    Funnily enough, we actually DID get an actual horror themed Spider-Man film. It was a short fan film released earlier this year called "The Spider" starring Chandler Riggs (yes, Carl from The Walking Dead) as Peter. Honestly, I think it's pretty solid all things considered.
    Also, the 70s Hulk show gave us 2 iconic things that became a staple of the Hulk mythos:
    1) Banner's eyes changing color as a sign of the transformation.
    2) The immortal line, "Please don't make me angry. You wouldn't like me when I'm angry."

      @@MattsMediaReviews I'm a huge Hulk fan, and I love the TV series. I don't mind changes in an adaptation as long as you keep the spirit of the source material, which I believe they did well.
      Plus, it's cool how Al Ewing took some stuff from the show and put it into his Immortal Hulk run, namely the sci-fi horror tone and a reporter character named McGee.

      I remember a B-movie company (I want to say Full Moon but don't quote me on that) that sort of did a Spider-man horror movie in the early 00's that sounds like this version of the spider man horror movie
      in it a comic book fan working for a company researching genetic engineering with spiders injects himself to become their version of Spiderman and slowly turns into a spider with his webs coming out of his abdomen.

    Story : my dad was born in the 70s and hes a marvel veteran nerd and he absolutely loved the incredible hulk tv series growing up, ive seen him watching the original episodes on the sci-fi channel a few times, anyway, a few years ago i set myself a goal, find him the entire tv series on an official dvd as a christmas present, turns out it was pretty easy and i got it from amazon, he called me on christmas afternoon, and was basically speechless, tbh i thought it was gonna be difficult because as far as i know, the 70s spiderman tv series has never been released on an official dvd since ive looked multiple times, btw thanks for explaining that she hulk project, ive seen those images of that cancelled she hulk before but i always assumed that was from the hulk tv series, nevee knew it was one of marvels massive list of cancelled projects.

      @RowdyRodimus 2 місяці тому +5

      I wonder if that's why they had Byrne do Jean's first (of many) resurrections in an issue of Fantastic Four? I always thought it was odd to do it there.

    • @tomemyscoobies
      @tomemyscoobies Місяць тому

      @@RowdyRodimus You're right! John Byrne resurrected Jean because Chris Claremont refused to. He pitched an entirely new idea to Jim Shooter where Jean's sister joined X-Factor instead, but Shooter said he would do it anyway. So Byrne brought her back, and Louise Simonson (Claremont's editor and good friend) agreed to write X-Factor and give Claremont's stories as much respect as she could.

    The Incredible Hulk TV Series was so damn influential, Al Ewing used it as a basis for his Immortal Hulk run back in 2018-2021
    In a way, Immortal Hulk vindicated the 70’s Hulk TV Series by really getting why the show was great while doing its own thing throughout the rest of its length

    Kenneth Johnson’s disrespect for the source material is a big reason why I can’t get into the 70s Hulk show. He acts as though none of Bruce Banner’s personal struggles and inner turmoil were ever in the comic books and that HE was the one who introduced those themes

    • @MattsMediaReviews
      @MattsMediaReviews  2 місяці тому +8

      Oh yeah, totally. It’s always been a really irritating, pretentious stance. And you’re so right; he did NOT introduce those elements to the mythos by any means.

    • @AkiraLionPilot
      @AkiraLionPilot 2 місяці тому +3

      @@MattsMediaReviews exactly! Even the people who produced other superhero shows around that time did at least a tiny amount of research on the sources they were adapting. If he had opened just one comic he would’ve seen that the Hulk was already a character with deep seated trauma and personal issues. To be completely fair though, at least he didn’t do what Cannon Films almost did with Spidey

    • @MattsMediaReviews
      @MattsMediaReviews  2 місяці тому +4

      @@AkiraLionPilot oh absolutely. I guess Peter David explored it a lot more after this shows’ release, but, there was still plenty of stuff to draw from. Also, I seem to remember an interview where Kenneth Johnson talked about wanting the show to feel more like “Faust” and “The Strange Case of Jekyll and Hyde” instead of its comic book origins. I find that funny for a couple reasons.
      The Hulk has very obviously been influenced by Jekyll and Hyde since the beginning, but- Jekyll and Hyde was considered trashy upon its initial release. A “dime store” novel.
      Also, these are like the most famous horror-thriller novels ever, outside of like Dracula and Frankenstein. It just feels so pretentious.

    • @henrygarcia39
      @henrygarcia39 2 місяці тому +3

      Even though I love the show, I mostly agree. I think he might have done Banner traveling and helping people first but the internal struggle, man on the run, and Jekyll and Hyde themes were there from the beginning. What makes it worse is that he pretty much directed superhero shows before Hulk.

    She Hulk used to be a model for year before she switched to law school. The reason for this was because she was a country girl who came from the middle of nowhere and once she became She Hulk she took the first job offer she could get to make ends meet. Eventually she used to design her own clothes, hence why Nielsen has her own clothes. She Hulk didn't fully embrace her job as a lawyer until she met Louise Grant AKA Blonde Phantom during the Sensational She Hulk run in 1989 since by that point she began to break the fourth wall more often and demanded a more high status profession. She did go back to being a model occasionally in the comics like back when Cindy Crawford was at the peak of her popularity. My guess is that Brigitte Nielsen's She Hulk script was written somewhere in the early 90s when the lawyer persona of She Hulk was still an on and off endeavor depending on the time the stories in the comics where taking part.

