  • They just wanted to dance with each other at prom. Here's the full love story of Emma (played by Jo Ellen Pellman) and Alyssa (Ariana DeBose) from the spectacular new musical film, The Prom.
The Prom follows Dee Dee Allen (three-time Academy Award winner Meryl Streep) and Barry Glickman (Tony Award winner James Corden) who are New York City stage stars with a crisis on their hands: their expensive new Broadway show is a major flop that has suddenly flatlined their careers. Meanwhile, in small-town Indiana, high school student Emma Nolan (newcomer Jo Ellen Pellman) is experiencing a very different kind of heartbreak: despite the support of the high school principal (Keegan-Michael Key), the head of the PTA (Kerry Washington) has banned her from attending the prom with her girlfriend, Alyssa (Ariana DeBose). When Dee Dee and Barry decide that Emma's predicament is the perfect cause to help resurrect their public images, they hit the road with Angie (Academy Award winner Nicole Kidman) and Trent (Andrew Rannells), another pair of cynical actors looking for a professional lift. But when their self-absorbed celebrity activism unexpectedly backfires, the foursome find their own lives upended as they rally to give Emma a night where she can truly celebrate who she is.
Directed by Ryan Murphy, The Prom is the big-hearted film adaptation of the Tony-nominated Broadway musical. Screenplay by Bob Martin and Chad Beguelin.

Imagine if this two hour movie was actually about these two, instead of just twelve minutes in a sea of.....whatever was going on with Meryl and James? Aaaah, one can dream...

The scene where the mom tells her daughter that she doesn't want her to have a hard life and the daughter replies with, "it's already hard." Hit me like a bus, especially being a poc and a gay woman. I cried for hours.

12 minutes in a 2 hr 12 min movie, why was their love story so sidelined when it should be the main focus?? And these 12 minutes aren’t even completely about Emma and Alyssa’s love story! I really liked the movie but this was definitely the most disappointing aspect. Its almost like they didn’t want to show the Lesbians in their own movie.

For those here who don’t understand why others are complaining: the movie cut quite a bit of Emma and Alyssa’s dialogue in scenes, even verses from their songs were removed. And yes, the movie is about Emma and the Broadway actors but the movie added things to the film they added subplots for Deedee and Barry, they didn’t add more for characters like Emma, Alyssa or the other actors. Just Deedee and Barry. It feels like the filmmakers just wanted to show off that they got Meryl Streep and James Cordon to be in their movie when instead they could’ve given more focus on the lesbian couple (you know, the couple the movie was centered around).

I still don’t get why they cut Emma and Alyssa’s part in You Happened

If there is one thing I hate. It’s Alyssa’s mom seemingly getting forgiving. The ONLY good thing I take from this is that Alyssa didn’t have to go through losing a mother as well as her father. She needed reassurance more than her mother needed redemption

okay, so this is based on just seeing this video and not the movie, I kinda dislike that no time is given to Alyssa. Its about Emma, and when Alyssa brings up her mum, Emma's just like well only we matter. Good for you Emma for being ready to come out, and its good to encourage someone to take that leap too cause she can provide the strength needed. But when someone has legitimate concerns their mum might react badly... I dont think that should be swept aside. Living your authentic self is truly the best thing to do, but you have to acknowledge that for some people this comes at the expense of family. Why is this always undervalued? Especially when you're a teenager still, the consequences could be living on the streets. This is why you need longer storylines, because if these are their entire scenes then... they're barely given the time to exist as a couple. In real life you would hope that Emma would be more supportive, and they would actually go through these emotions together. But this happens in every movie, can we not have one where emotional breakthroughs happen with the other? To me the emotional weight comes from them being a lesbian couple in an underrepresented world. Do we care about them because we get to know them as a couple, no.

I love Emma and Alyssa together, and Jo Ellen and Ariana have terrific chemistry! 💘👭 My only gripe is that I wished they had more scenes, as they often felt sidelined by the zany actors' shenanigans, in their own movie.
