The first part of this recording is a penitent style Catholic prayer , when the first Catholics arrived at the Sheaya Epan Highlands , Altos de Chiapas , in Spanish , and converted Mayans to Catholicism , one of the first things they taught was to make prayers in penitent style , like the one we hear the woman utter in the beginning of this record , this is a style that was very common in Catholic countries of the Medieval Ages in Europe , this style of music too , is an adaptation of the Mayan chants and music they had before colonization to the Medieval music The Spanish played with lutes , violins , harps and guitars. When Spain arrived to Aztec and Mayan lands ,they were going through a 'racial purguing' , Jews and Muslims were being expelled from Spain and their Celtic heritage revived. For those who don't' know , Portugal , Spain and France was home to many Celtic tribes before The Romans conquered them , and when their arrival to their lands was imminent , the great majority of Celts crossed into what is now England , Scotland and Ireland , as a matter of fact , when The Romans arrived to what is now Wales , made the observation that the physical features of the Silures ,who lived in what is now Cardiff by then , had a striking resemblance to the Celts of Spain in everything , they way they dressed , the way they wore their hairs before they conquered them there and theoretized that their ancestors before crossing into The British Isles during the great Celtic exodus were from there . The Lusitans of Portugal and the Hispanikans of Northern Spain were among the few Celtic tribes that chose to fight The Romans and stay in their land , they lost but their name lives forever . For this reason the music of these Mayans does not contain any flamenco influences as flamenco is a mix of Celtic and Arabig rhythms that was accepted as part of the culture of Spain until much later , but instead that of the Spanish Celt revival music that was pervasive in Spain during the Middle Ages , age in which they arrived to Aztec and Mayan lands .
