  • As summer arrives so do those pesky hay fever symptoms. We'll chat about what causes hay fever, the key symptoms of hay fever, and most importantly some key tips to treat your hayfever at home.
Hay Fever - also known as allergic rhinitis - is usually worse between late March and September, especially when it's warm, humid, and windy. This makes it perfect for pollen to spread and often when the pollen count is at its highest.
Pollen is a fine powder released by plants and trees as part of their reproductive cycle. It contains proteins that can cause irritation, swelling and inflammation in your nose, eyes, throat, and sinuses (small air-filled spaces behind your cheekbones and forehead).

This can then cause people to have the following symptoms:
    Symptoms of hay fever include:
    ➤ Sneezing and coughing
➤ A runny or blocked nose
➤ Itchy, red or watery eyes
➤ Itchy throat, mouth, nose and ears
    ➤ Loss of smell
➤ Pain around your temples and forehead
    ➤ Headaches
    ➤ Earache
    ➤ Feeling tired
People who have asthma, may also get:
➤ Tight feeling in your chest
    ➤ Shortness of breath
    ➤ Wheeze and cough
Hay fever will last for weeks or months, unlike a cold, which usually goes away after 1 to 2 weeks. With a cold you may also get a temperature, while with hayfever this does not usually happen.
People can have an allergy to:
➤ Tree pollen, released during spring
➤ Grass pollen, released during the end of spring and the beginning of summer
➤ Weed pollen, released late autumn
Treatment options for Allergic Rhinitis and hay fever can include:
➤ Putting Vaseline around your nostrils to trap pollen
➤ Wraparound sunglasses to stop pollen from getting into your eyes
➤ Shower and set of clothes after coming home from outside
➤ Stay indoors whenever the pollen count is very high
➤ Keep windows and doors shut as much as possible
➤ Vacuum regularly and dust with a damp cloth
➤ Buy a pollen filter for the air vents in your car and a vacuum cleaner with a HEPA filter

People with hayfever or seasonal allergies can now check the pollen/ragweed count on weather forecast apps like Weather Underground or Weather by Tomorrow. That way, they can take adequate precautions before stepping out and avoid bad days.

I don’t like to put any harmful chemicals in my body. I use saline solution, the gel. What really works better for me are the herbal teas and pine needle tincture. Just a few drops twice a day will do it. I love indoor plants, hibiscus, plumeria, aloe Vera, I do very well, my allergies get worse when people cut the grass, the farmer cleans the cornfield, it is windy. I’m exposing myself intentionally when I go for a walk to give my body the opportunity to get used to these triggers. I continue with herbal teas.

What about countries where there is continuous snow and pollen count very low. What triggers the hay fever?

I've suffered with hay-fever all my life burning eyes runny nose but totally congested and none of the tablets seem to touch it. Wears you out after a heavy day of it. Before the electric went up I'd tumble dry clothes to stop pollen on the washing but now I'm stuck with it out on the line. I use nasal spray eye drops and fexo fenadine. But if you suffer you will suffer no matter what its simple as that sadly

I’ve started my hayfever symptoms this week. Which is very annoying because normally I’m getting my symptoms in June. And it’s April now. I’ve got fexofenadine. I’m really worried that it will last more then 2 months. And last year I’ve been taking 3/4 tablets a day because they weren’t working. So my body got immune from them ☹️

I was put on flonase everyday.
My ENT told me I should use it everyday until I die.
Is it okay to take antihistamines daily ?
I'm a student so I can't miss classes if pollen count is high

Some ENT consutlants will want you to use it all the time if it is sever.
Go with the advice of your doctor. For less sever cases I tell my pts to take a break from it every now and then to allow the nasal mucosa to recover from steroud use
