with an opening at the front seat middle area for a clear shower curtain door attached, to feed cats and clean the litter box. I have to also protect the windows and controls in the cat area.
