Actually there is more info Monk like after liberation Goa remained a union territory. There was a confusion whether to add Goa into Maharashtra or whether Goa should remain a independent state So the people had to decide whether they wanted Goa as an independent state or nor so they did election and on 30 may 1987 Goa was declared as an independent state. But nevertheless Monk great video lots of love from Goa❤
Ig it's good that way being the independent, small state. Adding it to its neighboring states like maharashtra or karnataka would've ruined it's natural beauty (well it gets ruined anyways by the tourists from outer states)
My ancestors were from Bardez. They ran away from Goa under Portuguese rule and settled in Konkan. And then later came to Mumbai. I can't tell you how annoying it is to feel a cultural disconnect mainly because Portuguese rule was a cultural wipeout. Although most Goan Hindus have kept the Konkani language alive, our traditions are now a mix of Marathi. No one will ever know what the real culture of Goan Hindus was. Personally, it feels very sad to remain culturally lost, when I look at other communities like Tamilians, Bengalis, Punjabis who are so well connected to their culture.
Just try to gather Goan people having same thought process like u and know about ur history and also urge government to acknowledge ur culture and knowledge
The temples of Goa and the priest families carry on centuries-old Konkani traditions. They are the guardians of that lost culture. Usually you find that most present day descendants of those that fled Goa to Maharashtra, Karnataka, Kerala, e.g. Saraswat community, are so well to do today that they are often not interested in the old culture. However, with the rise of "Hindutva", the old culture is being revived by some active religious/cultural groups. There are very few historical Indian cultures disconnected from religion, as India has always been a very religious country often even spiritual. The same applies to Goan Hindu culture. Visit the temples of Goa, speak to the priests, join their groups, ignore the politics and focus on the old traditions, dieties, worship and customs of food and clothing. It is there and being revived gradually.
Well, as a native Goan (descended from Hindu Gaud Saraswat Brahmins), I feel some parts of our culture had to be wiped out. I'm glad the Portuguese got rid of Sati, caste discrimination, hook hanging festival, etc.
The Portuguese imposed a Christian jiziya on the Hindus of Goa, so many temples had to be relocated otherwise had to see their deities desecrated because of the Portuguese 😭

People have a lot of misconceptions about "jizya". Jizya is a type of tax which was used to collect from non-muslims in Muslim empires or lands. Now in this era, no one gives or takes jizya tho. So when one pays jizya, the Muslim resident living in the country has the responsibility to protect the non-muslim at all costs, this jizya money didn't go into the pockets of leaders like today ministers do. The money was spent on infrastructure. Jizya used to be a small amount and was not applicable on those who couldn't afford it. Even the Muslims used to give the "zakat" every month. Stop crying over that jizya was a sign of oppression. Today the tax you pay, is used to build the bungalows of ministers not the infrastructure.

They will happily welcome Portuguese invasion of Goa or any European invasion of Goa. Compared to citizens of other colonial powers, Portuguese stilll are nostalgic about their former colonies. Bro, the reason he was glorified as an example in school was purely political. The politcal party which ruled India post 1947 was Congress, who was once under leadership of Gandhi & Nehru. Naturally, for vote bank, Congress made Gandhi into a Larger than life hero. Bottomline is that Gandhi is no Mahatma. He is just one of Many contributors like Subhash Babu Bose, Sardar Patel, Bhagat Singh, Khudiram Bose, Rajguru ji, & many unsung hero's who didn't get the due credit insipte of contributing to independence due to over- glorification of Gandhi.
He is bound to get hate comments. He was a commoner, just like you and me, but with good networking skills, but waaay to overrated & packaged as a Mahatma to gain votes.
Because Gandhi was a British agent. After his failed satyagraha in South Africa, he was planted by the British to co-operate them in eliminating revolutionaries from the Indian Freedom struggle.

Why did Goa became part of India? Goa on India's western coast was freed from Portuguese rule on 19 December 1961, more than four centuries after it was colonised. The fight for freedom began in the 1940s as India inched closer to independence from British rule.
@@OkarinHououinKyouma Same thing also happened with Jews and Muslims. Many Jews came to Goa from Spain to escape persecution but soon inquisition also reached here

So that is why Portuguese navy and military troops were busy in that.... Thus india got chance to liberate goa....
Please consider as positive criticism but your analysis could have captured historical freedom movement against the Portuguese called Gomantak movement and supported by Maratha rulers and later, a large section of non Congress based movements across India. That flavour is completely missing and that is why this essay sounds like it is a compilation of few historic articles. The freedom struggle of common Goans vs elite is missed here. Because if these kingdoms didn't opt in to join India in 1947, how was using force against their explicit will justified by government and all?
By force and by diplomacy. It's a fact that no pseudo nationalist would like to accept. No king or his kingdom or anyone before the independence movement cared about a united India. Everyone just wanted to expand their kingdoms.
Wrong question Aarjav. Right one is How was inquisition by radical Catholics on Hindu Goans justified in the 1500 & 1600's? How is the use of force & advanced weapons by catholic Portuguese against peace loving Gomanatak Hindus against their explicit will justified?

Why word monk?
I agree. I have goan heritage, but staying in Karnataka currently.
U forget kerala also has connections with their cultures also ur konkani goans brahmins priests
Well, as a native Goan (descended from Hindu Gaud Saraswat Brahmins), I feel some parts of our culture had to be wiped out.
I'm glad the Portuguese got rid of Sati, caste discrimination, hook hanging festival, etc.

@@snaik9141 I take it back. You are right. But maybe you should check in details what's Catholicism, Protestantism and Judaism. Nasrani Christians. You know I hope ??? These words are known to many Goans.

Call me a communal bigot, andhbhakt, sanghi or whatever you want, it's a fact that many Goan Catholics have pro-Portuguese, and actually anti-India sentiments. They will happily welcome Portuguese invasion of Goa or any European invasion of Goa. Compared to citizens of other colonial powers, Portuguese stilll are nostalgic about their former colonies. I've seen a Portuguese person in these comments section who thinks that their former African colonies want them (Portuguese) back in their country.
I've always respected Christianity, and I've never used derogatory terms against them like "rice-bag converts, ha ha ha" or anything else like that. But these reasons, along with some other reasons makes me wonder that for how long I'll be able to have a respectable stance towards them. Why shall I respect them if they hold sentiments against my country, my culture ?
Please don't generalize that all Goan Catholics as pro-Portuguese, just because some are supporting them. May be they are fond of west and want be like western, but that doesn't make everyone like that.

Gandhi is was a great political leader but still not the best human. He was having casteist mindset, better not have him as the role model
Because Gandhi was a British agent. After his failed satyagraha in South Africa, he was planted by the British to co-operate them in eliminating revolutionaries from the Indian Freedom struggle.
