GarciaLive Volume 19: October 31st, 1992 Oakland Coliseum Arena showcases Garcia’s return to the stage with the Jerry Garcia Band following a second major health crisis. The previously unreleased complete performance is mastered from John Cutler’s original soundboard recordings.
In the summer of ’92, Garcia once again found himself in a perilous position as his health deteriorated so significantly he ultimately collapsed. His reemergence here on Halloween three months later, slimmed down and in great spirits, was a real sight for sore eyes for the 17,000 in attendance at the Oakland Coliseum Arena. The setlist for the evening suggests the significance wasn’t lost on Garcia. Though hardly an uncommon opener, “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)” hints at Garcia’s gratitude for the outpouring of affection he received; while a poignant take on “The Maker” spins a tale of a “body bent and broken.” Thankfully this evening has more to it than just sentimentality - there are some exceptionally fine performances here too including a second set that’s among the decade’s best. This Halloween ’92 performance includes two performances cherry-picked for previously released compilations: “Ain’t No Bread in the Breadbox” from Shining Star and “Tangled Up in Blue” from Garcia Plays Dylan. The second set opening “Shining Star” is positively stunning with its lush harmonies and solos illustrating why Melvin Seals dubbed the group “the magic band.” Elsewhere, rollicking versions of “Lay Down Sally,” “You Never Can Tell [C’est Le Vie],” and the show closing “Werewolves of London” gave the fans plenty of opportunity to shake their bones.

Not going to comment on the performance, but this recording SOUNDS fantastic, at least on my phone (yeah, the keys are too high in the mix, but otherwise...). Might be the best-sounding live Garcia vocal I've ever heard.

I was at this show and it was amazing! For some reason I thought this show was at the Kaiser Convention Center. Maybe I'm thinking of the year before..Wasnt that Concord Pavilion??? The year after wasnt that the Grateful dead?? Maybe some sort of LSD induced Mandela Effect who knows...What I do know is this was a great Jerry band show! Thank you Jerry!

Anyone else out there (besides me) who was also here on this Spooktacular Halloween night in Oakland?
What were the best costumes that you saw?
What did you think of Vince Welnick's band's opening set?
Anyone else remember the brief yet unmistakable "Dark Star" riff Jerry teased us with during the end of the incredible, truly triumphant "Tangled Up In Blue" second set closer? (I still get a little rush of chills just thinking of that brief yet brilliant flash of musical inspiration, that song was perhaps the ultimate highlight of the 24 different JGB shows I was lucky enough to have attended)
Finally, did you notice that John Kahn didn't have his bass plugged in during "Werewolves Of London" until the song was halfway over?
    ------------------------------------------------
I was blessed with the opportunity of seeing Jerry Garcia perform live many, many times between 1987-1995, both with the Grateful Dead and the Jerry Garcia Band, but this show will always hold a special place in my heart, hearing the roar of the crowd when Jerry asked us, "So, how ya all doin'?' was something I will remember as long as I live.
Simply put, this entire evening was a defining moment, a "High Water Mark" if you will, in the last few years of Jerome John Garcia's unrivaled musical legacy, and a night that no one who was lucky enough to have attended will likely ever forget...
    Take Care,
    Matthew from Salt Lake

I was there. Frickin great night and great vibes. I remember the Republican deadhead costume getting it's share of heckling. The first chords of the show was one of the best feelings to kick off any GD or JGB show ever.

1985 and up were the most spectacular shows on the East Coast! So, you saw nothing but the best! First time I saw them was 1972. When Garcia covered Werewolves they were always GREAT shows!

I saw JGB on positivity 4th street - the Bottom Line, 1973, I was tripping & John Kahn's funny face expressions to Jerry's leads were always hesterical, that night I thought he turned into " Quick draw McGraw and galloped away on a horse 🐴 he was kissing Maria Malduer and he looked like he was smashed on horse 🐴
