  • So I have finally made my way into the Yukon, and I'm hitting the adventures full force here. I don't have much time here unfortunately because the weather is already getting so cold, so I'm taking no time to rest. There is so so much to see here, and the locals have been great so far with tips and locations. This trip was the ultimate adventure for me because it was almost all a surprise. Coming into the Yukon, I knew a couple of people to as for locations, and one thing lead to another - I was on top of a mountain.
This video starts right at the border of BC and Yukon, and follows my trip all the way to Keno City, which is a partial ghost town with a rich mining history. Of course along the way I had to stop and see the Sign Forest in Watson Lake, but then I was right back on the road heading north.
I have a family friend in Whitehorse, that put me onto the string of ghost towns, being Mayo, Elsa and Keno. Mayo and Elsa were kind of a bust for filming, but Keno was an absolute amazing location. Once I rolled into Keno, I was picked out pretty quickly by a local. You cant walk around in a town like that too much with a big tripod and camera without getting noticed. Lucky for me, the local gentleman was only interested in teaching me some local history. We had a great little chat, and then he was back to work and I was off to find a new location that he told me about. He was telling me about an abandoned mine site up the mountain, and he told me that my bike would make it up there no problem. One thing he didn't mention, was that this mine was at the top of the mountain, and it is actually just one of many things to see up there. This is by no means a complaint, as I love exploring in the alpine. I spent the rest of the day adventuring around the mountain top, finding old cabins and mine sites. The main location - which is the one he recommended - was the 700 mine. He had described a little of what I would find, but there was so much more than I expected. This mountain is full of shacks, cabins and mine shafts, and I had a blast finding some of them. This will definitely be a location I visit again, because I had to pass by many roads and trails, each leading to a potential new adventure. My next visit will probably be several days, with some extensive miles covered.
I hope you all enjoy this first Yukon video, and the ones to come. If you do enjoy the channel, please consider supporting on Patreon. The roads have not been kind to my poor MoHo here in the north, so Ill be doing a full front end rebuild before heading south for the winter, and I'll be dipping into the Patreon account to help absorb some of that pain. I want to thank each and every Patron that contributes, or has contributed in the past. Without you guys and gals, this life would have some more stresses in it for sure. / destinationadventure

One of the things I like about your videos is the balance you strike between the serious nature the history deserves and the levity that humanity desires.

Great video. I lived in Elsa as a kid from about 1967 to 1971. My father was the mine superintendent at United
Keno Hill Mines in Elsa. It was a town of about 300 people then. I went to the Elsa school. We played hockey on the town rink even when it was minus 30. There was a ski hill up the mountain where they had installed a crude rope pull. In those days Keno was the abandoned town since the main operating mines were near Elsa and that was where UKHM had the houses for their employees. In summer we would drive up those mountain roads to the meadows around the sign-post and have snowball fights in June! It was a beautiful place to be a young kid in those days.

That was a thrill for me to get to see part of the Klondike. I only found out recently my great granduncle went to the Klondike and came back a millionaire (finally had an answer to where my odd desire to metal detect and protect came from!). Being from Norway, the weather wasn't a problem for him. He founded a town, and it's my understanding that there are still streets there that carry the names he gave them. Now I have to call my cousin and get the name of the town. He returned twice (he owned a number of rich claims apparently) returning each time a richer man. I would love to swing a coil over those tailings!
Thanks for a great virtual adventure!

As I watch your vids I can’t help but imagine the monumental task of hauling the building materials into these remote locations before it was as accessible, without modern vehicles and equipment for unloading the materials... Rae man power and horse power is a true testament to how strong-willed and motivated our forefathers were! Amazing footage and thank you fir all of the hard work you put into these adventures!

I love how in such a remote area of Canada there are artifacts of recent and long-gone visitors/residents (like the signs up in the mountains just in the middle of nowhere etc.) It shows how those who adventure/adventured into the "wild north" are a community of strangers that share a special experience together, even without knowing one another if that makes sense. Kind of like how it's cool to sign and then read visitor logs that go back decades in remote hiking cabins etc. Shared experience that spans the years.

What a thrill to turn on this video and realize you were traveling through our old stomping grounds. My hubby and I lived in Elsa when it was functioning as the United Keno Hill mine. I worked in the Elsa school for a few years while my husband was a mechanic for the mine.
We spent a lot of time walking the area around Elsa and Keno. When we were there, the 700 mine you visited still had all the abandoned barracks for the workers. We wandered through a few times. When the mine site moved and the buildings were abandoned, lots of things were left behind.
They were mining silver and lead and zinc with some gold mining being done by rivers and creeks in the valleys.
Throughout the area, we've come across a few old miners cabins, some with all the pots and pans, old cans, bed, table etc...as if the miner gave up and simply walked away.

I love this channel, I recommend to my friends especially the married ones, it's something they can watch together instead of surfing and fighting, also I send it to friends who are depressed and grieving because it's so beautiful and relaxing, but it's not only that Dustin you have a great speaking voice ,you have many talents ,the other thing is that you share everything that you do how your filming, how you're camping, how you build the rig, I tented into my 50s,, then lived self-contained , bustin my back up carryin/haulin wooden/ water and now I'm in a Senior residence in an old Victorian hotel on the 6th floor with a beautiful view , I have my own apartment,it's the best a country girl could ask for, as I recuperate and get ready to get back on the road, my dream is to take a Lewis and Clark trail across America up to British Columbia into Alaska, most people at my age want to go to Hawaii or Paris, forget Paris, Dustin you keep my dream alive! love you like a son honey,be safe out there
