    Izzy does a great job at showing just how frustrated and fed up she is. You see that not only is she sad and alone but also just done with it all. All the emotions are shown throughout the song, towards the end you see her almost accept defeat. It’s so powerful. Gosh I love this song and Izzy.

      Well said!! I think Izzy is really great in putting emotions in her singing. If you've watched her other performances, she mixes her acting in her singing which makes her so in character with every song that she sings that it moves people who are watching. I love that about her performances.

    Obviously, she’s crying because it’s the last show but I also realized that this song probably hit a little harder because, after this show, she wouldn’t be Alyssa Greene anymore.

      The movie uses the soundtrack not live singing. The soundtrack can have emotion and personality of course but it needs to sound clear and easy to follow. When it's live it doesn't matter how much emotion you show, it helps convey the feeling better. Let Ariana debose perform as Alyssa on Broadway and it'll have 10x more emotion than the movie. Just compared both movie and theather song in the soundtrack and they sound similar.

    I love both renditions of Alyssa from Ariana and Izzy! And tho I love Ariana with all my literal being! I gotta say Izzy did this song justice just cuz she actually feels the pain she’s been wanting to release from the pressure her mom gives her. Ariana did great w this song as well but I didn’t feel the emotions as much.

    • @AnnangstEdits
      @AnnangstEdits  3 роки тому +22

      Same here, I think beside the fact that Izzy performed this with so much emotions, is that being a live performance added more into it. I've actually watched the movie first and I really connected to this song when Ariana sang it but then when I saw Izzy's it just hit so different. From her singing to her facial expression it was so powerful. Ariana did a great job but Izzy did justice and owned this song for me.

    • @LovelyChicable
      @LovelyChicable 3 роки тому +4

      I feel as tho...Ariana's was more reserved...yes...but to me...it feels like that stems from all the years pressure. ..you know? It seems like even when she's venting she's still trying to maintain that image of perfection, which speaks to me because it really says she doesn't know any "other" way to be...so even her delivery of the song is "neat and tidy". I thought it was brilliant way to work in the "you're someone in between"...because yes, she was venting her frustrations but she still maintained a precise, put together image because of how forced it was onto her for so many years.
      Anyway, haha, thank you for coming to my TED talk

  • @enlathestrange

    People forget directors exist and Ariana’s might be different because she was told to act it differently for the film version. Films are less dramatic than stage, the acting is less over the top.
    Having two interpretations is great because it brings people back the theatre when we’re allowed again!

    • @lila7477
      @lila7477 3 роки тому +75

      It might be just me, but I thought the wig really fits the character, and perhaps I am biased because that’s exactly what my hair looked like in high school, and I knew several people whose hair looked like this in high school.
      Alyssa has a helicopter parent who picks the way she presents herself and most likely doesn’t know how to style curls, it is also at what I call the “compromise” length, which is when high schoolers cut their hair up to their shoulders because they’re not allowed to wear it any shorter but they still want a shorter haircut.
      I felt it was a really fitting, I felt like it made her look like a teenager with no sense of self. If her hair was perfect or well styled it would feel out of place to me. But idk, that’s just the way I see it.

      @Bryce Collis I think movie Alyssa's style made sense too thought, because you can see it as just another extension of her mother trying to make her "perfect." I agree that the wig fits the character in the show, but as seen by many other comments, it does come off as a bit out of place (however, props to the people who do wigs/costumes, that's a hard job), so they couldn't do that for the movie where that would definitely receive more scrutiny.

    You know what my mother is like
    She's a complete and total control freak
    The hair has to be perfect
    The As have to be straight
    You have to join the debate club
    On that there's no debate
    You'll have Bible camp each summer
    To keep you pure and clean
    Endless rules apply when you're Alyssa Greene
    Trophies have to be first place
    Ribbons have to be blue
    There's always some competition
    Or hoops for jumping through
    Your mom's made sacrifices
    So win homecoming queen
    Cause it's do or die when you're Alyssa Greene
    And you wish there was a world
    Where you were simply free to live
    And when people criticised you
    You had no more shits to give
    And in this other lifetime
    When you tell yourself be brave you won't cave
    That's the one thing I truly crave
    But your feelings have to be phony
    Your weight has to be tracked
    If you don't like shaking pom poms
    You'd better learn to act
    Just have everything perfected by the time you reach eighteen
    Don't ask how or why when you're Alyssa Greene
    Improve all of your strong points
    And hide things that you lack
    Cause mom's convinced if you're perfect
    Your father will might come back
    You're not yourself
    You're not what she wants
    You're someone in-between
    Your whole life's a lie when you're Alyssa Greene
    I believe you have feelings for me
    But I can't do this anymore
    It hurts to much
    Is this-?
    Are you breaking up with me?
    I guess I am, yeah
    Bye
    You're not yourself
    You're not what she wants
    You're someone in-between

