The part on adusting the internal settings via the channel selector kept me from smashing my radio with a sledge hammer to ease my pain. Thank you Dave White.
Appreciate the review! Just ordered one for $135 along with a TekPower TP30SWI power supply for $77. Tying to get my base station set up. This video will help alot! Thanks!
Uniden Bearcat 980 is really hard to beat for the price. I added an Astatic D104 hand mike to boost audio a bit. I use Wilson Little Wils on both vehicles. Best value antenna I have used. It equals my old K40 but is much shorter, able to go in parking garages. I can hear the comments now, but a 36" Wilson talking to Bahamas, Fla, Canada, Tx, Maine, on SSB is no joke. Also has lower SWR than my K40. Like the 980, the low price is not a factor to me. It is the performance. You can pay much more and get more, but the Wilson and Uniden combo is a winner. Astatic 636L mike is a must for the 980. The stock mike is junk. Thanks for the video.
I have one of these 980's I like it. People say it is very clear sounding. I use it for local talk. When I want to talk skip I always go back to my Uniden grant XL. it seems to get out farther than the 980
I was only able to get my peak am power when I loosened up the limiter to hit around 8 or 9w so on mine in order to have that 1:4 carrier: peak swing, I actually had to turn the am carrier down to 2w. there are a couple of benefits to backing off on the am power including everything running cooler. I drive an RM kl503p which does not get hot running it like this, and with that amp it has the best 1:4 swing and linearity in am mode when it is set to 3. I do not expect the world out of mosfets and it doesn't bother me that I am not getting the full 300 pep out of it underdriving, but I've been getting nothing but awesome reports setup like that with a hair over 40 Watts carrier and somewhere around 175 pep
Howdy! I have this same radio and I want to run the same amp that your running, the RM KL503P Did you have to make any adjustments to your radio on the inside to be able to use the amp? I'm new the amp world and sure do need some advice from you all that have more knowledge. Any info that you can give will be greatly appreciated. Thanks
@@RogerSayers yea, i set the am dead key to 1-2 watts, ran the amp on 3 on AM, opened up the amc and alc to bring up the p.e.p power on am and ssb. i am currently removing this system bc the CPU on the 980 has bricked and it doesnt turn on anymore. but yea, low dead key is the name of the game with this amp on AM
i got a couple of cb mics that needs to switch over to a 6 pin one cb mic uses a battery anyway you could fixed it were i dont have to use a battery these 2 cb mics will go on a undien 980 ssb cb radio

Which pots did you turn to get the radio in spec? I understand these radios don't crank up to screamers, just looking to get up to spec like you described but all info I find is on the old revision.
@@DAVE_WHITE just an update my power supply voltage regulator went and over volted both the radios. Voltage went sky high when a grant was places on it and it finally took a crap. Uniden replaced it for me.

Did you try opening the uniden and removing the noise filter?? That's supposed to help tremendously
@@Mike-m2q Yes removing filter helps clarity, but can not increase volume like the Astatic mic. The stock is a good backup though. Not trash!