    Very interesting indeed!
    Depending on budget and knowledge + respect of source material always are the factors that must be considered first. Then the level of tallent involved such as director and actors, that will make it happen. Putting this aside, the rest is all about; "Can we translate the content from the comic books to the silver screen?".
    Some Marvel characters that are awesome, but also VERY difficult to make a fully working movie out of. The best example I always think of is the Silver Surfer!
    He is very iconic in the Marvel universe and somewhat of an OP character with decent wisdom, cosmic powers and is mostly written to serve Galactus the World Eater....
    but how to make a decent movie all about him with-out using the Fantastic Four, Thor etc-etc is the big question (?). The most obvious way is an origin story of how he became the SIlver Surfer (yes to save his world...) but then what? Cruising around in the universe and finding new worlds for Galactus to consume will not be a very interesting story to work with alone, and we can't for obvious reasons related to the source material make him "rebell" against Galactus in the very same movie as that would be major rushed = not work with the audience or overall movie critics.
    We have seen a lot of portrays of famous Marvel characters, but then they got abandoned for various reasons with-out never finnishing there potential stories.
    Examples of that in my mind are "The Punisher", "Daredevil", "Wolverine", "Hulk", "Ghost Rider" and "Venom".
    The Punisher we have had like 4 different variations of with 4 different actors (Dolph Lundgren, Thomas Jame, Ray Stevenson & Jon Bernthal) and yet NON of them we saw go deeper into the Punisher lore and great potentials of taking on various enemies and villians. I liked both Jane & Stevenson's portrays as they felt we could build more with sequels, especally Stevenson where we skipped the murder of family story we all know about and jump direct into his War on Crime crusade to bring down all the nasty criminals that escape justice. We saw a great portray with FINALLY having his most known enemy in "Jigsaw" as big baddie + eliminating a big mafia family and his side-kick "Micro" with him.
    However, again it stopped after that. We never got to see any more movies where the Punisher would be up against the likes of;
    "Wilson Fusk the Kingpin" and his syndicate or "Barracuda" or "Bullseye" or "Bushwacker" or various Mafia clans.

      Hey thanks! Most of these are yet-to-be-released tunes from my project, Spirits of Silo. Currently, that’s only on instagram and TikTok.
      Two of the songs in this video (this red cloak, and scared to pretend) are from my old project, Spinoza, which is still on all streaming platforms. :)

    I read once that there was a rumor that Tobe Hooper (who did in fact read comics) was the one who tipped off Marvel what was about to be done to Spidey He didn't mind the story in the script, he just felt it shouldn't be associated with Spider-Man. IIRC he was responsible for a later horror movie with that story.

    Scantily clad Brigitte Nielsen circa 80s/90s? Yes please! I remember seeing the stills a comic convention at some point and I mean Nielsen's stature and physical presence was hard to fault, alhough for that time period I can't imagine why Cory Everson was not considered.

    • @glennszydlowski5987

      I would have loved to see Cory Everson staring as the She-Hulk. She had a muscular physique and was also an established actress. I agree that the outfit Brigette wore in the promos was a terrible choice and it would have been better to see the She-Hulk in an improvised bikini type outfit.

    Im sure you have been made aware that black Spidey suit is Not the symbiote suit. This is the black Secret Wars suit. Similar but the black suit came first. He sometimes brings it out of storage when he is pissed.

    • @MattsMediaReviews
      @MattsMediaReviews  2 місяці тому

      He didn’t get rid of the symbiote until issue #258 which was November 1984. He got the symbiote around spring of that year, which is when this TV movie was going to be released. So that means it would be emulating the symbiote at the time. The secret wars suit *is* the symbiote which came before he got a black cloth costume emulating the symbiote btw

    I will always find it funny that Stan the Man hated the Spider-Man live action series from the 70s, but praised the Japanese version when it took so many liberties with the source material. Personally, I would have loved to have seen a Hulk and Spider-Man team up in the 80s.

    • @evanlindsey1100

      The main reason Stan liked Supaidaman was the fact that the suit actor crouched a lot and walked around in a similar man. Stan felt that despite all of the differences, this portrayal was closer to the Spiderman in the comics.

    These movies intrest me, they stray so far from the source material with hulk being so small and Peter never even once fighting a super villain, only fighting mob members.
    And their costumes intrest me as well, Spider-Man’s specifically, and also the fact that marvel doesn’t care at all, like the only things they mention is tokosatsu Spider-Man but it seems to always be for “erm, how weird isn’t it” (rather than them genuinely liking it, atleast it feels like it) and the 60’s Spider-Man, but even then they never got the og voice actor to reprise his role even before his death :(

    NGL I actually think the unreleased Fantastic Four movie was good. So far it’s the most accurate comic to screen adaptation of the FF, and despite its budget, it gives us a Thing suit on the level of the 90’s TMNT. I also think that despite the differences, 80’s Thor is peak casting. Eric Allen Kramer not only looks identical to comic Thor (in looks, not in costume) but he also nails the loud voice and short Shakespearean speeches comic Thor is famous for. And I’m giving all this praise as a ZOOMER.

    • @MattsMediaReviews
      @MattsMediaReviews  2 місяці тому +2

      Lol I’m a zoomer too and I actually DO like the FF movie. The joke was just to point out that their second project with marvel still didn’t really pan out.

    Does anyone know if the Daredevil suit from The Trial of the Incredible Hulk inspired the prototype black suit that was retconned in later, and used prominently in the DD tv series? The prototype suit is essentially a flashier version of the Trial of Hulk suit.
