Edward (Ted) Fischer is the Director of Latin American Studies at Vanderbilt University.
Fischer studies cultural anthropology, specializing in matters of economics and moralities. Most of his fieldwork has been in Guatemala (with the Maya) but he has also worked in and written on Germany and the United States. His books include “Cultural Logics and Global Economies,” “Maya Cultural Activism,” and “Broccoli and Desire.” With Peter Benson he is now working on a project titled “Markets and Moralities.” He also has a video series out from The Teaching Co. titled “Peoples and Cultures of the World.”
He received his PhD, in anthropology at Tulane University and his undergraduate degree from University of Alabama at Birmingham after studying at Birmingham-Southern College.

Question: Where is homosexuality completely accepted?
Ted Fischer: How love is manifested varies greatly from culture to culture. And we, I think, often think of our way as the only way, or the best way, or the natural way, and yet it’s not. And this is really the power of anthropology is showing us we naturally think the way we do things is best very often. And looking around the world and saying, “Oh, among the Sambia in New Guinea they form homosexual bonds between men and also have husbands and wives.” That’s a different way of configuring families. A different way of configuring love. And it opens up the range of possibility for us to reconsider the way in which we do things. And it doesn’t mean we have to adopt somebody else's pattern, but just knowing that we construct this world in which we live, and if we want to we can change it.
There are few notable cases around the world. Among Plains Indians before contact and even shortly after contact, there was a recognized; sometimes it’s called a third gender. So men who would feel like they are truly women, and they would dress as women, and the they would take male husbands, and very much a pattern of romantic love, falling in love, marrying, not having children, of course but still living as husband and wife. So that’s one pattern that we find in a few cultures around the world. More often, interestingly, of men feeling that they should be women. A few cases that we find of women feeling that they should be men and dressing as men, but that seems to be more transgressive for cultures in some way. So that’s one pattern.
Question: Are women sexually shunned in any cultures?
Ted Fischer: Another pattern that we find, especially, in New Guinea and in the Amazon region are men forming very strong bonds between themselves, and sometimes this is sexual as well as platonic. And in these cultures a very deep suspicion of women. Women is seen polluting, as dangerous, as someone who would suck a man’s life blood out of them, and so in these cultures there’s still heterosexual bonds, and heterosexual relationships and that’s the norm. And yet it’s seen as dangerous. And men feel more comfortable in the men’s house where only men can go. And for example, among the Sambia of New Guinea that involves -- it involves sexual relations. So young boys are taught about sex by having oral sex with older men. And very -- and sometimes -- and then they’re expected then to go through this progression of having sexual relations with older men, then having sexual relationships with younger men, and then becoming heterosexual, choosing a wife and living with that wife and having children. Very often it’s hard for these men to make that transition to heterosexuality because women are scary, and they don’t want to be too polluted by women. So that’s interesting for this notion that heterosexually is natural. It probably is. I mean, most of the Sambia don’t want to continue with these homosexual relations for the rest of their lives. Some of them do and resist pairing up with a woman. But even for the ones who want to be with women, it’s a hard transition because they’ve learned a different kind of sex.

You know it's kinda strange, but I've met bisexual and even heterosexual men that see woman as a foreign creation in not just a physical but in a psychological aspect. Almost like they're from a different plant. I don't know if they had overly overbearing mothers, or past relationships that instilled this distrust and aloofness towards women.
Almost like the life Arab men live today. Where women are forbidden but yet the men build these bonds of emotion and attractiveness with other men. But once you say 'gay'! They'll bail out!

Just my opinion.
What you say is also apart of why it’s so difficult for men and women to form these natural bonds. Where bad men set standards for most men, and women who are in the mindset of that will pluck only certain men, where then other men recede back into that same mentality.
Sad innit? Women who are harmed tend to choose paths a lot of men don’t find meaningful, except for the morally degenerate. Besides that, historically women have been used, all the time. I see this difference of views in men and women to be a combination of sorts, societal, psychological, etc. Where back in ancient times a path of a woman would be a corsair, servant, house wife, bard, housekeeper, cook, etc. But in this technologically advanced and freeing world. Women don’t have to sexualize themselves, or be forced into servanthood.
It’s just that history can’t change, and the facts remain. There are easy ways of living, and difficult. What we all see as right and wrong, sex workers, etc. This is probably why monogamy’s in a decline. There are to many people with mental health issues dealing with their own issues. How does anyone expect to have a relationship with another when their cards aren’t in order, ykwim?
But let me digress in this conservative view of mine, I wouldn’t mind a relationship, platonically. Especially in this western world, it’s honestly disheartening to see so many American shows glorify sex (Euphoria i.e).
What I’ll say on rape, as a sa victim at the age of 11, is sex ed is important. Not only that but also the course our society is influencing the youth in. Which is disaster, there’s a severe porn problem with young teen boys, which imo leads to rape cases. Not only that but as a man I will say sa of men on teen boys, not just women.
There’s an example of a rat colony exceeding their environment. Inbreeding, cannibalism, and sexual promiscuity. The latter is the least of problems, as sex can be safe. It’s only that this example is one of how civilization can show a decline and decay in actual society. I think it’s important to recognize what trends people put out, and the amount of influence it attracts.
It’s scary when I see on tik tok the “wryd step bro”. As a step sibling it’s weird, and I’m sad to say it’s had a terrible impact on my siblings. Especially when in todays age as women are more free than ever, sexual conduct like OnlyFans is an easy source of income. Idk if that helps the pink tax wage gap, but shii. Wish I had a body to work with, my potato belly.
Which brings up a previous point on sexual conduct. Where now in society as women are gaining more control over their lives, there tends to be that point where some tend to become more sexual. Exhibitionist in nature almost, my only way to see that is as if they feel like a free bird exploring the world. Country girls, and those boys who have that weird growth spirt in college. Again, there’s a lot of variables to look at, can’t say one thing without mentioning the other. If this was about crimes committed I wouldn’t even begin typing. Lol

