"See How Cawood’s Dragon Looks" - English Royalist Round

  • During the Siege of York (1644), the renowned English composer-turned-Royalist soldier William Lawes wrote the round "See How Cawood's Dragon Looks". The song vividly and defiantly recounts the violent struggle over Cawood Castle located some 10 miles south of York. Lawes, who was given a post in the King's Life Guards, fell in the disastrous rout of Royalist troops during the Battle of Rowton Heath, 1645. He was allegedly granted the title "Father of Musick" by Charles I posthumously.