      In my opinion, I dont think Emma is selfish, yes what she's asking from Alyssa is not totally cool because everyone deserves and has the right to come out when they are ready but the thing is that despite of Emma's actions here in this scene, she never did once outed Alyssa. She asked her to come out but she's giving the choice to her. She protected her as much as she could too. So yeah, for me, Emma's action was reasonable and maybe it was something they needed at that time to know what they truly need.

    • @rojodiaz
      @rojodiaz 3 роки тому +2

      @@AnnangstEdits I agree that Emma did act correctly by not outing Alyssa. I have seen many cases when the person is outed by the other one. So Emma did really act correctly here. However, Emma knows who she is and what she wants, throughout the show. But Alyssa? She’s being torn apart, being pressured by both her mom and Emma. When did Emma even acknowledge Alyssa’s struggle here? She’s just like “I’m doing what I need to do for myself, whether you’re with me or not”. It is either, do it my way or we are not together. And at the end, they get back precisely because Alyssa came and supported her, defended her, stood up for her mom and came out. What did Emma do for Alyssa? Alyssa’s struggle was bigger than just putting together a prom and dancing with someone. Her struggle was actually being who she is, not being pressured by two opposing sides. If you ask me, at the end, even the mom seemed mute supportive. But Emma got back with her just because Alyssa came out. Emma was ready to leave her if things were not her way!

      I don't think she is being selfish. This situation is very sucky to be in and honestly it was probably not the right time for neither of them to be together. While Alyssa deserves time to be ready to come out, it's not fair to expect Emma to be waiting for that moment. I think tearing apart was the best choice since they were not in the same place at the time. I'm glad they worked out tho, they are adorable together

    Hm, not sure if I like this one as much as the movie version. I feel like this Alyssa was kind of aggressive in her delivery and sounded like she was yelling at Emma. (Maybe that’s the point though!) Regardless, Izzy is super talented and I’m sure that she’s amazing in person, but I definitely think I prefer Ariana for this song! Thanks for posting 😊
    EDIT: I’ve also just realized how incredibly white this show is! Emma,, Deedee, Barry, Trent, the Jazz lady, both mean girls and both of the mean girl’s boyfriends all white. Does anyone know why that is?? The only black character in the show with lines is the principal that I know of. For a show that’s all about in inclusivity, I’m so disappointed that every single main character is white. I’m really happy that the movie made the characters more diverse.

    • @thomasbaia7293
      @thomasbaia7293 3 роки тому +7

      I don’t know about Emma, or Alyssa charters. But I do know that the 4 Broadway charters where based off the 4 actors that’s play them. Those 4 actors have also been the only people to play those characters. But I do agree with you, they should have had more diversity in the cast. Also in the out of town tryout for the show in Atlanta In 2016, the actor that played the principal was also wight . So at lest although it is just barely better the Broadway production had a little more divests on the stage. I hope this helps.

    • @christy5036

      I completely agree that the broadway show is a little lacking in lead diversity, but I just wanted to say that Isabelle McCalla (Alyssa Greene) and Kalyn West (Shelby, one of the mean girls) are both mixed/poc! so not all of the leads are white!

    • @saynomore6958

      Isabella McCalla isn't white, Wtf at least research about the actors before talking about them. Also, in the atlanta version, the other mean girls' boyfriend was black but he probably ended up in another show and instead had the other actor fill his role. There were a lot of people in the original ensemble that ended up in other shows, like in mean girls for example.
      Anyway, this was the closing show so Isabella was probably extra emotional.