@mark anderson Mark, let's part ways amicably by sharing common ground. I'll bet you feel as I do, that women killing babies is the most vile and disgusting practice that has been demanded by women. Check out some videos about the procedure and you'll see how stomach wrenching it is, tearing babies into pieces so a woman doesn't have to deal with the fact that she was so stupid as to not consider the consequences of sexual intercourse. My belief is that life begins at the moment of conception, when that sperm hits that egg and a zygote is formed--that's the beginning of life. 6 weeks later tissue that will form the heart starts to pulsate. In cases of incest and rape, I believe a woman had no choice whether to have intercourse or if the developing child is grossly malformed and would die during gestation or at birth, I can then understand. Surely this inhumane practice warrants our attention. More than passing judgement on people. Doesn't your belief system adhere to the tenant that only 'god' can pass judgement on people?

So for me, engaging in homosexual sex would be unnatural. But for a homosexual, engaging in heterosexual sex would be unnatural. No, society is not naturally opposed to sexuality. In fact, society is naturally supportive of it. It’s religion that makes people opposed. If we go back in time 5000 years ago when homosexuality wasn’t accepted per se, it was just because people rarely engaged in homosexual behaviour since procreation was the most important thing. Homosexual behaviour didn’t even cross people’s minds, not because people were actually against it. I grew up with parents who showed me the world and let me have my own opinion. They NEVER pressured me into religion but they also never pressured me into believing everything they do. As a result, I grew up accepting everyone. All different types of people. People are conditioned into NOT accepting people. Race is a social construct for example.
Sure, gay sex can increase risk of HIV if you don’t take precautions. But everyone is aware of the risks of sex and so everyone should be taking precautions (getting tested and using protection).
No, gay people don’t become straight. There is not such thing as a gay phase. There are definitely times when people experiment with their sexuality, but that doesn’t make them gay or straight or whatever.
You know how you feel when you’re attracted to the opposite gender? That’s exactly how homosexual people feel about the same gender. You can’t change this. It’s how you’re born. Homosexuals are subject to discrimination and definitely have a harder life than heterosexuals. Homosexuality is not a choice it’s something people are born with.

The evolutionary sense of homosexuality is easily explained.
First, all animals above a certain brain size have it, because it is probably imposible to form a very complex social structure without that additional way of bonding. That would mean that the best evolutionary solution was bisexuality, which is why scientific research since Kinsey shows that the majority of the world's population has desires for both sexes, though often doesn't dare to put it to practice.
However, that would mean that pure homosexuality was a type of "failed biosexuality. But there is also the "gay uncle"-phenomenon, which can also be seen all across nature. It means that individuals that don't have offspring of their own take great care of their relatives' children and do many things that strengthen the group at large, so that ultimately more young survive in the sum.

Regarding the culturally sanctioned “third gender,” the writers of the “Alien Nation” TV series of the 1990s (a spinoff of the movie, in which an alien slave ship crashes in the Mojave desert, stranding thousands of humanoid ET slaves on Earth, and human society in LA has to find a way to assimilate them), introduced a biologically NECESSARY third gender into the aliens’ backstory.
The lead alien characters are a Tenctonese (I never read any scripts, so I’m spelling these words phonetically) couple with a teenage daughter and preteen son. Over the course of the series, in which the husband is a detective partnered with an initially anti alien human cop, the couple decide to have a third child. The story line reveals that a Tenctonese character whose behavior and personality are similar to our openly gay men is actually a Bina’am, whose mating with a couple is necessary for them to conceive. The Franciscos call on this same Bina’am who helped them to conceive their other children, to “catalyze his sperm.” The Bina’am do not marry or have romantic pairings (maybe not even with one another), and live in groups like human monks. Their role in the Tenctonese society is to help couples to conceive wanted children, also becoming like Godparents or uncles to the children as they grow up.
I figure the writing staff included some then-closeted gay men who knew about societies with gay shamans. There were probably some feminists on the writing staff also, since a fetus was transferred from the mother’s womb to the father’s marsupial-like pouch about halfway through the pregnancy, and the father then gave birth.
Even cultures with the same biology can be quite varied, so if our biology were different, we would expect to have even more variety in cultures than we have now.
The casual wrapping of pedophilia into this supposedly positive "open minded view on homosexuality" only served to totally unravel the already shaky aim of this conversation.

