After Gertie (Drew Barrymore) teaches E.T. how to talk, Elliott (Henry Thomas) learns that he wants to "phone home."

Both a classic movie for kids and a remarkable portrait of childhood, E.T. is a sci-fi adventure that captures that strange moment in youth when the world is a place of mysterious possibilities (some wonderful, some awful), and the universe seems somehow separate from the one inhabited by grown-ups. Henry Thomas plays Elliott, a young boy living with his single mother (Dee Wallace), his older brother Michael (Robert MacNaughton), and his younger sister Gertie (Drew Barrymore). Elliott often seems lonely and out of sorts, lost in his own world. One day, while looking for something in the back yard, he senses something mysterious in the woods watching him. And he's right: an alien spacecraft on a scientific mission mistakenly left behind an aging botanist who isn't sure how to get home. Eventually Elliott puts his fears aside and makes contact with the "little squashy guy," perhaps the least threatening alien invader ever to hit a movie screen. As Elliott tries to keep the alien under wraps and help him figure out a way to get home, he discovers that the creature can communicate with him telepathically. Soon they begin to learn from each other, and Elliott becomes braver and less threatened by life. E.T. rigs up a communication device from junk he finds around the house, but no one knows if he'll be rescued before a group of government scientists gets hold of him. In 2002, Steven Spielberg re-released E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial in a revised edition, with several deleted scenes restored and digitally refurbished special effects.

This was before the internet. Back then, quotes used to get passed around and mixed up all the time, so I guess sometime in between then people just started passing around a simpler version because it was cooler.

wildflower2176 Safer back then. Not to mention, when my generations parents let us go out to play, if we did something stupid and got hurt, there was no finger pointing. Now days you let your kid go out to play and they get hurt, the parent gets hauled off to jail or the kids gets removed from the home and lost in the system because our over stepping government says that parents are negligent. It's a bunch of bullshit. But part of the reason kids aren't turned loose to play in the street like we were. That and there's a lot more pedo's and crazies out there now then there was back then.

@@ConchRepublic2047 all i can say about Star Wars is that if C3P0 really did have one silver leg the whole time, then my ocd brain would not have been able to handle watching that movie, ever! My mind would have been constantly irritated by the fact that the leg wouldn't have matched the rest of his body, the same way it bothers me now when I watch it. The reason it never bothered me before is because he used to be all one color, gold.

Nothing was better than having the E.T. Lunch Box, Valentines Cards, dolls, posters, alarm clock, ect. Some of it was terrifying looking, yet great at the same time. I remember my mother had to hide the “doll”’ like thing for a few years, cause it was truly scary looking.

There are hundreds of differences in movie lines, song lyrics, history, authors names, product names that never existed, etc. We are in another dimension or parallel universe. Check out "Cern" and the Hadron Collider. They are smashing and combining atoms and particles. They are working on entering another dimension. I think they have alot to do with what is going on now.

It's not CG. It's puppetry. CG was very unsophisticated back then. Think the original Tron movie, or the hologram of Endor in Return of the Jedi. That was about as advanced as CG was in the early 80s.
CNVideos The 2002 version updated ET from puppetry to CGI a la Lucas/Star Wars. If I'm not mistaken, these clips are from the the 2002 version.

This is not the 1982 version, this is the re-release where they used CGI on all of the E.T. shots. I miss the old puppet E.T. because he added a sense of realism because the puppet was actually there. I also grew up with the original, so I miss some of those old things.