Societal attitudes are a huge part of a culture's sexuality.
In Greece and Rome, bisexuality, with a penchant for homosexuality or pedophilia even were fofen the "norm";.
Since it was considered totally normal - there were no traumas about having had sex with another man or an older man with a younger one. IN today's modern life we have been trained to be traumatized;.. as centuries of hopmosexual relatoniships to the ancient Greeks and Romans seemed to create no problems at all (except perhaps for rape).
Without the religoius and other constraints, most people would probably be both, depending on circumstances and context.
MORE interesting is the notion of what is "normal" or "natural".
It is more and more obvous that homosexuality exists within the animal (and even insect) kingdom... far more uniquitously than most people realize. So if one wants to use the word "natural" - it is a very fluid idea.
One example: porpoises are almost entirely homosexual, except when their female mate-for-life is in estrus. During that period, the male will copulate incessantly with her - the continuation of teh speices is of primary concern.
However, once estrus is over, the male and female separate completely, and the male goes back to his primary male sexual partner, who is his best buddy. They are even more inseparable than the male with his female mate. But they are far from monogamous, having sex with other males and even orgies.

Ok, lots of input from heteros, who only know what gay is by either a family member, friend, rumors. I know what gay is. I heard all from heteros long before there was an internet. Still see lots of comments on being gay as if those people are from very old times. I had no idea what being gay is other than my own perspective. I heard all the nasty rumors, very little compliments. I had to find out for myself. One day I ventured into the gay community. Nervous at first because of the rumors. Just as with heteros, there are not so good gay guys, and very good ones. Any sexual act not that dissimilar, oh yeah, I can know what some Hate-eros, will say, that it's not similar at all. The human body very much alike. You heteros know that. Men/women have almost all the same organs, outside much alike- head, shoulders, arms, legs, feet, posterior, etc. The differences are genitals, hormones. We all are of both sexes. Genes determine which gender to be. There are twins born, nit just of one gender, male and female twins. All of us formed of same flesh and blood. Hetero guys-half of you came from another man's penis. Ok? How do you hate that fact so much? Same for hetero females. Attraction is what's not understood. How many of us with siblings, born and raised in one family, have so various interests? One sibling will want to be of one career, the sibling interested in some other career because of something in each of us are attracted to different interests, hobbies. Same with sex attraction. Can't see why siblings have different interests, niether can sex attraction be seen.

The topic in my international relations class today was about the gender imbalance in India and China. I think that these countries are going to have to start embracing and encouraging homosexual relationships among platonic peers to reduce sexual aggravation and crime in young single men. Regardless of how "natural" you may think it is, if it was more socially acceptable for them to be partners with their same-sex colleagues they'd at least have some way to satisfy themselves in the lack of a wife.

So the answer to your question is Yes. That's my opinion, and I feel certain of it. The key is having a culture that doesn't accept homosexuality. That has shown to fuel STD. On the other hand, when you consider that Sexuality is natural, and that courtship is natural, and high dating scruples are natural, we need to allow the culture of monogamy to Grow. The flaw here is trying to claim there is no absolute truth. We all know different cultures have different moralities.
This doesn't mean they are all correct. There is one best choice for sex. It is marriage between one man and one woman.
We didn't just come about with this because of our choices and experiments. We are created beings, and the God of the Bible has given us the correct choices to make. People want there to be more choices, they want to feed their own desires. It just doesn't work as being the best choice. There are a whole bag of problems that come with the gay life; early death, suicide, loneliness, failure of long term relationships, cultural decline, and for some reason the land turns into a desert. Jesus made us to be married men and women as one flesh.
*blinks* Okay. Yes. Mental health problems are huge in the LGBT world. But it isn't *because* they are gay. Its because LGBT spend much of their lives being rejected. Imagine not ever being able to perform even the most basic of public displays of affection. When you go out on a walk with your significant other, you cannot hold their hand. You cannot hug them. You cannot kiss them. You have to keep up a veneer of just being friends. And if you let it slip, you will be judged and attacked just for being in love. You think that level of fear is healthy? And it isn't because they are gay, its because a certain subset of the population hates people for being gay. Or imagine you are forced to essentially live a life free of love growing up because you are scared of being bullied by your peers and rejected and disapproved by your parents.. All for being who you are. You think that is good for your mental health in those all so important formative years?
As for the long term relationships thing, that isn't quite true. The institution of marriage among straight people has been in a pretty steady declining slope as well. Society as a whole is just becoming far more accepting of the idea that some people can't make it work and its better they be apart. The one thing that straight couples have to keep them tied together a little more strongly than LGBT couples is the higher likelihood of having children as a binding factor. But if your relationship is only a thing because of fear of hurting the child, is it really a relationship worth parading as a success?
Every generation of every nation claims cultural decline when they look at people who are younger than them. Don't worry. The culture will be fine. Times change and life marches on.
